WEEKLY HONORS PLAYER OF THE WEEK AARON ESTRADA | Hofstra
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK BEN BURNHAM | Charleston
Estrada is the first three-time CAA Player of the Week this season thanks to a standout performance in Hofstra’s Sunday win at James Madison. The guard from New Jersey scored 20 points while adding seven rebounds and seven assists in the Pride’s 87-80 victory over the Dukes – a contest that featured 23 lead changes and was JMU’s first home loss of the season. Estrada played all 40 minutes in the victory.
Burnham collected his third CAA Rookie of the Week honor with an all-around effort to help Charleston to its first victory of conference play. The forward from South Carolina scored 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting while adding four rebounds, two blocks, and a steal in the Cougars’ 65-61 win over Elon on Sunday. Charleston has won seven of nine Rookie of the Week honors this season with Burnham’s three trailing Reyne Smith’s four for the individual lead.
NEWS AND NOTES HERE WE ARE NOW, ENTERTAIN US 13 of 17 games so far in CAA play have been decided by single digits, nine by four points or less, and three by a one-point difference. The CAA ranks third among all conferences with 35.3% (6 of 17) games with a margin of less than four points or overtime. William & Mary is the first CAA team to win two one-point games to open conference play since the Tribe did it in 2009-10, opening that year’s conference slate with a home win over VCU and road victory at Hofstra before playing two more one-point games to begin the league schedule. The Tribe’s first three CAA games have been decided by a total of six points. HOME IS WHERE THE WINS ARE Despite a 3-1 day for road teams Saturday, home squads are 11-6 in CAA play, a .647 winning percentage that ranks eighth nationally. UNCW and Towson are 2-0 at home in conference games, while Hofstra is 1-0, and Delaware is yet to play a home game. LUCKY NUMBER NINE? The last remaining unbeaten team in the CAA standings is UNCW, which was idle Saturday after earning wins over Delaware and Elon to begin its conference schedule. The Seahawks were picked ninth in the CAA preseason poll - the same spot occupied the previous October by 2021 regular season champion James Madison. AARON’S PARTY Hofstra’s Aaron Estrada has risen to the ranks of the CAA’s leading scorer during a remarkable offensive stretch. Estrada’s 30-point effort Saturday was his fourth-straight game of 20+ points to open CAA play, giving the transfer guard a 23.8 points per game average in conference play and 15.8 overall on the season. Estrada has been named CAA Player of the Week three times this season.
