FOR THE LOVE OF ART
ART AUCTION + GALA! Evie Fordham for Triangle Today
Martha and Adam Derbyshire are helping Raleigh grow through supporting art
The gala is Saturday, Feb. 10, from 6 to 11 p.m. at downtown Raleigh’s Marriott City Center. Tickets start at $100 and can be purchased at vaeraleigh.org. Attendees will have the opportunity to admire and purchase art by local artists, including the gala’s featured artist William Paul Thomas.
For art collectors Martha and Adam Derbyshire, great art is local art. That’s why they are excited to be honorary co-chairs of VAE Raleigh’s annual fundraising gala, which is the couple’s first time being involved with VAE’s event.
VAE board members Erica Porter and Debbie Robbins are organizing the event, and it’s through their friendship with Robbins that the Derbyshires came to support VAE in the first place.
“We’re just excited to learn about the outlook of VAE and see what the artists that are participating are able to contribute,” Martha Derbyshire said. “We thought it would be a great alignment in terms of our interest in helping Raleigh grow and thrive.”
“Debbie Robbins has told them a lot about VAE over the years,” VAE Executive Director Brandon Cordrey said. “The thing that VAE is moving toward is that art is best when it is done for a greater good. The Derbyshires appreciate that. … They will speak about why the arts are important [at the gala].”

Raleigh’s new public art director ready to use art to inspire, create community Mike Williams for Triangle Today
Duke University – Nasher Museum of Art 2001 Campus Dr. | Durham Through- May 13, 2018 The Nasher Museum presents an exhibition of vibrant color photographs that capture a variety of basketball hoops around the world. The artist, Bill Bamberger, is a Durham resident and instructor at Duke’s Center for Documentary Studies and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. From Maine to Florida and Rwanda to Mexico, the hoops indicate places both where basketball is played and where communities and relationships are built. They are objects that often shape and reflect these communities. As a part of many diverse landscapes, the hoops become integral elements of each location’s unique narrative. Duke undergraduate students curated the exhibition through a Curatorial Practicum class taught at the Nasher Museum by assistant curator Molly Boarati.

Last fall, a 40-foot crochet mural of Nina Simone was hung on the outside the Raleigh Convention Center, a project that continues to draw plenty of attention — and Instagram posts. Kelly McChesney was part of the effort to make that piece of public art happen and likely contributed to her hiring as Raleigh’s new public art director.
The city announced her hire recently as she replaces Kim Curry-Evans, who moved to Scottsdale, Ariz., last year to take on the same role. “Kim set us up to really explode, so this is exciting,” McChesney said. McChesney may be in a new role with the city, but she’s certainly not a new face in the Triangle’s art scene. She moved to Raleigh from Georgia in 2006 and opened Flanders Gallery, eventually relocating it to the Warehouse District before shutting it down last year and becoming the executive director of Lump Gallery. As for the Nina Simone mural, she was part of the team that brought artist Olek and her Love Across the USA initiative to Raleigh for community-wide crochet sessions to complete the mural.

PROSPECT.4: THE LOTUS IN THE SPITE OF THE SWAMP
This exhibition features photographs by Barbara Morgan (American, 1900–92) from the NCMA’s permanent collection. Although Morgan, one of the founders of the photography magazine Aperture, is best known for her studies of modern dance, she also created photomontages and light drawings.
In honor of Trevor Schoonmaker, chief curator and Patsy R. and Raymond D. Nasher curator of contemporary art at the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University and artistic director of Prospect.4, the Nasher Museum joins Prospect New Orleans for the fourth edition of the acclaimed international contemporary art triennial Prospect.4 The Lotus in Spite of the Swamp.

SABINE GRUFFAT: A KISS OF THE EARTH North Carolina Museum of Art | 2110 Blue Ridge Rd. | Raleigh
A Kiss of the Earth is an interactive computer-animated video and sound installation inspired by Sergei Diaghilev’s revolutionary 1913 Ballets Russes production of The Rite of Spring, scored by Igor Stravinsky. It is the story of a pagan tribe calling on its deities to restore the earth, a drama that ends with a sacrificial maiden’s dancing herself to death.
