Raleigh playwright premieres

STORY OF HEALING Evie Fordham for Triangle Today

Delsin Jacobs is determined to be healed in the play “POOLED” by playwright Moses T. Alexander Greene. But the path to wholeness is not as simple as he thinks. As he waits by the pool, which is a contemporary iteration of the biblical Pool of Bethesda which had miraculous waters, Delsin (played by Greene) learns the stories of the others who are there. Many of them are as desperate or more than he. See the premiere of “POOLED,” Feb. 16 through 18 at the Kennedy Theatre in the Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Raleigh. It’s directed by Deb Royals-Mizerk and presented in partnership with Theatre Raleigh. The theme of the play is one that is close to Greene’s heart. “Do we believe that people deserve second chances?” he

asked. “The Bible, and this story in particular, demonstrates that there are no perfect people, but we all have something in us waiting for an answer — a job, a situation to be better or a change, so I think it is universal.” Greene is a man of many talents. He became the director of North Carolina State University’s African American Cultural Center in 2017. He’s worked in television, public affairs and education, including at historically black college St. Augustine’s University in Raleigh. He’s also on the City of Raleigh Arts Commission, and he’s all for bringing as much talent and diversity to Triangle theater as possible. “POOLED” was inspired by his favorite story in the Bible, John 5:1-15, in which Jesus heals a lame man who had waited nearly 40 years to walk and thought the Pool of Bethesda was his last hope. The story is one Greene remembers from his days growing up in New York. “I’ve been in the church, and a praise and worship leader, for years,” he said. “This really brings together both sides of me — my love for people, black culture and the arts.” Read the full story at triangletoday.com.

PATRICK DOUGHERTY: STEP RIGHT UP Ackland Art Museum

Franklin St. | Chapel Hill, NC 27599, through Aug. 31 Last fall the Ackland Art Museum commissioned its first major site-specific, outdoor art installation in nearly 20 years: a “stickwork” by Chapel Hill-based artist Patrick Dougherty. The large-scale work is made entirely of tree saplings and constructed in front of the Ackland Art Museum at UNC-Chapel Hill campus. The tree saplings, primarily maple and gum, used to make the piece were responsibly harvested from Duke Forest and Triangle Land Conservancy, organizations with which Patrick Dougherty has long relationships. THE MANY FACES OF PINOT NOIR

There’s a reason it’s called the “Heartbreak Grape.” It’s difficult to grow, difficult to keep stable in the vineyard, difficult to vinify and not always dependable for aging. The wines often are expensive and can be adversely affected by vintage, making many of them difficult to sell, in spite of booming popularity. Here are some fun facts about Pinot Noir, its incredible ability to TRIANGLE TODAY’S reinvent itself and how our understanding of the wine has evolved over the past couple of decades! MONTH

Pinot Noir’s name means “black pinecone” alluding TRIANGLE TODAY’S to the shape of the grape bunches. It is a delicate, thin-skinned varietal, noted for far lower levels of color and mouth-drying tannins than Cabernet Sauvignon. Pinot Noir wines are typically pale in color & light inMONTH body, with delicate, silky tannins, relatively high acidity, and very complex aromas.

The finest Pinot Noirs can age gracefully for a decade or more, particularly those produced in cool climates. France’s Burgundy, Oregon’s Willamette Valley, Chile’s Casablanca Valley, New Zealand’s Central Otago, Australia’s Tazmania and numerous cool-climate regions of California, including Carneros, Russian River, Anderson Valley and parts of Santa Barbara are among the most highly regarded regions in the world for Pinot Noir. Sara Guterbock, CS, ISS, CWE, DipWSET, is education director for Mutual Distributing Company of North Carolina. Read more from her about Pinot Noir at triangletoday.com, EAT + DRINK, I HEART WINE.
