ounded in Las Terrenas in 2002, Tres Editores is a publishing house focused exclusively on promoting Las Terrenas and the Samaná Peninsula. To date, a total of 43,000 copies of our publications La Guía, Insamana and Las Terrenas City Map have been distributed for free each year. With the issue you are now holding in your hands that number reached 500,000 copies over the past 16 years. A chance meeting between Silvia Leperre, Veronique Banet and Armando Doménech back in 2002 led to the idea of publishing a guide to Las Terrenas. With great enthusiasm and not a lot of money they started working on what would become the first edition of Info Tourism Las Terrenas 2003. Following that first edition – 8,000 copies distributed in 5 languages - Info Tourism kept growing. Now renamed La Guía, the number of copies and the number of advertising pages, especially investment advertising, increased each year, making us think about a magazine focused more on business rather than tourists. And so, over the course of the following years, the publications Bonche, La Terrenas Mi Amol, United Colors of Samaná and El Callejón emerged until finally, in 2008, Insamana came out. Over time, our office changed location from Casa Linda to Plaza Kanesh and finally to Beach Garden Plaza; our organization also changed with Veronique Banet leaving in 2012, Gianmaria Pisino entering as partner in 2015, and Silvia Leperre leaving in 2018 to follow new paths in Europe after many years here. Currently Tres Editores publishes La Guía: yearly magazine. 140 pages, full color, 26,000 copies, 4 separate editions (Spanish, English, French and Italian); Insamana: 72 pages, top quality printing and paper. 7,000 copies, 3 separate editions (Spanish, English and French); Las Terrenas City Map: yearly publication, 10,000 copies. Las Terrenas, in the province of Samanรก, on the north coast of the Dominican Republic, is a small booming city internationally renowned for its spectacular golden sandy beaches, clear warm waters and large number of mainly European foreign residents, and a rapidly growing number of Canadian and American residents in recent years. 21

as Terrenas is a place where local inhabitants and “gringos” live happily side by side in a colorful mixture of cultures, speech, skin color and behavior. This mixture makes Las Terrenas a unique place compared to other tourist destinations in the country and puts it in the spotlight of domestic and international tourism in Dominican Republic. The idyllic beauty of its 15 km of fabulous unspoiled beaches circled by the green hills of the Samaná mountain range and undulating landscape of millions of coconut trees squeezed tightly together in front of the majestic ocean make this spectacular place. Blue and green melt into each other and are the beginning and end of everything. The contrast of colors and light are one of a kind and are an unforgettable memory for all visitors, an indelible image! The intense green of the vegetation, the turquoise blue of the sky and sea, the gold and white of the sand mix and match perfectly. This is how Las Terrenas looks in all its glory from the Atlantic Boulevard, a first glimpse that leaves you breathless. 22
La Punta de los Muertos (Deadman´s Point), so named because of the cemetery, is also the venue for the local fish market and several eateries. The Mahi-Mahi (dorado) is one of the most abundant species of fish in these waters. Despite the digital era of 21st Century some jobs are still done manually.
Although it lies on the Atlantic coast the entire area is protected by a coral reef, making it ideal for snorkeling and many other water sports. There is nothing like the beauty and variety of our coastline anywhere else on the island. A multitude of hidden coves, quiet bays and wave swept beaches follow one after the other to delight all sea lovers. The surrounding area of Las Terrenas hosts many beaches worthy of 5 stars (Lanza del Norte, Morón Beach, Las Canas) but you won´t find too many services there, or hammocks to rent, just the natural shade of the coconut trees, almond trees and wild seagrape bushes. 23
Travelling inland, you will be amazed by a very different landscape dotted with small villages, and vegetation including cocoa and coffee plants, majestic mangos, bread fruit and cashew trees, wild orchids… the list is never ending. The entire north coast is dotted with private villas, guesthouses, apartments and boutique hotels, all discretely blending into the exuberant natural green background. But Las Terrenas isn´t all sand and sea. There´s something for everyone. And when it comes to food, you cannot beat the choice of specialized restaurants and eateries offering culinary delicacies from around the world, ranging from the friendly beach bars offering a great variety of local dishes, to more the sophisticated restaurants with mouth-watering menus – each venue worth a visit. Las Terrenas really has it all: comfortable accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets, entertainment, sports, shops, services and a unique laid-back fun atmosphere day and night. Walking down bustling Duarte or Carmen streets, which intersect to form a figure of 8, you will find they are bursting with the essence and charm of Do24

Taking a motoconcho (moto taxi) for short trips or a guagua (local bus) to visit neighboring towns, tasting sancocho (typical soup) or dulce de leche (like fudge) or shaking it up on the dance floor to the rhythm of bachata, meringue or salsa, are all experiences you dare not miss as they are the key to enjoying the generosity and joy of Dominican life to the full. 25

ENDLESS BEACHES S
uch is the variety and quality of the beaches throughout the Samaná peninsula that everyone will find their dream beach. And all are freely accessible, no all-inclusive hotels here, just the shade of the coconut trees, almond trees or wild seagrape bushes. PLAYA COSÓN Stretching 6 kilometers, it´s perfect for walks and enjoying. It has quiet bays, river mouths, wind for kite surfers and waves for surfers, places kitted out with sun loungers as well as more solitary spots. Cosón Beach has everything you could wish for. There are not many places like it in the world! PLAYA EL VALLE Reminiscent of “Pirates of the Caribbean”, the bay has a few small restaurants on the beach which are an invitation to try some fresh fish caught by the local fishermen.

PLAYA FRONTÓN An imposing cliff is the backdrop to the cove that holds this discreet charming and unspoiled beach. Characterized by its beautiful waters it is perfect for people who love solitude. The only land access is along a dirt track. Otherwise, an exciting boat from Las Galeras will get you there in 20 minute. Stock up on water and food beforehand as there are no services on the beach. PLAYA BONITA This beach is itself a wonder of nature. It is surrounded by lush vegetation and coconut trees that plunge into its crystal clear waters. The blue and turquoise waters make you want to hop in and never want to leave. It is somewhat isolated, ideal for anyone looking for a day of relaxation and absolute quietness. Simply stunning! 29

LOS HAITISES NATIONAL PARK C
ontoured by the Bay of Samaná, Los Haitises National Park extends over 631 km2 and is one of the country´s most beautiful landscapes, thanks to its geological formation and its flora, fauna, underground rivers, caverns and islets. “Haitises” means highland or mountain range and this park is famous for its numerous conical hills or mogotes, which are low mountainous promontories (ranging between 30 and 40 meters in height) and are scattered throughout the coastal area. Like the rest of the park, these mogotes are formations which emerged over time. In addition to the numerous migratory species, the park is the safe haven for 110 out of the 230 bird 33
species in the country. These birds usually inhabit the numerous cays, the most famous of them all being Cayo de Los Pájaros or Bird Cay, where hundreds of birds, some with peculiar large red sacs on their chests, circle constantly. We still don´t know why they prefer this particular cay when they have more than 60 cays and islets to choose from! The park´s geomorphologic karst formation gives rise to an important system of caves, among other things. The Taino Indians, ancient settlers of the region, used them as warehouses or ritual sites. Featuring pictographs and petroglyphs of great historical and archaeological value La Reina, San Gabriel and La Linea are just some of the caves that can be visited. The average temperature is 25 ºC with high humidity and frequent rains in the two largest vital areas of rain forest and tropical forest. Come and enjoy this National Park, the only one of its kind in the Caribbean

EL LIMร N WATERFALL O
ne of the most outstanding natural beauties of Samanรก is El Limon Waterfall, a spectacular 40 meter cascade plummeting into a natural pool of cool, crystal clear waters. El Limรณn Waterfall is the focal point of 18 km2 of protected area of dense tropical rainforest located about 300 meters above sea level. The waterfall originates at the point where the waters of Arroyo Chico empty into the El Limรณn River. Normally excursions are on horseback, trekking through the damp tropical forest accompanied by a local guide, although the more daring and physically fit can make it on foot if the tracks are dry. The journey to the fall takes about an hour whether on foot or on horseback.

The landscape around El Limón is beautiful, with small wooden houses painted in bright colors that blend in with the lush surroundings. There is a minimum entry fee to the park. The money is used for the upkeep of the various trails and improving some segments.
There are four classic routes to the waterfall: El Café (with breathtaking views of the waterfall from the point where visitors leave their horses and continue on foot), Rancho Español, El Limón and Arroyo Surdido. Each route has stalls offering organized excursions, food and drinks for visitors. Once at the waterfall, the local youngsters won´t pass up the chance to show off their skills by climbing the steep, slippery rocks, before diving impressively into the pool below.

HUMPBACK WHALES
I
f you ever get the chance, don´t miss out on seeing the humpback whales in their
natural mating and breeding environment. These spectacular mammals weighing up to 40 tons can be seen in the Samaná bay´s warm waters from January to March. For the rest of the year, humpback whales live in the North Atlantic´s cold waters, but in winter months they undertake the arduous journey of more than 25,000 kilometers to reach tropical seas to mate and reproduce. While they are here they stop feeding and live off their fat reserves, dedicating all their time to reproductive activities or caring for their young.

Of the entire Caribbean region, the Bay of Samanรก is where you can see humpback whales the closest. Witness the most active Atlantic whale species as they put on a show. Like other large cetaceans, humpback whales were on the verge of extinction because of the whaling industry. By the mid-twentieth century, the population had dropped by 90% and it was not until 1967 that they were declared a protected species. Since then, the pods have recovered, although only partially. They are still under constant threat from fishing nets, collisions with ships and pollution. To learn more you can visit the Whale Museum in Santa Barbara de Samanรก, which shows details of the epic journey that hundreds of these cetaceans make every year from the chilly northern sanctuaries down to the Bay of Samanรก. An unforgettable, spectacular and often thrilling tour.

t goes without saying that thanks to the varied coastline the area around Las Terrenas is outstanding for all sorts of water sports: paddle boarding, surfing, kite surfing, swimming, windsurfing, snorkeling, etc., are all at your fingertips. The peninsula is protected by coral reefs waiting to be explored during a wonderful day´s snorkeling. Don´t miss out on the experience of scuba diving off Las Ballenas Cays, so named because of their shape. Even beginners can enjoy any one of these sports as the many schools in town cater to all levels, with courses for all ages and in every language! You can also practice your favorite sport: tennis, cycling, mountain biking, jogging, football, baseball, gym, Pilates, etc. Adrenaline lovers won´t want to miss the zip lining at El Valle Beach. An extraordinary adventure in an unbeatable setting, “gliding” over the San Juan Riv44
er and lush tropical vegetation, zipping from one hill to another is a unique experience that will stay in your mind forever. A wide variety of events are held throughout the year, for example, the huge Festivela annual water sports festival, or Las Terrenas Sailing Club´s popular National Regatta every May.
