OLD CROW MEDICINE SHOW

There’s more – much more – to Old Crow Medicine Show than its millennial anthem, “Wagon Wheel.” The Grand Ole Opry favorites have won two Grammy Awards, and their reimagined string band music gained the attention of early supporter Doc Watson and latter day fan Bob Dylan, whom the band covered in its 2017 CD, “50 Years of Blonde on Blonde.” Expect to hear the million-selling “Wagon Wheel” and others when the band performs at Koka Booth Amphitheatre Sept. 20. Dawes will also perform. The details: Sept. 20, 7 p.m. Koka Booth Amphitheatre at Regency Park,

Son of Wolfpack basketball star brings flavors of his Turkish home to Raleigh

One of the wonderful things about living in the Triangle is the multitude of parks and recreational areas for kids. Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill, all have a great selection of parks to choose from. Here are a few of the parks in our area that provide awesome ways to get kids moving.

Drew Jackson for Triangle Today

LAUREL HILL PARK, RALEIGH

Now he can have that pudding everyday, sometimes for breakfast. Last month he opened the Sultan Kebab House on Western Boulevard in the former Gourmet Factory space.

The huge playground is just the beginning at Laurel Hill Park. This preserve features a community center, 2 basketball courts, 2 baseball fields, and a multipurpose field. There’s also a beautiful pond with a nature walking trail and a boardwalk. Located at 3808 Edwards Mill Rd, Raleigh. BETHESDA PARK, DURHAM This park has a variety of activities that provide incredible opportunities for kids, including on of DPR’s best kept secrets, a high rope course that ends with a zip line. There’s also a rock climbing wall, playground, and hiking trails. Located at 1814 Stage Rd, Durham. HOMESTEAD PARK, CHAPEL HILL This is a green space that has an awesome skate park for the skater kids in your family. It also features lighted batting cages, 2 indoor swimming pools, a basketball court, athletic fields, and a dog park. Located at 100 Aquatic Dr, Chapel Hill.

When Kevin Corchiani lands in his native country of Turkey, his first thought is rice pudding. Made from his late mother’s recipe, sweetened with milk and spiced with cinnamon, Corchiani says his sister always has a batch timed to his flight.

His hope, he said, is to bring a piece of his homeland to the place he’s made his home, bringing a two-decade story full circle. Corchiani, born Kenan Demir in a small town outside Istanbul, came to Raleigh two decades ago as the adoptive son of NC State All-American and NBA player Chris Corchiani and his wife, Stewart Harris. Chris Corchiani, after graduating, spent three years in the NBA, finishing the rest of his professional basketball days in Europe. His first stop was Istanbul, where as a 24-year-old navigating a new city, he’d carry around a basketball card of when he played for the Boston Celtics as a means of introduction. There he met Demir, a 12-year-old who was delivering groceries after dropping out of middle school.

Eventually, Demir came to Raleigh, enrolling in middle school as a 16-year-old, but advanced quickly with the assistance of tutors. Demir attended Cardinal Gibbons High School, becoming a star athlete in his own right. He picked up a scholarship to run cross country at Appalachian State and later transferring to NC State.

Kevin Corchiani said he’s grateful for the life his adoptive parents gave him. He said they pulled him from a harsh and poor life to one of opportunity.

This accessible park sorts its play areas by age group, and also features a basketball court and 2 acres of trails. Located at Marla Dorrel Park in Cary.

But he missed many things from his youth, especially the food, living so far from the tastes and smells he grew up loving as a boy. “I really missed my mom’s cooking,” Corchiani said. “She cooked on a daily basis, and we always had family dinner. Even though we didn’t have much, we always had family dinner.”

KENTWOOD PARK, RALEIGH

Check out the searchable events calendar at kidstownnc.com

The two developed a big brother-little brother kind of connection. The next year, as Corchiani and Harris moved to Germany for a new season in a new league, Demir went with them.

After school, he worked as a mortgage broker in his American father’s firm and produced a Hollywood film, 2008’s “Broken Angel.” In 2005, at 22, his American parents legally adopted him, and he took the name Kevin Corchiani.

KIDS TOGETHER PLAYGROUND, CARY

If you’re looking for a disc golf course, look no further than Kentwood Park, a neighborhood park with a golf course, playgrounds, and plenty of shade. Located at 4531 Kaplan Dr, Raleigh.

Kevin Corchiani , left, of Sultan Kebab House on Western Boulevard makes menu suggestions to first-time customers, Doug Hopkins, left, and Charles Mosling. Juli Leonard

In Sultan Kebab House, Kevin Corchiani wants to serve authentic Turkish food, something he says has been hard to find in his years in Raleigh. Juli Leonard

Discover the convenience of ranch plan homes, downstairs bedrooms [partner] Sponsored by the Jim Allen Group You may have heard of homes that have a “ranch plan,” but is it right for you? What are the special characteristics of ranch style homes that make them so desirable to home buyers? Ranch plan homes are one-story houses usually with a wide, spacious layout. Floor plans are designed to be open and lead one room into another. All rooms are easily accessible with little to no “loss” of square footage that gets included with features like larger hallways, stairs, etc. Instead, homeowners have more space to make use of, to personalize and to spend time enjoying their furnishings. These home plans are more rare than others and are difficult to find because they’re wider and thus need wider lots to be founded upon. As buyers vastly prefer for master bedrooms and guest bedrooms to be downstairs, ranch plan homes are highly sought after and are especially popular with families, the elderly and disabled, and individuals who simply prefer the ease and practicality of the floor plan. Winston Ridge and Perry Farms (a new community with more homes coming soon) are two communities with housing prices that range from the 300’s to the 400’s. Ranch plan homes and downstairs bedrooms are only two of many other features that buyers may

choose from, such as spacious garages, stone or vinyl exteriors, and interior options like trey ceilings and granite countertops. Jackson Manor is a community whose prices range from the $450s to the $500s offering gorgeous, spacious multiple story homes with the customization buyers want. Stone and vinyl exteriors, beautiful lots with square footage options ranging from 3,000 to 3,500, and interior flooring options like carpet, hardwood, tile and ceramic are available to choose. And accessibility isn’t lost as downstairs masters and guest bedrooms may be found on the first floor. Stonewater, Falls Reserve and Waterstone Reserve are communities priced from the $600s and $700s and up, offering ample living space of up to 5,000 square feet and an equal amount of diversity of interior and exterior features found in the previously mentioned communities. This includes the first floor masters and other bedrooms, office rooms, stone, brick and vinyl exteriors and interior features like 9- and 10-foot ceilings and trey ceilings among an abundance of other features.
