The purpose of my project is to revitalize the town of Manchester for the future while anchoring it within its past through the revitalization of its main street and the design of a heritage center that engages the public sphere and creates a recognizable landmark signifying the heart of the city.
The first move was to integrate the master plan into the site and to entirely anchor the building into its surroundings. This is accomplished by extending the grid of pavers into the northern third of the site and extending the overhang north, encouraging people traveling up Main Street to turn right onto the proposed greenway system.
The main program is divided by the atrium, with exhibit space elevated above the outdoor courtyard to the north, and the auditorium mostly sunken below grade with a portion of the courtyard ground peeling up to let light and air in to the auditorium through sliding glass doors. Linking all floors is a glass and metal counterweight elevator in the atrium, paying homage to the mine shafts of old. This reinforces the massive verticality of the space and express the essence of the mine, symbolically linking people to things of value which are in this case history, art, education, and community.

At first, this place was empty. There was no reason to come here, no reason to stay; a place between places, undisturbed, uninhabited. Some desired this seclusion, some desired the unknown, and others found money in the mountains. Salt, timber, and coal drew people from around the county and around the country to work here and call Manchester home. Now these resources have dwindled, leaving behind a community in need of a focused identity.

1 plywood construction is cheap, easy to construct, and easy to repair/replace in the future. modular shelving units can be rearranged to accommodate future needs. the naked condition of the exposed shelving reflects the brutality of the existing building. plexiglas covers the top ofthe theplexi counter. the light table in the plywood underneath and attaching led’s is formed by cutting a hole

having 2 smaller refridgerators is more efficient than having one full size appliance, both in initial cost and opperating cost, as the second machine would only be turned on when the first has reached ccapacity.
