Man’s

Men & Masculinity!

world..

Men are simple creatures. It doesn’t take much to make them happy. While women worry about the brand name or stigma associated with a product or item, men are more concerned with the functionality and practicality of the things they own. It’s often easy to overlook the small, commonplace things that really make us happy. And in the grand scheme of things, it’s impossible to imagine life without these small pleasures. Here is an appreciative list of some of the things every man should have:

manlier than a big 4×4 vehicle. So let it snow, be it a muddy affair or the giant effing rocks, let’s go!

1. Work Boots Nothing screams rookie carpenter more than wearing busted-ass gym shoes on the construction site. Do your toes (and ego) a favor and get yourself a good pair of work boots.

17. Tailored Suit It’s always a good idea to have at least one (or more) tailored suits around. You never know when your next interview, swanky dinner date, wedding or funeral will be.

2. Tool Set A good set of tools is a must for any man. Knowing how to use them is another thing.

3. Man Cave Perhaps the most important room in your castle is the man cave. It’s the place you and your buddies disappear to when the game comes on so as to not be bothered by the squawking chickens.

18. Outdoor Fire Pit 9. Cigar Humidor On the golf course, at the bar, in your man cave or just chilling on your porch, a cigar is a great way to relax and enjoy the simple things in life.

Chilling next to the fire pit is one of the best things life has to offer. You don’t have to wait till the next time you go camping to smell like a campfire.

10. Golf Clubs

19. Work Bench

Golf is not only a great outdoor activity for exercise and comradery. It is also used to network and establish business relationships. Not to mention, it’s a legitimate excuse to get away from the missus and drink beer all day.

20. Old Leather Sofa

11. Poker and a Pool Table Poker nights are a must. And having some pool skills will make you one step closer to becoming a barroom hero.

12. Dog 4. Fishing Rod Even if you’re not an avid fisherman, it’s a good idea to have a fishing rod and some fishing gear. Sometimes it’s good to just get away and fishing is an excellent excuse.

A dog is loyal to the end. Also, dogs attract girls like crazy as it shows you can take care of a living, breathing organism without killing it.

13. Pair of Comfortable Jeans 5. Outdoor Grill Both propane and charcoal have their advantages. Nothing beats grilling out, no matter what the time of year. Make sure you invite your gang over to your barbecue session.

Enough with the skinny jeans already! If you can’t bend over without castrating yourself, your pants are too tight. Comfort is where it’s at. That being said, finding a pair of jeans that fit just right is where it’s at.

14. Mountain Bike Mountain biking is an excellent way to get your lazy butt off the couch and exercise. Also, with uncertain gas prices, it might be your best alternative for transportation.

15. Heavy Bag or Free Weights In order for you to float like a butterfly and sting like a bee, you gotta be in shape. An inanimate heavy bag and lifting free weights prison-style is all that you need.

6. Fully Stocked Bar It’s always nice to have a drink after work and nightcaps are a no-brainer if you have a good booze selection waiting for you at house.

7. Dependable Watch Although smart phones have virtually replaced every product in our lives, it’s good to have a reliable watch for a few reasons. Well, watches are a good fashion accessory and women notice them.

8. Comfortable Chair Nothing says “king of the castle” like having your very own designated comfy chair.

16. 4×4 Vehicle Your 4-banger hatchback might save you tons of cashola at the pump, but nothing is

Get yourself a sturdy work bench that will act as ground zero on your home renovation to-do list.

Perhaps the most comfortable thing on planet Earth is a beat-to-shit old leather sofa. A leather sofa, a fat cigar and a glass of scotch on the rocks is what takes your troubles away!

It used to be easy to be a man.. A man could express his manliness in occupations that only men could do, men had a role to fulfil that was clear and understood. But with the changing times, the roles between men and women have somewhat merged, making it harder to label a man’s trait. The ‘new man’ is supposed to be sensitive, caring and nurturing, all attributes traditionally associated with being a woman. Yet on average, males have much higher levels of testosterone making them more naturally suited to risk taking, competitiveness, physical activity and action. And to deny these masculine traits is to deny nature. A lot of woman talk about the merits of the ‘nice guy’ but are really more attracted to a man who displays traits traditionally associated with being a manly man - assertiveness, confidence, energy, incisiveness, determination, strength of mind and body, stamina, nobility, selfsacrifice and leadership. This doesn’t mean getting into fights or being ‘macho’, but about displaying the qualities of manliness at work, in relationships, in school or wherever in your life you need to ‘man up’. The top to Men’s Health and how to prevent them

7 ts

a e r h t Do you know the greatest threats to men’s health? The list is surprisingly short — and prevention pays off. Consider this list of men’s health threats which has been compiled from statistics provided by the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other leading organizations. Then get serious about reducing your risks. Here’s what you need to know to live a longer, healthier life.

1: Heart disease

t t t t t

also counts. Maintain a healthy weight. Lose excess pounds — and keep them off. Get moving. Physical activity on its own may lower the risk of certain types of cancer. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables; it may help reduce your risk. Protect yourself from the sun. Limit alcohol. The risk of various types of

Heart disease is a leading men’s health threat. Take charge of heart health by making healthier lifestyle choices. For example: t Don’t smoke. It’s also important to avoid exposure to second-hand smoke. t Eat a healthy diet. Choose vegetables, fruits, whole grains, high-fibre foods and lean sources of protein, such as fish. t Manage chronic conditions. If you have high cholesterol or high blood pressure, follow your doctor’s treatment recommendations. t Include physical activity in your daily routine. Choose sports or other activities you enjoy. t Maintain a healthy weight. t Limit alcohol intake. t Manage stress. Take steps to reduce stress — or learn to deal with stress in healthy ways.

2: Cancer Various types of cancer are of particular concern to men, including lung cancer, skin cancer, prostate cancer and colorectal cancer. To reduce the risk of cancer, consider these general tips: t Don’t smoke. Using any type of tobacco puts you on a collision course with cancer. Avoiding exposure to second-hand smoke

cancer — including cancer of the colon, lung, kidney and liver — increases with the amount of alcohol you drink and the length of time you’ve been drinking regularly.

t

Take early detection seriously. Consult your doctor for regular cancer screenings.

3: Accidents Motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of fatal accidents among men. To stay safe on the road, use common sense. Wear your seat belt. Follow the speed limit. Don’t drive under the influence of any intoxicants, and don’t drive while sleepy.

4: Chronic lower respiratory diseases Chronic lung conditions — which include bronchitis and emphysema — also are a concern for men. To protect your respiratory health: t Don’t smoke. t Steer clear of pollutants. Minimize exposure to chemicals and outdoor air pollution. t Prevent respiratory infections. Wash your hands often and get a yearly flu vaccine.

6: Type 2 diabetes

5: Stroke

7: Suicide

You can’t control some stroke risk factors — such as family history, age and race — but you can control other contributing factors. For example: t Manage chronic conditions. t Don’t smoke. t Make healthy lifestyle choices. Eat a healthy diet, being especially careful to limit foods high in saturated fat and cholesterol. t Include physical activity in your daily routine. t If you’re overweight, lose excess pounds. t Limit alcohol.

Suicide is another leading men’s health risk. An important risk factor for suicide among men is depression. If you have signs and symptoms of depression — such as depression and a loss of interest in normal activities — consult your doctor. Treatment is available. In conclusion, understanding health risks is one thing. Taking action to reduce your risks is another. Start with healthy lifestyle choices — eating a healthy diet, staying physically active, quitting smoking, getting regular check-ups and taking precautions in your daily activities. The impact may be greater than you’ll ever know.

Type 2 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes and affects the way your body uses blood sugar (glucose). Poorly controlled diabetes can lead to heart disease, eye problems, nerve damage and other complications. To prevent type 2 diabetes, get serious about your lifestyle choices. Eat a healthy diet. Include physical activity in your daily routine. If you’re overweight, lose excess pounds.

Fish for a Healthy Heart A new study has again confirmed that fish is heart-healthy. So what’s new about that? This study looked at how often fish was consumed, the types of fish and even how it was prepared. Data was collected from food questionnaires completed by 84,000 postmenopausal women. Here’s what the study found: Frequency. Women who ate five or more servings of baked or broiled fish a week had a 30 per cent lower risk of developing heart failure, compared with women who rarely or never ate fish. Preparation. Eating even one serving of fried fish a week was linked to a 48 per cent higher risk of heart failure. Frying fish increases trans fats, which researchers speculate may contribute to an increase in risk for heart disease. Lowfat cooking methods, such as baking, broiling, grilling, poaching and steaming, don’t produce this effect. Types of fish. Eating baked or broiled dark fish, such as salmon, mackerel and bluefish, was associated with a 22 per cent lower risk of heart

failure. That was not true for tuna and white fish, such as sole, snapper and cod. Omega-3 fatty acids. Researchers also looked at omega-3 intake from sources, such as fish oil supplements, vegetable oil and other plant products. They found no association between these omega-3 sources and heart failure risk. This suggests that whole fish — not just omega-3 — provided the protection from heart failure. The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend increasing the amount and variety of seafood in ones diet by choosing seafood in place of meat and poultry. So, increase your intake of fish especially salmon, mackerel and bluefish.

Simple tips for healthy fish recipes Salmon - Brush with maple syrup and grill. Top with zest of lime or lemon. Mackerel - Brush with a little olive oil and season with lemon pepper, then broil. Bluefish - Brush with mustard and bake.

How to choose the

Right Business Tie Most men today are self-conscious on how they look before they leave the house and especially how they present themselves at the office. Considering that business ties are now recognised as a man’s basic accessory, it is essential to understand the kind of business ties that work most for you. There is a wide choice of colours, lengths, designs, prints, etc. for business ties. Don’t make the mistake of grabbing and wearing any tie because there is much needed attention and detail required to complete your business attire and get the professional business look you are aiming for. t First of all before choosing your business tie you must have a suit so the rule of thumb is to pick out your suit first then accessorise (shirt, tie, cufflinks, etc.). A lot of men get overwhelmed with this step with so many different ties to choose from. Should I go safe with a solid colour, should I be creative and have a little fun and go with a print? Many fashion professionals recommend solids for interviews and important business meeting and say have a little fun around the office and go with a print or a fun design. You also want the business tie to reflect your personality and character. In that case you can make your business tie stand out by choosing a different design from the shirt. t When selecting a business tie make sure the length and width are standard. It’s important in accomplishing the suitable look. A lot of men make the mistake of adjusting their business ties too short or very long. The wide part of the business tie should touch the man’s trouser where it covers up the trouser’s buttons. The

narrow part should be above that point. This would be the proper length to wear your business tie. t The width of the business tie should suit the man’s build. Those bold business ties with patterns and the bigger knots are better suited for those with a larger build. t Ties come in the standard size of 57 inches. For those taller men 60 inches. The basic width for ties is 3.75 inches. You always want to make sure you choose a fitted tie no matter the style, colour, print, or design so do your homework and visit different department stores/boutiques for assistance on measurements. This will also give you an opportunity to see the latest collections and styles of ties that will suit the look you are trying to accomplish and selecting the perfect business tie that suits your personality. t You should avoid tucking in the narrow part of the business tie in the label behind the wide part. This label was not intended for that purpose and doing so will restrict the natural flow of the tie. t The preferred knot for a business tie is the Double Windsor knot. This fuller knot is most suitable for the business look. Take some time to master the art of creating Double Windsor knot. There are many helpful videos on creating this knot. Just try and remember these basics steps when selecting your next business tie. This will help you achieve the business look you desire!

Asking a woman out on a date You’ve asked your friends how to do it, you asked your dad how he did it and you even asked your uncle. No strategy seems good enough. Men who shaped

the world Vinodh K. Pisharom

Aristotle

My male chauvinist friends were mad at me for maintaining, in an earlier article, that women are better than men. Though the article was much appreciated, some men alleged a flirtatious intent on my part to please some females who had caught my fancy. It’s not that I wanted to prick the male ego, but literature was littered with studies that suggested women are superior to men physically, mentally and evolutionarily, that I had to exert myself to write in conformance. Nevertheless, I always harboured a hope that someday I would come across some revealing material to show off the manliness of menfolk. Thankfully, I didn’t have to wait for long to bring an end to the longing. The world we live in today would no doubt be a different place if it weren’t for the amazing discoveries made by famous scientists of the bygone and recent times. Driven by the mother of all inventions, ‘necessity’, most of

English mathematician Charles Babbage designed a mechanical computing machine called the analytical engine. It is considered ed

Alfred Nobel (1833 – 1896) Alfred Bernhard Nobel was a Swedish chemist, engineer, innovator, and armaments manufacturer. He is the man behind Nobel Prize, which is to honour men and women from all corners of the globe for outstanding achievements in physics, chemistry, medicine, literature, and for work in peace. Ironically, he is also the inventor of dynamite, cannon and other armaments. Thomas Alva Edison (1847 – 1931) Thomas Alva Edison was an American inventor and businessman. In his lifetime, Edison patented 1,093 inventions, earning him the nickname “The Wizard of Menlo Park.” The most famous of his inventions was an incandescent light bulb. Besides the light bulb, Edison developed the phonograph and the “kinetoscope,” a small box for viewing moving films. He believed in hard work, sometimes working twenty hours a day. Edison was quoted as saying, “Genius is one percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration.” Graham Bell (1847 – 1922) Alexander Graham Bell was an eminent scientist, inventor, engineer and innovator who is credited with inventing the first practical telephone. Many other inventions marked Bell’s later life, including ground-breaking work in optical telecommunications, hydrofoils and aaeronautics. eronautics.

Aristotle (384 BC – 322 BC) A Greek philosopher and polymath, considered as one of the greatest philosophers off all times. He wrote on many subjects includingg physics, biology, zoology, botany, mathematics, metaphysics, logic, politics, poetry, theatre, linguistics, ethics etc. Aristotle radicallyy transformed most, if not all, areas of knowledge he touched, and it is no wonder that he if often referred to as “The Philosopher.” As the fatherr of the field of logic, he was the first to develop a formalised system for reasoning. Aristotle’s emphasis on good reasoning combined with his belief in the scientific method forms the backdrop for most of his work. Archimedes (287 BC – 212 BC) Archimedes of Syracuse was a Greekk mathematician, physicist, engineer, inventor, and astronomer. Archimedes formulated the w Archimedes’ principle of buoyancy and the law of the lever. Legend has it that Archimedes discovered his principle of buoyancy, which states that the buoyancy force is equal to the weight of the liquid displaced, while taking a bath, upon which he is supposed to have run naked through the streets of Syracuse shoutingg “Eureka!” (I have found it). Archimedes is also purported to have invented the Archimedean screw. Galileo Galilei (1564 – 1642) Galileo Galilei was an Italian physicist, mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher who played a key role in the history of science and philosophy was considered a central figure in the scientific revolution of the 17th century. He formulated the basic law of falling bodies, which he verified by careful measurements. He constructed a telescope with which he studied lunar craters, and discovered four moons revolving around Jupiter and espoused the Copernican cause. Isaac Newton (1642 – 1727) Newton was an English physicist and mathematician, and one of the greatest scientists of his era. Isaac Newton explained the workings of the universe through mathematics. He formulated laws of motion and gravitation. These laws are math formulas that explain how objects move when a force acts on them. When people think of Isaac Newton, they think of him sitting under an apple tree observing an apple fall to the ground, which made him state that gravity was the force of attraction between two objects.

the scientists are found to have dedicated their life and efforts on research and experiments, making a huge difference in the world of science with their priceless contributions. From Aristotle, Archimedes, Newton, Benjamin Franklin, Faraday, Nobel, Edison, Bell, Einstein, Wright brothers, Philo Farnsworth, Fleming, Tim Berners Lee to Mark Zuckerberg of the Facebook fame, the endless list was a real eye-opener as well as an ego booster, as all of them turned out to be men. Can you imagine a world without electricity, railroads, automobiles, airplanes, radio, television, telephone, computers, household appliances, internet, email, social networking etc.? If you dread even to think of such a lifeless, isolated and miserable existence, the contributions off these men to mankind, and numerous fields of science, shall leave us eternally indebted to them. Some of the men who shaped the world are as follows:

Benjamin Franklin, one of America’s greatest citizens, was famous as a scientist, an inventor, a statesman, a printer, a philosopher, a musician, and an economist. He invented a heat-efficient stove, called the Franklin stove, to help warm houses efficiently. Among Franklin’s other inventions are swim fins, the glass harmonica (a musical instrument) and bifocals. In the early 1750’s he turned to the study of electricity. His observations, including his kite experiment which verified the nature of electricity and lightning brought Franklin international fame. Michael Faraday (1791 – 1867) Michael Faraday, an English chemist and physicist was one of the greatest scientists who contributed to the fields of electromagnetism and electrochemistry. His concepts on electromagnetic induction, diamagnetism and laws of electrolysis are yet to be disproved. His inventions of electromagnetic rotary devices formed the foundation of electric motor technology, and it was largely due to his efforts that electricity became viable for use in technology. Charles Babbage (1792 – 1891)

the forerunner of the digital computer, a programmable electronic device that stores, retrieves, and processes data. Charles Darwin (1809 -1882) Darwin is the first of the evolutionary biologists, the originator of the concept of natural selection. His principal works, The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection (1859) and The Descent of Man (1871) marked a new epoch. His works were violently attacked and energetically defended, then; and, it seems, yet today. Louis Pasteur (1822 – 1895) Louis Pasteur was a French chemist and microbiologist, remembered for his remarkable breakthroughs in the causes and preventions of diseases. He proved the germ theory of disease and invented the process of pasteurization. Pasteur extended his theory to explain the causes of many diseases - including anthrax, cholera, TB and smallpox - and their prevention by vaccination. He is best known for his work on the development of vaccines for rabies.

Wilbur Wright (1867 – 1912) & Orville Wright (1871 – 1948) The Wright Brothers invented and flew the first powered and piloted airplane. The American brothers developed their flying machine into the first practical fixed-wing aircraft. Although not the first to build and fly experimental aircraft, the Wright brothers were the first to invent aircraft controls that made fixed-wing powered flight possible. Albert Einstein (1879 – 1955) Einstein, a German-born theoretical physicist, is often regarded as the father of modern physics and one of the most prolific intellects in human history. He revolutionised the world of physics with his general theory of relativity. He received the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics for his services to theoretical physics, especially for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect, the latter being pivotal in establishing quantum theory within physics. Einstein published more than 300 scientific papers along with over 150 non-scientific works. His great intelligence and originality have made the word “Einstein” synonymous with genius.

Philo Farnsworth (1906 – 1971) Philo Taylor Farnsworth was an American inventor and television pioneer. Philo Farnsworth conceived the world’s first allelectronic television at the age of 15. By the time he died, he had earned over 300 US and foreign patents for electronic and mechanical devices. In 1927, Philo Farnsworth became the first inventor to transmit a television image comprised of 60 horizontal lines. The image transmitted was a dollar sign. Farnsworth developed the dissector tube, the basis of all current electronic televisions. Martin Cooper (1928) Dr. Martin Cooper of Motorola is considered to be the inventor of the first practical mobile phone. On April 3, 1973, Martin placed a call to rival Joel Engel, head of research at AT&T’s Bell Labs, while walking the streets of New York City talking on the first Motorola DynaTAC prototype. Leonard Kleinrock, J.C.R. Licklider, Larry G. Roberts, Bob Kahn and Vint Cerf, Radia Perlman No one person invented the Internet as we know it today. However, certain major figures mentioned above contributed to major breakthroughs towards the development of Internet. Tim Berners-Lee (1955) Sir Timothy John “Tim” Berners-Lee, is a British computer scientist, MIT professor and the inventor of the World Wide Web (www), with the help of Robert Cailliau and a young student at CERN, he implemented the first successful communication between a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) client and server via the Internet. As the list of scientists goes on and on, one interesting fact which comes forth is that almost all of them are men. Looking into the Arabic connection, it was found that Algebra was invented by the mathematician AlKhwarizmi. Algebra is the Arabic word (aljabr) for “equation”, and the word “algorithm” comes from the author’s name, Al-Khwarizmi. He is rightly known as “the father of Algebra”. In consolation, women may have the pleasure to claim that a French woman, Herminie Cadolle, is “the mother of ‘Bra’, for being inventor of the modern bra and founder of the Cadolle lingerie house.

10 ways to give your appearance a boost Looking good and projecting the confidence that comes from it will get you noticed by people. Use a mirror to check regularly if your look needs any adjustments. This just takes you a few seconds and it will surely add to your look. These tips will certainly help you create a lasting impression with your suave self.

Close shave Shave regularly to look your best. If you sport a beard or a moustache or a French beard, then make sure it is trimmed neatly and has no stray hairs sticking out in multiple directions. Also make sure that you shave in the same direction as the growth of the hair and that you soften your facial hair before shaving it.

However much you protest, it cannot be denied that people instantly judge you based on how you look. You could be a successful professional raking in the moolah and having recently acquired a swanky car, but if you are dressed shabbily with food stains on your clothes and with two days’ growth of stubble on your face, then you will be judged accordingly. We’re here to make sure that never happens to you! Read on and get a grip h o w p on to make a great at first impression.

Good physique A healthy body does it for you. If you take care of your body, it’s half the job already done when it comes to making a good impression. Eat regular and balanced meals and get your share of physical exercise. Smoking and drinking should be occasional. Staying healthy and fit will go a long way in making you a person with a significant presence and who is sure to make a lasting first impression.

Pamper your skin To ensure that your skin is glowing, drink at least two litres of water a day. It takes time in getting used to but does wonders for your complexion. Get enough sleep so that you don’t have puffy eyes, and also moisturise regularly to keep your skin nourished. Also use a lip balm regularly to keep your lips moisturised and smooth. Chapped lips will never get you anywhere with that girl you like.

Get in the shower

Keep your hands clean

The basic step to staying clean and smelling good even without any cologne. This is a step you are not allowed to miss because it’s as simple as water, shower and towel. So whether you’ve just come back from the gym, woken up, or are going for a party shower!

Women notice nice hands and hands play a makeor-break role in business meetings because of the importance of a handshake. Cut and file your nails regularly and also make sure that they don’t have any residue of food or dirt stuck in them. Wash your hands frequently and especially after a meal because smelly and sweaty hands are the biggest turn off.

Don’t be shaggy Since hair grows regularly, you have to always keep a check on when your ear, nose, chest hair needs a trim. It’s best to trim hair from these parts at least once a week. Also shampoo and condition your hair everyday. Never let your hair look greasy and straggly.

Sense of style Clothes that fit well, and which are clean, neatly ironed and smell good are very important. The fit also is very important to looking good. It’s no use wearing expensive shirts and branded trousers if you’ve got the fit wrong. People will only notice that your clothes are hanging on you or alternatively, are too tight for you.

Maintain Posture Posture is very important. Do not slouch and always walk straight because it projects confidence and assertiveness in a man. If you have trouble with maintaining your posture, do some posture exercises regularly till you get it right.

Shiny shoes Smell good Don’t go overboard and douse yourself with strong smelling perfume after using strong smelling toiletries, but pick one cologne and stick with it. Don’t use different smelling soaps, lotions and then apply cologne because the scents could mix badly resulting in a weird smelling mish-mash on you.

Men are judged by their shoes. If you are wearing formal shoes, make sure they’re not scuffed and dirty. They should be polished and shiny. Casual shoes should also be clean and avoid tattered shoes at all costs!

Spring Summer Collection 2012 HUGO BOSS clothing for men is characterised by its premium quality and its timeless and elegant style. Monotone hues and sleek sophisticated garments are the basis for the latest HUGO by HUGO BOSS Spring/Summer 2012 Campaign. The campaign features classic, well cut tailored garments which look effortlessly chic due to minimal styling and almost no accessories – allowing the range to really speak for itself. The focus remains on the clothing, with emphasis being placed on fit rather than use of colour and patterns.

The new collection is centred around timeless pieces that will ll r r, have you looking sleek and refined season after season. However, a these classic styles have all been given a contemporary twist via unconventional detailing or fabric choices. For example, the key ‘must have’ pieces for men are without a doubtt the gorgeous double breasted blazer (two buttons instead of 4-6),, bomber jacket (perforated material) and Derby shoes (completee with contrasting coloured soled). r. This campaign has proved to be one of the favourites so far this year. The combination of excellent photography and an almost vintagee rockabilly styling have come together wonderfully.
