MARCHESA Fall Winter 2016 - 2017 Ready to Wear

At Marchesa all women are queens. The magical world of Marchesa is composed of precious stones, beads, feathers, laser-cut flowers, silk, tulle, organza, printed and baroque royal shades (bronze, powder pink, yellow, royal blue, silver, black and red).

6

From the very beginning of the show that bejeweled illusion dress with multiple flowers and leaves mixed with each other was an allusion to some female drama, which got intensified even more when a model appeared teary-eyed donning a sophisticated floor-sweeping shimmering dress, the bodice of which was all encrusted with bejeweled flowers. The silhouettes of the red-carpet-worthy gowns were running the gamut including floor-sweeping full skirts and pencil shapes, midi lengths and mini silhouettes, high-low versions and а great deal of froufrou numbers with some smoky déjà vu

Recent jewelry trends have skewed

minimal with delicate bands, teeny-tiny studs, and nondescript skinny cuffs reigning supreme. But you won't find any of that among the recent collections. Earrings got the dramatic treatment for spring/ summer 2016.

At Prada, designer Miuccia Prada adorned each model's lobes with head-turning embellished orbs that looked like disco ball ornaments. But that wasn't the first instance of statement pairs on the runway—there were cool sculptural sets at Rosie Assoulin, long chain links at Alexander Wang, tassels at Oscar de la Renta, shoulder-grazing jewels at Gucci, and an edgy silver pair at Emilio Pucci.

When Christian Louboutin meets Jaeger-LeCoultre

I

t is the kind of encounter rarely experienced in the life of two such Maisons. The paths of Christian Louboutin and the Manufacture Jaeger-LeCoultre have crossed to stunning effect in a brilliantly fanciful collaborative endeavour. These two apparently very separate worlds in truth share the same vision of excellence founded on the precision and virtuosity of their craftsmanship, along with a taste for fashioning materials, constant attention to detail, and a quest for perfect balance. The collaboration between Jaeger-LeCoultre and Christian Louboutin is also rooted in sharing creative approaches, and a sense of openness offering new perspectives on the world. These two Maisons with their respective iconic creations harbour great mutual respect and admiration. They are now placing their joint signature on an unexpected Reverso collection that will mark their history.

Pastel Vibes at Georges Hobeika's accessories Lebanese fashion designer, Georges Hobeika, presented quite a beautiful collection of dresses, crop tops and pants for his Haute Couture Spring 2016 show. The color palette at George Hobeika's Haute Couture Spring 2016 consisted of pastels, and everything looked just so ethereal and feminine. Georges Hobeika presented very fine cuts that truly captured the essence of an elegant woman. He also used accessories in a very attentiongrabbing way, from embellished belts to flat shoes.

A Note From

MARC

This collection is a celebration of all that is present irrespective of its place in time. I have always found comfort in the familiar and the frequent return to the things that move me visually, emotionally and intellectually. It is an acknowledgment of moments past – now so digitally present – and a consideration of the innumerable moments captured in the fleeting now. During the designing of this collection, I often found myself overwhelmed by the sheer volume of visual stimulation and the wonderful memories of days gone. As I explored the online archive of all the imagery that inspires others , it reinforced my belief in the power and importance of visual language, the beauty of individual style, imagination, creativity, instinct and feeling.

SKIN CARE

Boost your cleansing routine

DOUBLE-CLEANSING, A JAPANESE METHOD DATING BACK CENTURIES, INVOLVES USING TWO DIFFERENT CLEANSERS: THE FIRST REMOVES THE TOP LAYER OF MAKEUP AND GRIME; THE SECOND GETS YOUR SKIN SQUEAKY CLEAN. BUT YOU CAN'T JUST GRAB ANY OLD CLEANSERS AND LATHER UP TWICE. THERE'S A METHOD TO DOUBLE-CLEANSING THAT WILL GIVE YOU RADIANT, GLOWING SKIN. (BONUS: DOUBLE-CLEANSING HELPS YOUR SERUMS AND NIGHT CREAMS PENETRATE YOUR SKIN BETTER.)

Warm It Up: Rinse the oilbased cleanser off your face with warm but not hot water. If your water is too hot, it can dry out and irritate your skin.

STEP 4

Get Oiled Up: Start with an oil cleanser and a dry face. Be sure to pick cleansing oil with goodfor-skin ingredients, like nourishing coconut and argan oils, which you can find in Burt's Bees Facial Cleansing Oil. Use dry hands (if your hands are wet the oil will emulsify -- you don't want that to happen just yet) to massage the oil over your face, including your eyes. The oil is super effective and ultra-gentle at removing makeup and any dirt or debris that has accumulated on your face throughout the day.

STEP 3

Wash Your Hands: Think of all the germy things your hands have touched in just the last hour. Now, think about pressing all those germs onto your face and eyes. Yuck. You want to start with clean, dry hands so you don't introduce acne- and sickness-causing bacteria to your face.

STEP 2

STEP 1

Everything You Need to Know About Double Cleansing FOR MANY OF US, SIMPLY WASHING OUR FACE AT THE END OF A LONG, BUSY DAY SEEMS LIKE A FEAT WORTH CELEBRATING. WELL, GET READY TO BUST OUT THE BUBBLY, BECAUSE IT'S TIME TO START WASHING YOUR FACE TWICE.

Time for Round Two: Wash your face again, this time with a cleanser formulated for your skin type. A general rule of thumb: Dry and sensitive skin types fare best with creamy cleansers. Those with oily skin should look for a cleanser that balances oil levels without stripping skin of essential moisture, like a gentle foaming cleanser.

HAIR

Quick Hairstyles for Busy Moms Braids

Being a working mom, braids are definitely your best friends. Not only to do they require almost no effort to make, but they can look really chic and will usually last an entire day, if not more. Both French braids and regular braids work wonders to keep your hair in place. And to spice up the look in a jiffy, all you have to do is tie a small ribbon at the bottom.

Blunt Cut

This is, by far, one of the most hassle-free haircuts for working moms. The blunt cut is one of the coolest yet easy and quick hairstyles to execute, needing little or no maintenance. All you need is a curling iron and you’re good to attend even an elegant soiree. However, the most important thing to remember is that the cut must be done right. So, choose the right stylist who doesn’t just know how to cut a blunt, but also how to do it taking your hair texture and its characteristics into consideration. Best suited for straight hair.

Layers

Layers are super quick hairstyles, which are pretty simple to execute but still absolutely stunning to look at. Long at the back and short in front; that’s how you want to wear your layered hairstyle. Why? Because doing so will truly accentuate your jaw line while drawing attention to your eyes and that beautiful smile. And now for the icing on the cake; layers are your best bet if you want to create the illusion and give off the impression of voluminous hair.

20

At any given point of the day, moms can be seen multi-tasking. Juggling between professional and personal commitments, they just about manage to strike the perfect balance. Which is why, the last thing they need are hairstyles that take time and effort. We believe that you, the supermom, deserves to look every bit as super as you actually are. And while time is always running out on you, we want you to run out of the door every morning with stunning looking hair, no less. Does it seem like wishful thinking? Well, it’s not anymore. That’s because not everyone knows this but not all fabulous hairstyles take time to set. And these 3 easy hairstyles would seem, were created just for busy moms to help make their lives a little less stressful without compromising on any oomph factor.

NUITRITION

Vitamin D:

The nutrient you need now Find out how to get more diseasefighting, fatigue-banishing vitamin D - without exposing yourself to the sun's nasty rays A few years ago, vitamin D was nothing more than calcium's wingman - a secondary nutrient that helped the bone-building mineral make its move from the belly to the bloodstream and eventually plant itself in the skeleton. Well, no offence to C, but new research suggests that vitamin D may actually be the biggest nutritional superhero of all. Those men in white coats have uncovered up to 2000 different genes - roughly one-sixth of the human genome - that are regulated by this nutrient. That means almost everything your body does relies on it. "[Vitamin D] affects cell death and proliferation, insulin production and even the immune system," says Dr Michael Holick, director of the Vitamin D, Skin and Bone research laboratory at the Boston University Medical Center, US. without enough vitamin D, your body works far below its potential. And you're probably not getting anywhere near enough. Here's how you can score what you need to make your body function at its absolute max.

Nutrition's new golden child

What's most remarkable about D is the sheer number of health issues it's been linked to. In the past few years, studies have shown that a lack of the vitamin may be a contributor to depression, heart disease, pregnancy problems, birth defects, skin and other cancers, and multiple sclerosis. A study in the Journal of Nutrition even linked bacterial vaginosis - the most common vaginal infection in women -

to vitamin D deficiency. But even if you don't suffer from the above-mentioned conditions, getting more D may still be what the doctor ordered. "Many of my patients report a dramatic improvement in their feeling of overall wellbeing after they increase their vitamin D levels," Dr Holick says. A recent study by the University of Minnesota, US, linked increased intakes of vitamin D to improved weight loss in overweight men and women following a kilojoule-restricted diet.

Why we're D-ficient

According to Professor Terry Diamond, an endocrinologist from Sydney's St George Hospital, emerging evidence suggests 60 to 70 per cent of Aussies have deficient or insufficient levels of Vitamin D (deficient is defined as having blood levels of less than 30 nanograms per millilitre). So why do we come up so short, especially since vitamin D is one of the few vitamins our bodies can actually make? Sunlight converts a cholesterollike substance naturally found in the skin into D. Problem is, thanks to UV rays, soaking up sun to make more D would do you more harm than good. According to Osteoporosis Australia, to get enough sunlight to produce vitamin D, you need to expose your hands, face and arms (around 15 per cent of your body surface) to sunlight for about six to eight minutes, four to six times per week before 10am or after 2pm Standard Time in summer. For moderately fair people, this produces about 1000 IU (25mcg) of Vitamin D. Dark-skinned people need longer, as the melanin in dark skin decreases D

production by up to 90 per cent. In this case, for your skin to make enough vitamin D, you'd need direct midday summer sunlight on a huge portion of your body for 15 minutes a day, and the cancerous effects of sunlight at that time outweigh any benefits from vitamin D production. To make matters worse, D is missing from the food we eat, says Beth Kitchin, assistant professor of nutrition sciences in the Osteoporosis Treatment and Prevention Clinic at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, US. Only certain kinds of fish and fortified milk and margarine have enough D to brag about, and it would be hard to consume enough of both in one day to get 1000-plus IU (25mcg).

Easy to swallow

There's an easy way to get your vitamin D levels up without baking in the sun. It's not often that nutrition experts say it's better to get a vitamin from a pill than from food, but D is an exception. In this case, supplements are the easiest, cheapest and safest way to make sure you're covered.

Where the D be

It's hard to get the vitamin D you need solely from food, but these eats are some of the best sources of this vital nutrient. Dig in... • Salmon, canned in water, drained: 1mcg per 100g • Tuna, canned in oil, drained: 2.1mcg per 100g • Tuna, canned in water or brine, drained: 1mcg per 100g • Egg: 0.8mcg per 100g (2 eggs)

A Brand New with

IDKATAR

A

ll of us have had experience with dentists, good or bad; and these experiences have shaped the way we take care and maintain our teeth. When a problem occurs, we are all faced with the same dilemma: Where do I go? Who do I see? Can I trust my dentist? Does he have my interest in mind when devising my treatment? All these question and doubts make us anxious and will end up delaying our treatment which can create even more complications when finally deciding to call our Dentist! But all is not lost, I have found a Dental Center in Qatar that will answer all your questions, doubts and more; IDKATAR Dental Center.

22

IDKATAR Dental Center was opened in June 2015 and is a nest for distinguished and qualified Qatari Consultants that work as a team in order to come up with the best treatment plan for their patients. Ethics and professionalism are the best words to describe these Doctors. They will give you advices, suggestions and explanations on the treatment they will provide, allowing you to take your decision regarding your dental care. While writing my article, I had the pleasure of meeting three of these consultants and each of them was a revelation in their own field. Dr. Ahmad Al Hammadi, Consultant Endodontist, handles what he refers to in laments term as ‘root canal therapy’. Dr. Ahmad, as they call him here, obtained his postgraduate Master degree in Odontology and a fellowship in Endodontic Microsurgery from Karolinska institute in Sweden. He then joined Hamad Medical Corporation in 1998 and is a co-founder of IDKATAR Dental center. Often faced with challenging cases, he says: “Extraction is an extreme procedure that should not be taken lightly because most of the time another solution is available! Once a tooth has been extracted, the patient’s options become greatly reduced and require more expensive care. Better try to save the tooth than remove it all together!” Though as I understand, if you have the right technique, brushing your teeth 2-3 times a day and maintaining an overall good oral hygiene, you should not need root canal treatment. However, you might have healthy teeth and be looking for a Dentist to enhance

your smile. IDKATAR has Two Orthodontic Consultants ready to give you the smile you’ve always wanted. Dr. Mohamed Al-Olayyan, Consultant Orthodontist said to me: “we tend to focus on the patient’s smile and face as a whole instead of just focusing on minor teeth problems.” Dr. Mohamed studied at the Royal College of surgeons of Edinburgh where he graduated with two Master degrees, one in orthodontics and the other in Health Care Management. He is currently a member of the Supreme Health Council of Bahrain. Passionate about his field, Dr. Mohamed comes every Saturday from Bahrain to share his skills. Last but not least, the newest addition to the IDKATAR Dental Center team, Dr. Shaymaa Abdulreda Ali, Consultant Orthodontist adds: “Orthodontic treatment is not only considered a cosmetic field, but it is also a healthrelated-field,” she specifies: “when Orthodontically correcting teeth, we enhance esthetics along with treating medical complications such as impaired speech, ‘mouth breathing’ as well as correcting the jaw to balance facial features.” Dr. Shaymaa holds her Master degree from the University of Edinburgh, is a Fellow of the Royal College of surgeons of Edinburgh and has been working for the Hamad Medical Corporation since 2000. These are a few of the treatments you can get at IDKATAR Dental Center. Call, Email, Inquire! IDKATAR Dental Center provides treatment in all fields of dentistry!

Ten factors that can affect blood pressure reading

Have you ever visited the doctor's office and discovered your blood pressure was higher than you expected? Most people do not realize their blood pressure is constantly changing minute by minute in response to mood, activity, body position, and other numerous aspects. In fact, simple changes can cause blood pressure to fluctuate between 5 and 40 mmHg. Below is a list of 10 factors that can temporarily cause significant deviations in your blood pressure measurements.

1

Blood Pressure Cuff is too Small - It is extremely important to make sure the proper size blood pressure cuff is used on your upper arm when taking a measurement. Studies have shown that using too small of a blood pressure cuff can cause a patient's systolic blood pressure measurement to increase 10 to 40 mmHg.

2 3 4 5

Blood Pressure Cuff Used Over Clothing- When having your blood pressure measured, the cuff should always be placed directly on your arm. Studies have shown that clothing can impact a systolic blood pressure from 10 to 50 mmHg. Not Resting 3-5 minutesTo obtain an accurate blood pressure measurement, it is important that you relax and rest quietly in a comfortable chair for 3 to 5 minutes before a reading is taken. Any activities such as exercise or eating can affect your systolic blood pressure measurement. Arm/Back/Feet Unsupported - When having your blood pressure measured, you should always be seated in a comfortable chair, legs uncrossed, with your back and arm supported. If you tend to sit otherwise, this can lead to a slight increase/decrease of your systolic blood pressure reading. Emotional State- Stress or anxiety can cause large increases in blood pressure. If you are having your blood pressure taken while thinking

26

about something that causes you to tense up or become stressed, your blood pressure levels could significantly increase.

6 7 8 9 10

Talking - If you are talking to the nurse/doctor while having your blood pressure taken, studies have shown that your systolic blood pressure measurement may increase 10 to 15mmHg. Smoking- Tobacco products (cigarettes, cigars, smokeless tobacco) all contain nicotine which will temporarily increase your blood pressure, so refrain from smoking at least 30 minutes before having a blood pressure measurement taken. Caffeine - caffeine (sodas, coffee, tea‌) consumption causes blood pressure levels to spike so stay away from caffeine at least 30 minutes before having a blood pressure measurement taken. Temperature - Blood pressure tends to increase when you are cold. Therefore, if you are at the doctor's office and the room temperature is "chilly" to you, be aware that your blood pressure readings may be higher than expected. Full bladder - Your blood pressure is lower when your bladder is empty. As your bladder gradually fills, your blood pressure increases. Studies have shown that your systolic blood pressure measurements could increase 10 to 15mmHg when you have a full bladder.

T

he relationship between exercise and cancer has long both intrigued and puzzled oncologists and exercise physiologists. Exercise is strongly associated with lowered risks for many types of cancer. In epidemiological studies, people who regularly exercise generally prove to be much less likely to develop or die from the disease than people who do not. At the same time, exercise involves biological stress, which typically leads to a shortterm increase in inflammation throughout the body. Inflammation can contribute to elevated risks for many cancers. Now, a new study in mice may offer some clues into the exercise-cancer paradox. It suggests that exercise may change how the immune system deals with cancer by boosting adrenaline, certain immune cells and other chemicals that, together, can reduce the severity of cancer or fight it off altogether. To try to better understand how exercise can both elevate inflammation and simultaneously protect the body against cancer, scientists at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark and other institutions decided to closely examine what happens inside mice at high risk for the disease. So, for the new study, which was published this month in Cell Metabolism, they began

FITNESS

How Exercise May Lower Cancer Risk

by gathering a group of adult lab mice. These animals generally like to run. The scientists then implanted melanoma skin cancer cells into the mice before providing half of them with running wheels in their cages while the other animals remained sedentary. After four weeks, far fewer of the runners had developed full-blown melanoma than the sedentary mice, and those that had been diagnosed with the disease showed fewer and smaller lesions. They also were less prone to metastases, even if scientists injected some of the cancer cells into their lungs to stimulate metastases. In effect, running seemed to have at least partially inoculated the mice against the cancer. Next, the scientists undertook the far more challenging task of reverseengineering the process by which exercise might be helping to fight off the tumors. To start, they drew blood from both the exercising and sedentary animals and cells from any tumors in both groups. Then they looked microscopically at how the various samples were different. As expected, they found much higher levels of the hormone adrenaline in the blood of the exercising animals, especially right after they had been working out on the wheels but also at other times of the day. The body releases adrenaline in response to almost any type of stressful experience, including exercise.

PARENTING

28

As a parent, you probably wouldn't use old-school phrases like "Wait until your father gets home" or "I wish you were more like your sister" with your kids. However, there are lots of less obvious ones that you should avoid, for their sake and yours.

THINGS you should never say TO YOUR KIDS

1 2 3 4 5

"GREAT JOB"

Save the cheers for when they're truly necessary, and be as specific as you can. Instead of "Super game," say, "That was a nice assist. I like how you looked for your teammate."

"PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT"

It's true that the more time your child devotes, the sharper his skills will become. Instead, encourage your child to work hard because he'll improve and feel proud of his progress.

"YOU'RE OKAY"

When your child scrapes his knee and bursts into tears, your instinct may be to reassure him that he's not badly hurt. Try giving him a hug and acknowledging what he's feeling by saying something like, "That was a scary fall." Then ask whether he'd like a bandage or a kiss.

"HURRY UP!"

Soften your tone slightly by saying, "Let's hurry," which sends the message that the two of you are on the same team. You can also turn the act of getting ready into a game: "Why don't we race to see who can get her pants on first?"

"I'M ON A DIET"

It's better to say, "I'm eating healthy because I like the way it makes me feel." Take the same tack with working out. "I need to exercise" can sound like a complaint, but "It's beautiful outside -- I'm going to take a walk" may inspire her to join you.

6 7

"WE CAN'T AFFORD THAT"

Choose an alternative way to convey the same idea, such as, "We're not going to buy that because we're saving our money for more important things."

"DON'T TALK TO STRANGERS"

Instead of warning her about strangers, bring up scenarios, "What would you do if a man you don't know offers you candy and a ride home?", have her explain what she'd do, then guide her to the proper course of action.

8 9 10

"BE CAREFUL"

Saying this while your child is balancing on the monkey bars at the playground actually makes it more likely that he'll fall. If you're feeling anxious, move close to spot him in case he takes a tumble, being as still and quiet as you can.

"NO DESSERT"

Tweak your message along these lines: "First we eat our meal and then we have dessert." The wording change, though subtle, has a far more positive impact on your child.

"LET ME HELP"

When your child is struggling to build a block tower or finish a puzzle, it's natural to want to give him a hand. Instead, ask guiding questions to help him solve the problem: "Do you think the big piece or the little one should go at the bottom? Why do you think that? Let's give it a try."

LITTLE STYLE

Il Gufo beautiful Italian kids fashion for spring 2016

Il Gufo are one of the top Italian kids fashion labels that show at Pitti Bimbo in Florence and their catwalk show is always unusual and stunning. This season the transformed the catwalk into a summer meadow with built up grasses, poppies and daisies which came up to the kids waists and a trampled path down the middle of the catwalk. Young girls released butterflies from cupped hands and prayed for seeds they had planted to grow and a boy sped up and down at speed on a toy trike.

The kids fashion is based around smart casual tailoring for boys and pretty dresses, shorts and tops for girls with fashion elements included such as clusters of attached rosettes and petal appliques or circle embroidery details for overlarge polka dot looks.

The Three Things That Predict Happy Relationships

ince the 1970s, psychologists John and Julie Gottman— who happen to be married—have conducted scientific research to help couples build loving relationships. After one such study in 1986, Gottman checked back on the couples six years later. The couples that were together and happy he labeled “masters.” The couples that were apart or unhappy he named “disasters.” The study revealed a major discovery. When being interviewed about their spouses, the disasters had quickened heartbeats, active sweat glands, and fast blood flow. They were in fight-or-flight mode. The masters were physically comfortable, calm, connected, and exhibited affectionate behavior. Another major breakthrough was discovered while watching couples on vacation. Throughout the day, partners would make requests for connection, such as sharing part of an article they were

32

reading or asking the other person to take a look at an unusual bird flying by the window. These requests, called “bids,” are solicits for interest, support, or connection. In the sixyear follow-up, couples that were still together turned toward or attended to the bid 87 percent of the time, and couples that were divorced paid attention to the bid only 33 percent of the time. By observing these interactions, Gottman could predict a couple’s ability to stay to together with 94 percent

certainty. “There’s a habit of mind that the masters have,” Gottman told The Atlantic, “which is this: They are scanning social environment for things they can appreciate and say thank you for. They are building this culture of respect and appreciation very purposefully. Disasters are scanning the social environment for partners’ mistakes.” Finally, the Gottmans found that the number-one factor that tears couples apart is contempt. Partners who focus solely on their significant other’s negative traits miss out on 50 percent of their positive behaviors and find negativity where it doesn’t exist. On the other hand, kindness keeps couples together and is the most important predictor of marriage stability and satisfaction. “Kindness doesn’t mean that we don’t express our anger,” Julie Gottman told The Atlantic, “but the kindness informs how we choose to express the anger. You can throw spears at your partner. Or you can explain why you’re hurt and angry, and that’s the kinder path.”

How To Design A Feng Shui Bedroom

Did you know your home's design can affect your bank account and psychology? Try these feng shui tips based on the ancient art of balancing energy. Calm In today’s homes, it has become commonplace to have a TV in the bedroom. Yet, this might be the biggest obstacle to good feng shui energy. Not only does it create high EMFs, which are dangerous for your health, it also triggers workstress and invites it into your home. TV also acts as a distraction for those in a relationship, taking away couple time.

Add Doubles When decorating a room, it always makes more sense to get two of the same, especially with furniture. Feng shui follows the same principle saying it creates harmony in the r xant. Make sure you have a good mattress with a solid headboard and high quality sheets.

34

A good airflow One of the main principle of feng shui is to be mindful of the quality of the air in your bedroom. Otherwise, you cannot breathe in the good energy that feng shui creates. In the summer months open windows daily to ensure a good airflow into your room. In the winter months where this is not possible, use an air-purifier to keep the air in your bedroom fresh and full of oxygen.

Peaceful space promoting sleep and wellbeing. When it comes to your décor, neutral colors work best to promote a good flow of feng shui energy. The best colors are “skin colors,” anything from pale white to rich chocolate brown. With a clear energy flow you will find that you will sleep better, have less anxiety and be more at peace.

Organized and clean Many busy moms tend to neglect their own room, especially after they’ve spent hours cleaning and organizing their children’s rooms. A messy bedroom symbolizes unfinished business and keeps your mind in an anxious state. It is easy to fall into the trap of having a messy and cluttered space because there feels like there is no time to clear it, but this disrupts sleep and creates anxiety. Keep a routine where mess is cleaned, creating a peaceful space promoting sleep and wellbeing.

Prescriptions straight from your kitchen Learn what foods can help improve your memory, sharpen your mind, boost your energy, and enhance your life.

When Your brain is having a meltdown …Eat NUTS "When people go nuts, if they eat nuts, their brain power comes back," says Tolman. When University of Illinois at Chicago researchers fed mice with an Alzheimer's-like disease the human equivalent of a handful of almonds a day, they performed better on memory tests. Almonds are also rich in boron, which affects mental alertness.

To avoid sleepless nights… Drink MILK To sleep like a baby, drink like one. An American Journal of Clinical Nutrition study found that a protein in milk, alpha-lactalbumin, is rich in tryptophan, which aids sleep. And consuming it in the eve helps you dodge next-morning doziness. Plus, calcium can ease restlessness, since it reduces muscle spasms and soothes tension.

To alleviate pain… Eat CHERRIES The number one food to reduce pain perception is cherries,. When people have arthritis, aches or pains, cherries are the best thing to eat because they contain components similar to willow bark extract, the stuff aspirin was originally made from.

When you feel down… Eat OATS "If you notice that, for no good reason, you feel down... try carbohydrates," says Dr Judith Wurtman, author of The Good Mood Diet . Carbs prompt the brain to produce more serotonin. Opt for the slow-release complex variety, like oats and wholegrain breads and pasta, says Dr Wurtman, because the more steadily your system absorbs the carbs, the more steadily the serotonin will flow. Don't feel like a bowl of muesli? Have a glass of oat milk instead. And be patient Dr Wurtman says you should allow about 90 minutes for the good vibes to kick in, but you can expect the mood boost to last about three hours.

Are Social Media Platforms Trying Too Hard to Be the Same?

T

oday’s social media platforms are certainly not mutually exclusive. In fact, most of us engage across several social channels at once. But with competing platform functionalities announced daily related to data, messaging, search, and social commerce, are the networks trying too hard to be the same? Are social media platforms becoming homogeneous imitations of each other? Major Trends Are Repeating across Social Media Platforms With the big social networks in particular—Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and to some degree, Instagram—we’re starting to see major trends repeat in terms of messaging, access to data, social commerce, and search functionality. • Messaging. Social messaging is stronger than ever and the networks are responding with new and improved options for users to share video and have casual conversations seamlessly. On the heels of Facebook reporting 600 million users on its messaging app, Twitter increased its character limit to 10,000 in direct messages and LinkedIn rolled out its own messaging experience. Instagram and Twitter (until now) may have dominated the emoji experience, but Facebook now offers an emoji alterative to the “like” button. With Facebook at Work mimicking LinkedIn space and other comparable enhancements being made across channels, we’re seeing messaging as a differentiator sort of collapse across social networks. • Data. Facebook and Twitter are in many ways fighting over which platform can package and present the best opportunities for brands in terms of rich data. In March of this year, Facebook introduced Topic Data, designed to make content more relevant and effective for marketers. Twitter responded by transitioning data access to its own platform and in October announced Gnip Insights APIs. By design, Facebook is more private than Twitter and has had to toe the line between user privacy and surfacing meaningful data around popular trends. Twitter users have no expectation of privacy, and the network has more flexibility. However, user profiles are limited, and that can be a data disadvantage. • Social commerce. Again, Facebook and Twitter are sparring as it relates to social commerce, even as Pinterest is a more natural fit. Recently, Facebook announced a new mobile shopping section with a new native product browsing experience called “Canvas,” where users can click through ads to check out products. Of course, this came on the heels of Twitter’s “buy now” button and Pinterest’s Buyable Pins.

38

KEEPING SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING FRESH As the platforms begin to mimic one another, marketers will likely face challenges in understanding how best to maximize each one. Tailor content to your audience. As social media platforms mature, the one-size-fits-all approach won’t work, and even as networks homogenize, messaging must be tailored. Data, both on audience and content performance, is key. Although there are sure to be overlaps between the different networks’ strategies, audiences will still vary. As platforms share information with you, that’s what should inform strategy. After all, each platform still serves unique user needs—for example, LinkedIn is the go-to for B2B and recruitment, whereas Twitter excels in second screen marketing, especially for media and sports. Understand data limitations, and don’t neglect content performance. Facebook is the most powerful network because the company knows the most about its audience. However, users have an expectation of privacy and Facebook has to walk the line between accumulating data and violating privacy. Traditionally, Twitter is a more open network, but the platform doesn’t have access to robust user profiles. LinkedIn has incredibly rich data and can provide valuable audience insights. On Instagram, user profiles don’t exist, as they are essentially a string of emojis. Keep in mind that there will always be limitations on audience data across networks that will impact insight, but you can and should figure out how your content is performing. Play to each platform’s strengths. Ultimately, inventive social marketing comes down to learning how to maximize each platform’s strengths. More than any other social media network, Twitter has mastered capturing the “real-time pulse” of the world. Whether it’s disseminating breaking news or gauging feedback on an event, when people want to know what others have to say in the here and now they turn to Twitter. Pinterest is set up naturally to take on the role of a visual search network and may be the right option for prioritizing social commerce. Playing to the strengths of each platform as it makes sense for your brand is the solution to a fresh, inventive strategy.

IN SUM Savvy marketers will continue to seek ways to use rich data to both learn about an audience and assess how content is performing—the key to managing your social media presence effectively. For the social platforms, those that survive the test of time will undoubtedly be the ones that have managed to differentiate themselves the most. In the meantime, as they hash it out, it can only mean better features and more options for marketers.

INNOVATION

Repurpose school bags

With so much focus on switching to renewable energy resources, it can be easy to forget that there are still parts of the world that don’t have any adequate electricity infrastructure at all. At night, entire communities plunge into darkenss unless they fire up dangerous, polluting kerosene lanterns. That’s why we paid particularly close attention to a startup called Rethaka, which created school bags for children that are made of recycled material, and come with solar panels that charge during the day and can be used as homework lanterns at night. The project was supportive of education for young ones, and at the same time developed a product that was ecofriendly and safe to use. It also integrated into children’s daily lives with its simple functionality - the panels would charge up on the backs of the wearer during their walk to school.

The world’s first virtual reality cinema has opened in Amsterdam Virtual reality has been gaining ground in video games and online video in the past few years, and we even saw the world’s first VR theme park set to open in Utah. At the beginning of this month, the world’s first VR Cinema opened in Amsterdam. The idea originated as a pop-up cinema touring cities in the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland. Unlike a traditional cinema, the theatre uses Samsung Gear VR, combined with a Samsung Galaxy S6 and a 360 degree chair to allow people to look around freely through the film. This is combined with immersive headphones to give a full VR experience to those watching the films.

Virtual reality platform for nervous public speakers

Public speaking can be very nerveracking, especially for those who have had little practice at it. Now, VirtualSpeech is a VR platform, which will help inexperienced speakers to gain confidence, by enabling them to practice in front of a virtual crowd using Google Cardboard. To begin, users download the app and upload their slides and notes for their upcoming project. Then, they choose a training scenario — either a 15 person office or a 400 person conference. Next, they put on their Google Cardboard headset, which immerses them in a realistic, 3D environment. The user can then practice their speech or presentation to an animated audience. Virtual Speech is currently available on Android, with an iOS app coming soon.

Is social media considered to be an advantage or disadvantage?

Positive and Negative Aspects of social media Because of the way the internet has changed the way we communicate and interact with one another on so many levels; it became necessary to explore the pros and cons of social media and its effects on our society and children. Some of the Pros include: INCREASED CRIMINAL PROSECUTION BECAUSE OF SOCIAL MEDIA The NYC police department began using Twitter back in 2011 to track criminals foolish enough to brag about their crimes online. When the Vancouver Canucks lost the Stanley Cup in 2011, their Vancouver fans took to the streets and rioted, but local authorities used social media to track and tag the people involved, and they caught people who were stealing during the riot.

1

SOCIAL NETWORKING CREATES NEW SOCIAL CONNECTIONS Statistics show that 70% of adults have used social media sites to connect with relatives in other states, and 57% of teens have reported making new friendships on social media sites.

2 3

STUDENTS ARE DOING BETTER IN SCHOOL This is an interesting statistic about the pros and cons of social media and its effect on students doing well in school. Students with internet access at a rate of 50% have reported using social networking sites to discuss school work, and another 59% talk about instructive topics. cons of social media, take a close look at all the support groups on Facebook. Members of these groups discuss their health conditions, share important information, and resources relevant to their conditions while creating strong support networks.

5 SOCIAL MEDIA AS A SOURCE OF EMPLOYMENT

Job sourcing has gone modern due to social media. Sites such as LinkedIn are a major resource that 89% of job recruiters take advantage of when looking to hire potential employees by examining their profile. But just like anything, there is a positive and a negative side. Now let’s examine the cons of social media: SOCIAL MEDIA AND THE NEWS Much of the news information that people read comes from social media websites, and that figure estimate is around 27.8 %. This figure ranks just under print newspapers at 28.8%, greater than radio’s figure of 18.8% and far outpaces the figure for other print publications at just 6%. Which is making it easier for the reader, instead of grabbing a newspaper to read, they go on social media to discover the news.

1

TOO MUCH MISINFORMATION & MISLEADING With the advent of the web, people started to create their own websites and blogs. While many of those blogs were just basic diaries, a few of them were about topics like health and politics. Many blogs have turned into rumor

mills, spreading misinformation that people tend to believe just because it’s on the web. STUDENTS SPENDING TOO MUCH TIME ON SOCIAL MEDIA SITES HAVE LOWER ACADEMIC GRADES Here is another argument about the pros and cons of social media as it pertains to students. Statistics show that pupils using social media too often tend to have GPA’s of 3.06 compared to GPA’s of 3.82 for pupils who don’t use social media. An even scarier fact is that students who use social media tend to score 20 % lower on their test scores then their counterparts.

3

SOCIAL MEDIA SITES TO BLAME FOR LOST PRODUCTIVITY Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter are a direct cause for lost productivity at the workplace. In a survey 36 % of people said that social networking was the biggest waste of time in comparison to activities like football, shopping, and watching television.

4

SOCIAL MEDIA IS A MAJOR CAUSE FOR LESS FACE TO FACE COMMUNICATION Lack of one on one communication. In a 2012 study families who reported spending less time with one another rose from a level of 8% in 2000 to 32% in 2011. The study also reported that 32 % of the people in the survey either were texting or were on social media sites instead of communicating with each other during family gatherings.

TRAVEL

To Find Cheap Flights, the Day (Kind of) Matters

M

any travelers think the magic day is Tuesday, long lauded by travel deal sites and various publications, including this one, for its fare sales. Other travelers may have heard pundits declare Wednesday the ideal day.

There are too many variables at play for there to be a universally ideal day to buy an airline ticket. Price depends on a variety of factors, including the route; the level of competition on the route; surrounding holidays and events (like a convention or the Super Bowl); and the days of the week you plan to fly. Besides, nowadays we have fare calendars at our fingertips and websites such as Kayak and Travelzoo that alert us to low fares and sales — and those sales don’t always take place on the same day of the week. Airlines are perpetually tweaking prices, making predictions difficult. Expedia said as much in its report. Even though its latest research asserts that weekends have the best fares, consumers who spot a good deal on Thursday shouldn’t wait until Saturday to buy it with the hope that the price will tumble even further. “If you find a fare that looks like a good deal, grab it,” the report said, “regardless of the day of week.” In addition to recommending the best times of the week to book, Expedia and other sites such as FareCompare publish suggestions about how far in advance of a trip to book to score the lowest fare. For instance, Expedia reported in December that the optimal time to buy an economy ticket for travel in North America is 57 days in advance, resulting in a potential savings of about 10 percent versus the average fare. Recommended lead times for travel to international destinations, including Europe and Asia-Pacific, were even longer. Travelers shouldn’t think of predictions as rules, though. “There are flights to Asia, for example, that are 1750 QAR cheaper when booked at the last minute as opposed to months in advance.”

44

Many people ponder what they should do for a vacation and I realized a lot of people don’t seem to share my views about traveling. I believe it’s very important to see the world and different cultures. It lets us open our minds to new things and we get to experience life in exiting different ways.

Benefits of Travelling

TRAVELING GIVES US THE OPPORTUNITY TO DISCONNECT FROM OUR REGULAR LIFE. You get to forget your problems/issues for a few weeks, it can also help you figure things out that you would not have understood without the distance traveling can give you. We all have crazy schedules, work and a family to take care of, going away alone or with some friends can give you distance and perhaps even make you realize how important these people are for you generic viagra 100mg. Like the saying says: we never know what we have until we lose it. ANOTHER GREAT BENEFIT IS THE RELAXATION YOU GET TO DO. It’s nice to live life to its fullest and enjoy a stress free time with yourself. Going on vacation lets us recharge our “batteries” by disconnecting us from our regular life. When we come back we feel invigorated and we are happy to be back in our day to day routine. It’s a very good stress remover that has a lot more to give than most people are willing to accept. TRAVELING INCREASES OUR KNOWLEDGE AND WIDENS OUR PERSPECTIVE. To view new customs, different ways of living is fantastic for the mind. It gives us a new perspective about life and especially our life, it can help us change some of our habits or even create new ones. When I travel I usually make it a point to try new food, some cultures don’t have fries in their diet and they are all skinny, others use spices to give taste and not oils or fats. Discovering different values and ways to get by in life is really interesting. You also need to visit exotic new places and discover what this wonderful world has to offer. NEW EXPERIENCES INCREASE OUR RESOURCEFULNESS by living situations you would never encounter at home, this is great experience

for you when you come back to your routine. I have noticed that people who traveled a lot in life were ready to embrace change and have a natural ability of overcoming problems that others would frown upon. WHEN TRAVELING WITH FRIENDS OR FAMILY IT CREATES MEMORIES FOR A LIFETIME. These memories will create a bond that nothing can erase no matter what happens with the friendship/relationship. It can also give a new perspective on the relationship and cement the bond forever. It also gives nice stories to tell people afterwards, you can create photo albums about your trips and when you feel nostalgic you can take an hour of your life and experience the trips again by looking at your pictures. IT’S NEVER BEEN THIS CHEAP TO TRAVEL. With soaring oil prices the cheap travel era might be coming to an end. However there are still many budget airlines fighting for your dollar right now. With the internet and all the new technology, you can plan your trip exactly the way you want it. You can choose your budget, the duration of the trip and what you want to do. I suggest to read travel blogs and see what others are experiencing, you can save yourself a few hurdles by reading about their trip. If you have some time off I suggest to take that trip and experience what life has to offer. Don’t wait or tell yourself there will be a better time to go. Take the risk, the opportunity and buy your plane ticket right now and leave. When you come back you won’t be sorry that you left, on the contrary you will be thinking of your next trip the second you come back from the airport. Feel free to let me know how traveling helped you out, what new experiences you lived and how they helped you in your life.

How to Balance Your

e've all faced, are facing or bound to face this predicament at some point or the other. Things move far too fast in the hustle of today's world and you can often be left feeling as though you hardly have any time for your family, friends and leisure time with incessant work commitments, not to mention any time for yourself. For a while, you won't let it get the better of you but trust us, everything catches up on you in the end. Taking all these things into account, below is a list of tips that might help you strike a finer balance between your personal and professional life. If you apply them in your own life, it is guaranteed that the following tips will leave you feeling happier, healthier and better rested too.

46

PRIORITIZE

DELEGATE

MAKE LISTS AND SCHEDULE, SCHEDULE, SCHEDULE!

LEARN HOW TO SAY 'NO'

You have to be able to put the things which are more important to you above the others. At the end of the day you need to be able to be realistic about what needs to be done first.

Being organized can be very helpful. Try to make a list every morning with your cup of coffee which will include both your professional and personal commitments.

LEAVE THINGS BEHIND

It's vital that you leave your personal life at home when you go to work and viceversa. Or you'll basically never be able to focus on or enjoy either entirely.

Learn how to trust other people and delegate both in your professional and personal life. Allowing other people to help you will only increase your downtime which you can then effectively use to satisfy the other part of your life. If you want to achieve a good balance, say 'no' when it's necessary. It will make all the difference.

ALONE TIME

finally, don't forget about yourself! It's impossible for you to do any of this unless you're scheduling a little time for yourself amidst all this hectic running around between your two lives. It could be something as simple as reading a book or taking a walk in the park.
