After the best first-season of any Tribe volleyball coach in school history, Melissa Aldrich Shelton ’91 enters her second year on the sidelines with an immensely talented team that could add a ninth Colonial Athletic Association trophy to the W&M cabinet and return to the NCAA Tournament. “With the development of our returning players and the addition of six talented recruits, our squad will have terrific depth at every position,” said Shelton. “Our main objective during the pre-season and non-conference play will be to develop team chemistry as well as strong, focused leadership for our group. If we are able to come together as one united team, I believe we have the talent to be CAA Champions at the end of the season.” SETTERS With a third-year veteran and one of the most talented players from north of the border joining the team this year, Shelton hopes to reduce the impact of losing last year’s conference Setter of the Year to graduation. “Our battle at the setting position promises to be exciting all year,” Shelton said. “Consistency, leadership, and decision-making will be the factors that determine our starter.” Junior Cassie Crumal has the pre-season edge to lead the offense after two years as the top reserve. As a freshman in 2007, Crumal was thrown into the starting line-up at the start of the season and performed admirably, averaging more than 10.5 assists per set and garnering a pair of CAA Rookie of the Week awards. Despite moving back to a largely reserve role later that year and in 2008, she has been impressive in practice and the offseason, and is confident in her ability to direct the Tribe offense. Pushing Crumal for the starting spot will be freshman Jordyn Moloney out of Whitby, Ontario. The first Canadian to make her way to Williamsburg for volleyball, Moloney has led the Durham Attack club to the past five Ontario and Canadian Championships, earning All-Canada honors each year. In both 2005 and 2008, she was named MVP of the Canadian Championships, and in 2007, she was one half of the gold medal-winning 16U beach volleyball team at the Canadian Beach Championships. BACKCOURT Despite the loss of two senior backcourt specialists following 2008, William and Mary will look to keep its defense near the top of the CAA with a talented blend of veterans and newcomers. Senior Lindsey Pflugner made a very successful transition from hitter to libero last year and was a large part of the Tribe’s mid-season 11-match winning streak. In that span, she had
double-digit digs in 10 matches, including ninestraight to close the string. She also broke the 20-dig plateau three times, including a careerbest 27 digs at VCU. Pflugner led all defensive specialists with 75 digs, and ranked in the top 10 in the conference. Also the team’s best server, Pflugner was first on the team with 26 aces and second with a .937 success percentage while serving. Two standout freshmen will be able to learn under Pflugner in 2009, and push for playing time of their own down the stretch. Gabi Smith was the 3A State Player of the Year in Georgia last year after leading Woodward Academy to the state championship as the starting libero. Playing with the A5 Volleyball Club, Smith was a part of the 2007 16U National Junior Olympic championship team. Delaney Gordon earned all-league honors as the libero at Las Lomas High while playing against some of the best teams in the San Francisco Bay area as a senior, and averaged more than five digs per set in her final campaign. “Both Gabi and Delaney have all the tools to develop into strong backcourt players,” said Shelton. “Each possess a strong serve and a proven ability to perform at clutch times. I expect both to contribute greatly and help uphold our reputation as a strong defensive team.” MIDDLE The Tribe has a strong corps of middles returning in 2009, led by two-time all-conference middle Ginny Bray and senior Katie McCarney. As returning starters, both will be expected to lead the team as they continue to improve their own skill sets. “We have an extremely talented group of middles on our roster this season,” noted Shelton. “Each one of the four has their own unique strengths. It is quite possible that all four will see significant time this fall.” Bray has earned All-CAA honors each of her two years at W&M, adding third-team accolades last season to the all-rookie selection she earned in 2007. In 2008, she ranked second in the CAA with a .297 attack percentage, led W&M with 13 solo blocks, and contributed 2.9 points per set, second-best on the team. McCarney was the team’s top blocker last year, averaging 0.89 per set. A major part of the Tribe attack with 2.23 points per set, McCarney will be counted on to continue her steady offensive output and create chances for teammates by making opponents divide their blockers. Sophomore Anne Dorff saw only limited action as a freshman last year, but will be asked to live up to her All-Ohio pedigree in 2009. The best blocker of all the returning players, Dorff is sure to challenge for court time during the season. Joining the middle group is freshman
Shaylin O’Connell from Loudoun County High in northern Virginia. A starter on the past two Virginia AA state championship teams, O’Connell was named the district MVP as a senior and also garnered first-team All-Met honors from the Washington Post. OUTSIDE HITTER Hitting again looks to be a major strength for the Tribe, with the top three players from last year all returning and two superb recruits donning the Green and Gold for the first time. Junior Erin Skipper is an early favorite for post-season honors after being named to the all-region team in 2008, the first-such award for W&M since 1991. Last season, Skipper led the conference and ranked in the top-50 nationally in kills per set, and also led the CAA with 4.4 points per set. While the addition of several options to the Tribe offense might mean fewer chances for Skipper, Coach Shelton looks for her attack percentage to rise and her kill rate to remain relatively constant as she continues to learn the nuances of the position. Along with Skipper, the Tribe returns senior Lauren Powell, who has ranked second in kills per set each of the last two seasons. In 2008, Powell’s defense caught up with her offense, and she ranked second on the team with 290 digs (2.9 per set), quadrupling her career total in the space of a single season. This year, she can expect to contend for all-conference honors while anchoring the right side of the Tribe attack. The final outsides returning this season are senior Bryana Carey and sophomore Brooke Bauernfeind. With starting experience as both a left- and right-side hitter, Carey might be the Tribe’s most versatile player. She worked hard in the off-season to improve her consistency, and could see playing time in a number of different roles. Bauernfeind saw significant improvement in her game during the spring. As a constant in the Tribe line-up, she finished as the top combination attacker and passer during the spring. Newcomers Lindsay Kresch and Gina Lang will add two players with six-rotation abilities to the Tribe this fall. Kresch played the 2007 season at Northwestern before sitting out 2008, and transferred to W&M over the summer with three years of eligibility remaining. One of the top-75 recruits in the nation in 2007, she averaged 1.36 kills per set in 10 matches for the Wildcats, including six kills and four digs at Indiana. Also joining the Tribe this fall is freshman Gina Lang, out of Valparaiso High in Indiana. A terrific all-around player, Lang was an all-area selection as a senior after totalling 281 kills, 318 digs, 183 assists, and 47 service aces.

HEAD COACH
MELISSA SHELTON
Second Season at W&M
15th Season Overall
William and Mary alumna Melissa Aldrich Shelton ’91 returned home for the 2008 season, and promptly became the winningest rookie coach in Tribe history. The seventh head coach in the history of Tribe volleyball, Shelton came back to Williamsburg after spending 13 years patrolling the court for the University of Virginia. She is the first Tribe graduate to helm the volleyball program, taking over the reins upon the retirement of Debbie Hill in January of 2008 after 30 years of coaching. The 2008 season was a great success for the Tribe program, and a promise of even better days to come, as Shelton’s athletes rattled off a 19-9 record and a trip to the CAA Tournament for the second year in a row. After opening the year 3-3, including tough losses to top-20 teams Stanford and Illinois, the Tribe posted an 11-match winning streak for the first time since the 1990 season, including three-straight five-set victories over CAA foes Virginia Commonwealth, Delaware, and Towson to open conference play. The team also won three of its four non-conference tournaments with a combined record of 10-0, and garnered national accolades when senior setter Kim Mount was named as a National Athlete of the Week by CVU.com after totaling 81 assists in a pair of 3-0 conference victories. Mount would go on to be named firstteam All-CAA and all-state, and became the first W&M player to be selected as CAA Setter of the Year. The sophomore class also thrived under Shelton’s direction, winning MVP honors at three of the four in-season tournaments as well as several post-season accolades. Middle Ginny Bray was named MVP at both the N.C. State Invitational and the Tribe’s own Colonial Challenge, and became the first underclassman since Natalie Kamper in 1995 and 1996 to earn two all-conference citations. Bray earned third-team honors in 2008, after being selected to the all-rookie team in 2007. Her classmate Erin Skipper also had a very impressive year, as she became the first Tribe player since Jennifer Torns in 1991 to be named to the AVCA All-Region team. An honorable-mention all-region selection, Skipper was also a first-team all-conference and all-state player after leading the CAA in kills, kill-average, points, and point-average. Even though sets were shorter in 2008 than in years past (with the win coming at 25, instead of 30 points), Skipper still managed only the fourth 400-kill campaign in school history. During her time at the helm of UVA’s program, Shelton compiled a 235-179 overall record and guided the Cavaliers to pair of NCAA Tournament appearances. The at-large berths, coming in consecutive seasons (1998, 1999), were the program’s initial appearances in the national tournament. Additionally, Shelton led Virginia to five 20-win seasons, highlighted by a 26-win campaign in 1998 that marked the second-most victories in school history. Named as the State Coach of the Year by the Virginia Association of Sports Information Directors three times, Shelton was by far the longest-tenured and most successful coach in UVA’s history. She coached the Cavaliers in 43 percent of the programs matches and wins under her direction account for 48 percent of the school’s total. All six of Virginia’s All-Americans excelled under her tutelage, and her players also won all but three of the program’s all-region and 26 out of 45 All-ACC honors. Her student-athletes also excel in the classroom, earning a 100 percent graduation rate since 1996. In 2008, Kim Mount was selected by CoSIDA and ESPN The Magazine to the District III all-academic second team, the first all-academic honor for W&M since 1996. Prior to taking over the reigns as head coach at Virginia, Shelton served as an assistant at Clemson University from 1993-95. During her tenure with the Tigers, she helped the team win 55 matches and achieve its first ever NCAA Tournament bids, as the squad earned back-toback berths in 1993 and 1994. Shelton’s first coaching position was at Arkansas State University, where she served as an assistant from 1991-93. She helped the Indians to a pair of Sun Belt Conference championships, as the program garnered its first-ever NCAA Tournament bid in 1992. A three-year starter for the Tribe, Shelton was elected as a team captain during her junior and senior seasons. She helped W&M claim four consecutive CAA titles and earn two National Invitational Volleyball Championship appearances. An All-CAA selection as a junior, she was chosen to the CAA All-Tournament Team during her senior season. Shelton graduated from the College in 1991 with a bachelors of the arts degree in history, and earned a Master’s in exercise science while at Arkansas State. A native of Long Beach, California, Shelton and her husband, Gordon, reside in Williamsburg with their four-year-old son, Andrew.

MARLOWE Assistant Coach Second Season B.S. Exercise Science Truman State, 2003 Monica Marlowe is in her second season with the Tribe in 2009, after helping the team to a 19-9 record and a spot in the CAA Tournament. Her duties include assisting with all off-court aspects of the program with specific emphasis on recruiting. In the gym, she is responsible for tutoring the team’s setters. In her first season, Marlowe helped Kim Mount become the first W&M player ever named CAA Setter of the Year, as the senior led the conference in assist average and also garnered first-team honors in the conference and the state. Despite having fewer assist opportunities than in any other season over the past 34 years, Mount posted the eighth 1,000 assist season in school history. Marlowe joined the College in 2008 after two seasons as an assistant for the Bradley University Braves. While in Peoria, she worked with the setters while also coordinating team travel, film exchange, fundraising, and alumni relations. Before joining the Bradley staff, Marlowe spent three seasons at the University of Nebraska Kearney, the first two as a graduate assistant pursuing a Master’s of Art in Education in Sports Administration, and the final year as a full-time assistant. During her time with UNK, the Lopers made the NCAA Division II Elite Eight all three years, advancing to the quarterfinals in 2004 and to the championship match in 2005. Marlowe also helped with the development of seven AVCA All-Americans during her time in Nebraska. Marlowe graduated from Truman State University in 2003 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Exercise Science, after starting at setter for all four years under Tribe alumna Becky Eggering Pike ’93. A four-time All-MIAA first-team honoree, Marlowe led Truman State to the 2002 NCAA Division II title game and garnered second-team AVCA All-America accolades. The 1999 AVCA Regional Freshman of the Year, she went on to earn AVCA All-Region honors each of her last three seasons and led the Bulldogs to two conference championships and three NCAA tournament appearances. Marlowe graduated as the all-time career leader for assists per game with 11.43, and second all-time in total assists (5,475).

CRITZER Assistant Coach First Season B.S. Mathematics/B.A. History William & Mary, 1997 John Critzer makes his return to Williamsburg this fall, joining Melissa Shelton’s staff as an assistant coach helping with all aspects of the Tribe program. “I am excited to welcome John back to the College and our volleyball program,” Shelton said. “As we blend the seven new faces into our program this preseason I believe we will find our team has significant talent and drive. I am confident we will be able to use John’s coaching experiences to help us reach or potential and attain our goal of winning the CAA Championship.” Critzer returns to Williamsburg after three years in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he was a head coach within the Colorado Juniors Volleyball Club. His Colorado Juniors teams produced nine collegiate recruits, a top-five finisher at the Asics National Championships in 2009 and two National Qualifiers. Before heading west, he spent four years in Roanoke, Virginia coaching at all three levels, collegiate, high school, and club. From 2002-03 Critzer was a volunteer assistant at Radford University, where he was involved in all aspects of the practice and training regimen. From 2002-06, he served at Salem High as the junior varsity head coach and varsity assistant, and developed the school’s first off-season training and conditioning program. His work with the middle and outside hitters on the varsity team helped Salem reach the postseason three out of four years, and his JV team had a four-year record of 57-23. On top of all that, Critzer was also an assistant and head coach with the Roanoke Juniors Volleyball Club, responsible for the training of middle hitters and helping to produce nine college signees including six Division I recruits. No stranger to the Williamsburg area, Critzer graduated in 1997 from the College with dual degrees in mathematics and history, and was a student and volunteer assistant coach with the Tribe from 1996-98. From 1998-2002, he served as the head coach at Lafayette High in Williamsburg, helping build a program that had only existed since 1996 into a state contender while overseeing budgeting, fundraising, and community relations. His athletes had an average GPA of over 3.6 in the classroom, and reached the state finals in 1998 after winning the regional championship. The Rams reached the regional semifinals each of the next three years, and Critzer was honored as the Bay Rivers District Coach of the Year in 2002.

“I chose W&M because it had everything I was looking for in a school. It is an excellent acait … demic institution with a world renowned business school. My future teammates love to play the game, are positive, fun-loving, and hard working. They are the type of people I want to be around.”

CAA VOLLEYBALL SILVER ANNIVERSARY TEAM The Colonial Athletic Association is celebrating its 25th Anniversary in 2009-10 and to commemorate the occasion, the league will sponsor a Silver Anniversary team for each of its sports. Each team goes through a process of nominations from each institution’s sports information department, before the final team is screened and chosen by a panel of coaches and administrators. The W&M volleyball team had five of the 25 players selected to the Silver Anniversary Team. The Tribe total was second among league schools. W&M moved to Division I in 1982, with the NCAA first keeping official statistics in 1983. Home matches are in ALL CAPS for the 1975 season, and beginning again in 1983. For the years 1976-1982, accurate records of where matches were played have so far proved lost, unless otherwise noted as “at”, or “vs”. Postseason tournaments include state championships (VFISW, VAIAW, and VIL), CAA tournaments, ECAC tournaments, the NCAA tournament, and the NIVC tournament. TRIBE VOLLEYBALL ALUMAE When a student-athlete commits to play volleyball at William and Mary, she becomes part of a very special program. First of all, the College is rich in tradition. For more than 300 years, W&M has been in the business of education and is the second-oldest institution of higher learning in the nation. W&M’s noble roots go back to its charter from England in 1693. The volleyball program also boasts a proud past. Debbie Hill guided its fortunes for more than 30 years before retiring at the end of the 2007 season with a record of 562 wins and 408 losses. Hill’s greatest achievement, however, was not her winning percentage on the court but her impeccable graduation rate among her student-athletes. Volleyball players who progress through the William and Mary program not only compete in a Division I setting but also receive one of the finest educations in the country. Each of the last two years, the volleyball team was honored with the Public Recognition Award by the NCAA for achieving a perfect graduation rate. Additionally, W&M has also been a recipient of the Team Academic Award from the AVCA. The William and Mary family came full circle on January 18, 2008, when Athletics Director Terry Driscoll announced the hiring of Melissa Aldrich Shelton ’91 to become the College’s seventh head volleyball coach. She is the first alumna to take the reins in the 37-year history of the program. W&M graduates span the continuum of professions. A glimpse at the roster of volleyball alumnae on the following pages confirms this diversity. Physicians and archeologists,
computer analysts and corporate bankers, lawyers and teachers, veterinarians and business executives, biologists and chemists, coaches and researchers — the list is varied, yet they all share a common bond: W&M volleyball. W&M volleyball players represent an eclectic blend of talents. Some athletes could have played in top 20 programs but opted to focus on their academic goals. Other players are walk-ons who have passed up scholarship opportunities to attend W&M. Although W&M may not be a top 10 program, that does not eclipse the experience of playing in the “big time.” Life at William and Mary is more than balancing academics and athletics. Tribe athletes also take advantage of numerous volunteer activities, and they have the opportunity to join sororities and participate in intramurals. Many have been active in Housing Partnership projects. Others have helped with the campus day care program, the Muscarelle Museum, or Big Brother/Big Sister programs. Whatever the inclination, the athlete is encouraged to expand her horizons and develop individually. At William and Mary, volleyball is time-consuming and requires dedication — but not at the expense of educating the whole person. In addition, the Tribe has been tremendously successful at the conference level as evidenced by eight Colonial Athletic Association championships. The team has also seen time in the national spotlight with its first appearance in the NCAA Volleyball Tournament in 2001.

The College of William and Mary is a public university located in Williamsburg, Va. Founded in 1693 by Royal Charter issued by King William III and Queen Mary II of England, William and Mary is the second oldest college in the country after Harvard. William and Mary has a long history of liberal arts education and a growing research and science curriculum that demonstrates a strong commitment to undergraduate research. The College, which became a state university in 1906, has been designated a “Public Ivy,” and for nine straight years has been ranked by U.S. News & World Report as the sixth-best public university in the country – and the nation’s top small public university. Also referred to as “the alma mater of a nation,” the College has educated four U.S. Presidents – George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe and John Tyler, which is the third most of any college in the country. William and Mary also claims several firsts, including the 1776 creation of Phi Beta Kappa – the country’s first academic honor society – the first honor code of conduct for college students, and the first collegiate law school, established in 1779. William and Mary is also home to the Sir Christopher Wren Building – the country’s oldest academic building still in use – and the President’s House, the oldest home of a university president still in use.

The Tribe Athletics Department finished 99th nationally (as of May 28) in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Standings for 2008-09, a number that ranked second among Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) programs and fourth in the state of Virginia. The Directors’ Cup, which was created by the NACDA and USA Today in 1993-94, is a program that honors institutions maintaining a broad-based program, achieving success in many sports, both men’s and women’s. W&M has placed among the top 100 nationally in 12 of the program’s 16 years, while leading the CAA on seven occasions. W&M has produced more CAA Championships than any program in the league’s history. The College owns 95 league crowns, nearly 40 more than its closest competitor. The Tribe raked in the awards in 2008-09 as well, tallying a combined 197 all-conference honors, 34 All-America honors and six league players of the year. During the 2008-09 season, the Green and Gold produced an overall athletics winning percentage of 68.2, while racking up a combined 888 wins. Along with its accomplishments on the field of play, the Tribe is just as successful in the classroom, epitomizing the term student-athlete. In the NCAA’s inaugural Academic Progress Report in 2005, W&M ranked fourth among Division I teams, which was the highest of any athletic scholarshipgranting school and of any public school. Since the inception of the CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year, W&M has produced 28 honorees, more than any school in the conference.

Jimmye Laycock Football Center
Busch Field
William and Mary is committed to building and maintaining outstanding facilities for all 23 of its varsity athletic teams. The College has demonstrated this commitment by investing approximately $16 million toward the construction and upgrade of its athletics facilities during just the last six years. Among W&M’s recent projects was the construction of the $11 million, 30,000-square foot Jimmye Laycock Football Center, which was dedicated in June of 2008. This past summer, Busch Field experienced a renovation that included a total revamp of the field, underlying pad, and drainage systems. The renovation created a competition surface that ranks alongside those used at the U.S. National Training Centers in Virginia Beach, Va., Chula Vista, Calif., and that used at last year’s Olympic Games. In 2005, Kaplan Arena received an upgrade with the installation of 6,900-square foot permanent wood floor along with rubberized sports flooring on the open end of the arena to accomodate track and field and other multi-purpose activities. A year earlier, the home of Tribe soccer and lacrosse, Albert-Daly Field was dedicated, providing the programs with a $1 million all-natural grass facility.
