After a solid 27-24 record in 2010, William and Mary Tribe head coach Frank Leoni enters his sixth season at the helm of the program in 2011 with aspirations of contending for a CAA Championship. With its entire starting lineup returning, as well as a stable of All-CAA-caliber pitchers, the Green and Gold have the makings of a special team this coming season.

The 2010 season saw the Tribe accomplish a great deal, highlighted by Leoni winning his 400th career game with a 10-9 win over Longwood on April 20, 2010. With the win, Leoni notched his 134th victory at William and Mary. Previously, Leoni won 266 games as the head coach at Rhode Island before leaving URI for William and Mary as the Rams all-time winningest coach. Also last season, Leoni was inducted into the Rhode Island Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. At the induction, Leoni was presented with the Ben Mondor Award, recognizing his lifetime service to Rhode Island baseball.

Pitching Coach

A former pitcher for head coach Frank Leoni at the University of Rhode Island, Jad Prachniak is in his sixth season as an assistant coach at William and Mary. Prachniak serves as the Tribeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pitching coach and assists with recruiting.

2011 TRIBE PITCHING STAFF

The William and Mary Tribe baseball team enters the 2011 season with lofty aspirations after posting a 27-24 record a year ago with one of the youngest teams in the CAA. Returning its entire starting line-up, as well as its best arms, the Tribe hopes to be in the hunt for its first conference title since 2001. The strength of the William and Mary Tribe in 2010 was its pitching and defense, which should continue once again in 2011. As a team, the College posted an ERA of 4.87, which ranked second in the CAA and 52nd nationally out of 292 teams. The 4.87 earned run average was the lowest for the College since 2004.

The staff was led by Matt Davenport, who posted one of the finest pitching seasons in program history, becoming the first Tribe hurler to earn All-CAA First-Team honors since 2002. Davenport set the school record with an ERA of 1.96 while pitching the 10th most innings in program history, 96.1. Also earning All-CAA recognition was John Farrell, whose six saves led the team and set a freshman school record. Defensively, the College posted a team fielding percentage of .969, tops in the CAA and the best for the Tribe since the 2007 season. At the plate, the Tribe was led by Stephen Arcure, who earned Second-Team All-CAA honors after leading the Green and Gold with a .339 batting average. Tadd Bower led the College a year ago in RBIs with 53 and home runs with 10 and will be counted on to provide some pop in the middle of W&M’s line-up again this season.

What are the goals for the 2011 season?

FL – “Our goals are the same every year: (1) make the CAA Tournament, (2) win the CAA championship and (3) make the NCAA tournament.”

The strength of the 2010 team was pitching and defense, do you feel that will continue this season? FL – “Teams that have strong pitching and defense are teams that have a real chance to win a championship. So, yes we expect that our team’s strength will be its pitching and defense.”

For the most part, the 2011 Tribe will be a young team, but also experienced, who can you envision having a breakout year this season?

FL – “I feel like our team is ready to have a breakout season. For our team to be effective, we will need contributions from everyone.”

Matt Davenport led three William and Mary players on the All-CAA squads in 2010, earning First-Team honors after leading the Tribe’s pitching staff. Stephen Arcure was named Second-Team All-CAA, while John Farrell was named to the CAA All-Rookie Team. Davenport became the first Tribe pitcher to earn first-team recognition since the 2002 season after posting an 8-2 record for the College. Arcure had a great season all-around, leading the Green and Gold with a .339 batting average while not committing an error all season defensively. Farrell was a revelation in the bullpen, saving a team-best six games, the most for a freshman in program history.

After a great freshman year that earned him CAA All-Rookie honors in 2009, Davenport was named First-Team All-CAA, First-Team ABCA/Rawlings AllEast Region, and Second-Team VaSID All-State in 2010. Davenport finished the season with an 8-2 mark, registering an ERA of 1.96, a William and Mary record. Davenport’s ERA was even more impressive considering his 96.1 innings pitched last season tied him for 10th at the College. Davenport also made the school’s top-10 lists for strikeouts and victories during his impressive 2010 campaign. Davenport is now tied for seventh all-time on the single-season list with his eight wins and is tied for eighth with his 88 strikeouts last year. In the CAA, Davenport ranked in the top-four in all major pitching categories. Davenport was tied for first in victories, second in ERA, and third in strikeouts with 88.

TRIBE CONTINUES TO DOMINATE AT PLUMERI PARK

Plumeri Park continued to be one of the hardest places for opponents to get a win in 2010, as the College posted a record of 24-7 (.774) at Plumeri Park. The 24 victories were the second-most in one season at the Park and the .774 winning percentage was also the second best all-time at Plumeri. Since its opening in 1999, the Green and gold has posted an overall record of 242-118 (.672) at Plumeri Park.

The William and Tribe baseball team has had its number of great players, with many of them continuing their careers long after their days playing for the Green and Gold are through.

WILL RHYMES

Rhymes broke into the Majors in 2010, hitting .304 in 54 games with the Detroit Tigers.

Since 1999, MLB teams have drafted 20 players out of the College. Seven picks have come in the first ten rounds, including Bill Bray with the 13th overall pick in 2004. Along with Bray, Will Rhymes plays for the Detroit Tigers, while Chris Ray won a World Series title with the San Fransisco Giants in 2010. Since Frank Leoni became Head Coach of the Tribe in 2006, there have been seven drafted players and nine total that have inked professional contracts. Included are two top ten round draft picks (Sexton and Sheridan) and three junioryear draft picks (Sheridan, Guez and Landry). By position, there have been four pitchers, three infielders, and two outfielders signed during Leoniâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tenure. Along with its major leaguers, W&M also has nine players working their way up in the minor leagues.

Coming off the celebration of its 25th Anniversary in 2009-10, the Colonial Athletic Association has built a reputation as one of the nation’s top collegiate conferences both athletically and academically. The CAA encompasses five of the nation’s nine largest metropolitan areas with a geographic footprint that stretches from Boston to Atlanta. The conference has produced 16 national team champions in five different sports, 33 individual national champions, 12 national players of the year, 12 national coaches of the year and 12 Honda Award winners. Just as impressive, however, are the honors accumulated away from competition, which include five Rhodes Scholars and 20 NCAA post-graduate scholars. In 2009-10, the CAA had more than 1,700 of the league’s 4,000 student-athletes received the Commissioner’s Academic Award after posting at least a 3.2 grade point average while lettering in a varsity sport. The conference had 28 teams in 15 different sports receive NCAA Public Recognition Awards based on the latest Academic Progress Report released in 2010. The landscape of the conference stretches along the majority of the East Coast, and includes six of the nation’s top 25 media markets – New York (1), Philadelphia (4), Boston (7), Atlanta (8), Washington, D.C. (9) and Baltimore (25). The number of television homes in the CAA market exceeds 20 million. The CAA currently sponsors 23 sports with the addition of a football league in 2007 and women’s rowing in 2009. Male athletes compete for championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field and wrestling. Female athletes battle for conference titles in basketball, cross country, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field and volleyball. Taylor Reveley was sworn in as the 27th president of the College of William and Mary on September 5, 2008, after serving as interim president since February 2008. Before assuming his current post, he served as dean of William & Mary Law School for almost a decade, starting in August 1998. He is the John Stewart Bryan Professor of Jurisprudence. Reveley received his A.B. from Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs in 1965. At Princeton, he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and rowed on the lightweight crew for two years. Reveley went to law school at the University of Virginia, receiving his J.D. in 1968. During the United States Supreme Court’s 1969 term, he clerked for Justice William J. Brennan, Jr.

Sandra Day O’Connor, who retired as Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court, was named twenty-third Chancellor of the College by the College of William and Mary Board of Visitors. Justice O’Connor’s appointment became effective at her April 2006 investiture; she succeeded Dr. Henry A. Kissinger, former United States Secretary of State, who was appointed in 2000. The post of Chancellor has been an important one since the College was chartered in 1693 by King William III and Queen Mary II of Great Britain. Until 1776, the Chancellor was an English subject – usually the Archbishop of Canterbury or the Bishop of London – who served as the College’s advocate to the crown, while a colonial president oversaw the day-to-day activities of the Williamsburg campus. Following the Revolutionary War, George Washington was appointed as the first American chancellor; later President John Tyler held the post. The first woman to serve on the United States Supreme Court, Justice O’Connor was born in El Paso, Texas, on March 26, 1930. She earned a B. A. in economics (magna cum laude) from Stanford University, and went on to receive an LL. B. from Stanford Law School, where she graduated third in her class. Her classmate, the late Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist, graduated first in the class.

The Tribe Athletics Department was 78th nationally (as of June 3) in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Standings for 2009-10, a number that topped the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) programs and ranked third in the state of Virginia. in June of 2008. This past summer, the Laycock Center renovated the foyer to include photos, information and memorablia on the Tribe’s storied football tradition. This past summer, the announcement of the first phase of the Martin Family Stadium to the current facilty at Albert-Daly Field was made. The new stadium features a 1,000-seat pavilion, which features a state-of-the-art press box, filming positions and restroom facilities. The

project will begin in the fall of 2010 and be complete in 2011. In the summer of 2009, Busch Field experienced a renovation that included a total revamp of the field, underlying pad, water cannon and drainage system. The renovation created a competition surface that ranks alongside those used at the U.S. National Training Centers in Virginia Beach, Va., Chula Vista, Calif., and

that used at last year’s Olympic Games. In 2005, Kaplan Arena received an upgrade with the installation of 6,900-square foot permanent wood floor along with rubberized sports flooring on the open end of the arena to accomodate track and field and other multipurpose activities.

Under the steady guidance and watchful eye of Terry Driscoll, the William and Mary Athletics Department has solidified its standing as one of the nation’s preeminent broad-based programs. As Driscoll enters his 15th year as athletics director, he has overseen an unprecedented era of improvement in terms of funding and facilities while also maintaining the College’s rich history of producing well-rounded student-athletes. Driscoll oversees a program that is committed to balancing academic demands with athletic success. One of the department’s stated goals each year is to finish among the top 100 in the annual Director’s Cup rankings, which has happened in all but one of the years that Driscoll has been the director. In the last seven years, the Tribe’s program has combined for a total of 29 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) titles. This past season, W&M claimed three CAA titles (Men’s and Women’s Cross Country and Women’s Track & Field). In 2002-03, W&M had a school-record 10 teams compete in the NCAA Tournament, with four teams winning conference titles and six that finished in the top 25 at the end of their respective seasons. Overall, no institution in the CAA can claim more alltime league championships than the 98 William and Mary has earned.

• In the Summer of 2010, the committment of a significant gift to fully fund the addition of MARTIN FAMILY STADIUM to Albert-Daly Field, the home of Tribe soccer and lacrosse. Established in 1948 to create support for William and Mary Athletics, the Tribe Club is made up of alumni and friends of the College’s athletics programs. Due to the fact that W&M receives no aid from the state for its sports programs, the Tribe Club is the sole provider of scholarships for William and Mary’s student-athletes. Additionally, money raised annually by the Tribe Club helps defray a portion of the operating expenses for program support.

As Director of Academic Support, Jason Simms acts as an academic advisor to the College’s varsity athletes and is currently in his third year at W&M. Simms assists student-athletes in maintaining excellence in the classroom, scheduling classes, and assisting in future planning. Simms brought a diverse background to the W&M Athletic Department from his work at Salisbury University. He acted as the Associate Dean of Admissions as well as the Director of Minority Recruitment. In regards to athletics, Simms worked as the Admissions Athletics Liaison and an Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach for the SU Sea Gulls.

Pamela Mason took over full time duties of the College’s compliance office on April 1, 2006, and she was promoted to Assistant AD for Compliance and Educational Services in July 2008. Previously, she served as the Associate Director of Development for two years. She is W&M’s Senior Women’s Administrator. Under Mason, the compliance office works with the NCAA Eligibility Center to determine initial eligibility of all incoming freshmen and continues to monitor student-athlete eligibility throughout their college careers. Mason is also responsible for educating all student-athletes, coaches, staff and boosters on the NCAA rules.

ACADEMIC ADVISING PHILOSOPHY Sound academic advice can make the crucial difference between a coherent and exciting education that satisfies personal and professional goals and one that is fragmented and frustrating. Academic advising is recognized at the College as important to the development of its students, a natural extension of teaching and an important professional obligation on the part of its faculty.

Along with hard-work and dedication both on the field and in the classroom, the William and Mary Athletic Department and its student-athletes also strive to make a positive impact in the community. In 2010, various Tribe athletic programs donated their time and energy in different capacities throughout Williamsburg and the Hampton Roads area. Among the dozens of activities, Tribe teams read at local schools, volunteered at youth camps, doing community-based service projects and collected food, clothing and money for non-profit organizations.

Tribe baseball reached out into the community this past year participated in Fitness Night at The Arc of Greater Williamsburg. Tribe student-athletes helped 40 members of The Arc engage in exercises and baseball activities for two hours and talked about the importance of exercise and developing healthy eating habits.

Among the leaders in the Tribe’s efforts in the community is the Student Athletic Advisory Council (SAAC). The SAAC’s goal is to provide a communications link between student athletes and the athletic administration, while promoting and supporting the athletic department, college and local community. The Council is composed of two representatives from each varsity team and the cheerleading team. Selected athletic administrators are non-voting members of the Council.

The Division of Sports Medicine at the College of William and Mary is responsible for the health care of nearly 450 student-athletes in 23 intercollegiate sports at the country’s second-oldest institution of higher learning. The athletic training program focuses on the prevention, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries for all intercollegiate student-athletes. Tribe athletes have the luxury of rehabilitating and treating injuries in a state-of-the-art athletic training facility. There are eight full-time certified athletic trainers and two graduate assistants from Old Dominion University’s post-graduate athletic training educational program on staff. In addition, a group of undergraduate students serve as athletic training aides and assist in the daily operation of the sports medicine program. W&M Student-Athletes work with an online meal planning for balanced nutrition through Sports Medicine as well.

Renée Cork heads the William and Mary Sports Medicine staff and holds the title of Assistant Athletic Director for Heath Services. Cork is in her 19th year at the College and in 2007 was honored as the National Trainers’ Association Assistant Athletic Trainer of the Year. Cork is joined on the sports medicine staff by a pair of veteran trainers in Senior Associate Athletic Trainer Andy Carter and Associate Athletic Trainer John Knaul. Carter joined the William and Mary staff in 2000 as an associate athletic trainer. A William and Mary alumnus and former Tribe student athletic trainer, he is in his seveth year as the head football athletic trainer, overseeing the sports medicine services for the team. He and his wife, Kristina, who is a physical therapist at Advanced Specialty Center of Williamsburg Physical Therapy, reside in Williamsburg. Lisa Shook and Michele Heisel enter their sixth seasons with W&M athletics and both hold the title of Senior Assistant Athletic Trainers. Shook holds a bachelor’s degree from Salisbury University and a master’s from Western Carolina. She is the head athletic trainer for the men’s basketball program. Heisel, who resides in Williamsburg with her husband, Ian, who is an assistant strength and conditioning coach at the College, holds a bachelor’s degree from California University of Pennsylvania and a master’s from Virginia. degree from Northern Iowa, while receiving his master’s degree from West Virginia. Shawn Lucci joins the staff full time after spending the last two years as a graduate assistant. She earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Pittsburgh and received her master’s from Old Dominion this past year. Michael Potter is in his seventh year on the staff as the team physician. The team physician oversees the full-time athletic training staff and has overall responsibility for supervising the sports medicine program. A family practice/sports medicine specialist, Potter earned his medical degree from Texas A&M. He completed his residency at the Riverside Family Practice in Newport News and his sports medicine fellowship at Wake Forest University. Some of the most popular destinations include Busch Gardens and Water Country - two of the most impressive theme parks on the east coast - and both are less than a 10-minute drive from the W&M campus. Another of Williamsburgâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most popular areas is New Town, which is a vibrant 365-acre community with more than 170 shops and restaurants.
