TRIBE NEWS & NOTES - W&M and American are former Colonial Athletic Association rivals and founding members of the league. The Tribe and Eagles meet for the second time in three years after not having met since AU left the CAA in 2001. American leads the all-time series at 34-12, but the Tribe has won three of the last four meetings. In 2019, the Tribe rallied from a 16-point deficit to win at American, 79-70. - In the opener at Wake Forest, the Tribe dished out 17 assists on 22 made field goals. According to KenPom.com, the Tribe’s 77.3% assist rate ranks fourth in the country.

- Sophomore Ben Wight enjoyed a career night in the Tribe’s first game of the season at Wake Forest.

- Freshman Tyler Rice had an impressive debut at Wake Forest. Rice dished out nine assists which are the most for a Tribe freshman in a debut in program history. He had seven assists compared to zero turnovers in the second half against the Deacs. Overall, his nine assists were the second most for a Tribe freshman in school history, trailing only Randy Bracy’s 11 in 1996 against George Mason.

Wake Forest shot 61% from the field and jumped out to a 46-18 half-time lead. Ben Wight led the Tribe with a career-high 18 points, while Tyler Rice dished out nine assists. The former CAA rivals meets for the second time in the last three years. W&M has won the last two meetings, including a 79-70 win in D.C. in 2019. The Eagles travel to Williamsburg for the frist time since 2001. W&M and Norfolk State meet for just the third time. The Tribe won the first two meetings, both in Williamsburg in 1982 and 2008. W&M travels to Norfolk to take on the Spartans for the first time. The Tribe and Panthers are former CAA rivals as the GSU played in the league in from 2006-13. W&M leads the all-time series at 8-6. The Panthers advanced to the Sun Belt title game in 2021. As part of the Legend’s Classic, the Tribe will face either High Point or Howard in the second game. Mary Baldwin is a first-year DIII program that plays in the USA South Athletic Conference. The Tribe and Navy were both orginal members of the CAA before the Mids left in 1991. The teams will meet for the first time since a wild 3OT game in 2008 in Williamsburg. W&M has won 11 of the last 13 games with Davidson, but the two teams have not met since 2000. The Wildcats won the last meeting in Albuquerque, N.M., in 2000. W&M travels to Davidson for the first time since 1990. The teams meet for the 49th-straight season dating back to 1974. While ODU leads the all-time series, W&M has won seven of the last 10 meetings. Last season, the Monarchs opened the year with an 86-78 win in Norfolk. W&M and HU meet for the 24th time in the last 27 seasons with the Tribe holding an 15-8 advantage in the series. W&M has won four straight against the Pirates, including a 75-58 win in Hampton last season. W&M and Fairfield meet for the second time in three years. The Tribe has won the last two games in the series that is even at two. In 2019, W&M topped FU, 62-58, in Connecticut. The match-up marks the first meeting between the two teams and W&M’s first against the Missouri Valley Conference since it traveled to Wichita State in 2013. The Huskies won the only meeting between the teams in the CAA Quarterfinals last season. The Tribe is 10-3 in Williamsburg vs. Northeastern. UNCW leads the all-time series at 45-32, but the Tribe has won 13 of the last 18 meetings between the programs. Quinn Blair led W&M with 13 points and eight rebounds in the win last season, while Ben Wight had a career-high 10 points. Drexel leads the series at 14-8 in Philadelphia, but the Tribe has won six of the last nine meetings on the road, including a split last season. The Seahawks hold a 23-14 advantage over the Tribe in Wilmington, but the teams have split the last eight meeting in North Carolina. Connor Kochera scored 17 against the Seahawks in the lone meeting last season. The Tribe leads the all-time series with Towson at 24-19 and has won six of the last seven in the series. Connor Kochera averaged 26.5 points and 7.5 rebounds in two games against TU last season. Elon visits Florida (8 p.m., SECN+) looking to open its challenging non-conference slate by knocking off a high-profile opponent. Drexel will celebrate its 2021 CAA title with its fans in Philadelphia as the Dragons are the one conference team with a home game Tuesday. Northeastern, Towson, Delaware, and UNCW will hit the road for their openers.

MEET THE NEW BOSS Two CAA head coaches will make their debuts this week with the first being Hofstra’s Speedy Claxton on Tuesday night at No. 15 Houston. Claxton will make his first appearance as head coach of his alma mater against a nationally ranked opponent.
