PORT COQUITLAM’S FAVOURITES
PortCoquitlam is home to a national hero: Terry Fox. And, each September, thousands of residents across Canada remember his Marathon of Hope and his dream to beat cancer.
But the city is also well known for its events and amenities, too.
Besides the annual Terry Fox Hometown Run, PoCo also hosts Can ada Day festivities at Lions and Castle parks, ending with a fireworks show, as well as Rivers & Trails Day, the PoCo Grand Prix cycling race and May Days, which in 2023, will mark its 100th year.
Sponsored in part by the Tri-City News, May Days includes a may pole dance by the royal party, art shows, demonstrations and a parade down Shaughnessy Street that attracts thousands of attendees.
As for its recreational facilities, Port Coquitlam ranks as one of the best in the Lower Mainland, with the Hyde Creek Recreation Centre, the newly built Port Coquitlam Community Centre — complete with a new square dedicated to Terry Fox — and Gates Park, where, this year, it was announced the new Turf 2 would be home to the Port Coquitlam Saints field lacrosse team.
Turf 2 is also next to, what will ultimately be, an $11.4-million project investment to turn Gates Park into a “state-of-the-art” sports hub — primarily for BC Soccer as its new base of operations.

Where do you shop regularly in the Tri-Cities?
There is a few regular places you can find me. You can usually find me once a week at the European Bakery on Shaughnessy Street, the PoCo Farmers Market through the summer and, if I am looking for something for my little lady, Willow, you will find me at Bosley’s in PoCo.
What is your favourite Tri-City trail to hike, cycle or run on?
There are several hikes through the Minnekhada Regional Park. I would say the Addington Lookout and High Knoll would be my favourite and they are pet friendly.
Where in the Tri-Cities would you take out-of-town visitors?
A must see for all visitors would be Belcarra Regional Park and White Pine Beach, and stopping for a cone at Rocky Point Park.
Where do you eat with friends and family in the Tri-Cities?
When I am not dining at the Astoria, I grab a bite and some beverages at San Remo’s, Provincial Spirits or the Gillnetter Pub. What is your favourite annual event, festival or gala in the Tri-Cities?
I love the May Day parade. It is a lot of fun and entertaining, but hands down the PoCo Car Show is absolutely amazing!

MOODY’S FAVOURITES
TheCity of the Arts is home to many artists from around the world. From visual artists and musicians to dancers and performers, Port Moody is brimming with creative talent.
It’s also got shopping districts to suit every style: NewPort Village, Suter Brook and Moody Centre are busy places that residents and visitors patronize.
Shop Local Port Moody promotes local, independent businesses in the community on its website (shoplocalportmoody.ca). The volun teer-driven society, currently led by president Taryn Barker of The Little Butcher, boasts more than 40 members.
As for entertainment and recreation, Rocky Point Park, which looks over the Port Moody Inlet and toward the mountains, is the spot where most events and festivals take place such as RibFest, Golden Spike Days and Canada Day.
It’s also where you can grab a handmade treat at Rocky Point Ice Cream and rent a kayak or paddleboard at Rocky Point Kayak.
And, if you’re thirsty, you can cross Murray Street to enjoy a beverage along Brewers Row — a tourism destination for the city that includes Yellow Dog, Twin Sails, Parkside, Moody, Bakery and the newly opened Rewind, a 1980s spin-off venture by the owners at Parkside.

Where do you shop regularly in the Tri-Cities?
I love shopping in the Tri-Cities! Being an ambassador of Eagle Ridge Hospital Foundation, and a longtime local resident, supporting local business and giving back to our community is something that is very important to me. Coquitlam Centre is a definite classic. I also recommend the gift shop inside Eagle Ridge Hospital, run by the Eagle Ridge Hospital Auxiliary. I’m really excited for our reimagined Evening of Caring Gala in spring 2023. We will have an exciting list of auction items to bid on. Funds raised will be used to purchase state-of-the art medical imaging equipment for our hospital, so be sure to check out our website and social media channels.
What is your favourite Tri-City trail to hike, cycle or run on?
We are so blessed in the Tri-Cities, Anmore and Belcarra region to have access to some of the most scenic trails nature has to offer. Coquitlam Crunch is my all time favourite, but even taking walks with my family around the neighbourhood I live in, we are surrounded by beautiful nature and wildlife, including occasional visits from curious bears!
Where in the Tri-Cities would you take out-of-town visitors?
All of our staff and board of directors of Eagle Ridge Hospital Foundation are Tri-Cities champions. I never shy of ideas to take out-of-town guests to see our beautiful community. One must-see would be Lights at Lafarge during the holiday season or Belcarra Regional Park all year around.
Where do you eat with friends and family in the Tri-Cities?
There are so many delicious options for everyone from all backgrounds and cultures here, and I love that about this community. Some of my favourite places to eat are Pasta Polo, Patina Brewing Co. and Bar+Restaurant Nellos, which recently opened up this summer. In addition to the food being great, all of these fabulous places also support the Foundation, and give back in many ways to the community whenever they can!
What is your favourite annual event, festival or gala in the Tri-Cities?
My favourite annual events are the events Eagle Ridge Hospital Foundation puts on!
This year, we had an incredible day on the course at our annual Ryan and Lucas Johansen Charity Golf Classic, where we raised more than $260,000 toward Eagle Ridge Hospital’s greatest needs. I am also looking forward to our Evening of Caring Gala, which we are able to put on again. The gala will be held this coming spring, something exciting to look out for.

Where do you shop regularly in the Tri-Cities?
Of course my number one place where I shop is my own store Thrifty Foods in Port Moody!
What is your favourite Tri-City trail to hike, cycle or run on?
In the summer, I enjoy visiting Rocky Point Park with my family, walking and enjoying the sites around the park. I always have to stop in for fish and chips at Pajo’s and, of course, ice cream at Rocky Point Ice Cream (my children’s request, of course).
Where in the Tri-Cities would you take out-of-town visitors?
My favourite places to take friends and family from out of town is of course anywhere on the brewery district. I love craft beer and supporting local beer in Port Moody. Yellow Dog continues to be a favourite of mine!
Where do you eat with friends and family in the Tri-Cities?
I love to visit the Boathouse when I can. My wife and I enjoy their seafood. What is your favourite annual event, festival or gala in the Tri-Cities?
Thrifty Foods has been huge sponsors of some of the biggest events in the Tri-Cities over the years, but my favourite one happens to be RibFest! I love being able to support a great cause with the Rotary Club of Port Moody and, of course, get to sample ribs at the same time!

Withthe introduction of the Evergreen Extension to Coquitlam City Centre, Coquitlam has become a hotspot for growth in the Lower Mainland.
More people are moving to the city and finding out what it has to offer, with new businesses also popping up every month.
And there’s plenty to see and do: From the Ikea store and Coquitlam Centre mall to the Hard Rock Casino Vancouver and the Coquitlam Crunch, there is something for everyone on any day.
As COVID-19 restrictions ease, Coquitlam is also returning with full-scale events and festivals. These include its signature parties like Canada Day, Kaleidoscope, Lights at Lafarge, Festival du Bois and ScotFestBC.
However, Coquitlam also had some new celebrations such as:
• Caribbean Days Festival, which moved this year from North Vancouver to Town Centre Park
• BC Dumpling Festival, hosted by Gina Chong and her Asian Arts & Culture Society team to savour multicultural fare and bring awareness to anti-Asian hate in our communities

Where do you shop regularly in the Tri-Cities?
You can find me weekly at Assi Market in Coquitlam at Glen and Johnson. They have all the best Korean snacks, banchan which are Korean side dishes, a great selection of fresh fruits and vegetables, and the most delicious kimbap.
What is your favourite Tri-City trail to hike, cycle or run on?
There are so many really great outdoor spots in the Tri-Cities such as Deboville Slough, Rocky Point Park and Ridge Park up in Westwood Plateau. My favourite hands down would be the Coquitlam Crunch where I go everyday for my morning runs. There is no better place to get in a good heart pumping workout.
Where in the Tri-Cities would you take out-of-town visitors?
My go-to spots to take out of town visitors are Rocky Point Park, Rocky Point Ice Cream and Brewers Row and, of course, a nice drive to the most scenic spots in the Tri-Cities, which are White Pine Beach, Buntzen Lake and Belcarra Regional Park.
Where do you eat with friends and family in the Tri-Cities?
I have a thing for noodles! So my go-to places in the Tri-Cities would be Koroko Tokyo Mazesoba on North Road for their delicious Mentaiko Cream Mazeso- ba, Tangmaru on St. Johns for their seasonal handmade Naengmyeon which is a spicy and cold buckwheat noodle, Chada Thai at Pinetree Village for their savoury Pad Thai noodles, and I can’t forget to mention Pho99 also at Pinetree Village for their House Special number 15.
What is your favourite annual event, festival or gala in the Tri-Cities?
My favourite gala would be the Business Excellence Awards Gala held by the Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce. It’s a great way to meet with so many amazing local business owners and celebrate those who go above and beyond to contribute to the community. I am proud to say that we, Butter Studios, are the recipients of the Business of the Year (1–10 employees) Awarded twice... in 2013 and 2020. Of course, I can’t forget to mention the first ever BC Dumpling Festival held by the Asian Arts and Culture Society. We will be sure to continue this festival in Coquitlam for years to come as a way to celebrate multiculturalism and diversity in our community.

Where do you shop regularly in the Tri-Cities?
If the question is asking about foods, my answer is produce/bakery/dairy departments at the local Superstores. If for clothing, then it would be a Winners store for casual clothing, or men’s suit store called Moore’s.
What is your favourite Tri-City trail to hike, cycle or run on?
My favourite Tri-City trail would be anywhere along the Coquitlam and Pitt rivers for bike riding, or the Crunch if I want something with some intensity.
Where in the Tri-Cities would you take out-of-town visitors?
If I have out-of-town visitors looking for local entertainment in the Tri-Cities, I would consider a live music show at the casino or to an arena to take-in a sports game. Or maybe tour them around to all the Indigenous art installations that went up in the last number of years, and obviously to ones that are easily accessible, or maybe just to any number of the parks that are around. It really depends on what they might be looking for.
Where do you eat with friends and family in the Tri-Cities?
If I go for casual dining in the Tri-Cities, I may go to Brown’s or Coquitlam Grill, or maybe for a family birthday observation/celebration, I might go to Rio Brazilian Steakhouse or The Keg, or maybe Austin Fish House for a casual lunch.
What is your favourite annual event, festival or gala in the Tri-Cities?
I actually do not have a favourite annual event, festival or gala yet in the Tri-Cities. There have been new ones introduced this year and I had the privilege, pleasure and honour to go and help them kick-off their inaugurals in a traditional way. All the events to date are much fun for everyone.
