2010 TRIBE BASEBALL
2010 PREIVEW The William and Mary baseball team returns 18 players, including 10 pitchers from last season’s 24-win squad. Head coach Frank Leoni became the fastest Tribe skipper to 100 wins at the institution during the 2009 campaign with a victory over Liberty. The Tribe also tallied its first win over ACC-foe Virginia Tech, 14-10, since 1991. While the 2010 Green and Gold squad will be a youthful one, Leoni and his staff of Jad Prachniak, Kyle Padgett and George Fisher will have a talented group to mold and shape as the Tribe strives to return to the upper echelon of the CAA. The following is a preseason question and answer with Leoni on the upcoming season: Q: Last year was a reshaping year for the program, talk a little about what your vision of W&M baseball is and will be in the future? FL: “2009 was a disappointing season for us, but it signaled the beginning of a transition for our program. For too long, I think our program has been built around offense. To me, this explains our excellent home record and less than stellar road record. We are making a conscious effort to strengthen our pitching and defense. And, while we’ll be young in 2010, I believe we will take another important step to accomplishing this goal.” Q: This year’s team is young, but very talented. Which of the newcomers do you expect to play significant roles for the Tribe this season? FL: “This year’s team is significantly young and inexperienced, but I have been very impressed by the overall level of talent throughout the fall. Since we really have no choice other than to play many first-year players, I expect several to make important contributions in 2010.” Q: With such a young team, how important will your captains be this season? FL: “Leadership at all levels is crucial to success. We all need to do a better job in 2010. Captains are vital to bridge communication between coaches and players, to help keep everyone on the same page. We utilized a more sophisticated process to select our captains this year, and I believe that Chris Jensen, Tyler Truxell and Chris Forsten will do an excellent job of helping our team to stay focused and keep things in perspective.” Q: What are the team’s goals for the 2010 season? FL: “Our goal is the same every year - make the CAA playoffs. Once you’re in the CAA playoffs, you have a chance to make the NCAA tournament. For a young team like ours, making the CAA tournament would be a major accomplishment.”
Q: What do you feel is the strength(s) of the team this season? FL: “We should be at our best on the mound and defensively in 2010. Although college baseball can be very offensive, pitching is still the name of the game. So, I’m pleased with the direction we’re headed for the long term. Don’t get me wrong, offense is very important, and I expect ours to develop over time, however, our pitching and defense has been assembled to be strong now and in the future.” Q: How was the fall season and how much did it help the team? FL: “Our line-up has completely turned over from the record setting group in 2008 two years ago. I was not sure what to expect this fall, except I knew our pitching would be much deeper. As the fall progressed, I watched the players develop nicely. We clearly still have a long way to go, but our coaching staff is much more optimistic now after such a promising fall season.” Q: After losing three All-CAA performers, and 10 total lettermen from last season, who do you see stepping into the roles left by those talented players? FL: “We have lost a lot of talent over the past two years, but so is the nature of college athletics. To me, it’s exciting to enter a new season as underdogs with so many new faces. We have a real opportunity in 2010 to get contributions from many different players. This will not be the type of team where our opponents can focus on one or two guys. And, after a very difficult early season stretch, I believe our team will grow with confidence heading into the CAA portion of the schedule.”

HEAD COACH FRANK LEONI
4
After losing two All-Americans and three more All-CAA standouts, the 2009 Tribe baseball team fell just a game short of a .500 record in 2009, finishing the year at 24-25. Despite the record, the College showed flashes of the bright future the program has ahead of it, and with a highly-talented corps of newcomers in 2010, the Tribe looks to have a breakout season on the horizon. During the 2009 campaign, the Tribe had many great moments, highlighted by Leoni’s 100th win at William and Mary on April 7, 2009. In the 2-1 victory over Liberty at Plumeri Park, Leoni became the fastest coach in W&M history to reach the 100-win milestone. Another highlight for the Tribe in 2009 was its play down the stretch. In a stretch of games from April 12 to May 10, the Tribe went 12-3, winning series against James Madison, Towson, and Longwood. Included in those games was also, arguably, the College’s best win of the season, a 14-10 come-from-behind win over Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. The Green and Gold scored six runs in the top of the ninth to win its first game against the Hokies in 18 years. Individually, senior Rob Nickle led a group of five players who earned all-conference recognition in 2009, being named to the AllCAA Second Team, while classmate Tyler Stampone and junior Kevin Landry were named to the third team. Freshmen Matt Davenport and Chris Forsten were each chosen for the All-CAA Rookie Team for their fine freshman seasons. After the season, the College saw three of its players move on to the professional ranks. Junior Kevin Landry was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 21st round of the MLB Draft, while both seniors Tyler Stampone and Jeff Jones signed free agent contracts with the Orioles and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, respectively. After putting together a winning mark in 2007, the 2008 team surpassed all expectations in piecing together a 36-21 record, only one win shy of tying the school record for victories in a season, and sending four players into the professional ranks in the MLB draft. The Tribe posted an outstanding 26-6 mark at Plumeri Park, and finished fourth in the Colonial Athletic Association with a 16-13 record. Returning to the CAA Tournament for the first time since 2004, the Tribe handed No. 1-seed UNC Wilmington only its fifth loss of the year to a conference team, and was one of the last four teams standing in the semifinal round. One of the nation’s most dangerous teams at the plate, W&M finished the year ranked third in the NCAA with a .343 batting average, and also led the CAA in fielding defense for the second year in a row. In 2007, the squad posted a 29-25 mark and boasted a 2110 record at Plumeri Park. Additionally, the Tribe led the Colonial Athletic Association in team batting average (.319) and fielding percentage (.969). The season also marked a milestone for Leoni, who earned his 300th career win when the Tribe defeated Towson, 6-0, on March 18. In addition to the success experienced by the team collectively, a number of individuals posted impressive seasons under Leoni’s tutelage. Leading the group in 2007 was Greg Sexton, who was selected to five All-America teams after finishing the season ranked second nationally with a .455 batting average. Honored as the CAA co-Player of the Year, Sexton was drafted by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays with the first pick of the 10th round. The selection marked the fifth consecutive season in which Leoni had a player drafted, as Joe Kantakevich was chosen by the Seattle Mariners in the 13th round in 2006 and Rhode Island sent at least one player to the professional ranks in each of Leoni’s last three seasons. Commensurate with the team’s success, several players had outstanding individual seasons in 2008 as well. Mike Sheridan followed up his 2007 campaign by leading the team and the league in batting, and was rewarded with third-team All-American honors from the ABCA and Louisville Slugger, in addition to being named W&M’s first VaSID State Player of the Year, first-team all-region, All-ECAC, All-CAA, all-state, and to the Wallace Award Watch List, Howser Trophy Watch List, and the CAA all-tournament team. Sheridan would go on to become the first of four Tribe players taken in the MLB Draft, being selected by the Tampa Bay Rays with the first pick of the fifth round. Along with Sheridan, both catcher Tim Park and outfielder Ben Guez earned All-American honors, giving the Tribe three All-Americans in one season for the first time ever. Park was a third-team selection by Louisville Slugger and made three Player of the Year watch lists, while Guez was tabbed by the Jewish Sports Review with first-team honors and was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 19th round. A hallmark of Leoni-coached team is tenacious, fundamentally sound hitting. After earning CAA All-Freshman Team accolades in

HEAD COACH FRANK LEONI
2006, first baseman Mike Sheridan continued to improve with Leoni’s guidance and was honored as the 2007 NCAA statistical champion for the toughest player to strikeout. With just five strikeouts in 209 at-bats, he finished the year with a ratio of just one strikeout per every 41.8 at-bats. The impressive figure represented the nation’s best mark since 1999. Sheridan is the second player to accomplish the feat under Leoni’s tutelage. In 2001, All-America shortstop Mike LaBarbera led the nation with just five strikeouts in 198 at-bats. During his initial season in Williamsburg, Leoni guided a relatively inexperienced W&M club to a 23-29 record overall and an 11-19 mark in CAA play. Despite the modest record, the College improved consistently throughout the season and finished the year by winning 10 of its final 13 contests, missing the CAA playoffs by just a single game. During the impressive stretch run, the Green and Gold claimed three of its final four conference series and was playing as well as any team in the league. In addition to rebuilding the product on the field, Leoni has been instrumental in a number of upgrades to Plumeri Park. While the facility already ranked among the best in the region, the minor renovations have enhanced the park. Among the upgrades were a 10-foot artificial turf halo added behind the home plate area, bi-level wooden benches in the dugouts, upgraded fence and stadium padding on the backstop. Leoni came to the College after a long and successful stint as the head coach at the University of Rhode Island, where he was the winningest coach in the school’s history. A URI graduate, Leoni guided the Rams for 13 seasons and led the program to unprecedented success. In addition to compiling a 146-118-1 record during his final five seasons, he led the squad to two consecutive Atlantic 10 regular-season championships and three consecutive Atlantic 10 East Division championships. In 2005, Rhode Island posted a 34-21 mark and earned the program’s initial NCAA Tournament berth after claiming the A-10 title. Under Leoni’s watch, the Rams earned at least 24 wins in each of his last seven seasons and compiled a conference record of 54-18 from 2003-05. During his tenure with URI, Leoni posted an overall record of 266-343-3. In 2004, he led the Rams to a school-record 35 victories and a
20-4 mark in A-10 play, becoming just the second school in league history to win 20 conference games. His accomplishments did not go unrecognized, as he was named the A-10 Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season. Additionally, he garnered New England Coach of the Year accolades for his efforts. “We are really excited to have Frank Leoni as our new baseball coach,” W&M Athletics Director Terry Driscoll said at the time of Leoni’s hiring in August, 2005. “His 13 years at the University of Rhode Island demonstrated his ability to overcome the challenges necessary to build a program to an NCAA-caliber competitor. In that same period, his teams demonstrated tremendous academic success. Together, his academic and athletic success makes him a terrific fit for the College of William and Mary and its baseball program.” “I am extremely honored to become the next head baseball coach at and Mary,” Leoni said at the time of his hiring. “This is a tremendous opportunity, and I thank Terry Driscoll and the entire William and Mary community for their confidence. I am excited to get started and to build upon the tradition of William and Mary baseball.” “My plan for Tribe Baseball is to build a program in which every student- athlete, coach, administrator and alumnus feels a strong sense of ownership and pride,” Leoni said. “In the longterm, my goal is for William and Mary to become the model baseball program in the CAA - one which enjoys exceptional on-field success without compromising the educational mission of its student- athletes.” Coupled with his team’s success, Leoni oversaw the development of a number of players who continued their baseball careers in the professional ranks. Four of Leoni’s players were drafted from 2003-05, while two others signed professional contracts.
In 2005, pitcher Zack Zuercher was drafted in the ninth round by the Saint Louis Cardinals. Additionally, third baseman Mike Rainville and closer Mick Lefort signed free agent contracts with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and Chicago Cubs, respectively. Following the 2004 season, second-team All-America first baseman Dan Batz was a sixth-round draft pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers. That came on the heels of pitchers Reid Willett (Chicago Cubs, 21st round) and Jared Trout (Oakland Athletics, 28th round) getting drafted following the 2003 season. Another of Leoni’s top recruits at URI, Stephen Homes, was selected by the New York Mets during the fifth round of the 2006 MLB draft. In 2001, shortstop Mike LaBarbera earned All-America status and signed with the Montreal Expos. While the accomplishments on the field are impressive, Leoni’s commitment to developing student-athletes who excel in the classroom is also notable. At Rhode Island, he coached two District I Academic All-Americans and four Academic AllConference selections during his final three years. The tradition of success has continued at W&M, as Sexton and Jeff Lunardi ’05 have each earned Academic All-District III acclaim. Additionally, the ‘05 URI team and ‘06 W&M squad were recognized among the top 10 percent of all D-I programs for the Academic Progress Rating (APR). Not only was Leoni a presence on the field, he had a positive impact on the Rhode Island community. He ran several clinics for local children, and his summer camps were among the most popular in New England. The Cranston, Rhode Island, native was an A-10 All-Academic performer as a shortstop for the Rams and held six school records at the conclusion of the 1991 season. He earned a bachelor of science degree in accounting in 1990 and completed work on his master’s degree in Business Administration from URI in 2003. He and his wife Kerri have two daughters: Karsen, eight, and Casey, five.

JAD PRACHNIAK
Fifth Season at W&M
Rhode Island (2005)
A former pitcher for head coach Frank Leoni at the University of Rhode Island, Jad Prachniak is in his fifth season as an assistant coach at William and Mary. Prachniak serves as the Tribe’s pitching coach and assists with recruiting. Over the past four years, he has been instrumental in developing four MLB Draft picks, including Kevin Landry last spring, who was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles. Overall, pitchers under Prachniak’s tutelage account for 33 entries in the W&M all-time top-10 lists, and five school records. In the 2008 season, the Tribe’s staff finished the regular season with 20 saves, which tied the College for second most in the nation. Prior to joining the College’s staff, Prachniak was a volunteer assistant for Leoni at Rhode Island, where the Rams captured the 2005 Atlantic 10 championship, culminating in a regional appearance at Long Beach State. In five years as a coach, Prachniak has coached seven players who have gone on to pitch at the professional level. Prachniak was a four-year letterwinner with the Rams from 2001-04 and compiled a career record of 3-5. During his junior season, he earned a 2-1 mark with a 3.48 ERA, the lowest among URI starting pitchers. Additionally, he limited the opposition to a team-best .243 batting average and helped propel the Rams to the Atlantic 10 Eastern Division Championship. As a senior, Prachniak served as a captain and helped lead the squad to the Atlantic 10 regular-season title. That season he also received a ScholarAthlete Award from the Rhode Island House of Representatives.
ASSISTANT COACH
KYLE PADGETT
& Former William and Mary standout infielder Kyle Padgett enters his third season on the Tribe baseball staff in 2010. Padgett assists primarily with the hitting as well as infielders and outfielders, while his game duties include serving as the third base coach. Additionally, he assists with administrative and field maintenance duties. After a stellar career at the College, Padgett was drafted by the Florida Marlins in the 18th round of the 2005 MLB Draft. He played most of the 2005 season with the Gulf Coast League Marlins before spending the majority of the following season with the Jupiter Hammerheads of the Florida State League. Padgett was a member of the Washington Wild Things of the Frontier League in 2007. Padgett finished his career at W&M with a .288 batting average, 18 home runs, 138 RBI and 132 runs scored. He ranks ninth on the program’s all-time list for games played (196) and 10th in games started (178). Padgett’s best season came as a senior when he hit .311 with nine home runs, 52 RBI and 46 runs scored. A native of Needham, Massachusetts, Padgett graduated from the College with a bachelors of science degree in kinesiology.
ASSISTANT COACH
GEORGE FISHER
First Season at W&M
6
Averett (2001)
George Fisher joins the Tribe staff this season as the volunteer assistant and will serve as the College’s second pitching coach. For the past seven years, Fisher had served as an assistant coach for Averett University, where he worked primarily with the pitching staff. Fisher also assisted with recruiting, running practices, and game day management. During Fisher’s stint with Averett, he helped coach six USA South All-Conference pitchers, two all-region selections, one conference pitcher of the year, one region pitcher of the year, and one MLB draft choice. Fisher also served as the head coach of the Averett University junior varsity baseball team in 2008 and since 2004, was the assistant director in charge of running the baseball camps at Averett. LEONI FASTEST TO 100 WINS IN PROGRAM HISTORY Tribe head coach Frank Leoni became the fastest coach to reach 100 wins in program history on April 7, 2009 when the College defeated Liberty, 2-1, at Plumeri Park. Leoni reached the 100-win milestone in his 192nd game. Entering the 2010 season, Leoni now only stands 22 victories from 400 career wins. TRIBE HAS FIVE PLAYERS EARN ALL-CAA HONORS Senior Rob Nickle led a group of five players who earned all-conference recognition in 2009, being named to the All-CAA Second Team, while classmate Tyler Stampone and junior Kevin Landry were named to the third team. Freshmen Matt Davenport and Chris Forsten were each chosen for the All-CAA Rookie Team for their fine freshman seasons. KEVIN LANDRY GETS DRAFTED, STAMPONE AND JONES SIGN FREE AGENT CONTRACTS After a great junior campaign, Kevin Landry was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 21st round of the MLB Draft. Later in the spring, Tyler Stampone and Jeff Jones signed free agent contracts to play professionally. Stampone signed with the Orioles, while Jones inked a deal with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. TRIBE GOES 12-3 DURING KEY STRETCH LATE IN THE SEASON The Tribe played its best baseball of the season late in the year in 2009. In a 15-game stretch from April 12 to May 10, the College posted a 12-3 record. In that stretch, the Tribe earned series wins over James Madison, Towson, and Longwood, along with a dramatic, come-from-behind victory at Virginia Tech. During the great stretch of play, the Green and Gold were winning games by an average margin of over three runs a contest. COLLEGE RALLIES IN NINTH FOR WIN AT VIRGINIA TECH One of the Tribe’s best wins of the season came on April 21 in Blacksburg, Virginia against ACC-foe Virginia Tech. Down 10-8 entering the ninth, the Green and Gold scored six runs in the ninth inning to pull off an improbable comeback and defeat the Hokies, 14-10. The come-from-behind triumph was the first over VT since the 1991 season.

CAA DOMINANCE
and where they are located ....
The Colonial Athletic Association celebrates its 25th Anniversary in 2009-10 with memories of a proud and storied past and visions of an exciting future. Regarded as one of the nation’s top collegiate conferences, the CAA encompasses five of the nation’s nine largest metropolitan areas with a geographic footprint that stretches from Boston to Atlanta. The conference has produced 16 national team champions in five different sports, 33 individual national champions, 12 national players of the year, 12 national coaches of the year and 12 Honda Award winners. Just as impressive, however, are the honors accumulated away from competition, which include five Rhodes Scholars and 20 NCAA post-graduate scholars. In 2008-09, the CAA had more than 1,700 of the league’s 4,000 student-athletes received the Commissioner’s Academic Award after posting at least a 3.2 grade point average while lettering in a varsity sport. The conference ranked in the top 10 in the nation in 12 of its 23 sports in the latest APR report released by the NCAA. The landscape of the conference stretches along the majority of the East Coast, and includes six of the nation’s top 25 media markets – New York (1), Philadelphia (4), Boston (7), Atlanta (8), Washington, D.C. (9) and Baltimore (25). The number of television homes in the CAA market exceeds 20 million. The CAA currently sponsors 23 sports with the addition of a 12-team football league in 2007 and women’s rowing in 2009. In 2008-09, 28 teams earned NCAA Tournament berths and 45 student-athletes received All-America honors.
Overall, William and Mary has won a total of 95 Colonial Athletic Association championships, more than 20 percent of all league titles awarded and far more than any other conference school.

Albert-Daly Field
William and Mary is committed to building and maintaining outstanding facilities for all 23 of its varsity athletic teams. The College has demonstrated this commitment by investing approximately $16 million toward the construction and upgrade of its athletics facilities during just the last six years. Among W&M’s recent projects was the completion of the $11 million, 30,000-square foot Jimmye Laycock Football Center, which was dedicated in June of 2008. This past summer, the Laycock Center renovated the foyer to include photos, information and memorablia on the Tribe’s storied football tradition. This past summer, Busch Field experienced a renovation that included a total revamp of the field, underlying pad, water cannon and drainage system. The renovation created a competition surface that ranks alongside those used at the U.S. National Training Centers in Virginia Beach, Va., Chula Vista, Calif., and that used at last year’s Olympic Games. In 2005, Kaplan Arena received an upgrade with the installation of 6,900-square foot permanent wood floor along with rubberized sports flooring on the open end of the arena to accomodate track and field and other multi-purpose activities. A year earlier, the home of Tribe soccer and lacrosse, Albert-Daly Field was dedicated, providing the programs with a $1 million all-natural grass facility.

The College of William and Mary is a public university located in Williamsburg, Va. Founded in 1693 by Royal Charter issued by King William III and Queen Mary II of England, William and Mary is the second oldest college in the country after Harvard. William and Mary has a long history of liberal arts education and a growing research and science curriculum that demonstrates a strong commitment to undergraduate research. The College, which became a state university in 1906, has been designated a “Public Ivy,” and for nine straight years has been ranked by U.S. News & World Report as the sixth-best public university in the country – and the nation’s top small public university. Also referred to as “the alma mater of a nation,” the College has educated four U.S. Presidents – George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe and John Tyler - the third-most of any college in the country. William and Mary also claims several firsts, including the 1776 creation of Phi Beta Kappa – the country’s first academic honor society – the first honor code of conduct for college students, and the first collegiate law school, established in 1779. William and Mary is also home to the Sir Christopher Wren Building – the country’s oldest academic building still in use – and the President’s House, the oldest home of a university president still in use.

All-Conference Honors in 2008-09
The College of William and Mary sponsors 23 varsity sports and provides students with a unique and successful balance of athletics and academics. The Tribe Athletics Department finished 117th nationally in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Standings for 2008-09, a number that ranked second among Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) programs and fourth in the state of Virginia. The Directors’ Cup, which was created by the NACDA and USA Today in 1993-94, is a program that honors institutions maintaining a broad-based program, achieving success in many sports, both men’s and women’s. W&M has placed among the top 100 nationally in 12 of the program’s 16 years, while leading the CAA on seven occasions. W&M has produced more CAA Championships than any program in the league’s history. The College owns 95 league crowns, nearly 40 more than its closest competitor. The Tribe raked in the awards in 2008-09 as well, tallying a combined 197 all-conference honors, 34 All-America honors and six league players of the year. During the 2008-09 season, the Green and Gold produced an overall athletics winning percentage of 68.2, while racking up a combined 888 wins. Along with its accomplishments on the field of play, the Tribe is just as successful in the classroom, epitomizing the term student-athlete. In the NCAA’s inaugural Academic Progress Report in 2005, W&M ranked fourth among Division I teams, which was the highest of any athletic scholarshipgranting school and of any public school. Since the inception of the CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year, W&M has produced 28 honorees, more than any school in the conference.
