P E C H A N G A BU S C A P ADE 2 PA by Bro. Ed Romero APOGLA President Bro Jerome Paggao made the right decision when he suggested to have another Buscapade Part 2 fund raising slated last September 27, 2014 after the successful Buscapade 1 that was previously conducted last July 12, 2014.
OPERA TION GRA TITUDE SER VICE: OPERATION GRATITUDE SERVICE: A-PHI-O SUPPOR TS OUR TR OOPS SUPPORTS TROOPS by Bro Eric Aralar Van Nuys, CA - APOGLA participated in Operation Gratitude Service Project that
was held last September 20, 2014 at the Army National Guard Armory in Van Nuys. It was another overwhelming show of support to our troops overseas who are continuously risking their lives fighting and protecting our freedom and our beloved country that we are enduring. APOGLA has been rendering service to Operation Gratitude since 2007 and supporting their mission of uplifting the spirits of our active servicemen and servicewomen. This is one way of expressing our appreciation to all of our troops overseas for keeping our country safe and our simple humble way to say Thank You Very Much. Forty volunteers from APOGLA attended the service including some brethren from APOUSA’s Alpha Delta Chapter of San Diego State University and several APOkids. The group did their utmost best as we filled-up packages for the troops with sorties such as books and personal toiletries and putting Operation Gratitude mailing labels to each box. We managed to finish early as we are highly enthusiastic and impelled to share our LFS spirit that was followed by a cheerful lunch on site. We had an amazing time on that day because we know that we made a difference on which in the end of the day we went home satisfied and fulfilled as we extend our APO Guiding Principles of Leadership, Friendship and Service on that special day. Thank you very much to all the Brethren and their family who showed up, especially to the Executive Committee headed by our APOGLA President Jerome Paggao and to everyone who also brought food and drinks to share on that day.
Once again, the full support shown by our APOGLA family, relatives, friends and guest in our Buscapade 2 have generated a respectable Net Income amounting to $1,173.09 excluding the $125.00 estimated A/R from pledged donations. Bro/COB Eric Serrano led the Prayer trip for guidance and protection for all the Buscapade participants. As usual, no wasted time for the “Back-Seat-Boys”. As the Bus#5062 left the 1st pick up point at Van Nuys, Panorama City, the fun and merriment started right away without any delay. Also, hard boiled eggs and drinking bottled waters were initially provided to the passengers. However, as soon as we have reached the 2nd pick up point at West Covina, more Bro’s and Sisters crowded the tail section of the Bus and joined the “BackSeat-Boys” APO Juice merriment and fellowship. Empanadas, hard boiled eggs, sweetened corn and Hors Devours were additionally served to the participants. Cont’d on page 6

BO ARD OF DIRECT OR’S CORNER BOARD DIRECTOR’S In the next few weeks, we will be called once again to select the incoming Officers of APO-GLA for DY 2015. By the looks of it, there will be largely one candidate for each executive position. The position of Treasurer, which has been an appointive one for the last several years, will return to being an elective position in next year’s elections, giving the membership an increasing role in the task of selecting the Organization’s officers. While the onus of running our Organization rests on our elected and appointed leaders, it is also everyone’s responsibility to ensure that whoever runs should have proven their commitment and the heart to serve our Organization, rather than just a position to put in one’s resume. One of these important positions is that of the Board of Directors. This year, with the departure of three (3) members of the Board due to term limits, there are five (5) brethren who are vying for the two-year stint. Whoever wins will have the added responsibility of sifting through and reviewing our Constitution/ Bylaws and our Policies/Procedures Manual and putting forth suggestions on how better to improve our Organization’s services to each other and to the community. It will be interesting to hear the campaign speeches in the coming General Membership Meeting.
Last Friday, October 10, 2014, we held our first BOD-BOT meeting at Bro. Vic’s residence in Fontana. The general theme in the meeting agenda was to assess how the Board as a whole, have fared since its inception. While everyone acknowledged that it was too early to be able to come out with clear assessment, everyone was in agreement that it was better that we take small but sure baby steps instead of making giant leaps and bounds and ending up falling off a cliff. We had to literally go back to the basics, as far as recognizing what was the Vision and Mission when majority of the members agreed to be transform APO-GLA into a 501C3 Organization some 15 or so years back and at the same time, ensuring our compliance with the legal aspects of the IRS code. Whatever we all lacked in knowledge and expertise, was more than
exceeded by each one’s commitment to do their part in furthering the goals of being a Nonprofit Organization. In the last GMM, there were suggestions in the BOD to spin off the Nonprofit part into some sort of a foundation, separating it from the generally social and fraternal structure of APO-GLA. To this end, the BOT agreed to form a committee composed of brethren from both sides of the aisle - those in favor of and those who are not - to come out with a definitive stand on the possibility of creating a separate affiliate Organization to better conform with the legal aspects of such a status.
Lastly, last Saturday evening, October 11, 2014, a contingent of APO-GLA officers and members were guests during the Silver Jubilee celebrations of the Philippine Heritage Institute International. We were there at the invitation of Ms. Maria Sheets, our go-to person and strong advocate for our anticipated partnership with the City of Los Angeles in their community-oriented projects. Ms Sheets was honored with the Presidential Award for Outstanding Filipino-Americans in Community Service. Through her intercession, APO-GLA will, in the coming months, be meeting with key persons in the Mayor’s office to identify such projects, where APOGLA can volunteer our manpower services for the good of the community. All of these projects will have to be approved by the General membership and will be included in next year’s Calendar of Activities. All in all, it was rather a busy but fruitful week for APO-GLA.
In behalf of the Board, Bro. Eric Serrano

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP My Hol y Land Spiritual Experience: Holy MEETING ar THE JORD AN EXPERIENCE - P JORDAN Par artt 1 By Bro. Dan E. Nino, VP-Membership After six months of planning, our pilgrimage trip to the Holy land, (Israel Jordan and Palestine) came to fruition. Arranged by Adriatic Tours, we were determined to fly despite our apprehension due to the Israel-Gaza conflict a month earlier. Leaving Los Angeles on Sept. 10 at 7 p.m., we arrived in Istanbul, Turkey at 5:30 p.m. the next day for our stopover after a 12-hour flight onboard Turkish Airline -- flying over Canada and Europe. While waiting for our flight to Amman, Jordan, I browsed around the huge Istanbul airport teeming with people from all over the world and bought a book Ataturk, The Rebirth Of A Nation referring to Turkey’s founder Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. From the looks of it, Istanbul is the gateway to the world as travelers from Africa, Middle East, Europe and North America made their connecting flights to various destinations. We departed from Istanbul at almost 10 p.m.. and arrived in Amman, Jordan for our journey’s first leg at midnight. We were billeted at Warwick Hotel overlooking the Dead Sea. After only a few hours of sleep and a quick breakfast -- the 34 of us pilgrims -proceeded to Madaba and Mt. Nebo at 9 a.m. After lunch we travelled to Jerash, north of Amman. We learned many historical and biblical facts about Jordan from our tour Entrance to the Basilica in honor of prophet Moses guide and travel brochures handed to us. in Mt. Nebo Jordan, which was anciently called the Hashemite Kingdom of Transjordan is 90 percent desert land. I learned that this country doesn’t produce gas and oil. Its agricultural produce come from the Jordan Valley in the Northern part of the country where a river traverses. The government and its people thrive from its tourism industry. People everywhere sell souvenir goods. The Nomads or Bedouins can still be seen herding their flocks of donkey, sheep, goat and camel. I did not see that much greenery or grass but these animals seemed robust. Despite the sweltering heat and lack of running water nearby, I am just curious how they can survive the elements. The roads are well-paved amid the desert landscape with no service stations and rest area in between. You have to reach the next town or city to rest, relieve yourself or eat after a long stretch of highway. Jordan, a country of contrasts sits on a 92,300 square kilometers of desert land with only 329 sq. kms. of water and a coastline of 26 kilometers. Jordan east of Israel is bordered by the Dead Sea and Jordan Rover. It was ruled at one time by the Romans. With an upper middle class economy, Jordan’s population is only six million with ethnic Jordanians, Circassians and Armenians. Ninety two percent of Jordanians are Sunni Muslims with six percent Christians. Madaba, about two hours drive from our hotel in the outskirts of Amman is known for its mosaic industry as an art. The Greek Orthodox Church of St. George, is the site of Madaba’s oldest and most famous floor with a 6th century Byzantine Mosaic Map showing Jordanian, Jerusalem and other Holy sites.
N e a r Madaba is Mt. Nebo, where Moses was believed to have been buried. But his bones were never found. According to our tour guide, two angels exhumed his body and was transferred to With our pilgrim Chaplain Rev Fr. Joseph Hoang in another site near the front of the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George in Basilica now being Madaba, Jordan ( famous for Byzantine Mosaic Map) constructed to be opened this November. It was at Mt. Nebo where Moses had a glimpse of the Promised Land when he led his people out of Egypt but wandered in the desert for 40 years. The Israelites Roman ruin in the ancient city of Jerash, Jordan travelled around the desert but when they thought that they had reached the Promised Land, they were again at the point of origin. It was believed that because they disobeyed the commands of God and spurned him despite all the signs He performed, they grumbled against Him and were punished by not reaching the Promised Land. One wonders why the houses in Jordan are box-like with a flat concrete roof. The explanation was that in the Middle Eastern culture, the closely knit-family once married, stay under one roof. If an adult child got married, the patriarch of the house would build another floor for the newly-married couple to start a new life. After lunch, we travelled for about three hours Northwest to Jerash, a former Roman city, 48 kilometers north of Amman. Jerash, a closed second to Petra on the list of favorite destination in Jordan, is touted as one of the best-preserved Roman-era cities in the world. The Arabaized name of Jerash derived its original Roman name Garshu to “Gerasha” during Pompey’s era. A number of churches were built here during the time of Emperor Constantine when he converted Byzantine empire to Christianity. Roman civilization and architectural ruins are still visible in Jerash with amphitheater, chariot stadium for races in the Hippodrome, the Temple of Zeus, Corinthian columns and the Oval Plaza known as the Forum. These architectural ruins were knockdown during an earthquake. The Persians sacked Jerash in 614 AD and Muslims made an imprint in 636 AD after their victory. When the Crusaders arrived, they described it as uninhabited. Of course, owing to its rich historical past, Jerash is now vibrant and pulsating with commerce due to the influx of tourists. According to history it was “rediscovered by a German traveler Ulrich Jasper Seetzen and wrote an article that made it a world destination.

While the participants were so busy with the foods being provided, raffle draws ensued which brightened up the mood of all the passengers awaiting their ticket numbers to be called with the corresponding prizes. The raffle game was chaired by Sis Irma Almazan and Bro Geoffrey Arroyo. There was no dull moment indeed. Excitement, fun and joy was the feeling on the air during the raffle draws. Thirteen Sarong skirts, several fashion accessories and various surprise gifts were given away while we are on our way to Pechanga Resort & Casino. The raffle draw yielded $205.00 wherein the $105.00 was allocated for the Driver’s tip. As SOP, as soon as we reached Pechanga Resort & Casino, a hotel representative went up to our Bus#5062 and greeted us all and validated the necessary identification documents for each passengers as required by the Hotel Management. After the screening procedures, all passengers proceeded right away to the desk information to register and secure our Loyalty cards “The Club at Pechanga” however, the frequent players went directly to their favorite slot machines, etc. On the other hand, Bro/Pres. Jerome Paggao and Company trooped the Pechanga round bar and continued their fellowship and enjoyed the moment drinking their favorite alcoholic beverages. It’s a President’s gesture of saying advance farewell and Thank you to everyone. Some APGOLA member’s didn’t drink and gamble at Pechanga but just opted to enjoy the buffet lunch at the Casino Food section. They were just there to support the Buscapade 2 fund raising event. WOW! What a wonderful gesture and a huge sacrifice indeed! Also, it becomes a practice for some of our Buscapade participants to invest $20.00 for the “No Limit Poker Pool” under the tandem of Bro’s Geoffrey Arroyo and Beeboy Mansilla wherein we got a return of investment amounting to $60.00 each – We WON! Although some lost others had the privilege of Lady Luck. However, what mattered most was everybody enjoyed the trip. It’s unfair not to thank and acknowledge the generosity and all-out support of Co-Chair Buscapade & 1st ACNA VP/Sis Irma Almazan & Bro Alex Almazan, Bro/PP Jun Lisangan, Bro Jobee Jovellanos and our very own APOGLA Pres. Jerome Paggao. Also, we would like to say “Thank you so much” to the following (Foods & Drinks): Bro/PP Ferdie Yambot, Bro/PP Dony Rondilla, Bro/Auditor Armand Mendoza, Bro Geoffrey Arroyo & Sis Letty Esquivel; (Financial): Bro HoneyBoy Fajota, Bro Wilson Pascual, Sis Grace Arciaga and all the Bro’s & Sisters who made financial pledges (A/R) as well. These year’s Buscapade 1 & 2 to Pechanga Resort & Casino that were conducted last July 12, 2014 and September 27, 2014 respectively had been successful trips that both yielded an awesome combined Total Net Income of $2,349.48 (Buscapade 1 -$1,176.39 & Buscapade 2 - $1,173.09). Impossible becomes possible and we can always achieve and accomplish greater heights of any projects every time we commit, participate and keep getting involved. Thank you very much for all your support and cooperations. Mabuhay ang APOGLA, Mabuhay ang Alpha Phi Omega! by Bro Eddie “EdR” Romero, Buscapade Chairman 2014

GOINGS ON by Sis. Fely Montecillo
Everyone knows that the Buscapade is always bonding time. Allow me to thank Brod Ed Romero, Project Chairman, and Sis Irma Almazan, for the wonderful time we all had. Congratulations to the two of you for the well-organized BUSCAPADE. It was just FUNtastic! ********************* The Buscapade was also one good time for us to discuss with Brods and Sis different issues concerning the organization, our lives, present day politics etc. etc. This gave me time to have a tete-a-tete with Sis Irma Almazan for what’s new with ACNA. Sis Irma informed yours truly that ACNA has already approved her proposal for the organization to create a Disaster and Relief Coordinating Committee. She explained that the Philippines is always hit by natural calamities - typhoons causing catastrophic flooding, loss of lives and properties, earthquakes, erosion causing landslides. The Philippine government lacks the resources to timely action on such calamities. Comes now APO whose members are quick to respond to such calls for help. We always want to act immediately to such appeals. Yea, it is in our blood! Sis Irma however, feels that there is much room for improvement in the system of responding to such calamities. And this is the reason for the idea of the creation of the Disaster and Relief Coordinating Committee for ACNA. The functions of this committee will be as follows: A.) To create Policies and Procedures that would guide members in implementing the relief operations; B.) To implement an effective and orderly solicitation of funds for the relief operations; C) It will establish the best and efficient communication system for any disaster relief operation; D.) Identify, elect/select, the people or staff that would help before, during and after disasters or calamities; and E.) Create a Committee Disaster Organizational Chart that would identify the flow of activities before, during, and after relief operations. Sis Irma continues, since we are responding to calamities which are or would be taking place in the Philippines, the system should be executed and implemented there as perceived by the committee. As she explained this plan to me, I could see her determination in pushing this idea through and her keen belief that this move would make a positive change in relief operations, Good luck on this Sis Irma and always remember we are always behind you on any of your plans that aim to make a difference! ********************* And speaking of bonding, I had the pleasure of enjoying the company of visiting Sis Girlie de Ramos-Tagle who hails from Quezon. We had a grand time chatting, watching a movie, and sharing ideas. This was all made possible by the generosity of Sis Emma Galang who invited us to her residence - a sleepover of one night became two nights and we even wanted to extend it some more. The reality of responsibilities in the real world, however, restrained us from pursuing the idea. The sleepover was made more interesting when we were able to coax Brod Roehl (you know how difficult a task that is!) to make us taste once more his heavenly chami (a type of pancit). Ummmm! Can we have another one next time Brod? P-l-e-a-s-e! Going back to Sis Girlie, that was the first time I met her but we immediately clicked which set me into thinking that even though we vary in age, in our background we have one thing in common and that is SISTERHOOD. I bid you bon voyage on your trip back to the Phils. Don’t forget that you will be most welcome when you decide to come back. God bless! ********************* Election time is here! One wise writer once said, “Voting is as much an emotional act as it is an intellectual one.” To me then, it means we should vote with our hearts and our minds. Perfect! To the voters, let us be sure we choose the ones who are genuinely interested to serve and promote the best interest of our beloved APOGLA. To the ones elected, we expect nothing but the best from you. Congratulations!
