North Carolina Museum of Art names new director

GUGGENHEIM CURATOR VALERIE HILLINGS Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, a contemporary-art museum that’s being established in the United Arab Emirates.

David Menconi for Triangle Today

The North Carolina Museum of Art has named a new director, and she’ll be the first woman to lead the state’s art museum since it was established. The museum announced Monday that Duke University alumnus Valerie Hillings will replace longtime director Larry Wheeler, 75, who announced his retirement in November. He has helmed the museum since 1994. Hillings, 47, lives in New York, where she has worked for the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Foundation since 2004. She serves as the curator and associate director of curatorial affairs for the future

“Having a woman director was probably overdue,” Wheeler said. “But regardless of gender, qualifications drive the ship and she has excellent credentials. We think she’s very worthy.” Hillings has curated more than 15 exhibitions on four continents and been widely published. She has also served on art-prize juries and was a fellow at the Central for Curatorial Leadership in New York in 2016, according to the NC Museum of Art. In an interview, Hillings said she is excited about the challenge.

North Carolina Museum of Art’s new director is Valerie Hillings, a Guggenheim curator and Duke University alumnus, succeeding the retiring Larry Wheelerr, Isaac James

“Between what Larry has already done here and what I’ve done in my career, I think the museum has the tools to connect with important people in the art world,” Hillings

said. “I’ll have to build my own ties with the community, obviously. Read more at triangletoday.com.

DIRECTOR’S LEGACY: LARRY WHEELER AT THE NCMA, 1994-2018 Through, November 4, 10am North Carolina Museum of Art 2110 Blue Ridge Road, Raleigh NC

When Lawrence J. Wheeler took the helm of the North Carolina Museum of Art, he recognized that the NCMA could offer the people of North Carolina more, in his words, than “mute art” on the wall. Wheeler accomplished an ambitious program that culminated in the milestones represented in the exhibition. Few are familiar with just how far he expanded the contemporary photography collection. The show features a selection of photographs Wheeler donated to the NCMA. He cultivated a place where music, dance, theater, and film are nurtured by the magnificence of the permanent collection he significantly enlarged.

Steven Curtis Chapman will bring his solo tour Oct. 4 at the Carolina Theatre in Durham. Connor Dwyer For the first time in more than two years, a straight-up comedy is No. 1 at the box office. Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish’s “Night School” debuted with $28 million in ticket sales, according to estimates Sunday.

The race for the weekend top spot was, in the end, a laugher. Warner Bros.’ animated release “Smallfoot,” which cost about $80 million to make, trailed in second with $23 million.

Not since Melissa McCarthy’s “The Boss” topped the box office in April 2016 has a comedy that didn’t mix other genre elements been No. 1. The romantic comedy “Crazy Rich Asians” was a huge success, leading the box office for four straight weeks, and Tyler Perry’s two horror-comedies — “Boo! A Madea Halloween” and its sequel — both opened at the top.

But big-screen comedy has been in a tailspin for years. It took two of comedy’s biggest names teaming up to push Universal’s “Night School” to the year’s best comedy opening. “We’ve been very consistent in this genre,” said Jim Orr, distribution chief for Universal. “When you get in business with people like Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish who are just on fire, and then really extraordinary filmmakers like (producer) Will Packer, that’s how you

get good results.” More than most studios, Universal has stuck by comedy. This year, it also released the prom-night farce “Blockers” ($60.1 million worldwide on a $21 million budget) and the comic musical “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” ($390.1 million worldwide on a $75 million budget). It’s the second straight No. 1 for Universal, which last week led ticket sales with the Amblin Entertainment-produced fantasy “The House With a Clock in Its Walls.” It earned $12.5 million in its second weekend. “We have a very diverse approach to our slate,” Orr said. “We’re not just superhero movies or anything else like that. When you see these kinds of results, you know that that’s the right thing to do, that it pays off.” Frights not laughs have become the hotter attraction at the movies, but for one weekend at least, horror and comedy switched roles. Lionsgate’s Halloween-themed “Hell Fest” debuted meekly with $5.1 million.

From the First Friday Art Walk in downtown Raleigh on September 7. Erin Duncan Since 1997, The News & Observer has recognized North Carolinians who have made lasting and significant contributions to the Tar Heel state in the last year and beyond. Honorees have come from all over North Carolina and from different sectors of the community including the arts, business, philanthropy, education and science. Past winners include John Hope Franklin (1998), Kay Yow (2002) and Betsy Bennett (2011), who were recognized for how they inspired and made a difference in the lives of their fellow citizens. The News & Observer has traditionally chosen the Tar Heel of the Year based on

internal submissions and discussions within the publishing company. Starting this year, in addition to taking staff nominations, we want to open up the nomination process to you, the community we serve. We understand the importance of your input and would like you to share with us the heroes you interact with every day. Tell us who they are and how their impact has been felt across the state.
