“We Rise, We Resist, We Raise Our Voices.”

After the 2016 election, author and book publisher Wade Hudson heard all kinds of opinions. But when he heard that the election of President Donald Trump frightened

his Raleigh niece’s 7-year-old daughter, he took notice. And he decided he needed to do something to change the narrative. “(She) had heard all the nasty, vile and

Tips to declutter your home before downsizing [partner] Triangle Today The thought of downsizing your home can be a seemingly daunting task, keeping you from making a move that will ultimately improve your lifestyle. This is especially true if you have lived in the same residence for years or even decades and your home as accumulated quite a bit of stuff that you will have to go through before you move. At the same time, decluttering is essential to being able to fit your belongings comfortably into a smaller home when you do decide it’s time to downsize. Decluttering probably means parting with items you’ve kept for many years. Not only can it be physically exhausting to go through all the accumulated stuff, but it can also be a mental, and possibly emotional, challenge to decide what is worth keeping and what you won’t miss if you were to get rid of it. The following are seven great tips to help you declutter your home for a downsize while determining what the most important items are to keep and which ones you won’t miss if you toss them. Downsize the big stuff first If you are moving from a five-bedroom to a two-bedroom home, for example, you simply won’t need so many bedrooms sets moving ahead. If you are moving from a house with a living, dining and family room and now will only have a family room and a dining area, you won’t need to take ALL the furniture. Furniture is the big, expensive stuff to move. Getting rid of what you won’t need before you move will save you a lot of moving expenses that otherwise would add up. This helps you avoid spending money you don’t need to spend only to find later you don’t have the space to use t. Go through your boxes Going through each box in your home that is packed with stuff will help you determine what you need to keep and what you can get rid of. If you are not using it, get rid of it! This will mean fewer boxes to move and less clutter in your new (smaller) home. Get rid of duplicates If you have duplicates of any item, decide which one is moving and take that one with you. Get rid of the others! For example, if you have three old vacuum cleaners that all still work, pick one to take

and donate the others. No one needs three vacuum cleaners in one house! Same goes for old cookware like pots and pans or sets of furniture. If you have duplicates, keep one and get rid of the rest! Decluttering in this manner will help you avoid cluttering your new smaller home due to having “just in case” or backup items! Follow the “one-year” rule The “one-year” rule is simple. If you have clothes or shoes (or any accessory or item) you haven’t worn in a year, then sell or donate it. If you haven’t worn it in a year, you’ll not likely to ever miss it! This can help cut down on a lot of excessive clutter and help you get rid of clothes that you don’t use. Moreover, you will not have to worry about having cramped closets in your new home if you have less to store in them! Get rid of old collections unless you still collect Old collections of things that you have gathered over the years are sure to take up space and collect a lot of dust. For example, getting rid of the old teacups you collected 20 years ago can give you a whole lot of room for a new collection you may start in the future. The only exception is if you are still collecting to this day and still actively use the items in the collection, those are the ones that you can choose to keep. Only keeping those active and loved collections will help you make room for things you currently use, like your favorite collections. Ask: “Who else might be able to use this?” If you have items that you love but will not have a use for when you move, ask yourself “Who else might need this?” Questions like this are great to think of when deciding how many of the 15 pairs of barely used tennis shoes you have that you will be able to take with you. If you have other items that you know have some use but you don’t need, consider donating items to a charity you like that can give these items to those who need them more. Consider how much these people will appreciate getting nice things that have a lot more use left in them even if you don’t need them anymore. It can be easier to part with items if you donate them to someone who you know appreciates and will care for them in the future.

CELEBRATE NATIONAL FAMILY LITERACY DAY NOV. 1 Kids Town for Triangle Today When I was a child I was crazy about Laura Ingalls Wilder. I read her novels and even dressed up as her one year for Halloween. My sister’s passion was Nancy Drew. And my mother always had a book in her hand. Her “reward” for completing some household chore was to sit down and read a chapter before tackling the next job. For our family, reading has always been a treat. WHAT IS FAMILY LITERACY DAY? In 1994, after a revealed that about one-fifth US adults had basic “level one” literacy skills (out of four levels), the Federal Government established November 1st as National Family Literacy Day. This celebration of reading and writing is organized by The National Center for Families Learning, whose mission is to promote and foster education for the whole family as a way to eliminate poverty.

EIGHT WAYS TO CELEBRATE The following are some suggested ways to celebrate this day, create great memories and strengthen family ties: • Set aside a designated time to read. • Have books available in every room of the house. Have books for all the different reading levels and interests in your home (i.e. picture books for little ones; graphic novels for your reluctant reader.) • Visit the library. • Read the book version of your child’s favorite movie. • Organize a children’s book club. • Share family pictures and stories on your social media using the hashtag #FamilyLiteracyMonth • Sign up to volunteer in your community’s local literacy program. • When you are out running errands, read public signs or, for the very young child, have them identify objects that begin with a certain letter of the alphabet.
