Drew Jackson for TriangleToday

Like the Triangle dining scene at large, Triangle Restaurant Week has blown up over the past decade. What began with a couple dozen restaurants 11 years ago, returns through Friday nearly 100 participants strong.

Triangle Restaurant Week, which is twice a year, is an invitaTave rna A tion to explore. The week-long collecgora tion of lunch and dinner deals aims to entice area diners to seek out restaurants they haven’t tried before — to get a taste for a new spot that might not be obvious for a typical night out. The format remains the same. Most restaurants are offering three-course dinner menus for $20 to $35. Some offer three-course lunches for $15 while others have $10 lunch specials. See page 3 for a sample of participating restaurants. French bistro Royale, which serves items like Duck a L’orange, shown above, is taking part in Triangle Restaurant Week for the first time. The mission: Help you get your hands on some empanadas. Given the portable nature of these Latin American street food-inspired hand pies, it comes as no surprise that they’re a popular food truck offering. Here are some of the best places to get empanadas.

TIM O’BRIEN

From Hot Rize to a stellar solo career, Tim O’Brien has remained among the most creative and productive artists on the bluegrass/Americana scene. O’Brien was named IBMA’s top male vocalist in 2005, the same year he won song of the year for “Look Down that Lonesome Road.” He’s touring with the Banjo Tramps, Jan Fabricius, J.D. Hutchinson and Old Man Luedecke. Jan. 27, 7:30 p.m. Fletcher Opera Theater, 2 E. South St., Raleigh. Tickets start at $34. 800-7453000 or pinecone.org.

NORTH CAROLINA OPERA – “RIGOLETTO”

Verdi’s dramatic work about a jester, his daughter and a lecherous duke contains some of opera’s most recognizable tunes, including “La donna mobile.” N.C. Opera’s fully staged production is led by noted conductor Joseph Rescigno and stars Malcolm Mackenzie and Jacqueline Echols. 7:30 p.m. Jan. 26 and 2 p.m. Jan. 28. Memorial Auditorium, 2 E. South St., Raleigh. $26-$98. 919-792-3853 or ncopera.org.

MALLARME CHAMBER PLAYERS

Works that were commissioned from composers are the basis of this concert, beginning with a Mozart piano quartet and a Boccherini violin sonata and culminating in a new work for harpsichord and strings by Mark Janello. 3 p.m. Feb. 4. Baldwin Auditorium, 1336 Campus Drive, Durham. $25 (children and students $5). 919-560-2788 or mallarmemusic.org.

1. Calavera Get your hands on this: A dozen variations on the empanada theme, from traditional chicken tinga to Piggly Wiggly (slow-smoked Carolina-style pulled pork). Plenty of vegetarian choices, too, including tequilamarinated poblanos with Duranguense melting cheese. Empanadas are reasonably priced at $4 a pop, but the excellent tequila selection can drive up the tab in a hurry. 919-617-1661 calaveraempanadas.com 2. Empanada Factory Get your hands on this: The motherlode of empanada selections — over 40 to choose from, from Camaron Diablo (jerk shrimp with pineapples and jalapenos) to Philly Cheesesteak. For breakfast, how about El Paisa (fried pork belly, egg and Colombian sausage)? Dessert? Romeo & Juliet (guava and cream cheese) is a match made in heaven. 984-235-4239 theempanadafactorywf.com 3. Luna Rotisserie & Empanadas Get your hands on this: Blackened chicken with Yukon gold potatoes and roasted peppers; pork carnitas with caramelized onions, hominy and collards; and a vegetarian medley of quinoa, black beans, corn and pepper jack — a few of the ways Luna wraps its motto (South American / American South) in a baked pastry crust. 984-439-8702 lunarotisserie.com

4. Spanglish (Food truck) Get your hands on this: Abuela’s chicken, filled with a homespun stew of chicken, carrots and potatoes, if you’re in a mood for comfort food. If you’re feeling feisty, on the other hand, go with the Pork-U-Pineapple — which, true to the truck’s “Puerto Rican food with Southern charm” motto, features Eastern N.C.-style barbecue. eatspanglish.com or Twitter (@eatspanglish) for location 5. Vinos Finos Get your hands on this: House-made Argentinean-style empanadas (beef, corn and cheese, duck confit and sweet potato) are a deal at three for $10 and the excellent mostly South American selection of wines is so reasonably priced, you might even splurge on a glass or two. 919-747-9233 vinosfinosypicadas.com
