DESIGN/BUILD STUDIO In 2011 Joplin, Missouri suffered through an EF-5 tornado in late May. Over 150 people were killed and thousands were effected by the powerful tornado. After a few years of recovery and rebuilding, Drury University teamed up with the parks department of Joplin to install the final piece of Cunningham Park - the area of most destruction. Along with twelve other students, we designed five elements to be built and placed on site in hopes to offer citizens a place for relaxation and recovery. Today, hundreds of people visit the park each day and over five journals have been filled with inspirational quotes and stories of survival.

COMMUNITY STUDIO One of the key semesters at Drury includes a community studio where we work with a specific community to offer their leaders a visioning toolkit to use to improve economic, environmental, and social life. Our studio was paired up with Houston, Missouri - a small town northeast of Springfield at the junction of two major highway systems. Even so, the town is experiencing a major shift in age increasing the need for multigenerational housing systems. A major portion of my duty involved improving the housing conditions in town to encourage more young professionals to move in while providing the needed housing for the increasing older generation. These examples encourage increased social interaction and sense of community.

ISLAMIC SANCTUARY This semester of studio is considered “comprehensive meaning we will have completed a fully build-able sanctuary by the end of the semester. We were given the choice between three religions that were not our own and I chose Islamic because their thoughts of worship and traditions fascinated me the most. This was just a conceptual design stage that is still getting many revisions and improvements. Overall, though, it is a great start to understanding how the program functions. I included these renderings in my portfolio to show Photoshop skills and attention to detail.

PHYSICAL MODELING Even though this project is from freshman year, it remains one of my favorite models I have built. I used a variety of materials and experimentations throughout the project to get the desired effects they create. Use of real and paper materials also come together to create a subtle project that blends together well and shows the overall conceptual notion of the project. The project itself is meant to be a “Sacred Space, Sacred Place and be a park located in the Springfield Downtown area as a place people can congregate for various events or just come to relax and enjoy the day. The park includes installations that can change throughout the year.

BRANDING + WEB DESIGN Along with the Community Studio project was a branding exercise I was placed on in hopes to get the town excited for change and improvement. This was a logo that could be used by the town for various events and campaigns in the future including fundraising and public forums. The main logo for the town was a star because the town is located in Texas County. We wanted to take this logo and abstract it while making it fresh and understandable. We chose a red color because red is the school’s color and holds strong importance within the community. We also suggested improvements to their website to allow for cohesion throughout the entire project and make it easier for people to access the information they need.

WEBSITE REVAMP Over the summer I wanted to be productive while visiting my grandparents in California and decided to take a Web Design class. Our main project throughout the summer was to revamp an existing website for a company in the Santa Barbara area. Seeing as cupcakes are one of my main food groups, I chose Crush Cakes because their current website is inconsistent and confusing. This update for their website is simple and clean while still providing all the necessary information. The pages are laid out in an easily navigable manner and offer features like Google Maps, online ordering, PDF versions of menus, and picture galleries.

MODEL PORTFOLIO While taking the Web Design class, I made a few friends in California who happened to be models and needed an online presence. Seeing this as an excellent learning opportunity, I took on the challenge of designing them a website while trying out a new product, Muse. This allowed me to become familiar with both Dreamweaver and Muse platforms and gave me a basis for designing websites in the future. The client needed a portfolio that could be viewed rather quickly and could offer a mobile version for busy managers. The client supplied all of the pictures that needed to be included and organized in a way that can be easily updated when needed.
