Barring a weather calamity that may or may not happen, the NC State Fair kicks off Thursday. And while nobody is pulling for Hurricane Michael to come this way, a

little drizzle might not be such a bad thing.

“There are many, many things to do at the NC State Fair even if it does rain,” said fair manager Kent Yelver-

ton. “So bring your umbrella. The good part about rain is it’s a lot less crowded when it happens.”

Wolfpack-themeded corn maze open to the public. Julia Wall For N.C. State University fans, this year’s Granville Haunt Farm corn maze isn’t spooky at all. It’s a museum-worthy work of art; a plush Wolfpack dreamland.

The maze is the handiwork of Grey Blackwell, a 1992 graduate of NC State’s College of Design. It features an intricately designed, stocking-shaped labyrinth starting with NC State’s block “S” logo, moving down into the iconic Tuffy head (with “NC State” carved into his cap) and then “WOLFPACK” spelled out at the bottom.

Blackwell, who worked as a graphic designer at The News & Observer for 11 years until November 2008, has owned and operated the Granville Haunt Farm near Oxford since 2015.

For all four seasons of his Haunt Farm corn mazes, Blackwell has worked with MazePlay, a company in Idaho that designs and constructs corn mazes across the country. For the past two years, his maze has been the Granville Haunt Farm logo (the first year it was a full moon and witch on a broom). But this year he wanted something special. That’s when he thought of NC State.

“Wouldn’t it be cool if NC State would allow us to do this?” Blackwell thought.

He reached out to his representative at the Wolfpack Club, who put him in touch with the school’s licensing people. This was also a new one for NC State, so they reached out to other schools who had done this before. They found a range of licensing fees and negotiated a fee with Granville Haunt Farm that Blackwell describes as “reasonable.”

Next, Blackwell did a mockup of the Wolfpack design and emailed it to MazePlay, and they did some tweaking.

“They refined it with all the curly-cues and made it more difficult,” Blackwell said. (To get through the maze, if you take the time to find all six checkpoints, Blackwell estimates it’ll take you about 45 minutes to complete.)

Songs drift from classical to pop to country and even some hip-hop as violinist Tyler Butler-Figueroa entertains the lunch crowd. The 11-year-old musician is tracked out of his year-round school, Walnut Creek Elementary in Raleigh, and taking advantage of the fall weather to raise money for a chance to audition on “America’s Got Talent” in Charlotte in December.

“I like playing the violin — it inspires me to play music for other children with the same story as me,” Tyler says, as he takes a short break during his 90-minute set. “I’m proud to be here street performing and I want to show other kids they can do what their heart tells them what to do.”
