Van Nuys, CA - APOGLA participated again in a Tree Care Service Project of TREE PEOPLE, an environmental nonprofit organization that unites the power of trees, people and technology to grow a sustainable future for Los Angeles and we are fulfilling our commitment to the environment as a FUTURE FRIENDLY Organization that supports the virtue of taking responsibility for the urban environment and maintaining a habitable ECOSYSTEM for others to take pleasure in the future. APOGLA AA is not new with the Tree People because in 1981 one of the earliest service project of APOGLA, which was APO AA of California then, was Tree Tran spotting Project with TREE PEOPLE and it was chaired by our own Brother Alex Aquino and we are just continuing this legacy since 2010. The Tree Care Service Project was held at Anthony C. Beilenson Park Lake Balboa in Van Nuys CA. It was a very nice warm weather. Though it was a busy day for the brethren of APOGLA as there will be another Fund Raising Service Project, APOGLA is involved, on that day at 6 PM in Incarnation Church Community Gym in Glendale, CA for the Reo Brothers in Concert that will benefit APOGLA though with a very tight schedule we can say that APOGLA is well represented on that early morning as there are 33 volunteers including the 8 APO Kids. Our Brethren and APO Kids did a wonderful endeavor as we start cleaning the area of the young Cherry Blossom trees , Japan’s gift to the United States in 1912 to celebrate the both nations friendship then. The trees need a tender loving care by watering them, at least three buckets, about 2-3 gallons a bucket, of water. Cont’d on page 5

PRESIDENT’S MESSA GE MESSAGE Hello! Brothers and Sister March madness is here and it starts when the earth is finally visible under the snow (except here in LA!) but its’ more obvious when we notice the gradual lengthening of our day. But for APOGLA, we start it with our annual service to the LA Marathon. The LA Marathon this year promised a sunny day and it did! It was very convenient for us but unfortunately not for the runners. We had a good attendance but we missed some of our APOGLA troop. Since the madness doesn’t stop there, we hope you could join us as we proceed to the Tree Care Service project. It’s scheduled on March 15 at the Anthony Beilenson Park in Lake Balboa. As an Eco-Friendly organization, we will be doing our share in saving our Mother Earth and the environment. In the evening of March 15, we will be co-sponsoring another concert but this time it will be with the REO Brothers of Tacloban City. These talented Brothers had just had a successful performance at Madison Square Garden in New York. This concert is for the benefit of the victims of the super typhoon Yolanda in the Philippines. And to save the best for last, we are going to Palm Springs for our March GMM at Bro. Vince Argonza’s Mansion on March 22, 2014. Halina kayo sa kasayahan sa Palm Spring! Just a reminder, ACNA quarterly meeting will be on April 4-5, 2014 at Sheraton Cerritos hotel hosted by APO South Bay. Our thanks again to PP Egay Ninofranco for another successful LA Marathon service. And also our thanks to Bro Eric Aralar for the Tree Care Service project. Let’s keep the candle of service burning by supporting our service projects and more! “A Legacy of Unity, Strength and Service”

BO ARD OF DIRECT OR’S CORNER BOARD DIRECTOR’S By the time this article goes to print, we would have conducted our 28th year of service at the Los Angeles Marathon. Quite a historic feat, if I may say so. The sponsors of this yearly event may have changed a lot over the years, yet APO-GLA has quietly manned the Water Station at Mile 13. Kudos to our indefatigable Chairman, Bro. Egay Ninofranco.

Treasurer, which may be appointive. Furthermore, the Board will also discuss whether we should revert back to having the position of Treasurer as an elective one. The reason behind is that the positions of President and Treasurer are critical in the day-to-day management of the Organization. Having an elected Treasurer will dispel any suspicions of collusion between the President and the Treasurer. We have heard of stories (not in APOGLA) from other Associations of funds “disappearing” from their coffers during the tenures of certain brethren. To prevent this from happening, we believe that opening the Treasurer’s position to all those interested in running will give the general membership several choices, basing their selection on the candidate’s qualifications. Secretly though, some wanted to follow suit. It was obviously a fun day and another successful service project for APOGLA. No wonder that Brod Egay , though tired, was grinning from ear to ear! It was no surprise too, that as the last of the runners passed by, everyone trooped to the table full of varying viands to partake of a late lunch at 2:00 pm and to drink lots of WATER for they kept giving water to others and forgot their own thirst. Though exhausted, they were all smiles and there was nary a complaint, for in their hearts they were all glad to be of service -a true and fine quality of a real APO! - by Sis Fely Logarta-Montecillo

APOGLA is futur e friendl y future friendly We also remove some of the wild weeds with our hands and with an iron garden hoe, as the weeds affect their growth and contend emulously to survive and to rest assure that they are well nourish for the next 3-4 weeks. We took care about more than 40 young trees on that day which will be the future of that park and for the next generation to see and enjoy. We are there to render service to the community by standing up and spearheading this ECOFRIENDLY Service Project by exercising our LEADERSHIP Principle and keeping the light burning of one of the APO Cardinal Principles by rendering a heartwarming SERVICE‌..and at the same time for us and our children to learn the importance of TREES to the environment we live in and for them to understand that Mother Earths future is in our hands and it is our responsibility to protect and nurture it for the next generation and we extend ours. We had an amazing time on that day because we know that we made a difference. In the end of the day we went home satisfied and fulfilled as we are now part of an earthly solution to keep the environment we live in CLEAN AND GREEN. At the same time we extend our FRIENDSHIP to others, people from Turkey and others who were there like us to render service as well. The Tree People were very thankful to us as we did a job well done and they are looking forward to see and work with us again in the future. The fun did not stop there as after the service project fellowship continued at Sis Emma Galang’s residence with a BBQ , which we are very thankful for a warm accommodation as always, and with the APO Kids dipping in the pool, I can say that we had a blast and made an amazing meaningful contribution to place we live in and to future generation on that day. Thank you very much to all the Brethren and their family that showed up, especially to the Executive Committee headed by our APOGLA President Jerome Paggao and to everyone who also brought foods and drinks to share on that day. FOUR TACL OB AN LADS R OCKED L OS ANGELES CLOB OBAN ROCKED LOS

Glendale, CA — Four talented and amazing young lads who formed the REO Brothers Band from Tacloban, Leyte, rocked Los Angeles when they performed at the Incarnacion Church Gym last Saturday (March 15) in this suburban city. The three-hour nonstop concert was interrupted only by an intermission of speeches from organizers, awarding of sponsors and litany of recognition for dignitaries in attendance. About 500 appreciative crowd jampacked the nonairconditioned gym to listen to popular songs from the Beatles, Bee Gees, Dave Clark 5, Beach Boys, Gary Lewis and The Playboys, Lettermen; America, The Ventures; VST & Co. and Frank Sinatra-inspired Michael Buble’ songs. I counted 34 songs excluding a medley pop hits. Although they were not yet born when these hit songs became popular in the 1960s and 1970s, the REO Brothers immersed themselves with these classic music from their father’s (Rey Otic) old albums. The REO Brothers out of four siblings derived their band name from the first letters of their first names which is “R” and surnames (Otic). They formed their band four years ago using decrepit and borrowed instruments. After the devastation of Tacloban, Leyte that left them homeless and penniless, they left for Manila with uncertain future. “We faced many challenges but never lost hope. And even when we’re sad, we don’t bring it up on stage. Dapat masaya kami,” they shared that appeared in Inquirer, a Manila Daily. The REO Brothers’ Band is comprised of Ralph (Bass player), the youngest at 17; Reymart, 19, playing Rythm guitar; RJ, 21 on the lead guitar and Reno, the eldest at 24, playing the drums. From a provinciano and plain looking skinny guys, the young rockers were transformed to a well-groomed and sharp-looking in their well-tailored suits. They auditioned at a Manila Nightclub with a wary club owner with a do or die predicament. They passed the audition and performed with aplomb. Their performance earned rave reviews. Eventually, they performed every Tuesday at Primos Cuisine and Music Lounge in Manila and assembled a

large following after that. They were also invited to play in numerous parties. Then they were recommended to perform at Araneta Coliseum for a fund-raiser for Typhoon Haiyan victims topbilled by the likes of Lea Salonga, Lea Misalucha, Bamboo, etc. Thereafter, they performed at Madison Square Garden organized by the Filipino community in New York before performing in Los Angeles on their way to Manila. With only two weeks to prepare, their Los Angeles gig was organized by Rotary Club of Historic Filipino Town, our very own Alpha Phi Omega of Greater Los Angeles and Alpha Phi Omega Alumni of Eta Chapter (University of the Philippines). After it was promoted on Social Media, the concert snowballed. Well-meaning individuals, firms and restaurants banded together to support their stay in this metropolitan city like their meals, board and lodging, transportation and a trip to Las Vegas and Disneyland. Although they did not have a formal music training, they sang and played their instruments on the stage like a pro and strutted with confidence. Every song they performed were well-received like the Beatles’ Help, In My Life, Here Comes The Sun (as the tagline theme they chose in their promotional tour), Please, Please Me, You Gonna Lose That Girl, Hard Day’s Night, I Wanna Hold Your Hands, From Me To You, With A Little Help From My Friends, Do You Want To Know A Secret, I Will, And I love Her, Twist And Shout, I Saw Her Standing There, All My Loving, Tell Me Why, I Feel Fine, Act Naturally, I Wanna Hold Your Hanhds, Hey Jude and Can’t Buy Me Love; Dave Clark 5’s Because, You’ll Never Know, Hurting Inside; The Ventures’ instrumental; The Beach Boys’ Surfin’ USA, Babarella; Lettermen’s Going Out of my Head; America’s Ventura Highway, VST & Co’s Awitin Mo, Awit Ng Pag-Ibig, Tayoy’s Magsayawan, Rock Baby Rock; and Gary Lewis and The Playboys song which I could not figure out the title. The motley crowd became euphoric when the rhythm guitarist egged the attendees to dance to their music. The ecstatic crowd of all ages especially those who grew up with the Beatles as well as the music of the 60s and 70s top hits like me danced to our hearts content. They gamely responded to the cue when popular lawyers of Southern California: Roman Mosqueda and Alma Luna Reyes boogied together to the tune of Ringo Starr’s “Act Naturally.” From the euphoria written on their faces akin to the crowd when fans watched the Ed Sullivan Show in New York 50 years ago and other concert tour the world over, the crowd went home filled with memories. I can relate to the REO Brothers’ music because as a recreational band member playing Bass guitar for our APOGLA Fraternity named APO Friday Night Band in the 1990s, some of my fraternity brothers in attendance approached me and said, “you should also be on the stage singing with them. Ouch! I just smiled. Thanks for the memories.

From the VP’s View A LIVEL Y EX CHANGE OF IDEAS LIVELY EXCHANGE Another assembly meeting had resonated well among the attendees at a bowling lanes’s restaurant in Glendale during our 2nd GMM despite a change of venue in a short notice. The food was abundant mostly Chinese cuisine ordered from the restaurant aside from the native kambing papaitan courtesy of Brod Alex Almazan.

There was a lively exchange of ideas after I delivered a personal and collective privilege speech in sponsoring the membership of Brod Alex (Theta) and Sis Almazan (Alpha) formerly vanguards of APO-Hollywood who resigned their membership there. I explained in my sponsorship speech that after spending sometime in that breakaway alumni association, they preferred and fit more to our style of leadership and culture, projects and activities.

Two brods were also welcome during our debut meeting in January namely: Brods Bobet Peneza of and Ruben Maruquin, Sr. of Gamma Beta ‘75 who reside in Glendora. Some of them had already paid their membership dues. Of course, to be bonafide members and enjoy the full benefits of APOGLA membership like to vote and be voted upon during this year’s election, these newcomer brods have to pay their 2014 fees.

Although they were not present, Bro. Alex and Sis Irma were welcomed overwhelmingly by the assembly. Some of the speakers who spoke well and endorsed them into APOGLA fold include ACNA President Brod Tito Tarculas, past APOGLA Presidents Bonjie Ingco, Dony Rondilla, Ferdie Yambot, Tony Gomez, former COB Tony Amon and former treasurer Ed Romero. During the meeting, there were two brods who were welcomed in a “Right of Passage” welcome ritual namely: Brod Romeo T. Martinez, Sr. of Pi Chapter ’71 (alias Pakitong-Kitong now based in Van Nuys) and Brod Geoffrey F. Arabit of Alpha Phi now based in Alhambra. Another newcomer brod who attended the meeting was Brod Edwin Arambit of Pi ’73 (Startrek) now based in Chino. He missed the formal welcome ceremony as he visited his son who lives nearby for an hour but came back towards the end of the fellowship.

Here are some updates of our December 13, 2014 Affair for your information: The venue is the five-star Marriott Hotel-Long Beach on 4700 Airport Plaza Dr., Long Beach, CA 90815 with Tel. No. 562-425-5210. The main cross streets are Lakewood Blvd. and Spring St. If you plan to reserve your room overnight after the party, you may want to call the hotel ahead of time at $129 per room. Just mention APOGLA so they can book you around our hospitality suite. Contact Marla Miralles (Catering Sales Manager) or Patty Burns (Event Manager). by Bro. Dan Nino

GOINGS ON

by Sis. Fely Montecillo

Whew! Here we are on the third month of the year - March! This is the month named after the Roman god of war, Mars. During this month, the winter ends and spring begins. In the northern half of the world, spring begins in March 19-21, which is the day when the sun is directly over the equator. At this time, the animals end hibernation and begin to show up. March is the Red Cross month and the National Women’s History Month in the U.S., the United Kingdom and Australia, In the Philippines, it is the Fire Prevention Month. I’m sure the womenfolk in APO took note that March 9 was Girl Scout Sunday. Also on this day which coincided with the LA MARATHON, we moved forward for one hour as on this day, daylight savings time started. March 17 is the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day so, remember to wear green on that day!

ACN A UPD ATE CNA UPDA The ACNA Spring Council Meeting (3rd Quarter) will be hosted by the APO Alumni Association of South Bay on: April 4 - 5, 2014 at the Sheraton Cerritos Hotel, Cerritos, CA. See details below. SHERATON CERRITOS HOTEL 12725 Center Court Drive Cerritos CA 90703 For room reservations, call: Tel. Nos. The Holy Father’s intentions for the month of March, 2014 is that all cultures may respect the rights and dignity of women and that many young people may accept the Lord’s invitation to consecrate their lives to proclaiming the Gospel. ************************ ACAI President BROD JUN DOMINGO is proud to announce to one and all that preparations for the Chapter’s mini-reunion in the Big Apple to coincide with the ACNA CONVENTION is going full speed ahead. To date , over twenty have signified their intentions to join. Members are already excited with the thoughts of planning for future projects here and abroad in the meetings they will have, the bonding and party time , the shopping for the ladies, and the sights and sounds of the city that never sleeps. Still with ACAI, SIS OPHEL AMON informed the membership that one Brod suggested that the officers and members should have bonding time once every four months outside of Los Angeles, in the nearby areas. That way, she said , members can keep abreast of each other’s lives. I find this a very sound idea as it offers the membership an extra treat - that of taking a break from the hectic pace of life in LA. Hurray!

HOTEL ACCOMODATIONS: Room Rate: $109./night (2 Double Beds) Call (800) 325-3535 by Friday, March 14, 2014. Please mention “ALPHA PHI OMEGA” for block rooms with discounted rate of $109.00/night (2 Double Beds).

BROD BONG ANSULA also informed me that the Pi Chapter will have its own reunion in the Big Apple during the ACNA Convention too, and that more than twenty have signed up already. Well, the more the merrier! New York here we come! ************************ Congratulations to BROD EGAY NINOFRANCO for his superb handling of APOGLA’s service project for the LA MARATHON. He informed us that this is the 28th year he has headed this committee. No wonder then that he knows the ins and outs of this project. We also noted that as head of this project, he is always the first to arrive on the site and always the last to leave. Indeed, that is LEADERSHIP!

To register, please make check payable to: APOAA South Bay and mail to AA Treasurer: Bro. Mike Melendez 2281 Amelia Court, Signal Hill CA 90755

The LA MEDIA was ecstatic about the the number of participants this year plus they were all proud ,as we all are, of the smooth, orderly and peaceful conduct of the marathon. Allow me to stress the obvious. We are all glad to be a part of this famous worldwide event. ************************ I find BROD PREZ. JEROME PAGGAO to be such a cool cat! He’s always so relaxed in meetings and in other activities. Never can you see him panicking , grumpy or stressed out . Hmmm! Wonder why? Perhaps it’s because he’s inspired by his wifey, Florence? Or perhaps he’s so confident that all the officers assigned are happily doing their assigned tasks? ************************ My heroes for the month are BRODS JUN LINSANGAN and BONG ANSULA. Brod Jun is one exemplary officer who will do more than what is expected of him. Ask him for help and he will not stop unless the problem is solved. This is also true with Brod Bong who up to now, has not forgotten what he has learned from his Boy Scout days add to that the fact that he is a true gentleman. Keep it up Brods! May your tribe increase!
