OnJune19,citycouncilunanimouslyOK’d thethreestreetnames —plusfourmore—for theredevelopmentthat, whenconstructedover sixphases,willsee5,500 homesforupto13,000 peoplein16towersplus afuturepublicrecreation centreandschool.

Thefirsthigh-rise, calledDebut,isexpected tobeupby2026.

WhileSekiAvenuewas alreadyinthecity’sStreet NamingPolicyforpre-approvedtitles,thesixothers neededcouncil’sconsent tobeusedatFraserMills, locatedatthesouthern

endofKingEdwardStreet atUnitedBoulevard.

Inareporttocouncil,AndrewMerrill, Coquitlam’sdirectorofdevelopmentservices,said thatcitystaffworkedwith theCoquitlamHeritage Society,aswellasthefamilieswhosenameswould bemadepermanenton streetsigns.

AndMayorRichard Stewartcongratulatedthe companyforleavinga lastinglegacythatnotonly honourspastmillworkers, butisinclusivewithmulticulturalrepresentations:

Inhisreport,Merrill wrotethatcitystaffare nowworkingwithmembersoftheKwikwetlem FirstNationforfuture Indigenousstreetnames fortheredevelopedsite.

Meanwhile,council gavefirstreadingtoBeedie Living’srezoningbidon June19andsentittoaJuly 10publichearingtotweak thestreetnetworkdesign fortheproperty.

Counciltoldcityplannerstheywouldlikeimprovementstothepublic realmelementsthatare beingproposed,suchas tothestylized“F”gateway signandstreetfurniture likebenchesandtrash

cans.

TheFraserMillssawmill operatedfrom1890to 2005.

In2008,BeedieLiving gotcouncilapprovalforits originalWaterfrontVillage CentreNeighbourhood Plananddevelopment agreements;eightyears later,thecompanyadded 1316UnitedBlvd.—expandingitsgroundsto 91.5acres.

LastOctober,thenew waterfrontplanswas green-litbycounciland thefollowingapplications arenowunderreview, Merrillwrote:

Thosewhofloutthe bylawcouldbefined,but Westsaidhe’snot“naive” tothinkthat’sasolution.

Underthecurrent bylaw,peoplewhoviolate thecity’sbylawcouldbe bannedfromtheareas, suchasaparkorpublicfacility,forupto30days.

isaddedasasecondarydisinfectantatthewatersource.Staff recordedlowamountsoffree chlorineresidualatthreeofthe 30samplingstations.

Intotal,thecityfielded58 complaintsaboutwaterquality lastyear,largelytodowithdiscolouredwater(19werebecause ofbadtasteorodour).

Meanwhile,FraserHealth— theregionalhealthauthority— continuestorequirethataflushingmessagebeincludedwithin thecity’sannualreportbecause oftraceamountsofleadinsome drinkingwatersystems.

Coquitlamdoesnotuselead servicelinesforwaterdistribution,MayorRichardStewart

pointedoutatthemeeting. Still,“FraserHealthmaintains thatitispossiblethatsomecomponentsusedinhomeplumbingsystemsupuntil2014may containtracesofleadand,since thereisnosafelevelofleadexposure,theflushingmessageis stillrequired,”wroteJaimeBoan, Coquitlam’sGMofengineering.

Inresponse,citystaffin2019 addedtwoinclusion-focused employeestotrainandhelp campleaders.

“Whilethisapproachhad somesuccessesindeveloping inclusionskillsamongcamp staff,therewasaremaininggap inbeingabletosupportthose withmorecomplexneedswho wouldbenefitfromdirecten-

gagement,”hewrote.

“Staffidentifiedanadditional 20childrenwhowouldhave benefittedfromsupport,but couldnotbeaccommodated withinthepilot’slimitedresourcing,”Englundwrote,addingeightrequestscouldnotbe metbecausethechild’sneeds exceededstaff’sabilities(help-

ingwiththewashroom,transferringfromawheelchair,using feedingtubesandrequiringenhancedbehaviouralsupports).

That’stheaimofseveralproposedchangestoPoCo’ssmokingbylawthatwouldincrease finesfrom$250to$500for smokinginparksbetweenJune 1andSeptember30.

Thebylaw—whichstillneeds council’sfinalapprovalbutwas consideredatitsTuesday(June 27)meeting—wouldalsomake itillegaltodropburningbutts onthegroundorflickcigarette buttsoutofamovingvehicle.

Inpractice,itwouldrequire smokerstosafelyputoutand disposeoftheircigarette(orstop vaping)whenenteringaparkor areaofthecitywheresmokingis prohibited.

PortCoquitlamFire& EmergencyServicesstaffand bylawenforcementpersonnel arealsoexpectedtostepup patrolsatvariousparksand trailsthatareatriskofawildfirethroughoutthesummer months.

Staffwillbelookingoutfor anyfires,burningandsmoking bylawinfractionsaswelledu-

catingparkandtrailusersabout fireprevention.

InMay2022,PortMoody issuedarequestforexpressions ofinterestforredeveloping KyleCentreanditssurroundingcampustoalsoinclude affordablehousingandaculturalplaza,aswellasapossible markethousingcomponentto helppayforitall.

PaulRockwood,thecity’s generalmanageroffinance andtechnology,saidthe requestsolicitedthreeapplicants.

Inthemeantime,thepreviouscouncildecidedthe buildingneededimmediateattentiontoaddressdeficiencies identifiedinanengineering assessmentcompletedin2020.

patternjust16monthsbeforethe nextscheduledelection.

Perhapsthemostsurprisingresultfromthetwobyelectionswas theout-of-nowhereriseoftheBC ConservativePartyintheLangford–JuandeFucariding.Itscandidate there,MikeHarris,receivedalmost20percentofthevote,more thandoublethesupportfortheBC Unitedcandidate.

Thisinaridingwherethe ConservativePartyhasnoteven fieldedacandidateinanelectionfor morethan20years.

ThisstrongConservativeshowing, combinedwiththetepidBCUnited support,mustbeofconcernforthe partythatistryingtorebuildthe

so-called“freeenterprisecoalition” thatwastheBCLiberalPartyand beforethattheSocialCreditParty formorethan60years(47ofthemin government).

ItseemsobvioustheBCUnited brandhasnotresonatedwiththe votersyet,whichisnottheleast bitsurprising.Rebrandingamajor brand—whetheritisapolitical partyoranymajorcompany—takes timeandBCUnitedhasbeeninexistenceasapoliticalbrandonlyfora fewmonths.

Thebyelectionsmarkedthefirst timethatBCUnitedappearedon aballot,givingvotersachoiceto voteforit.Just2,266votersoptedto dothatbetweenthetworidings,a

declineofabout4,500votersfrom whatitsprecursor,theBCLiberal Party,receivedinthe2020general election.

AnditisnotjusttheBCUnited Partythatshouldbeconcerned abouttheoutcomes.

TheBCGreenPartycouldnot motivatevoterseitherandsawits totalvotebetweenthetworidings declinebyabout5,400fromthe2020 election.

Demoskoffisalsoabusy husbandandfathertoafouryear-olddaughterwhenhe’snot organizingfundraisers,likethe upcomingMayors’Ball,forthe CoquitlamFirefightersCharity.

Butwhenthecallwentoutfor aclosefriendorfamilymember todonateaportionoftheirliver toacousinwhowasdyingof cancer,Demoskoffdidn’thesitate.

Thiswasacrisisthathecould handle,hethought,evenifit meantpossiblyriskysurgery,a five-dayhospitalvisitandweeks ofrecovery.

“Cost–benefitanalysis?Isay thecostsareminimalcompared tothebenefitthatcouldbefor him,”saidDemoskoff,speak-

ingofhisdonorrecipientand cousinKevin,alsoayoungdad.

Kevin,aformerCalgaryresidentwhonowlivesinPortland, Ore.,withhisfamilyduetohis job,hadbeendiagnosedwith

colorectalcancerthathadmetastasizedtohisliver. Fortunately,Kevin’sU.S.job withNikehadmedicalbenefits,whichtookcareofthe medicalbills,whileanongoing

GoFundMeishelpingtopayfor livingexpensesduringtheoperationandrecovery.

EvenDemoskoff’ssurgery andmedicalbillsarecovered.

Theproceduretookthe

twomentoStrongMemorial Hospital,inRochester,NY, where—afterweeksofZoom meetingswithdoctors,psychiatristsandsocialworkers,aswell asbloodworkandscans—the surgeryhappenedonMay24.

Withhiswife,Sandra,byhis side,Demoskoffwasanesthetizedthentakentoanoperating roomwhileateamofsurgeons carefullycutoutabout65per centofhisliver,therightlobe, whiletherestwaslefttore-grow, aprocessthatwilltakeafew months.

Onceremovedfrom Demoskoff’sopenchest,the surgeonsworkedontheliverin preparationfortransplantwhile Kevinwaitedinotheroperating roomwithanotherteamofsurgeonsforthehealthyliver.

Thewholeproceduretook about16hoursfromhospital arrivalthroughtopost–op,and longerforKevin.

TheMulticulturalConnectionsFestivalmanagesto accomplishitall,whileatthesametimespreadingthe messageofbuildingcommunityandpersonalconnections. Inbetween,McLeodand Bringelandhadtosoothethe stingofmissingtheirchanceto competeatthe2020worldsand embarkedonbusystudiesatthe UniversityofVictoriaandthe UniversityofBritishColumbia, respectively,recommittedto theirtrainingandsteppedup theirgameplayingforCanada’s topmen’sclub:theVancouver FuriousGeorge.

BrianwasborninDuncan,BCtoVictorand StellaDavis.Hewaspredeceasedbyhisfather VictorDavisin1979,hismotherStellaFullerton in2021atage100,andhisstep-father JamesFullertonin1998.Hewillbelovingly rememberedandgreatlymissedbyhissister JoyDavisandhismanyfriends,relativesand man’sbestfriend,Rocky.

Briangrewupontenacresinthecountryside northofDuncanBC.Heworkedforanumber ofcompaniesbeforemovingtoVancouver in1980.BriantookthePrintingProduction ProgramatVancouverCommunityCollege. Hethenworkedinvariousprintshopsbefore workingfortheTri-CityNewsandtheLangley Timesintheadvertisinglayoutdepartment. Brianvolunteeredwithseveralorganizations overtheyears,butmostrecentlyatWagner HillFarmsarecoverycentre.

Brian’spassionhasalwaysbeencars.Hehad aphotographicmemoryofallthecarspeople ownedandcouldidentifyacarbylookingata smallsectionorpartofit.Helovedcarshows andtheLangleyCruise-In.Hehadanumberof carlovingfriendsandespeciallyhisautobody repairfriendwhorebuiltanumberofvehicles forhim.

Brianwasalsoaresearcher,interestedin genealogy.Hefollowedhisfamilytreeon bothsidesofthefamily,andononesidehe traceditbackto1648ortengenerations. Withhisartisticdesignskillsherecordedand laidoutanamazingamountoffamilystories, photographsandhistory.Hesharedthese withhisrelatives,preservingandpassing onthefamilyheritagesoitwouldnotbe forgotten.

Brianwasalsoacrossbordershopper,and heboughthisgasbythegallon.Hepreferred countryroads,andthequietlessurbanareas

ofWashingtonstate.Helikedcharacterhomes orbuildingsfromanearlierera.Brianloved theocean.Hewouldhavelovedtolivein theUSAandforthelastfewyearsheowned ahomeinBirchBaywherehelovedtostay. Brianwasalwaysdesigninghisdreamhome orwantingtomoveaheritagehome,andthis washisdreamuntiltheend.
