Encores are a part of Cheetie Kumar’s life as a member of Raleigh band Birds of Avalon. In the case of the upcoming multi-course meal at her Garland restaurant, they’re a part of her chef life, too. In September, Kumar cooked in one of the country’s most famous kitchens, the James Beard House in New York. Her one-night only menu helped tell the story of her global journey, around the feelings of home and memory. Kumar was born in Chandigrah, India, grew up in the Bronx and has been in Raleigh for three decades. Kumar, a two-time James Beard Award semifinalist, is bringing that special menu back to Raleigh for an encore dinner tomorrow, Monday, Nov. 12. Seats are $150 and include cocktails.

Like the nightly offerings at Garland, the menu moves through the flavors of Northern India using the products of North Carolina. Kumar said she was offered a chance to cook at the Beard House in March. She asked for a date late in the summer, when the state’s bounty peaks.

“It’s such a cool time here, I wanted to take advantage of everything still at its best, tomatoes and okra still around,” Kumar said in an interview. “I wanted to showcase the South through my perspective, using these amazing things we have in this state, blending what happens in North Carolina with the flavors of Northern India.”

Even so, if you’ve never actually seen O’Keeffe’s paintings up-close and in-person, “The Beyond: Georgia O’Keeffe and Contemporary Art” is a revelation. The show, which opened Oct. 13, brings the three-dimensional aspects of O’Keeffe’s imagery to life. By pairing her work with pieces by a wide range of younger artists for the purposes of comparing and contrasting, “The Beyond” gives a sense of O’Keeffe’s significance and place in history. “Decades beyond her life, Georgia O’Keeffe is still having impact and influence on art,” said Linda Dougherty, chief curator at the NC Museum of Art. “Seeing her work side by side with contemporary artists makes you look at her work differently, too, with a new perspective.” O’Keeffe lived a long and amazingly productive life, dying in 1986 at age 98. Along with desert landscapes, her best-known images remain closecropped paintings of flowers enlarged to the edge of the frame.

Much has been made of the sexuality evoked by O’Keeffe’s flower paintings. But she meant their scale to be attention-getting. “She began painting the flowers in 1924, when New York City was her environment,” said Lauren Applebaum, GSK curatorial fellow at the NC Museum of Art. “Blowing them up and radically cropping them was in direct response to the skyscrapers there, a way to get you to stop and look. Downtown Durham Beyu Caffe ending jazz concerts Dawn Baumgartner Vaughan for Triangle Today Beyu Caffe, a popular downtown Durham coffee shop, restaurant and jazz spot, will drop the jazz later this year — and all concerts. In a recent announcement, Beyu Caffe owner Dorian Bolden said he wrestled with the decision to discontinue live music. He recently opened a new coffee ashop, Beyu Blue, on the Duke University campus. “The heavy demand of running a growing coffee shop, restaurant, bar, and live music venue under the same roof was simply taking a toll on me and my family,” Bolden said. Beyu Caffe opened about a decade ago at Five Points in downtown Durham. It is one of a small number of African American-owned businesses downtown. A few years ago it moved to a bigger location a few doors down on Main Street, still at Five Points. It is a popular place to eat, meet up and get coffee during the day, and it draws crowds for its musical performances at night. Shana Smith of Beyu Caffe said the shop is returning to its roots, which has “always been at the heart and soul of the business.” Beyu is pronounced “be you” because Bolden wanted the

coffee shop to be a place people can be themselves. “Recently, I finally gave myself permission to ask myself, ‘What am I most passionate about? What do I enjoy the most?’ After the opening of Beyu Blue at Duke University, where I found myself back on the espresso machine making coffee, I was taken back to the cold day in December when I first opened Beyu Caffe. By coming full circle, I suddenly had the clarity of what I needed to focus on,” Bolden wrote.

Bolden said he created Beyu Caffe in Durham, after a career on Wall Street, to be “the ultimate community gathering space.” There’s still time to see a show or two at Beyu downtown. Beyu’s last live music performance will be on Dec. 31 for its “What the Funk” New Year’s Eve celebration. The Tre King band will perform. Beyu Caffe is also planning a farewell celebration for artists and guests. Then in January, Beyu Caffe will focus on coffee, daytime food, occasional community-focused events like talks and readings, and private events, Smith said.
