Tribe Football 2010 CAA Champions Continued Success
After a memorable run to the NCAA Semifinals in 2009, last year’s edition of the Tribe reached the NCAA Playoffs for the second consecutive season - this time as the No. 2 seed. En route to earning its second-consecutive postseason bid, W&M garnered the program’s first-ever No. 1 national ranking during the middle of the season and claimed the Colonial Athletic Association title with the 41-3 victory against Richmond in the regular-season finale. Although the Tribe fell to Georgia Southern in the second round of the playoffs, W&M still secured a season-ending top-10 national ranking for the second straight year.
Postseason Honors
In addition to the team’s success, a number of Tribe players were honored individually for their outstanding play during the 2010 campaign. Highlighting the list of honorees was a trio of All-America selections, as punter David Miller, tight end Alex Gottlieb and left tackle Keith Hill, Jr., all earned national accolades. Miller garnered All-America distinction from the Associated Press, The Sports Network, American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and Phil Steele, while Gottlieb and Hill were recognized by The Sports Network. Additionally, W&M equaled the program’s single-season record for all-conference honorees, as 12 Tribe players earned 15 all-league awards. Highlighting the College’s six first-team All-CAA selections was running back Jonathan Grimes, who was also honored as the Special Teams Player of the Year. Head Coach Jimmye Laycock was also recognized for the Tribe’s success, as he was selected as the AFCA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Region 1 Coach of the Year. It marked the second time Laycock has earned the honor.
Welcome Back!
While the ‘10 season provided a number of highlights, the upcoming 2011 campaign has the opportunity to be just as exciting with the return of 15 starters - eight on offense and seven on defense. On the offensive side of the ball, eight-time All-CAA honoree tailback Jonathan Grimes will enter his senior year as one of the nation’s premier players. Grimes has been the team’s workhorse for the past three seasons, as he has amassed 3,110 career rushing yards (on 648 attempts, an average of 4.8 per carry) and a school-record 5,445 total yards (and average of 147.2 yds/game for his career). The Tribe will have plenty of other weapons to pair with Grimes, as All-American tight end Alex Gottlieb (34 catches for 350 yards and 3 TDs in ‘10) returns, as does All-CAA wideout Ryan Moody (47 catches, 731 yards, 2 TDs) and all-conference center James Pagliaro. While the Tribe graduated its leading passer from 2010 (Mike Callahan ), Michael Paulus will return for his senior season after throwing for 883 yards and four TDs a year ago. Adding to the excitement for the Tribe faithful will be the return of 2009 All-CAA linebacker, Jake Trantin, who will come back to the middle of the defense after missing the 2010 season. Trantin will team with a trio of returning 2010 All-CAA selections in linebacker Dante Cook (111 TT, 9 TFLs, 2 TDs), defensive end Marcus Hyde (63 TT, 12.5 TFLs) and cornerback B.W. Webb (42 TT, nine career INTs).
linebackers coach, a position he has filled since the 2007 season. In that role, he has mentored two different players to all-conference honors (Dante Cook to second-team accolades in 2010 and Jake Trantin , who was a second-team selection in 2009). He will take over a defensive unit that has ranked among the league’s finest in the last three seasons and returns seven total players with starting experience. McDonald joins the Tribe staff after serving as the secondary coach at Indiana University of Pennsylvania for the past five seasons. During his tenure with the Crimson Hawks, McDonald worked under head coach Lou Tepper and mentored a pair of All-Americans and five all-conference performers. Highlighting those standouts was Akwasi Owusu-Ansah, a fourth-round draft pick by the Dallas Cowboys last spring. In addition to his coaching duties with the defense, McDonald also served as IUP’s recruiting coordinator.
Home Field Advantage
W&M has experienced tremendous success at Zable Stadium recently and posted its second-consecutive undefeated regular season home record in 2010. Although W&M had its 11-game home winning streak snapped against Georgia Southern in the second round of the NCAA Playoffs, it still marked the program’s longest home unbeaten streak since a 12-game stretch from 1995-97. Many of the Tribe faithful witnessed the team’s success firsthand, as W&M established a modern day single-season school record for attendance by averaging 10,782 fans per game.
Success in the Commonwealth
W&M has fared well against teams from the state of Virginia during the past two seasons and owns an impressive 6-2 record during the span. Highlighting the recent victories was a 26-14 win at Virginia in the 2009 season opener. The win was the first of 11 for the Tribe that fall, as the squad advanced to the NCAA Semifinals and finished the season with a No. 3 national ranking. W&M will once again open its season at Virginia this fall when it squares off against the Cavaliers on Sept. 3 in Charlottesville. It will be the first of five in-state opponents for the Tribe in 2011 (Virginia - 9/3; VMI - 9/10; James Madison - 9/24; Old Dominion - 11/12; Richmond - 11/19).
Tribe Completes Coaching Staff for 2011 Season 2
William and Mary Head Football Coach Jimmye Laycock announced this spring the promotion of Scott Boone to the position of defensive coordinator and the hiring of D.K. McDonald , Jr., as defensive backs coach for the upcoming 2011 season. While the position is his first as a coordinator, Boone, who is entering his eighth year on the Tribe staff, has more than 25 years of coaching experience, including a seven-year stretch as a head coach at Randolph-Macon College (Va.). Boone, who replaces Bob Shoop in the coordinator role, will remain the squad’s
William and Mary hoisted the Capital Cup after defeating Richmond, 41-3, in the 2010 regular season finale. With the victory, W&M claimed the Colonial Athletic Association title and the league’s automatic playoff bid.

Few schools feature a better match at the helm of its program than the College of William and Mary has with Jimmye Laycock. In a tenure that now reaches its third decade, Laycock has worked hand-in-hand with the College’s worldclass academic tradition and fashioned a program that is a point of pride for the campus, alumni and community. Laycock is one of the nation’s longest tenured and most respected head coaches. He has authored a school-record 208 wins (against 145 losses and two ties) and 21 winning ledgers since first taking over the program in 1980. The Tribe has also appeared in 13 postseason contests with Laycock at the helm and advanced to the NCAA Semifinals twice in the last seven years. On June 21, 2008, the College dedicated the $11 million Jimmye Laycock Football Center with a ceremony that featured more than 500 friends and alumni of the program. While the building carries his name and stands as a strong symbol of what Laycock has meant to the Tribe, it makes a stronger statement about the school’s commitment to football and the program’s proud tradition. The state-of-the-art center provides the College with one of the finest facilities in the Football Championship Subdivision and, paired with Laycock’s steady leadership, gives the Tribe the necessary resources to compete at the highest level. As the architect of what is easily the most extended run of success in William and Mary’s 116-year football history, Laycock has never compromised academic standards for athletic success, as his program earned recognition from the NCAA in each of the first seven seasons the organization has awarded outstanding academic achievement. When Laycock, a 1970 grad, returned to coach his alma mater prior to the 1980 season, he inherited a program that had won six or more games in a season just four times in the previous 25 years. Few could have predicted that the College would produce four times that amount of seven-win seasons over the next 30 seasons. The accumulated successes, both on and off the field, have led to an era of unprecedented interest and support for his program. Evidence of this is provided in the fact the Tribe averaged more than 10,000 fans per game during the last five seasons. During Laycock’s tenure, the fans at Zable have consistently been treated to a winner on the field, as the program’s mentor ranks in the top 10 of all active FCS head coaches in terms of career wins. Laycock is also second among active conference head coaches in career league wins with 88. Individual accomplishments under Laycock have been plentiful, as he has also tutored 36 players to 92 All-America honors from the William and Mary ranks and has coached 11 Academic AllAmericans. Former quarterback Lang Campbell is
the most decorated of all, as the 2004 season saw him earn the prestigious Payton Award, given annually to the nation’s top offensive player in the FCS ranks, consensus first team AllAmerica honors, as well as the A-10’s Offensive Player of the Year and Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The Tribe has produced an astounding 176 all-conference selections since 1993. While Laycock has led the Tribe to tremendous success throughout his 31 seasons at the helm of W&M football, the past two seasons have provided fans with plenty of excitement. The 2010 squad advanced to the NCAA Playoffs for the second consecutive season, earning the No. 2 seed, and acheived a national ranking of No. 1 midway through the fall. In 2009, the Tribe equaled a school record with 11 victories and advanced to the NCAA Semifinals for the second time in six seasons. En route to being ranked as high as third nationally in the final polls, the College led the nation in rushing defense by surrendering just 61.14 yards per game – a school record. Additionally, W&M ranked second nationally in total defense (229.79) and scoring defense (12.07), while it ranked third in sacks (3.43) and eighth in tackles for a loss (8.00). Laycock also became part of the exclusive 200-win club as he became just the 13 FCS head coach to reach the milestone with the NCAA Quarterfinal victory at top-ranked Southern Illinois. Laycock is married to Deidre Connelly, a sports psychology consultant at the College. They have three children: Michael, Mimi and James. Laycock’s daughter Melanie is married to Doug Johnson and is a high school administrator in the Atlanta Area.

AMHERST, Mass. (9/4/10) -- The fourth-ranked Tribe fell at conference foe Massachusetts, 27-23, in both teams’ season opener in Amherst, Mass. Trailing 23-14 in the fourth quarter, UMass put together a pair of touchdown drives in the final 10 minutes to rally back for the victory. The outcome snapped the Tribe’s 14-game winning streak against unranked FCS opponents. UMass utilized a balanced attack, totaling 215 rushing yards and 223 passing yards, en route to outgaining the College, 438-334. The effort snapped a 15-game streak in which W&M had outgained the opposition. Making his first collegiate start, quarterback Mike Callahan completed 21-of-35 passes for 221 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. The Mountville, Pa., native also rushed for 39 yards and found the end zone on a 28-yard scamper. After forcing a punt on UMass’ initial possession, the Tribe got on the scoreboard first when Callahan connected with senior fullback Jimmy Hobson on a 5-yard touchdown pass with 4:53 remaining in the first quarter. Callahan completed all five of his pass attempts on the 12-play, 50-yard drive that took 6:09. While the Minutemen later evened the score early in the second quarter on a 36-yard touchdown strike from Kyle Havens to Anthony Nelson, W&M responded with a 28-yard touchdown run by Callahan on a fourth-and-eight situation. A 4-yard touchdown run by John Griffin with 1:36 remaining in the half briefly gave UMass the lead, but David Miller capped off an 11-play, 79 yard drive with a 17-yard field goal as the first half clcok expired. Neither team put any points on the board in the third quarter, but a 34-yard touchdown strike from Callahan to wideout Cameron Dohse put the Tribe ahead, 23-14, early in the fourth. However, touchdown runs by Jon Hernandez and Griffin in the final 10 minutes put the Minutemen ahead for good, as W&M’s final drive ended with an interception by linebacker Tyler Holmes off a pass Jonathan Grimes was unable to handle.
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (9/11/10) -- The No. 11/14 Tribe extended its winning streak against VMI to 24 games with a 45-0 victory in its 2010 home opener at Zable Stadium. In addition to winning its seventh consecutive home game, the Tribe posted its third shutout in its last four games played at Zable Stadium. Additionally, W&M pushed its winning streak against non-conference FCS opponents to 18 games. The College outgained VMI, 391-239, and allowed the Keydets inside the red zone just once. Additionally, W&M limited VMI to just 1-of-19 on third and fourth down situations. W&M’s defensive unit also registered five interceptions – the most by a Tribe team since equaling the feat against Penn in 1995. Sophomore safety Brian Thompson led the individual efforts with a pair of interceptions and a TFL, while junior defensive end Marcus Hyde totaled a team-high nine tackles with a sack and a pair of TFLs. Despite playing just two and a half quarters, senior quarterback Mike Callahan posted some impressive numbers, completing 12-of-17 passes for 234 yards and a touchdown. Junior running back Jonathan Grimes, a 2010 Payton Award candidate, rushed for 71 yards and scored three touchdowns as he moved into the program’s all-time top-10 list for rushing touchdowns (19). Sophomore wideout Ryan Moody led the receiving corps with four catches for 110 yards, all of which he recorded in the first half. The Tribe piled up a 31-0 lead by halftime, as it dominated all areas of the game. A 64-yard punt return for a touchdown by B.W. Webb put W&M on the scoreboard first, while Grimes rushed for a pair of scores and Chase Hill snared a 23-yard touchdown catch. Miller also added a 30-yard field goal in the opening 30 minutes of play. Grimes found the end zone for the third time of the night late in the third quarter, while redshirt freshman Jerome Couplin returned an interception 22 yards for a touchdown midway through the fourth quarter.

NORFOLK, Va. (9/18/10) -- Senior quarterback Mike Callahan connected with senior tight end Gareth Hissong on a 4-yard go-ahead touchdown pass with 4:45 remaining to help lift the No. 12/13 William and Mary football team to a 21-17 victory at Old Dominion on Saturday night. The reception was the first of Hissong’s career and gave the Tribe its 19th consecutive victory against a non-conference FCS opponent. After trailing 14-7 at halftime, the Tribe (2-1, 0-1) outgained Old Dominion (1-2) by more than a 100 yards of total offense in the second half (225-123) en route to claiming victory in the teams’ initial meeting. Payton Award candidate running back Jonathan Grimes rushed for a game-high 124 yards and a touchdown, while Callahan completed 21-of-31 passes for 290 yards and a pair of scores. ODU provided the game’s first score when quarterback Thomas DeMarco found Kai Blanco on a 4-yard touchdown strike with 5:40 remaining in the opening quarter. W&M missed a pair of field goal attempts before a 30-yard touchdown run down the Tribe sideline evened the score at 7-7 with 6:23 remaining in the second quarter. Old Dominion answered with a touchdown on its next drive when Colby Goodwyn scored on a 41-yard scamper with 3:06 remaining in the opening half. W&M wasted little time getting on the scoreboard in the second half, as Callahan connected with senior wide receiver Chase Hill on a 55-yard touchdown strike on the opening play from scrimmage to knot the score at 14-14 just 22 seconds into the third quarter. Two other scoring chances came up short when fullback Jimmy Hobson fumbled at the goal line and ODU recovered the ball in the end zone, while Miller missed a 46-yard field goal attempt. A 20-yard field goal by Jarod Brown with 9:38 remaining gave the Monarchs a 17-14 advantage. The College then responded with an 8-play, 65-yard drive that culminated with Callahan’s goahead 4-yard touchdown pass to Hissong with 4:45 remaining. The scoring drive was aided by a pair of 15-yard penalties on ODU. ODU later failed to convert a fourth-and-4 from W&M’s 38, while a interception near midfield with 5 seconds remaining sealed the Tribe victory. ORONO, Maine (9/25/10) -- Junior quarterback Michael Paulus connected with senior wide receiver Chase Hill on a 21-yard touchdown pass with 20 seconds remaining to help the eighth-ranked William and Mary football team earn a thrilling 24-21 victory at Maine. Trailing 14-3 midway through the fourth quarter, the Tribe scored 21 points in the final 7:09. With 10 minutes remaining, Paulus entered the game as a reserve and engineered a 10-play, 76-yard drive that ended with a 10-yard touchdown run by senior Courtland Marriner. W&M took its first lead of the contest on the second play of Maine’s ensuing drive when sophomore linebacker Dante Cook intercepted quarterback Warren Smith at midfield and raced 50 yards down the Black Bears’ sideline and into the end zone with 6:46 remaining. After recovering a W&M muffed punt at W&M’s 20-yard line with 4:40 on the clock, Maine retook the lead, 21-17, on 3-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Warren Smith to Desmon Randall with 2:46 remaining. Paulus then led the College down the field on the game-winning drive, as he completed 5-of-8 passes for 59 yards, while rushing for 13 more. After being outgained by 158 yards during the first three quarters, the Tribe outgained Maine, 135-62, in the final 15 minutes. With the win, W&M extended its winnings streak to three games and has won 15 of its last 16 games against non-ranked FCS teams. Although Maine outgained the Tribe, 365-280, and controlled the time of possession by more than 10 minutes (35:04-24:56), the Black Bears were whistled for 11 penalties for 134 yards. Paulus completed 9-of-16 passes for 104 yards in the fourth quarter, while Hill finished the game with four catches for 67 yards. In addition to his electric fourth quarter pick-six, Cook totaled a game-high 12 tackles. Sophomore safety Brian Thompson also totaled 12 stops, while senior linebacker Evan Francks recorded 11. WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (10/2/10) -- After jumping out to a 21-0 lead midway through the second quarter, the seventh-ranked Tribe held off top-ranked Villanova’s second half comeback bid to earn a 31-24 victory in front of a sold-out Zable Stadium. The victory was W&M’s third win against the nation’s top-ranked team since 2005 (New Hampshire in 2005 and Southern Illinois in 2009). The triumph also extended the Tribe’s home game winning streak to eight games. Walter Payton Award Watch List honoree Jonathan Grimes recorded his second threetouchdown performance of the season while totaling a game-high 83 rushing yards. W&M got on the scoreboard first when Grimes capped off a 13-play, 86-yard drive with an 8-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter. The Tribe pushed the lead to 14-0 early in the second quarter on a 4-yard scamper by Grimes. The touchdown was set up on the preceding play when Paulus connected with Moody for a 36-yard completion deep down the middle. Facing a fourth-and-2 from the Tribe’s 17-yard line, Villanova (3-2, 1-1) quarterback Chris Whitney lofted a short pass to the right side that Cook intercepted and returned 84-yards down the Tribe sideline for a touchdown with 5:03 left in the second quarter. Villanova put its first points on the board when placekicker Nick Yako kicked a 26-yard field goal with 7 seconds remaining in the half. Grimes third touchdown of the day, a 6-yard run with 7:13 showing in the third quarter, gave the College its biggest lead at 28-3. W&M later answered Villanova’s first touchdown, a 3-yard run by Whitney, with a 42-yard field goal by Drake Kuhn. Villanova responded with a 4-yard touchdown run by Whitney, and Norman White made a leaping 47-yard touchdown catch (on a fourth-and-28) with 2:10 remaining. However, Grimes came up with the ensuing onside kick, and W&M was able to pick up a first down and run out the clock. WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (10/9/10) -- The No. 4/5 William and Mary football team extended its winning streak to five games with a 26-7 victory against Rhode Island at Zable Stadium. In addition to allowing just one score, the Tribe outgained the Rams, 370-233, and forced three turnovers en route to securing its ninth consecutive win at home. Payton Award candidate junior running back Jonathan Grimes became the program’s career record holder for all-purpose yards (4,658) with a 163 output against the Rams. The Tribe took a 3-0 lead when redshirt freshman placekicker Drake Kuhn capped off a 9-play, 59-yard drive with a 37-yard field goal from the left hash early in the second quarter. Grimes keyed the drive with 24 yards on three carries. After holding URI to a three-and-out on its next possession, the Tribe took a 10-0 lead when Paulus connected with Moody on a 17-yard touchdown strike with 5:44 remaining in the half. Cook forced a fumble on Rhode Island’s ensuing kickoff return, and freshman Airek Green returned it 19 yards to the Rams’ 2-yard line. Although W&M was unable to get in the end zone, Kuhn made a 19-yard field goal to push the advantage to 13-0. Rhode Island responded on its next possession, however, and cut the margin to 13-7 when running back Ayo Isijola scored on a 20-yard touchdown run with just 0:58 remaining in the half. Despite taking over inside its own 20, Rhode Island marched to the Tribe’s 3-yard line but failed to convert a fourth-and-goal when senior cornerback Ben Cottingham broke up a pass in the right side of the end zone intended for Isijola. After seeming to hold the Tribe to a 3-and-out on the ensuing drive, URI was whistled for a roughing the punter penalty that enabled the Tribe to post a 19-play, 97-yard drive that lasted 8:15 and culminated with a 3-yard touchdown run by Marriner to put the College ahead, 19-7. W&M’s two-point conversion attempt failed. On the first play of the next series, Francks intercepted URI quarterback Steve Probst at the Rams’ 29-yard line and Riggins scored on a 9-yard scamper five plays later. W&M’s defensive unit held Rhode Island to just 29 yards of total offense in the fourth quarter to help preserve the victory. WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (10/23/10) -- The No. 4/5 William and Mary football team rallied back from a 10-point halftime deficit to earn a thrilling 17-16 victory against No. 2 Delaware in front of a sold-out homecoming crowd at Zable Stadium. The Blue Hens had a chance to retake the lead with less than a minute remaining, but placekicker Mike Perry’s 42-yard field goal attempt from the right hash missed wide to the left as the Tribe held on for the one-point triumph. After missing the previous two games with an injury, senior quarterback Mike Callahan returned midway through the third quarter and engineered a pair of touchdown drives. He finished the contest completing 7-of-10 passes for 93 yards with a touchdown. Payton Award candidate running back Jonathan Grimes also came up big with a game-high 77 yards rushing and threw a go-ahead 6-yard touchdown pass to senior wideout Chase Hill midway through the fourth quarter. After both teams kicked field goals in the first quarter, UD looked as if they might score again early in the second, but linebackers Dante Cook and Evan Francks stopped running back Andrew Pierce for no gain on a fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line. A 51-yard touchdown pass from Pat Devlin to Nihja White and a 40-yard field goal by Mike Perry as the first half clock expired gave Delaware a 13-3 advantage at the break. After entering the game midway through the third quarter, Callahan led the Tribe on a seven-play, 70-yard drive that ended with a 15-yard touchdown pass to junior tight end Alex Gottlieb. Although Delaware answered with a field goal, W&M responded with the go-ahead touchdown on Grimes’ 6-yard pass to Hill in the back right corner of the end zone with 6:25 remaining. After Perry’s 42-yard field goal missed wide left with 25 seconds remaining, the Tribe was able to kneel on the ball and run out the clock. CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (10/30/10) -- The No. 3/4 William and Mary football team held a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter, but North Carolina rallied back with a pair of touchdowns in the final 10 minutes to edge the Tribe, 21-17, at Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill, N.C. The loss snapped W&M’s six-game winning streak. Junior quarterback Michael Paulus threw a pair of touchdown passes to senior wide receiver Chase Hill, and redshirt freshman placekicker Drake Kuhn kicked a 28-yard field goal to help the Tribe take a 17-7 lead at halftime. Despite being held scoreless in the third quarter, North Carolina outgained the Tribe, 280-94, during the final 30 minutes en route to rallying back to earn the narrow victory. After missing a 23-yard field goal on its opening possession, the Tribe got on the scoreboard moments later on a 6-yard touchdown pass from Paulus to Hill to give the College a 6-0 lead with 4:37 showing. The Tribe failed to convert the extra point. The short 3-play, 18-yard drive was set up following an interception by linebacker Wes Steinman at the UNC 32-yard line that he returned 14 yards. After UNC scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak by T.J. Yates late in the second quarter, Paulus connected with Hill on a 9-yard touchdown strike with just 0:23 remaining in the half. Paulus then found Alex Gottlieb on a successful 2-point conversion, as the tight end stretched across the goal line to put W&M ahead, 14-7. Paulus completed all seven of his passing attempts during the drive, totaling 70 yards through the air. Sophomore linebacker Jabrel Mines recovered a UNC fumble on the ensuing kickoff, and Kuhn kicked a 28-yard field goal four plays later as the second quarter clock expired to extend the margin to 17-7 at the half. A 3-yard touchdown pass from Yates to Ryan Taylor with 8:32 remaining cut the deficit to 17-14, and the Tar Heels took the lead on a 67-yard touchdown run by Johnny White with 5:27 left to play. W&M marched to the UNC 34 on its next drive, but an 11-yard sack on third down forced a fourth-and-17 that the Tribe was unable to convert. W&M’s final drive stalled near midfield. Nov. 6, 2010 Cowell Stadium • Durham, N.H.
DURHAM, N.H. (11/6/10) -- The No. 4/5 William and Mary football team snapped No. 8 New Hampshire’s school-record 12-game home winning streak with a 13-3 victory at Cowell Stadium in Durham, N.H. The Tribe posted one of its best efforts of the season defensively, as it held UNH to just 275 total yards. W&M was especially effective against the run and allowed just 39 yards (on 31 carries) on the ground. Although the Tribe totaled just 171 yards of total offense, Payton Award candidate running back Jonathan Grimes rushed for a game-high 111 yards with a touchdown. Eighty-seven of Grimes’ yards, as well as his touchdown, came in the second half. While neither team was able to score during the opening quarter, UNH took a 3-0 lead when Mike MacArthur kicked a 40-yard field goal with 14:57 showing in the second quarter. W&M answered two possessions later when redshirt freshman quarterback Brent Caprio connected with senior wide receiver Chase Hill on a 19-yard touchdown pass in the left side of the end zone midway through the second quarter. The extra-point attempt was unsuccessful. Caprio, who was making his first collegiate start, completed all three of his pass attempts on the seven-play, 51-yard drive. After taking possession at its own 37-yard line with 1:02 remaining in the half, UNH quickly drove to the Tribe’s 21- and appeared in position to score. However, junior safety Jake O’Connor intercepted a pass by quarterback R.J. Toman in the end zone to halt the drive. After Caprio was forced out of the game due to injury midway through the third quarter, the Tribe offense began to utilize its rushing attack. Grimes was a significant contributor in that effort down the stretch, and his 1-yard touchdown run with 0:56 remaining in the third quarter gave W&M at 13-3 lead. The short three-play, 35-yard drive was set up when Jabrel Mines recovered a fumble on punt coverage. UNH had a pair of scoring opportunities in the fourth quarter, but neither yielded any points. Beerhalter came up with a huge stop on a fourth-and-1 at W&M’s 23 midway through the quarter, while MacArthur missed a 41-yard field goal with 2:49 remaining.
