APOkid HANN AH MAR TE IS NEW HANNAH MARTE MISS PHILIPPINES USA 2014 - Hannah Angelica Marte, the eighteen-year old daughter of Brod Rocky (Theta) and Priscilla Marte was crowned Miss Philippines-USA 2014 at the recently concluded Miss Philippines USA (MPUSA) pageant last Sunday, July 27, 2014 held at the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse, 320 South Mission Drive, San Gabriel, California 91776.

San Gabriel, CA

Hannah Marte together with her younger sister Helena Marte are two of the 26 young and beautiful Filipino-American ladies vying for the title this year. Celebrating the beauty, grace, and elegance of young Filipino American women, the pageant's mission is to “develop the finest ambassadors of goodwill and role models for Filipino American women, to raise scholarship funds, to bring awareness on Filipino culture and become an advocate of education through charities that promote education.” MPUSA’s long term objective is for the pageant’s Fil-Am winners to be recognized by participating in other worldwide and international pageant competitions. As you may recall on our June edition of the TNB, Hannah graduated high school earlier this year at the Summit High School in Fontana, CA. She plans to attend college and take up Clinical Science at CalState - Dominguez Hills in the fall. Congratulations to Hannah and to the Marte family, you make us all proud. We wish you success in your reign as Miss Philippines USA for the coming year and your future endeavours. Rest assured your APhiO family will be there to support you all the way. In line with Brod/Pres. Jerome Paggao's Sports and Recreation program, the APOGLA Summer basketball tournament was held last July 19, 2014 at The Midnight Mission gym in downtown Los Angeles. The tournament was chaired by Brod Kusay Bundalian with co-chairmen Brods Ferdie Mamaril and Rudy Emperado. This year's format include 2 color groups Black and White. Each group are categorized as Mixed Team (composed of APOkids and some brods who can still keep up with the young kids) and APO Only Teams (the young once, in short the gayuts). Each category team will play against each other on a best of three series. First to win 2 games will be the champions. The tournament started on time complete with referees, score and time keepers provided by The Midnight Mission facility. The venue located in downtown LA's skid row although very rough outside is very orderly and impressively nice inside. The first game was between the Mixed teams. Both teams are evenly matched and after three overtimes, the White team led by Arque Rivera and Graham Calvario won a come from behind win over the Black team led by Patrick and Christopher Ayo. BO ARD OF DIRECT OR’S CORNER BOARD DIRECTOR’S It is a great honor and privilege for me to give you the BOD REPORT this month in behalf of Brod Chairman Eric Serrano who is currently occupied as COMELEC Chairman for the forthcoming ACNA Election of Officers in the New York Convention this month. We in the Board are continuously reviewing APOGLA's Policies and Procedures if they are in consonance with the current needs of the organization and we are also thoroughly studying the ways and means to improve them to better fit present day issues. The Board is also constantly checking if we are observing and complying with what is mandated by our Constitution and By-Laws..

Being pro-active, the M a y o r ' s O ff i c e h a s many community projects APOGLA can actively participate in and be involved with specially "Heal the Bay Project. This does not only deal with the coast line but also covers the Valley Area like Balboa Lake. To me, our involvement in these projects is like planting seeds for the future. With patience and perseverance, these seeds will surely bear fruits...fruits that can be harvested by future generations of APOGLA members. Meantime, APOGLA's representation to the New York ACNA Convention is close to 30 members strong. This is an indication of our unwavering moral support for our PP Lito Tarculas, outgoing ACNA President. At the same time, we are also showing our fidelity for and participation in ACNA. A new set of officers and leaders will be elected and they lead the way so the Association will be able to attain its goals. May our delegates exemplify moral leadership, and strength of character. Let us show the mettle of how APOGLA members are made of. We are all proud of you!

And now for the good news. The BOD has started a series of meetings with the office of LA Mayor Garcetti lately. Through the persistent efforts of our BOD Chair Brod Eric Serrano, we had our first meeting at the City Mayor's Office . On the APOGLA side, we were represented by BOD Chair Eric Serrano, President Jerome Paggao who came with his wife, Florence, PP's Melody Ang-Gayon and Emma Galang. From the Mayor's office were Ms. Maria Sheets, Director of Community Beautification, Board of Public Works, Mr. Ryan Carpio, the Mayor's Office Internal Affairs Liaison, and Mr. Max Reyes, Area Representative for Asian Pacific Islander Community.

And talking of leadership, may I remind you of our own elections? You now have a big chance of serving APOGLA by running for the BOD this coming elections. There are three slots open. If you want to see positive changes in our beloved organization, if you feel you'll make a difference, don't be contented with being a mere observer - Go, serve and lead! See you in the Big Apple! In behalf of the Board,

Sis. Emma Rubina-Galang

THE BIGGEST SURPRISE OF MY LIFE By Bro. Dan E. Nino, VP-Membership One lazy Sunday afternoon (Aug. 10), my son Denver who is also an APO fraternity brother (Rho Gamma,Cal State, Long Beach) invited me, my wife and brother-inlaw purportedly for a dinner at a fine restaurant somewhere in Elysian Park/Dodger Stadium area. Perhaps, I told myself, it’s my son’s way of despedida dinner because two days after, he would fly to Dubai and Europe. This despedida is something different because he will treat us. My wife put on her formal dress and I wore my socks which I don’t normally wear when using my sandals. I was wondering why of all places it’s in Dodger Stadium or within the vicinity since there are also numerous fine dining restaurants in the Cerritos area where I live. On the transition from Fwy 101 towards Fwy 110 North, traffic was at a standstill for about 30 minutes. I told my son, next time, if you go to Dodger Stadium, please use Fwy 5. I was becoming impatient because his reservation was supposed to be at 8:00 p.m. and we were still struck in traffic. I verbalized my frustration. Perhaps there’s either a Dodger’s game or concert by exBeatle Paul McCartney and the Wings because I read it beforehand but forgot the exact date. At the first sign of exit, I urged him to transition immediately to Spring St. then turn right on to Broadway towards Chinatown to escape the unbearable traffic. Lo and behold, our reliable GPS led us uphill to Dodger Stadium. As we turned right, I saw a huge banner hung printed with Paul McCartney Out There Concert. I told my son, how can we dine here when there are an ocean of vehicles and sea of humanity? Finally, my son broke his silence and showed us the admission ticket he reserved and paid on the internet. Of course, I was flabbergasted and exclaimed, ‘This is a dream come true. This is the biggest surprise of my life. Prior to this, the first time I saw Paul McCartney’s concert with the Beatles was at Rizal Stadium in Manila in 1967 at the age 16 — 47 years ago. When I immigrated to the U.S. in 1981, my thirst for watching the Beatles or Paul McCartney was only confined on the videos or DVDs. I really wanted to hug my son because this is such a big surprise. I thought my son cared for me after all. He knows my weakness. He..he.. A genius songwriter and savvy musician and performer, he briefly described his feeling on the stage with the applauding and appreciative audience, he jested, “I’m concentrating on the words and melody of the music while strumming my guitar, if I commit mistake, I’m blaming it on you.” The crowd roared with laughter. The concert had no opening performers. Paul McCartney debuted at 9:37 p.m. with old favorites like “Eight Days A Week,” “All My Loving” and Wings’ top hits like “Listen To What The Man Said” and “Let Me Roll In.” Thereafter, he paid tribute to his friend Jimi Henrix by belting out one of his classic rocks on guitar. Thereafter, McCartney segued to “Paper Back Writer.” In between, he announced his new composition dedicated to his current wife Nancy with a Happy Valentine theme. This was followed by his old ballad, the poignant “Long And Winding Road.” He followed suit with “Maybe I’m Amazed with him on the piano to the wild applause of the huge crowd estimated at 65,000 attendees. After belting out the song, he discarded his coat. At this juncture, he ad-libbed, “How are you doing people especially at the back. Paul is a gifted and versatile musician, no doubt. He played several instruments in the concert like bass, rhythm and lead guitar, piano, keyboard, acoustic guitar and, ukulele. He resumed with “We Can Work It Out.” The crowd who were familiar with the words sang with him. He ad-libbed once again. He told the crowd, he last performed at Dodger Stadium in 1966. He continued with “Another Day.” He changed tempo with an old favorite, “And I Love Her.” Mindful of hot spots in several countries, he told the audience, “There are lots of troubles in the world today. Let’s give everyone a bit of hope.” Then he resumed with a folk rock, “Blackbird.”

He also paid tribute to his song-writing mate John Lennon, a slow ballad with Paul on the piano. The title escaped my memory. Then he burst to “Lady Madonna” with footage of women celebrities like Mona Lisa, Marilyn Monroe and Kate Middleton portraits as backdrops. He also sang “All Together Now” I don’t know if this is the correct title. He played several hits from Sgt. Pepper’s album like “Lovely Rita” and Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite.” After he sang, he enthused, “Thank you very much Los Angeles and California.” He also paid tribute to George Harrison by strumming a ukulele while singing “Something.” He was later accompanied by the full band. He segued to “Obladi Oblada” with the audience singing with him, followed by “Band On The Run.” From the crowd’s reaction, Paul McCartney was adored like a semi-God. Without any intermission, he sang”Back In The USSR.” Pausing briefly, he recalled he had a great time when he performed at Red Square in Russia and a kid tersely talked to him, “Hello Goodbye.” He asked the Russian boy, “how did you learn to speak English?” From your records,” he responded deadpan. He sang the melancholic “Let It Be” with cell phones and lighters held aloft and swayed by the audience. He also sang “Live And Let Live” from a Bond movie accompanied by a burst of fiery fireworks into the air from the back stage causing a stage pandemonium like a fourth of July. The crowd was ecstatic. This was followed by another poignant ballad “Hey Jude” Paul’s voice sounded tired at this time. After the song, McCartney’s Band gathered in front of the stage to take a bow at 10:00 p.m. However, the crowd won’t leave. They clamored for more. At this juncture, Paul got hold of an American flag and waved it around the stage while the crowd chanted, “USA, USA, USA.” As an encore, Paul sang “Day Tripper” and “Hi HI Hi” Thereafter, two ladies culled from the audience went up the stage holding their posters. Paul hugged them and signed his autograph on the arm of one of the ladies. At 11:05 p.m., Paul signaled the end of the concert. The crowd rose to a standing ovation but refused to leave. In response, Paul was handed his acoustic guitar and sang his signature ballad, “Yesterday” accompanied by a bandmate on keyboard. At 11:10, Paul jested again, “I thought you were already walking out.” Obviously, Paul and his Wings Band had more repertoire to play. He sang “Helter Skelter with a video footage beamed in a riot of colors. At 11: 15 p.m. He hollered, “Thank You Very Much. We have to go.” Paul showed his appreciation to his band. “The band is one of the best bands in the planet. It’s a fantastic band.” Still the crowd refused to live. Reciprocating to the crowd’s affection, Paul responded with two hits from Abbey Road LP, “Golden Slumbers”, “Carry That Weight” and “The End” True to the title of the song, “The End”, Paul Mc CArtney and his Wings Band took their final bow highlighted by a burst of more fireworks, strobe lights and smoke flood. It was a perfect mild weather with the crowd fully satisfied with the two hours and 42 minutes non-stop show. The congested traffic and hassles of parking were completely dissipated into thin air after the concert. We did not mind the cost of three glasses of beer, three scoops of French fries and four hot dogs amounting to $86, high-priced admission tickets and concert Tshirt. This might be Paul McCartney’s last show in Los Angeles. He is not getting young anymore. It was a fond memory which will linger for a long period of time. It was historic for me because I grew with the Beatles’ music singing in high school programs and with our APO Friday Night Band in the late 1980s. To borrow Paul McCartney’s fitting farewell song, “And in the end, the love you make is equal to the love you take.” Tidbits: Finally, The Outstanding Filipino-American Students have been chosen. Plans for the Awards ceremony are afoot. Congrats to Hannah Marte, the 18-year-old lovely daughter of Bro. Rocky Marte and wife Priscilla who was recently crowned as Miss Philippines USA. – denino1951@gmal.com

The issue of 501C3 has been an ongoing question with APOPGLA for a very long time. Most of the time, the discussion is centered on whether we should operate and function as a 501C3 organization or just be a social organization. And it’s always contentious every time we talk about this topic without reaching any agreement. . Para tayong bangka na walang layag o “rudder”, paikot-ikot lang na walang pararatingan. My guess why we always arrive in this predicament is because of lack of understanding of 501C3 and/or we do not know what to make of it. I plan to have this column regularly in the hope that we could be enlightened and to have a better understanding as to how we can derive more benefits from our 501C3 status. I am not professing that I have all the answers however, what I can say is that I have put a lot of time in studying it and I have even attended a seminar regarding the inner workings of a 501C3. One thing I know is that there are lesser minded people than us who are successfully operating a 501C3 organization. In fact, I know of a 2man nonprofit organization who now owns a building in Los Angeles. I could not take that this people are better than us because I know the caliber of our members are far more superior than these people. Alpha Phi Omega Philippines of Greater Los Angeles (APOPGLA) was incorporated on May 26, 1998 as a nonprofit organization in the State of California. We then applied for 501C3 status with the IRS and was granted the 501C3 status on February 1999. Subsequently, on January 29, 2003, IRS issued letter 150 ruling that we are a PUBLIC nonprofit organization under section 501 (A) 1 of the code and not as a private foundation. So APOPGLA is a 501C3 organization and not a social club. What’s the difference between a public nonprofit and a private foundation? One of the biggest differences is in terms of funding source. A public nonprofit organization generally derive mostly its funding and support from the public like individuals, government, corporations and other nonprofit organizations. On the other hand, Private foundations normally get their support from single individual, family and the corporation. Private Foundations do not solicit funds

from the public. Donations to nonprofit organizations are normally tax deductible. Like any other public organizations example of which are United Way, California State Employees Charitable Campaign and Red Cross, APOGLA was designed to support and to give grants to other organizations whose mission and goals are align with ours. This is important because as a smaller nonprofit organization, we can solicit funding from these larger organizations whose mission is similar to us. APOPGLA was organized exclusively for educational and charitable purposes. And one mission mentioned in our Article of Incorporation is that we are going to work in the area of youth and child development. Also stated in furtherance of our goals is that we will remain to be operated as a service organization and to assemble people furthering the ideals of leadership, friendship and service. This last paragraph gives us an opportunity to broaden our mission because practically whatever we do it will fall on these three principles of APO. Regardless of any activities we do, all of APOPGLA’s actions and decisions are subject and governed by the rules and regulation of a 501C3 statute. The President and his/her administration are in charge of the operation and activities of the organization but ultimately, the Board of Directors (BOD) is totally responsible for the well being of our organization They are responsible in making sure that ALL of our activities are in line with the goals and missions as stated above and in our Articles of Incorporation One of the benefits of being a 501C3 organization is the privilege of being exempted from paying federal and State taxes. There was a time that we owed the State several thousand of dollars in back taxes arising from nonpayment of the minimum corporate tax which was about $800.00 per year. This necessitated for us to change our name because we were not a 501C3 then. Now, we do not have that problem. However, about 3 or 4 years ago, we almost lost that privilege. Our corporate status was rescinded due to our failure to submit and comply with the Statement of Information with the Secretary of the State. I spent most of my term as Chairman of the Board working on reinstating our corporate status so that we won’t lose our 501C3 status.

The second game was between the APO Only teams. The audience can tell, the spirit is there but the body just would not cooperate for most of the APO Only players. An so, the team with the most fighting spirit won, the Black Team. The rematch between the Mixed teams ended with the White team winning another tightly contested game. And therefore the White Mixed Team are the champions. Due to time constraints, the Black team were declared champions of the APO Only category . Most valuable players of the tournaments were Arque Rivera for Mixed category and Brod Bobet Peneza for APO Only category. I signed up for the Guatemala mission, blindly. I didn’t know what I was getting myself into, except the willingness to make life beautiful for others. I mean, wasn’t that Missions Trips were all about? Helping others? It took many preparations, from preparing beef and pork chop fundraisers, selling scarves, selling hand woven knits and prayers. Lots and lots of prayer. One thing I had to have was courage. Everyone in the program knew each other, except me, I was the outsider. But I reminded myself why I was doing this... to serve. After five months of hard work and convincing, three high school sophomores and three high school graduates committed to the back breaking and unpredictable work of the Guatemala Mission Project. The Guatemala Mission Project was offered to any families who needed help. Its main goal was to show God’s love, with the help of also, building high-efficiency stoves to homes that are suffering from the smoke of their own cooking. The stoves were called ‘Onil Stoves’ and it consisted two parts - an inside and an outside. It took at least an hour to handle everything together. The only amount the Guatemalan people had to pay was thirty-five quetzals, which is five dollars. With all the houses we helped, there were one house that struck our team the most. When we first came in, we met a mother and a daughter, who was trying to wake up her father on top of the roof, who was past out drunk. We were told that the father had been past out drunk everyday for the past month and had not provided for the family. No food, nothing. In an instant, adults took action. It was either giving the lady money or buy food. We bought the family food. Of course, as a defense, one of the men in our team came out and told her to hide the food so her husband can’t sell it for any liquor. There was nothing else we can do, but pray for her and her family. The next few days, we had a gathering of thanks and tributes to all the wonderful things God had planned for us that week. During that time, we saw the mother and her daughter, who were suffering with their drunk father, but in our surprise she gave us news that he stopped drinking and will try to continue to stop.

501c3 Na Naman!

I can tell you about all the wonderful stories about Guatemala and the most horrifying, but it doesn’t compare to the actual real life events the Guatemala Project had to go through. Tears were shed, hearts were felt and lives were changed. The mission didn’t just change the Guatemalan people, it changed the team, it changed the five other teenagers who were involved, it changed me. I had helped the Guatemalan people with their homes, but in return, I received a free-spirit, a change in my spirituality and my perspective in life. They once told us that, “you can talk about it all day, write offering checks all day, preach about it all day. But, instead you should’ve been doing something about it. Show God’s love, don’t brag about it.” ….And we did. 35 houses, 70 stoves, 7 teenagers, 1 God. It was the Guatemala Missions Project.

It is very important that we hold on to our nonprofit status even for the simple reason of that tax exemption we are now enjoying. Compliance with the annual Federal and States reporting is not that hard. We just need to document, define, classify and categorize our activities so that everything falls under our stated mission. We can easily do this by keeping good records and proper documentations of all of our activities. Are our current activities in line with our 501C3 mission? It should be. Again this is very important especially if we plan to approach governmental, corporate donors and other public nonprofit organization for solicitation. We can easily comply in making all our projects and activities fall within the scope of our stated missions by merely labeling, classifying and defining them to conform to our stated mission. Firstly, all of our services that provide manpower to other organization can be classified and labeled under charitable work. We can call “tree planting services”, feeding the homeless, helping food bank and operation gratitude as “charitable endeavors”. The TOFASS, Sportfest and APOKIDs Scholarship program can be classified as educational as well as youth and child development program. Even our social activities like camping can fall under of our mission as long as we conduct educational activity and youth development training within the camp site and label it that way. If we do these, it would definitely make it easier for us when it’s time to create a portfolio which we would need if we are going to point and position our fundraising and solicitation activities with Governmental, Corporate and Other National nonprofit organizations. For a start, we can classify membership dues as donations so members can deduct it from their taxes. This is allowable since we do not receive any tangible material or value in return for it. Soliciting funds is not an easy task. It should be a concerted effort by all members and not only by the Board of Trustees (BOT). This is all for now. In my next column, I will be writing about solicitation programs, grant writing, creating a portfolio and some effective mechanism and tools that other nonprofit are employing. In the meantime, if you have any questions and suggestions, please email me at margarchi@hotmail.com. Live happy and enjoy!!! By Bro. Mar Garchitorena

GOINGS ON by Sis. Fely Montecillo

It's August! This month is the Admit You're Happy Month, Family Fun month, National Catfish Month, National Eye Exam month, National Golf month (Attention golfers!), Peach month, Romance Awareness month, Water Quality month (despite the drought?), and National Picnic month. Not to forget....Happy birthday greetings to all born this month! May your days ahead be full of joy and blessings! ************* This month too , has seen a lot of social activities going on at APOGLA. Brod Jovee Jovellanos and Sis Hazel feted their daughter, Alexis Julie, with a birthday party last month at their residence. Among the guests to celebrate the occasion with the family were: Sisters Ruth Manalastas, Ann Asuncion, Gina Aquino, Jen Evangelista, Michelle Monasterio, Daemma Yamzon, Apo wives: Gigi Paras and Precy Marte. Some brods were also present: Roland Paras, Bong Cadaves, Vine Gabriel, Boy Medina, Rocky Marte, Bodjie Gapido, Shane Miranda, Jessie Martinez and Jet Rosal. The kids were not to be outdone. They were there too! To name a few, the Evangelista boys were there, so were Drew Yazon, and the recently proclaimed Ms. Phils.-USA, Hannah Marte. I heard it was one rollicking party! Well, we all know Brod Jovee is a livewire...anywhere! ************* A bienvenida party was hosted by the Alpha Chapter for visiting Brod Chito Faminial and his wifey Perly at the residence of Brod Tony and Sis Ophel in West Hills recently. Brod Chito is based in Toronto, Canada and was here on a brief vacation. Aside from the hosts, other Alpha notables like Alex and Irma Almazan, Erna Villanueva, Rudy Flores, May and Sancho Sy, and Rene Calvario graced the occasion. Food was aplenty and the mood, jovial and warm. ************* It is heartwarming to note that in APOGLA, there is this feeling of oneness and unity. We see and feel it every now and then but we never pay much attention to it. Why? Because it comes or happens spontaneously. Like when one member or a family experiences any misfortune, we always share with this person or family's sad experience. We try to extend a helping hand to make the burden light. On the other hand, if a member or a family experiences joy for some reason, we are always there to share in their celebration. This , I think , was what happened when Hannah Angelica Marte won the coveted title of Ms. Phil.-USA recently. From beginning to the end, APOGLA, was always there to extend a helping hand ...from the voting to the proclamation. APO Brothers and Sisters were there to cheer for Hannah. They all shared in the excitement and the joy of the Marte family. To me, it is this oneness that touches our heartstrings. This is something we treasure. The Pageant where Hannah was declared winner was held at the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse last July 27. Aside from the coveted title Ms. Phils.USA Hannah won, she was also judged best in swimsuit and best in long gown. She now has a one year contract with Ms. Phils.-USA and that will make her busy the whole year as she is expected to help in community services and projects and in fund-raising activities. Congratulations Hannah and to the proud parents Brod Rocky Marte and to his energetic wife, Precy. ************* All roads lead to New York City on Aug. 28 for the ACNA Convention. Many from APOGLA will be going to the Big Apple to give moral support to our very own PP Lito Tarculas as he vows out as President of ACNA. Brod Lito Tarculas has worked hard for ACNA's success. During his term, he was able to successfully implement four big service projects which helped and improved the lives of so many less fortunate individuals in our native land. In San Fernando, La Union, over a thousand people were treated in ACNA's medical and dental mission. During the ACNA convention in Bicol, over 500 were recipients of their medical and dental mission while in Butuan in Mindanao, over 400 were lucky recipients of the same aid. They also had a highly successful scholarship program. We can proudly say that ACNA was at its peak with BROD LITO TARCULAS as its President. Congratulations Brod Lito for a job well-done! Likewise, we also know that Alpha Chapter's Sis Irma Almazan, ACNA VP, has worked so hard for the success of its programs. Sis Irma has been so supportive of Brod Lito, that it would be unfair not to recognize her efforts. Her term, like Brod Lito's, will also end this year. We are proud of you Sis and congratulations for all you that you have done for ACNA!
