ASIAN CUISINE 1. Double Dragon Restaurant
3107 W. Clearwater Ave., Kennewick 509-737-8833
Double Dragon restaurant in Kennewick offers more than just your average Chinese cuisine. They’re known for their large portions, low prices and varied menu, but the quality is what keeps people coming back for more. You can find favorites like almond chicken, General Tso’s chicken and kung pao chicken. “Everything is made fresh,” said Lisa Then, who owns the restaurant along with her husband Ron. The Thens came nearly 30 years ago from China’s Canton province with a dream to open up their own restaurant. Ron was working as a chef at another Chinese restaurant in Bend, Oregon before he decided it was time to fulfill their dream. In 1993 they opened their very first restaurant in Hermiston. In 1999, they opened Double Dragon in Kennewick. Lisa Then said the best part about owning her restaurant is meeting and interacting with her customers. “I really love our customers, they’re really nice. They are so friendly,” she said. Because of that they enjoy donating gift cards to senior group homes and other worthy organizations. The restaurant offers a weekday two item lunch special for $4.25, and they have a small selection of beer and wine on the menu. Diners can enjoy Double Dragon from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through
Thursday and until 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

1. Ice Harbor Brewing Co. 206 N. Benton St., Kennewick 509-582-5340 350 Clover Island Drive, Kennewick 509-586-3181 iceharbor.com
After home brewing for 10 years, Mike Hall and Bill Jaquish quit their jobs at the Hanford site to pursue their dream of starting a local brewery. Their vision for this brewery was to bring back the days where local beer lovers could stop by to talk about beer, sample the brews and fill their refillable bottles
with draft beer. They knew that great beer could only be brewed by people with a passion for and a deep understanding of beer and the brewing process, and with that, Ice Harbor Brewery was born. The brewery moved its brewing operations from downtown Pasco to its current location in downtown Kennewick in June 2004, and in November 2007, they opened a restaurant overlooking the Port of Kennewick marina. Ice Harbor Brewing has grown from one brewer, one manager, one cook and two servers to more than 45 full-time equivalent employees. “We have achieved our growth through our company values of treating employees fairly and equitably, brewing award-winning beer
and providing exceptional customer service,” the duo said. The brewpub keeps its customers’ pint glasses full of delicious brews like Columbia Kolsch, Runaway Red Ale, Sternwheeler Stout and Tangerine ExBEERience, just to name a few. Both locations offer tasty dishes to go along with their beer, like halibut fish tacos and a stout mushroom burger. Aside from operating an award-winning brewery, Hall and Jaquish manage to stay involved in the community. Hall currently serves on the Tri-City Water Follies Board of Directors as well as the Historic Downtown Kennewick Partnership Board of Directors. Ice Harbor Brewery is proud to provide beer for numerous charitable causes.

Jim Sterling, restaurant owner, has a long history in restaurants, owning and managing chains around the state. When he decided to settle down, raise his family and open a restaurant with his name on the door, the Tri-Cities just fit. “He thought this was the best place to raise a family. Wes did not take a salary for two years, and Shannon worked as a nurse while helping out at the coffee shop. Now seven years and five additional locations later, Roasters still aims to make exceptional coffee for the people of the Tri-Cities. Wes takes coffee seriously, and he wants all customers to have a great experience. Every location has a funky,
Jim Sterling transformed an existing restaurant he owned on George Washington Way into the first Sterling’s Restaurant in 1990. Saber Sterling grew up in the restaurant. While some kids had chores at home, her chores were small tasks at Sterling’s. As the younger Sterlings grew, Jim Sterling expanded his restaurants, opening the Kennewick location in 2008 and the Queensgate restaurant in 2012. Saber started managing a restaurant at 18. “It’s just what made the most sense,” she said. “It keeps me busy, and it’s nice to carry on the family tradition.” Even with three restaurants, Saber Sterling said a family member is usually at each restaurant daily. While Saber Sterling manages the Queensgate store, her younger brother works on the staff in Kennewick, her mother takes care of the Washington Way store and her father bounces between all three. The family has inspired a family of customers to call Sterling’s a favorite. “We have such a regular customer base that it’s nice. Everyone seems like family,” Sterling said. “It’s so nice to see the same faces, and we’re really lucky that we have such great customers.”
cool atmosphere. Roasters crafts a variety of coffee drinks, and the coffee is roasted locally at Resilient Coffee Roasters, also owned by Wes. Roasters has many loyal customers, and their baristas tend to remember the coffee orders of their regulars. Moving forward, there are plans to open three more Roasters locations, and Wes is interested in expanding outside of the Tri-Cities.

The restaurants still have soups made from scratch, hand-cut meats and range-fed beef, but they are also expanding into items like cocktails and fresh-squeezed bloody Mary sampler dishes. All three sport the same atmosphere, and that will carry on in the rebuild of the George Washington Way location, currently underway. A new restaurant is being built behind the existing building, but Saber Sterling said the old location will remain in operation until the day the doors open for the new building.

Local vegetables, Washington wines, sophisticated dishes and a riverfront view make Anthony’s at Columbia Point a fine dining, seafood establishment that’s hard to beat. Known for its fresh, wild-raised fish, the first Anthony’s Restaurant opened in Bellevue in 1969. The company searches for locations on the water and found the perfect location in the Tri-Cities: adjacent to Richland’s Marina Park and overlooking the Columbia River. The Richland restaurant opened in 2004. Mike Tvedt, general manager of Anthony’s at Columbia Point, said the Richland location also has the added benefit of being within driving distance of farms and wineries ready to put the freshest options on the menu. Tvedt said the Richland location is the only restaurant in the Anthony’s family to feature fresh, local asparagus this spring. “We have spent years cultivating relationships with farmers in the Tri-Cities. Tagaris Winery, a family-owned estate winery, has a longstanding history in the area’s wine country, and an even longer history of winemaking. Winemaker Michael Taggares founded Tagaris Winery in 1987, but his family has been growing wine grapes in Greece since the 15th century. Tagaris Winery is the modern day result of three generations of grape growers in Washington’s Columbia Valley. The winery has several large vineyards. The 200-acre Arete Vineyards straddles the “Top of the Hill” at Radar Hill near Othello and was planted in 1983. The younger Alice Vineyards (named after Michael Taggares’ mother), which is comprised of 100 acres of different exotic grape varieties, lies along the south slopes of Saddle Mountain in

The love that we put into the food and the wine stands out above the rest,” said Brandon Emch, manager of the winery. “We take great pride in what we do and our product.” In the summer, Tagaris is a great place to kick back, relax and enjoy some live music. The winery hosts concerts every Friday and Saturday from June to September.
“We are a farm-to-fresh restaurant with local purveyors. All wine is made on site, and we have a new release every four months,” Emch added. Their most popular wines are the 2012 Cab Franc and the 2014 Riesling.

ANNUAL COMMUNITY EVENT 1. Water Follies waterfollies.com
For thousands of people across the Mid-Columbia and beyond, summer isn’t complete until they watch the hydroplane racing action during Water Follies weekend. Since 1966 hydroplanes have been racing on the Columbia River, dazzling spectators on the shores of Columbia Park and on the shoreline in Pasco. With plenty of hydroplane racing during the Columbia Cup, HAPO’s Over the River Airshow, shoreline activities, food and vendor booths and much more, there is no shortage of action and fun during Water Follies weekend. “We’re full-on celebrating summer,” said Kathy Powell, event director. Over the years the weekend-long event has turned into a summer celebration that everybody can enjoy. “The Water Follies has had its ups and downs,” Powell said. “They’ve had a very colorful history, but it’s settled right now into being a great family-friendly event that the community can be proud of. All our volunteers work very hard to make it a legitimate and relevant event for everybody.” Around 1,500 volunteers help make Water Follies a success every year. “The Tri-City Water Follies is very fortunate because we have just an ideal venue. We have viewing on both sides of the river, our pits are large enough to accommodate all of
the boat teams and the cranes, and our volunteers are just dedicated to making it the best event possible,” she said. “It’s truly an honor to be recognized by the Tri-Cities as an event that they love and embrace,” Powell said. “That’s very rewarding, and I’m sure the volunteers will be very excited.”

The new Queensgate 12 theater has spacious auditoriums with a few upgrades to be aware of – most obvious are the plush leather electric reclining seats. Select auditoriums are equipped with Dolby Atmos. Chase Fairchild, director of theater operations said, “The Atmos system lets filmmakers place sound elements in 3-D space. It allows for a more immersive movie experience.” Fairchild Cinemas seeks to make
a trip to the movies enjoyable for diverse audiences. For example, The Carson Kolzig Foundation sponsors a sensory-friendly showing for families affected by autism; during the showing, the lights are turned on and the sound is not as loud. The ARC of Tri-Cities and Service Center of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing host an open caption showing that is open to the community. Groups wanting to host a special showing may contact Toni Parmelee at 509-544-8993. In 1978, he worked at a station in Spokane. “I had to drive out to the Air Force base where the guys would give me a briefing and I took notes,” Adams remembered. “We hardly had three-day forecasts then.” Adams grew up near Coeur d’Alene, Idaho and recalled how he listened to farmers pray for rain for their crops, or pray for no rain during the harvest season. “I drove a combine,” said Adams. “The raindrops were pennies from heaven.” Adams believes coming into the homes and workplaces of the people of the Tri-Cities region is a privilege. Beaver Bark Garden Center is a local treasure, having won Garden Center of the Year in 2010 and continuing their tradition of excellence. The local, family-owned gift and garden center provides customers with a visually stunning experience – with its spectacular hanging flower baskets, as well as comprehensive inventory of plants and garden products in over 10,000 square feet of store space. Renae Bobbett, co-owner and founder, works with her highly knowledgeable and talented team of nearly 40 people to continually improve the aesthetics
of the store layout. Bobbett calls this a “labor of love.” Located along I-82 in Richland, Beaver Bark is open year-round. Stop by in October and you might be haunted by their selection of Halloween décor for the home and garden. Families can come during the holiday season to pick out a tree, and get warm by an outdoor bonfire while children stay entertained with the live reindeer. Bunnies and chicks seem to come alive all over in the spring, and children are particularly interested in the “Fairy Garden” section of the store. The Beaver Bark family grows much of its own plant products and works together to create an ever-evolving beautiful gift and garden store. It is evident to customers in touring the Water Garden Department, including the Koi pond, that Beaver Bark just keeps getting better. “Future plans are in the works, and ground will be broken this spring for an on-site warehouse for inventory efficiencies,” Bobbett said. HARDWARE STORE 1. Ace Hardware

The family behind Griggs Department Store and Ace Hardware have very strong ties to the Tri-Cities. Griggs was first opened in 1938 by Mr. and Mrs. Charles G. Grigg in a small store in Pasco, where they sold furniture, appliances and general merchandise. After a few expansions, Griggs became the largest locally owned and independent retailer in the Northwest. In 1969, Griggs began their affiliation with Ace Hardware. There are four store locations: two in Richland, one in Kennewick and one in Pasco. The Richland Ace Hardware and Sporting Goods on George Washington Way, which opened in 2005, was one of the most successful openings in Ace Hardware history. Then in 2007, the Ace Hardware on Keene Road opened with 22,000 square feet of retail space and also broke Ace Hardware opening records. Charlie Grigg, vice president of Griggs and local Ace Hardware locations, said accessibility and selection is what contributes to the success of the stores. “The convenience of being able to get in and get what you need and get on with your day is really important,” he said. “We have what you need when you need it, and you won’t be wandering aimlessly around the aisles like in other big department stores.” And it’s not just general hardware equipment you will find at Ace, as they offer a range of different products. “We have sporting goods, gardening supplies and much more,” Grigg said. “It really is a one-stop shop.”

Walking into a car dealership to purchase a vehicle can be a daunting task. The overwhelming selection, looming sticker prices and not to mention the cliché car buying experience of shady dealers most people have come to expect. The guys over at Archibald’s want to change all that. They want their customers to walk onto their lot and truly have a good, honest car buying experience. No hidden agendas, no stunts – just good old fashioned business dealings.
“We are thin skinned guys,” said Danny Archibald, owner and founder of Archibald’s. “We aren’t like your typical car dealer. We’re actually probably too nice of guys to be in the car business.” Archibald and his father first opened the dealership in Kennewick in 2001, and their vision was clear: live by the ‘golden rule.’ “We just treat everybody how we would want to be treated, and we really mean that,” said Archibald. “It’s so easy to shine in the car business when you simply do what you said you were going to do. We are super easy to work with, and when people walk into our business, they will be met with a happy atmosphere, good moods and a great experience.” Taking a look at their customer reviews definitely attests to that
vision: they consistently get 5 star ratings from their customers and a trending topic seems to be how amazed people are with their overall experience. “This is just a really fun place,” Archibald said. “I wake up every day excited to go to work. Everyone is happy, we’re selling cars and it’s a pretty cool culture to be a part of.”

Giving back to the community is also important to them, and they will be hosting a blood drive with the American Red Cross on June 10.

Windermere Real Estate Tri-Cities, Kennewick For the last five years, each individual city in the community, including the outlying areas, have chosen Windermere Real Estate Tri-Cities in Kennewick to represent more existing home sellers than any other real estate office in the Tri-Cities. Dave Retter, owner and founder of the Kennewick real estate office, believes the success of their office comes from the quality of their agents and staff. “For the last 23 years I have had the privilege of leading an incredible group of realtors and staff, many of whom started with me right after we opened our doors,” he said. Despite being busy selling homes, the team at Windermere Tri-Cities finds time to support their commu26
nity’s various charities and organizations through sponsorships. A handful of those organizations include the Kennewick Police Foundation, Gesa Carousel of Dreams, Safe Harbor Crisis Center, the Boys and Girls Club and the Toyota Center’s Windermere Theater. “For the last three years the Kennewick office has been the sole supporter of the theater. I have had so many people tell me how they appreciate us for our loyalty to the venue,” Retter said. People appreciate the real estate office’s loyalty to their clients as well, as this is the fourth year Windermere has been voted the top winner. “Everyone at Windermere Real Estate Tri-Cities would like to thank the Tri-City community for honoring us with the People’s Choice Award again this year. The highest compliment to our real estate office however, comes from the community trusting us to help them achieve the great American dream: homeownership.” Windermere Group One, Richland Windermere Group One founder Jeff Thompson has been a Windermere owner since 1997, and saw opportunity to expand to a new branch in 2010. The agency, which has close to 65 agents, is set to open a second location in the Southridge area late this spring. “That’s a growing market over there, and it’s expanding further and further south,” said Patti Thompson. “Right now there’s no other large real estate companies over there that can really serve those people. Corporate said expand, and we did indeed.”
Their expansion comes at an ideal time, as 2016 has been a busy year for real estate agents in this area. “The market is very swift, and it is, in most price ranges, a seller’s market. Meaning you’re going to get top dollar for your house and in a lot of price points, you may get multiple offers,” said Jeff Thompson. The agency offers a unique opportunity for all of their realtors to become stockholders in the company. “Our motto is unlocking the power of ownership. Agents are partners with us as owners of the company, so they have the opportunity to be more involved than just listing and selling real estate. They’re shareholders in our company,” Patti Thompson said.
Group One provides continuous training for all their agents, regardless of tenure. “Our training is nonstop, on a daily basis. And it’s not just new agents, it’s everybody,” Jeff Thompson said. “Our job is to make sure that our people are educated and they know how to handle things.”

1. Kadlec Regional Medical Center 888 Swift Blvd., Richland 509-946-4611 kadlec.org
In the early 1940s, a farmhouse at Hanford served as a temporary medical facility for the thousands of people living in the small town of Richland as work ramped up at Hanford. In 1944 the Richland Hospital, a traditional medical facility, opened with 91 rooms that could hold 115 patients at a time. In the first year, the hospital served 3,153 patients, including Lt. Col. Harry Kadlec, the deputy area engineer and chief of construction for the Army Corps of Engineers at Hanford. Colonel Kadlec had a heart attack that summer and became the first death in the new facility. On July 10, 1944, the Richland Hospital was renamed in his honor.
Today, Kadlec is the second largest employer in the Tri-Cities area and in the midst of a multi-million dollar expansion. The center provides 24/7 medical care and an expansive health system in the Tri-Cities. It is also the People’s Choice for best hospital – again. “We are very honored and humbled, really, to be considered for this recognition because it’s about the patients in this region,” said Jim Hall, community relations director. “It boils down to the patient care. We see tens of thousands of patients, and we work to take care of each patient that comes through the doors individually. Our team takes a lot of pride in our work. Our mission is to serve the patients of our region, and we take that very seriously.”

Dr. Hank Oliver and his staff at Animal Hospital of Pasco know a thing or two about treating the Tri-Cities’ beloved pets, from cats and dogs to goats and horses. Dr. Oliver has even treated tigers, camels, zebras and a wallaby. “We do it all. If they can’t find anyone else that really knows their way around it, we’ll help as best we can,” Dr. Oliver said of the more exotic animals he’s treated through-
out his career. Over the years the Animal Hospital of Pasco has expanded from a garage and a couple rooms to their current building. “We did a remodel a couple years ago because one of our biggest problems was being able to get people through in a timely fashion because we were somewhat limited on space,” Dr. Oliver explained. “We expanded the clinic and that has helped out tremendously.” Aside from the typical cat and dog treatments, Dr. Oliver and his staff are known for their equine care. There are several barns and stables on the property, and they recently purchased a wireless digital x-ray plate to help with equine work.

The flower store provides regular deliveries to local hospitals and funeral homes. Orders can be made online, over the phone or in person at the Richland shop. The signature items for Arlene’s remain the custom design work – an advantage to having local control and an experienced staff – and Stutzman said she hopes customers see the local business as a personalized service, even when they order online. “We have an excellent staff and work hard to provide excellent service,” Stutzman said. “It’s a blessing to create something that says something words cannot.”

CATERER
1. Country Gentleman 9221 W. Clearwater Ave., Kennewick 509-783-0128 cgcatering.com
Country Gentleman first opened its doors in 1978 on Highway 395 in Kennewick, and in 1996, Steve and Shirley Simmons purchased the restaurant from Shirley’s sister, moved to their current location off Clearwater Avenue and the catering business began. “Catering has always been in my background,” said Shirley Simmons, having worked for 10 years at a country club in Portland. “I’m quite a people person, I love to be creative and I’m a total foodie.” A hardworking and passionate staff definitely contributes to the success of Country Gentleman. “We can go from delivering a breakfast for 20 at a doctor’s office to a full winemakers’ dinner for 500, so the staff has to wear a lot of different hats.” When it comes to event size, everyone is given the utmost attention. “Little or big, we treat them all the same,” she said. The increased popularity of cooking shows has delivered a new element in the catering world. “The Food Network has brought clients to a totally different level,” said Simmons. “They come in wanting exactly what they saw on TV. It’s challenging in a way, but we always try to accommodate, and we rarely use the word no.” The passion Simmons and her staff have for catering is evident. “I hear time and time again that 34

WEDDING / EVENT VENUE 1. Moore Mansion 200 N. Road 34, Pasco 509-547-0336 mooremansion.com
The Moore Mansion has seen a lot in its 108 years. It’s been a private residence, a restaurant and has even survived a fire. Owners Debra and Brad Peck have worked on restoring the historic home and in doing so have turned it into the Tri-Cities’ favorite wedding and event venue. 2015 was a very busy year, with 30 weddings. “This year we have 17 or 18, which is a real easy year,” Debra Peck said. The Pecks purchased the historical gem in 2004, after it had sat vacant for three years with extensive fire and water damage after an arson in 2001. “Two days before the city was court ordered to tear it down we stepped in,” Peck said. “We had no idea how much it meant to the people of the Tri-Cities. We just felt like it was a job that somebody needed to do.” Though still a work in progress, the Pecks have worked hard to restore the home to its historical glory
and have held about 200 weddings on site over the last 10 years. All weddings, proms and fundraisers are held outdoors on the mansion’s immaculate grounds. Special moments during wedding receptions, such as the bouquet toss, cake cutting and the couple’s first dance are done on the mansion’s large porch or balcony so guests can easily watch. “I love weddings, to me that’s my reward because that day is so special for the couple,” Peck said. “I love all my brides. I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t love them.”
