TRIBE Traveling
with the
Tribe
Being part of the Tribe lacrosse program means having the opportunity to travel to exciting destinations around the country -- and the world. During the 2008 winter break, the team traveled to Australia for a 10-day visit. During the trip, W&M competed in four exhibition games against the Victoria club team during a six-day stay in Melbourne. The squad also spent four days in Sydney. Under NCAA Bylaws, a team may participate in a foreign tour once every four years, and the Tribe has already begun its fundraising drive for the 2012 international trip. The Tribe has also made a pair of trips to the San Francisco Bay area during the past three years, which has included games against Stanford and Cal-Berkley. While there, the team has enjoyed a scenic yacht cruise of San Francisco Bay, visited the famous Golden Gate Bridge, eaten dinner at the popular Fisherman’s Wharf of San Francisco and enjoyed free time in downtown San Francisco. A blog entry from the 2008 winter break trip to Australia can be found on the next page.

TRAVELS Below is an excerpt from a blog entry written by Jaime Sellers (’08) during the Tribe’s 10-day trip to Australia in 2008.
All tinges aside, I would consider myself a relatively well traveled 21-year-old, as I have spent a couple summers and vacations traveling. I have seen plenty of duomos, castles, statues, and museums. Yet nothing I have seen compares to the sight of the entire city of Sydney from atop the harbour bridge. As the first group to climb the bridge, we were, rightfully so, quite nervous. Some of the nerves were humorously resolved within 10 seconds of entering the lobby of the bridge climb company, as there happened to be a picture wall of celebrities who have also scaled the bridge’s dimensions (clearly, if they can do it, so can we). The remainder of the nerves subsided (relatively speaking) as we were introduced to our New Zealand native guide and proceeded to make our way through the practice course. Julia, Sara B., and I were accompanied by our parents and our coach, Meg, and trainer Tyler. I really couldn’t have asked for a better group to share the skyline with, as I continuously insisted that Julia, the climber behind me, pinch me just to make sure I was in fact, not dreaming. The sky was a radiant shade of blue, and the sun gleamed behind us as we climbed our way towards the top. 1,377 steps and numerous brow wipes later, our shaky legs carried us back to the starting point. As if touring the Sydney Opera House earlier in the day and then viewing the Sydney skyline weren’t enough, we then ate a farewell dinner together, and it only added to the day’s exquisite memories. Positioned on the water in Circle Quay staring out at the bridge lit for the evening eyes, we ate at quite possibly one of the finest restaurants I have been to in my 21 years. The service, food, and wine were all exquisite and the smiles and pictures flashes seemed to be endless. But better than any food we eat or wine we drink, is the company we, Tribe Lacrosse, keep. As I get older, I appreciate great friends and great people more and more, as it seems most people meet less and less of them. However, in my time with the Tribe, I have found that the opposite has happened. It is easy to lose track of the days as they seem to fly by, and it is easy to forget that not all teams have the understanding coaches and dedicated parents and support staff that we do. As a senior trying to absorb as much time with this team and these people as possible, I can only hope you know how grateful I am. I could not have asked for a better way to create incredible memories upon entering my last chapter with Tribe lacrosse.

A Legacy
of
Great Players
The William and Mary lacrosse program boasts a long tradition of producing outstanding players. Since 1982, W&M players have garnered 45 All-America selections and 78 all-conference honors. Additionally, 17 players from the College have been selected as a member of a U.S. National Team. In addition to the tremendous success achieved on the field, the bonds formed among the players extend long after graduation. Each fall, a number of alumnae return to the College for homecoming weekend. Among the weekend’s many festivities is the annual alumnae game. Dozens of alumni have competed in the event during the past few years to take on current members of the Tribe. A complete list of W&M players who have earned All-America, All-Conference and National Team honors can be found on p. 28 of the media guide.
In addition to recording victories at Duke and North Carolina, the 1996 Tribe squad posted a 5-1 CAA mark en route to earning an NCAA Tournament at-large bid.
With regular-season triumphs against Virginia and Johns Hopkins, the 2001 Tribe team earned an NCAA Tournament bid.
POSTSEASON HISTORY Throughout the past three decades, the William and Mary lacrosse program has established itself as one of the top teams in the region and earned a number of postseason berths. During a recent eight-year stretch, the Tribe garnered five NCAA Tournament bids. W&M has been on the verge of returning to the national tournament during each of the past two springs, as it has secured backto-back regular-season conference championships. Additionally, the Tribe ranked 20th in the final 2008 IWLCA poll, while the team garnered the same ranking at the conclusion of the ’09 regular season.

With nine starters returning from last season’s team that claimed the program’s second consecutive regular season conference title and ranked among the top 20 nationally, there is a tremendous amount of optimism and excitement surrounding the 2010 edition of the William and Mary lacrosse team. The Tribe’s talented roster includes an All-American, three all-region honorees and five all-conference selections from last spring. Joining the already impressive group will be a seven-member freshman class that will challenge the returnees for playing time and provide added depth to the lineup. Despite graduating six seniors last spring, this season’s squad boasts an abundance of veteran leadership and will be led by a trio of captains who will help guide the Tribe in its quest for a conference championship and an NCAA Tournament berth. A co-captain last season, junior goalkeeper Emily Geary will be joined by senior midfielder Mary Zulty and junior attacker Ashley Holofcener as leaders of this year’s team. All three players have distinguished themselves both on and off the field and will be instrumental in helping the Tribe achieve its goals.
Attack
After establishing itself as one of the most productive offensive teams in the nation last spring, the Tribe returns its top six scorers from the 2009 squad that set the program’s single-season record for goals (244) and points (347). Leading the unit will be an All-America candidate in Holofcener. En route to earning first-team All-CAA and second-team all-region distinction in ’09, she led the College with 64 points on 34 goals and 30 assists. The assist total ranked second on W&M’s singleseason list, while her point total ranked sixth. Holofcener enters the season ranked sixth on W&M’s career assist list (48) and is closing in on the top-10 career points list. Helping anchor the attack will be junior Maggie Anderson, who ranked second on the team with 37 goals and ninth in the conference with 2.18 goals per game. The impressive season followed up a terrific freshman campaign in which she started all 19 games and scored 35 goals. A dynamic player with strong leadership skills, Anderson worked hard during the offseason and should once again be an all-conference caliber player this spring. After closing out last season with six straight multigoal efforts and earning a spot on the CAA All-Tournament Team, senior Katie Rees will once again play a significant role on the offensive side. A savvy playmaker, both with and without the ball, she has the potential to earn postseason honors this spring. Three other players who should earn significant playing time will be senior Katie Delaney, sophomore Sally Roberts and freshman Kyrstin Mackrides. After earning five starts as a freshman, Delaney has been a key reserve for W&M during the past two seasons. She has embraced her roll as a senior leader and should continue vying for playing time after a strong fall. Roberts appeared in eight games as a reserve during her freshman season, contributing five goals, and has the opportunity to earn increased playing time as she continues to develop. A prep All-American at Villa Maria Academy, Mackrides has quickly adapted to the collegiate level and should challenge for immediate playing after posting an impressive fall.
2010 Senior Class Adding depth to the attack corps will be senior Kristin Anderson, sophomore Sam Bos and freshman Meredith Rutherford. Hampered by injuries for much of her career, Anderson saw action in three contests last spring and tallied her first-career goal in the victory at No. 17 Old Dominion, which helped W&M clinch it second straight regular-season league title. An exceptional finisher in the crease, Bos saw limited time in ’09 but is a talented player who continues to improve. A four-year letterwinner at Annandale School, Rutherford was a two-time Patriot League Player of the Year.
Midfield
In addition to having a number of talented players in the midfield, the position is perhaps the Tribe’s deepest. Leading the group will be a pair of all-conference performers in juniors Grace Golden and Molly Wannen, as well as Zulty. A two-time first-team All-CAA selection and a second-team all-region honoree in ’09, Golden led the team with 44 goals last season, a figure that ranked 10th on W&M’s single-season list. Additionally, the AllAmerica candidate ranked fifth in the league with 2.59 goals per game and eighth with 3.29 points per game. One of the nation’s fastest players, Golden is rapidly closing in on the program’s career top-10 lists for goals (89) and points (111). One of the team’s most-versatile athletes, Wannen garnered second-team All-CAA distinction last spring after leading the team with 40 draw controls, a figure that ranked fifth on W&M’s single-season list. After finishing ’09 with hat tricks in three of the final five contests, Wannen has continued to take her game to the next level during the offseason and has the opportunity to challenge for all-region and all-America honors in 2010. Chosen as a captain, Zulty bring a tremendous amount of experience to the field this season. The senior all-conference candidate has appeared in 50 games during her career at the College and ranked fourth on the squad with 39 points on 29 goals and 10 assists a season ago. Additionally, she ranked tied for fourth in the conference with three game-winning goals. Other returnees who figure to make a significant impact are senior Annie Macomber, junior Kaitlyn Gambrell, sophomore Stephanie Steinweg and sophomore Jenny Michael. A tenacious, aggressive and fast player, Macomber has served as a reserve during the past three seasons but could earn an increased roll this spring after improving tremendously during the offseason. A defensive-minded midfielder, Gambrell has appeared in 26 games during the past two seasons and is a smart
player who has a good feel for the game. After earning playing time in 10 games as a freshman in ’09, Steinweg is a reliable player who should earn an increased roll this spring. A draw specialist, Michael had a great fall and will be looking to see her first collegiate action after missing last year with a knee injury. Joining the midfield this season are a trio of freshmen who will add important depth to the position. Katie Stillwell has demonstrated significant promise and has the potential to make an immediate impact at both ends of the field. Brett Hayes will also compete for immediate playing time, as she possesses great speed and has quickly adapted to the collegiate level. A two-time US Lacrosse All-America honoree, Caitlin Murphy is an intense competitor who will also push the veterans and vie for minutes during her initial season.
Defense
Perhaps the Tribe’s strongest area this season will be the defense, as the unit is arguably the most athletic group in the program’s history. Led by All-American junior Sarah Jonson, the unit’s play will have a significant impact on the team’s success this year. Jonson became the program’s 45th All-America selection after leading the conference and ranking sixth nationally with 2.29 caused turnovers last year; her 39 caused turnovers equaled a school record. One of the nation’s top defensive players, she has continued to improve during the offseason and will once again contend for All-America honors. Helping anchor the defense will be talented sophomore Sarah Mulvey, who earned CAA All-Rookie honors in ’09 after starting all 19 games. One of the team’s smartest defenders as well as a great communicator, she should once again contend for postseason honors. After missing last season with a shoulder injury, junior Emma Starnes returns this spring and will be a significant figure in the Tribe’s lineup. Starnes made an immediate impact as a freshman in 2008, as she started all 19 contests and ranked fourth on the team with 30 ground balls. Having earned a year of experience at the collegiate level in ’09, sophomores Denise Lenihan and Lauren Canning both return as key reserves who should make a significant impact this season. Both players saw limited action as reserves last spring but posted impressive offseasons and fit well into the Tribe’s system. Adding depth to the defense will be sophomore Lauren Binzer and freshman Hannah Clarke. Binzer will be making the transition to defense after serving as the Tribe’s backup goalkeeper last season, while Clarke is one of the fastest players on W&M’s roster.
Goalkeepers
After starting both of her first two seasons at the College, Geary returns to the cage as one of the nation’s most experienced and talented goalkeepers. The twotime team captain ranked fifth nationally in ground balls last year (3.45 per game) after ranking fifth nationally in saves (193) as a freshman. A terrific athlete, she has continued to improve during the offseason and will be a strong candidate for postseason honors. Backing up in goal will be freshman Katie Geary, Emily’s sister. A three-year letterwinner at Radnor High School, she helped her team win back-to-back Pennsylvania State Championships in 2008 and 2009.

CHRISTINE HALFPENNY Head Coach
FOURTH SEASON VIRGINIA TECH, 1999 After leading the William and Mary lacrosse team to back-to-back regular-season conference titles in 2008 and 2009, Head Coach Christine Halfpenny enters her fourth year at the helm of the Tribe Lacrosse program. In just three seasons directing the Tribe, Halfpenny has quickly helped the program reestablish itself among the nation’s upper echelon. After ranking 20th in the final 2008 IWLCA poll, the team garnered the same ranking at the conclusion of the ’09 regular season. Additionally, W&M has posted an 11-3 conference mark during the past two seasons while defeating seven ranked teams – including a pair of top-10 opponents. In addition to the squad’s success, Halfpenny has helped a number of Tribe players earn individual accolades. During her first three seasons, W&M players have garnered 12 all-conference honors, five all-region selections and one All-America distinction. W&M student-athletes have also excelled in the classroom during Halfpenny’s tenure, as 17 players earned the CAA Commissioner’s Academic Award in 2008, bringing the College’s total to 43 during the last three years. Building upon the success of her first two campaigns, Halfpenny led the Tribe to its second consecutive regular-season CAA title in ’09 after equaling a school record with six conference victories. En route to securing the league’s No. 1 seed for the second straight year, W&M rattled off five consecutive conference wins – three of which came versus ranked teams – to close out the regular season. Along the way, the College established a program record with 244 goals and was just two assists shy of equaling the school record of 105 established in 1980. The individual accolades poured in as well following last season, as five players were chosen to all-conference teams – including first-team honorees Grace Golden and Ashley Holofcener. The duo also earned second-team all-region honors, while Sarah Jonson was a first-team allregion selection and was chosen as a third-team All-American by WomensLacrosse.com. Honored as the 2008 Colonial Athletic Association Coach of the Year, Halfpenny guided the College to a No. 1 seed in the conference tournament and a final national ranking of 20th during her second season at the helm of the Tribe. Also chosen as the 2008 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) University Division Coach of the Year, Halfpenny led W&M to victories in eight of its final 11 games and an appearance in the CAA championship game. Along the way, the Tribe registered four triumphs against ranked teams, including wins versus top-10 opponents Stanford and George Mason. Although much of the 2008 lineup was comprised of freshmen, Halfpenny helped a number of Tribe players earn individual accolades. Among the five all-conference selections were firstteam honorees Grace Golden and Jaime Sellers. Golden was also chosen as the CAA Rookie of the Year and the VaSID Rookie of the Year, while Sellers was named to the IWLCA All-South Region Second Team.
The Halfpenny Family: Matt, Cole, Jackson and Christine Halfpenny took over the Tribe program during the summer of 2006 after a successful threeyear stint as the top assistant at Duke University. During her first season in Williamsburg, Halfpenny began building the foundation for the success that would ensue in ’08. In addition to the memorable upset victory against ninth-ranked James Madison at Albert-Daly Field, Kristen Wong and Sellers earned all-conference honors. Wong was also selected to the IWLCA All-South Region Second Team and later earned a spot on the U.S. National Elite Team during the summer of 2007. Prior to coming to W&M, Halfpenny was part of a Duke staff that guided the Blue Devils to the 2005 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship and three-straight NCAA Tournament appearances, including national semifinal appearances in 2005 and 2006. While in Durham, Halfpenny’s duties included serving as the head recruiting coordinator, team academic coordinator, strength and conditioning liaison, travel coordinator and compliance coordinator. Halfpenny also served as the goalkeeper coach, mentoring current Tribe volunteer assistant Megan Huether to First Team All-America honors in 2005, the same year the standout netminder was named the IWLCA/US Lacrosse Goalie of the Year. In each of her three seasons at Duke, Halfpenny’s recruiting classes were ranked among the nation’s top four, according to Inside Lacrosse, and included the nation’s top class in 2005. She showed an equal commitment to work in the classroom, as the Blue Devils posted the nation’s top team GPA (3.46) in 2004 and the nation’s second-best team GPA (3.42) in 2005. Additionally, Halfpenny saw more than 50 Blue Devils named to the ACC Honor Roll between 2004 and 2005. Prior to her stint at Duke, Halfpenny was an assistant coach at her alma mater, Virginia Tech, during the 2002-03 academic year. In Blacksburg, Halfpenny served as the Hokies’ head recruiting coordinator, travel coordinator and offensive coordinator. Halfpenny began her collegiate coaching career at Brown University as an assistant during the 2001 and 2002 seasons. An active camp coach and counselor since 2000, Halfpenny directed the Duke Winter Lacrosse Camp in 2004-05 and has served as an assistant director at a variety of camps across the country. She is also an active member of both US Lacrosse and the IWLCA, serving on the coaches association growth committee in 2002-03. Under Halfpenny’s guidance, the College has hosted a number of clinics as well as a junior day event last spring. A 1999 graduate of Virginia Tech, Halfpenny was a four-year letterwinner in lacrosse and a starter on the 1999 Hokies team that captured the Atlantic 10 Championship. She received the team’s Coaches Award that year and was a member of the Athletic Directors Honor Roll in 1998 and 1999. After graduating from Virginia Tech, Halfpenny worked at Cave Spring High School in Roanoke, where she was the head coach of the boys and girls varsity swimming team and assistant varsity tennis coach. She guided the boys swim team to Valley District, Northwest Region and AAA State titles in 2000. A native of Latham, N.Y., Halfpenny and her husband, Matt, have two sons: Jackson, 4, and Cole, born on Jan. 9, 2009. Matt Halfpenny is the head men’s and women’s tennis coach at Norfolk State University.

After an incredibly successful first season at William and Mary, Ashley Coll returns for her second year on the Tribe coaching staff. During her first year at the College, Coll helped lead the squad to a program-record six conference victories en route to claiming the regular-season Colonial Athletic Associatiotn title. Additionally, the Tribe defeated three ranked teams and finished the regular season ranked 20th nationally. In addition to the team’s success, Coll helped a number of W&M players earn individual honors last season. Five players garnered all-conference accolades, while three were chosen to IWLCA All-South Region Team. Among the all-region selections was first-team selection Sarah Jonson, who also earned third-team All-America distinction by WomensLacrosse.com. While Coll is instrumental in all aspects of the W&M program, her primary responsibilities include coaching the defensive unit and working on individual skill development for the entire team. She also serves as the travel coordinator, oversees the strength and conditioning program and coordinates recruiting efforts. “I am thrilled with the addition of Ashley to our staff,” Halfpenny said at the time of Coll’s hiring. “I’m excited to have Ashley be a part of our program as she shares my vision of taking Tribe Lacrosse to new success and national prominence. It is a great honor to have the opportunity to work with Ashley once again. As a player she was hard working, dedicated and goal orientated. I am confident that those traits will carry over as she establishes herself as one of the nation’s top young assistants.” A four-year letterwinner at Duke University from 2002-06, Coll was a key contributor on the Blue Devils’ defensive unit. In addition to helping the program earn four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, the squad advanced to the Final Four during her final two seasons. Duke also claimed the Atlantic Coast Conference championship in 2005. During her final three seasons Coll was coached by Halfpenny, who was an assistant with the program from 2004-06. A member of one of the nation’s top defensive teams, Coll earned the squad’s Most Improved Player Award in 2004 and was selected to the ACC Honor Roll three times. She also served on the Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) and was Duke’s representative at ACC meetings. Prior to joining the Tribe staff, Coll was a graduate manager with the Ohio University women’s basketball team in 2007-08. Assistant Coach
Sarah Dalton enters her first season as an assistant coach with the Tribe after an outstanding collegiate career at Boston University. Although Dalton is instrumental in all aspects of the Tribe program, her primary responsibilities include working with the Tribe’s attack, as well as assisting with practice planning and individual skill instruction. Additionally, Dalton serves as the program’s travel coordinator and alumnae coordinator, while also assisting with administrative duties for camps and clinics. “I am excited to announce the addition of Sarah Dalton to our lacrosse staff and Tribe Lacrosse Family,” Halfpenny said at the time of her hiring. “After reviewing the candidates, it was clear that Sarah would be the best fit for our team in helping us win conference and national championships. She has played at a very high level, both with Boston University and the United States Developmental Team. Her enthusiasm and love for the sport of lacrosse are contagious, and I know this will translate to our entire team. The opportunity to welcome a new staff member with fresh ideas and a new perspective is great.” A four-year starter at BU from 2006-09, Dalton finished her career as the most decorated player in the program’s history. Recently selected to the U.S. Developmental Team for the second consecutive year, Dalton was a three-time Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) All-American, earning first-team honors each of the past two seasons. Additionally, she garnered first-team all-region distinction during her final three seasons and was a chosen as the America East Conference Player of the Year twice. MEGAN HUETHER Volunteer Asst. Coach
FOURTH SEASON DUKE, 2006 Megan Huether returns for her second season as a volunteer assistant coach after serving as a full-time assistant the previous two seasons. A former All-American goalkeeper at Duke University and a member of the 2009 World Cup Champion U.S. National Team, Huether has played an important role in the team’s recent success. En route to helping the Tribe capture back-to-back regular-season conference titles, W&M has posted an 11-3 league record during the past two seasons. Additionally, the 2009 squad equaled a program record with six regular-season conference victories. Huether has also helped the College reemerge at the national level, as the 2008 team ranked 20th in the final poll while last season’s team garnered the same ranking at the conclusion of the regular season. “Alma Mater of a Nation”
tate University”
The C ollege of Wi lli am & M ar y The College of William and Mary is a public university located in Williamsburg, Va. Founded in 1693 by Royal Charter issued by King William III and Queen Mary II of England, William and Mary is the second oldest college in the country after Harvard. William and Mary has a long history of liberal arts education and a growing research and science curriculum that demonstrates a strong commitment to undergraduate research. The College, which became a state university in 1906, has been designated a “Public Ivy,” and for nine straight years has been ranked by U.S. News & World Report as the sixthbest public university in the country – and the nation’s top small public university. Also referred to as “the alma mater of a nation,” the College has educated four U.S. Presidents – George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe and John Tyler, which is the third most of any college in the country. William and Mary also claims several firsts, including the 1776 creation of Phi Beta Kappa – the country’s first academic honor society – the first honor code of conduct for college students, and the first collegiate law school, established in 1779. William and Mary is also home to the Sir Christopher Wren Building – the country’s oldest academic building still in use – and the President’s House, the oldest Lake Matoaka Amphitheater home of a university president still in use.

All-Conference Honors in 2008-09
The College of William and Mary sponsors 23 varsity sports and provides students with a unique and successful balance of athletics and academics. The Tribe Athletics Department finished 117th nationally in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Standings for 2008-09, a number that ranked second among Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) programs and fourth in the state of Virginia. The Directors’ Cup, which was created by the NACDA and USA Today in 1993-94, is a program that honors institutions maintaining a broad-based program, achieving success in many sports, both men’s and women’s. W&M has placed among the top 100 nationally in 12 of the program’s 16 years, while leading the CAA on seven occasions. W&M has produced more CAA Championships than any program in the league’s history. The College owns 95 league crowns, nearly 40 more than its closest competitor. The Tribe raked in the awards in 2008-09 as well, tallying a combined 197 all-conference honors, 34 All-America honors and six league players of the year. During the 2008-09 season, the Green and Gold produced an overall athletics winning percentage of 68.2, while racking up a combined 888 wins. Along with its accomplishments on the field of play, the Tribe is just as successful in the classroom, epitomizing the term student-athlete. In the NCAA’s inaugural Academic Progress Report in 2005, W&M ranked fourth among Division I teams, which was the highest of any athletic scholarshipgranting school and of any public school. Since the inception of the CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year, W&M has produced 28 honorees, more than any school in the conference.
