PUPPIES! Behind Shaq Walters’ career-high 20 points, Northeastern overcame a 19-point deficit to claim an 81-78 overtime win at Hofstra. Northeastern is now 3-0 in CAA play for the first time since 2016-17. The Huskies do not have a senior on their roster, ranking 319th out of 343 active teams in terms of experience, per KenPom.com. YOUTH IS SERVED The first weekend of CAA play saw the emergence of underclassmen across the conference. On Tuesday, James Madison’s Justin Amadi recorded a career-best 17 points as the Dukes won a non-conference tilt against FAU. In Boston, sophomore Tyson Walker and freshman Jahmyl Telfort led Northeastern to an opening sweep, combining for 46.1% of the team’s points in a pair of wins. Up on Long Island, sophomore Caleb Burgess posted career highs with 15 points and 8 assists against William & Mary. Down I-95 in Newark, freshmen Gianmarco Arletti and Andrew Carr each posted career highs with 21 and 15 points, respectively, in the Blue Hens’ Jan. 2 victory. FOR OPENERS Both Hofstra and Northeastern opened CAA play 2-0, which should not come as a surprise. For the Pride, it was the program’s third consecutive season opening 2-0, while Northeastern is 2-0 for the second straight year and sixth time since 2005-06. The matchups this week are a meeting of the programs that have met in the CAA championship game each of the last two years, with Hofstra earning the CAA title in 2020 and Northeastern in 2019.
