Dear Sisters,
Tri Delta’s 58th Biennial Convention was an incredible experience. We had a chance to celebrate Tri Delta’s successes over the past biennium and lay the ground work for an even more successful future. We introduced the world to “Our Kind of Kind” with a powerful video created by Sara Hirsh Bordo’s, Texas/ Christian, firm Women Rising. From welcoming six new sisters into our sisterhood with our beautiful Ritual to celebrating lifetime membership with our Silver and Golden Circle ceremonies, Convention 2018 renewed and strengthened the perpetual bonds of friendship we all hold dear. If you weren’t able to join us in Dallas-Fort Worth, you can read all the Convention highlights on pages 28-34, and on pages 3641, you can meet our amazing award winners who we celebrated at our Cerulean Celebration Awards Gala. These brave, bold and kind women continue to be an inspiration as they give back to Tri Delta. Prior to Convention, we also launched LEADDD, our inaugural leadership development conference for women, which you can read more about on page 24. More than 325 women joined us for a day of impactful workshops and speakers, including Laura Bush, First Lady of the United States (2001-2009). I am proud of how Tri Delta is boldly leading the way to empower and develop women, and I’m excited that we’re taking this new conference on the road this spring—details coming soon! As if the excitement of LEADDD and Convention weren’t enough, we also had the honor of dedicating the Ginger Hicks Smith

Museum & Archives at Tri Delta’s Executive Office. Thanks to the kind generosity and leadership of Ginger Hicks Smith, Emory, Tri Delta has a beautiful new home for its special treasures. You can get a sneak peek of the new museum on pages 18-23, and if you’re ever in Dallas, be sure to stop by for a tour. I am humbled to serve a second term as your Fraternity President and so honored to serve Tri Delta alongside incredible women leaders for the 2018-2020 biennium. Meet the dedicated volunteers who are serving on Tri Delta’s three Boards on pages 8-11. Beyond our Boards, we have more than 3,000 committed volunteers serving on committees, task forces, house corporations, and helping our collegiate and alumnae chapters and members live, learn and lead — with Purpose. Tri Delta wouldn’t be what it is today without them. To all of my sisters: thank you for your support, your service and your passion. And thank you especially for your willingness to Bring You to Tri Delta. I am grateful for our many accomplishments over the past two years and excited about what the next two years hold for Tri Delta. Loyally,
Kimberlee Di Fede Sullivan, Pepperdine Fraternity President P.S. Be sure to mark your calendar for Convention 2020, July 10-12 in Orlando, Florida. We hope to see you there! Copyright 2018 Delta Delta Delta Fraternity
Two years ago, it was hard to envision standing in front of 600 of my sisters at Convention 2018 and delivering the State of the Fraternity as your Fraternity President, but in July I did just that. It’s amazing how Tri Delta has a way of preparing you for things you had no idea you’d be called upon to do. I remember two years ago someone asking me how I would know I was successful as Fraternity President. I remember pausing and thinking to myself that if Tri Delta were still here in two years, I’d be successful. And you are, and I am so grateful!

Through a letter to Sarah Ida Shaw, Tri Delta’s “Our Kind of Kind” video, created by Women Rising, shows current members telling our Founder what her words mean to us today. At Convention 2018, we asked our members, “If you had a chance to write a letter to Sarah Ida Shaw, what would you say? What would you tell her about Tri Delta today?” Sisters shared their responses on social media, and you can too. Use #LetterToSarah or email your letter to lettertosarah@trideltaeo.org, and you could be featured in the next Trident!

Creating a Legacy in Tri Delta MARY ANN SHRINER LILLIE , Iowa State, gives back to Tri Delta in a variety of ways: She has served as alumnae chapter president of the Chicago Loop Group Alumnae Chapter, as a chapter advisor to Upsilon Chapter at Northwestern University, as a member of the Brand Innovation Team, and is currently serving on the Tri Delta Foundation Board of Trustees.
Mary Ann is also a longtime Foundation donor and has recently become a member of the Heritage Society after making a planned gift to the Tri Delta Foundation. Mary Ann shared more about what prompted her to give back to Tri Delta and leave a legacy for future generations. Why is giving to the Foundation important?
What encouraged you to become a Foundation donor? I became a Tri Delta Foundation donor early in my career. I attended a Chicago Loop Group Alumnae meeting and heard about the Crescent Fund and how it helped Tri Delta sisters in financial need. I figured that I could make a small donation each year from my fairly modest salary to assist other sisters. As my career and salary progressed, I started making annual gifts to the annual fund in memory of my mother and have become a donor to the Trilogy Fund, as well as other Founders’ Day giving campaigns. I have seen the impact my gifts can make in lives of other sisters and it is a very gratifying feeling of giving with Purpose. What drew you specifically to planned giving and becoming a member of the Heritage Society? I always knew that I would leave something to Tri Delta at the end of my life but never made it official. After discussion with my husband, I decided to join the Heritage Society. The Tri Delta Foundation made it so easy to sign up as a Heritage Society member and make my end of life donation wish known.
12
The Trident Convention 2018 www.tridelta.org
What legacy would you like to leave for future generations of Tri Deltas? I would like to leave a legacy of love and lifetime service to Tri Delta. I would also like to leave a legacy that encourages other Tri Delta sisters to join me in giving back to an organization that has given us so much—the perpetual bond of friendship for a lifetime. Why would you encourage other Tri Deltas to consider planned giving? I would encourage other sisters to consider joining the Heritage Society. It is an easy process to make your wishes known. The paperwork is simple to complete and it is such a great feeling to know that I will continue to support Tri Delta sisters in perpetuity. Among the many ways to support Tri Delta is through planned giving. Members who designate the Foundation in their wills or estate plans are recognized as members of our prestigious Heritage Society. For information on giving to Tri Delta through your will or estate plan, please contact Tawnya Braeutigam at 817.471.1908 or tbraeutigam@trideltaeo.org.

Giving to the Tri Delta Foundation is important because it is truly "sisters helping sisters." Of all the donations I make to worthy organizations, my gifts to the Tri Delta Foundation are the only gifts that directly go to assist other Tri Delta sisters in need.

foundation
Trilogy: Changing Lives Launched in 2012, Trilogy was created by Tri Deltas for Tri Deltas as a Board-directed endowment to meet the most urgent needs of our members across the Foundation’s spectrum of giving. For our members, a grant from Trilogy is transformational and lifechanging. Convention 2016 celebrated the announcement of the inaugural Trilogy recipient, Sarah Shore, Rhodes, who received a $16,000 grant from the Foundation, allowing her to graduate on time and begin pursuing plans to attend medical school. The Foundation made its second life-changing Trilogy grant in 2017 to a courageous young breast cancer survivor and Tri Delta alumna, Martha Parker, Toronto, allowing her to take much-needed time off to focus on her health and healing.
Recently, Sarah and Martha shared an update on their life today:
Sarah Shore I am proud to say that I achieved my dream and was accepted to attend medical school at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. I have chosen to defer my acceptance into medical school to pursue a master’s degree in global health policy. Because of Trilogy, I was able to graduate on time and continue on to exciting post-graduate plans. Currently, I am living in Memphis, Tennessee, and working as a research assistant in a clinical neurology lab. Research has taught me to ask questions and think critically, skills I will carry with me and continue to hone throughout my career. While working, I also took several graduate courses in public health at the University of Memphis, which sparked my interest in health policy.

The Trident Convention 2018 www.tridelta.org
While I am very eager to begin healing and building relationships with patients, I want to make endemic change. My inquisitive nature and knack for problem solving has pushed me to pursue a medical career involving research. My desire to help others on an individual level is what led me to pursue a career in medicine. However, I have realized I am passionate about serving and impacting larger populations. The grant was given to me at a time when I was questioning the feasibility of pursuing a career in medicine. Trilogy and Tri Delta have been instrumental in fostering my growth. Each of you made the realization of my dreams possible, and I sincerely thank you for donating to this fund and investing in my and Tri Delta’s future.
Martha Parker My life today is very different from what it was a year ago and even more different than what it was two years ago. I am currently two and a half months out from my last breast cancer treatment and a year out from my double mastectomy surgery. I am happy to know today that I am cancer-free, and stronger in mind and body than I’ve felt in a long time. In the past few months I’ve taken more time for myself to focus on what motivates and inspires me. I was excited last winter when the opportunity came up to volunteer as alumna advisor for Canada Alpha alongside one of my closest Tri Delta sisters. Being back in the house that I spent so much of my time in during undergrad is both nostalgic and energizing. It has allowed me to feel as though I’m giving back in even a small way to the organization that I’ve been fortunate to have gained so much from, but also has allowed me to work closer with other alumnae and the current collegians. I’ve continued to receive support from my Tri Delta sisters as I have moments of reflection back to my experience through cancer, and they continue to be there for me while I get my bearings back into life post-cancer.

As our sisterhood continues to grow and the challenges facing women today continue to mount, the need to help our sisters has never been greater. Over the next three years, our goal— announced at Convention 2018 — is to triple the impact of Trilogy, raising an additional $1 million by 2019. To date, the Tri Delta Foundation has raised $875,000 toward that goal. We all strive to Live Kind, Lead Kind, and supporting Trilogy is a beautiful way to be our kind of kind. life loyal By giving back to Tri Delta through Life Loyal, Kelly Schlegel, New Mexico, wants to ensure Tri Delta is there for the next generation. She wants women to have the wonderful college memories she had while being accepted for who they are, building lifetime friendships and being encouraged to meet their life goals. “I was a very immature 18-year-old when I started at UNM,” recalls Kelly. “So having the benefit of instant friendships and older sisters at our Tri Delta chapter to show me the college ropes was invaluable to me having a total positive college experience and helping me to grow in a safe environment. Those friendships have lasted a lifetime to this day.” Kelly also had a chance to witness lifetime membership in action at Tri Delta’s 2018 Convention, where she was inspired to become a Life Loyal Tri Delta. “At 2018 Convention, I met mom and daughter Tri Delta pairs, honor initiates, and a 90-year-old Tri Delta getting her 50-year pin. This experience taught me that Tri Delta is here for my lifetime and not just college. It is a set of values and sisterhood bonds that are as deep or deeper than family, for good times and bad, through thick and thin, and for giving a helping hand to a sister in need.”

A Gift of History When Tri Delta relocated its Executive Office in August of 2016 from Arlington, Texas, to nearby Dallas, the new space provided a great canvas for telling Tri Delta’s story. Ideas and visions began to form for what Tri Delta might want in a new museum and how we might display some of our most precious historical items. A generous donation from long-time Tri Delta volunteer leader Ginger Hicks Smith, Emory, put Tri Delta’s dreams within reach. Ginger’s long experience as an archivist and library administrator for her alma mater added a special connection to Tri Delta’s historical collection.

T
ri Delta’s large collection of its early records and artifacts stretches back to our founding at Boston University in 1888. Alpha Chapter at Boston was the original repository for its early papers and artifacts. When Founder Sarah Ida Shaw became Grand Historian in 1897, it seemed natural that the preservation of the Fraternity’s earliest records should fall to her. Bessie Leach Priddy, Adrian, took over the position in 1902 and moved our early treasures to her home. The preservation efforts of these two were continued by Amy Olgen Parmelee, Northwestern, and R. Louise Fitch, Knox,
who not only cared for the collection but used many of the Fraternity’s original documents to write two definitive histories of the organization. Margaret Haller, Cornell, and Eva Noll, Pennsylvania State, continued the care of Tri Delta’s treasures and began the task of organizing and cataloging the collection. Margaret’s brief notes about significant items and events are still found in folders and boxes throughout the collection. Eva’s detailed essays on many Tri Delta topics still serve as a starting point for many Trident articles and other research. Among Tri Delta’s earliest documents are Alpha’s first

rom storage in Bessie Leach Priddy’s upper parlor, our treasures were later stored in a simple 3 x 5 foot safe at our offices in The Chicago Daily News building. The first official “archives room” was located in the building on Michigan Avenue where our memorabilia were displayed for the first time on 40 bulletin-board “leaves” arranged on a stand like the pages of a book. It wasn’t until we moved our headquarters to Arlington, Texas, that we had our first official museum space, a formal museum displaying historical items from Tri Delta’s archives and featuring smaller displays throughout the building. As a vision for the new museum progressed, it was important to use the collection to tell our history not only through multi-media and engaging interactive displays, but to incorporate much of the original museum into the new
space. Museum Arts, Inc. of Dallas was selected as our partner in the conceptualizing, fabricating and installing the new museum. Initial meetings with Museum Arts helped determine what stories Tri Delta wanted to tell, what key pieces and events we wanted to highlight, where we wanted the displays to be located in our new space, and other important requirements. Once our vision and messages were fixed, Museum Arts produced conceptual designs, including a miniature scale model, with several options allowing us to further tailor the museum experience to Tri Delta’s needs. Models, conceptual drawings and floorplans allowed us to see how each exhibit would work in our space. Then electrical and power diagrams, reflected-ceiling plans, and other drawings were needed to ensure the exhibits and the building were a perfect fit. The creative process drew from the talents of a dozen Executive Office staff members whose contributions included copywriting, proofing,
graphic design and video creation. The results included a mix of static and interactive exhibits, many favorite pieces from Tri Delta’s previous museum, and fresh and engaging new displays. Visitors to Executive Office are greeted by the first of these new displays in the entry foyer in a large interactive fixture that features a choice of seven short videos, allowing a quick introduction to Tri Delta, our history and values. The current videos include an overview of Tri Delta, our Kindness initiative, our Founding, a Trilogy recipient, our Distinguished Deltas, an interview with Ginger Hicks Smith regarding her contribution to the new museum, and details regarding historical items on display in a lighted case below. The heart of the museum is flanked by glass etchings of Founders Sarah Ida Shaw and Eleanor Dorcas Pond. In the cases located behind each

Two large kiosks highlight the importance of Convention, the history of The Trident, and the experiences of our collegiate and alumnae members. A Sister Search touchscreen display allows members to find lost sisters. We honor the leadership of our past Fraternity Presidents in a wall of individual portraits which faces a biographical display of our current president, Kimberlee Di Fede Sullivan, Pepperdine. This display also commemorates our commitment to children’s cancer charities, dating back to 1947, including local and regional efforts and our national partnership with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The entire museum is focused on technology, interactivity and content that can be changed and updated easily. Also, portability will allow us to share the archives with as many people as possible as we “spread Tri Delta’s influence abroad” by transporting the two mobile displays to events and Conventions. On Monday, July 2, 100 guests attended the official dedication ceremony and were treated to a sneak peek at the museum. At the dedication, Ginger Hicks Smith spoke about how being part of building Tri Delta’s museum is the perfect connection between her membership in Tri Delta and her 38-year career as an archivist at Emory University. “I hope that Tri Delta’s exceptionally interesting history informs and inspires all of us,” Ginger said. “I hope that preserving it, interpreting it and displaying it will excite and energize us all to be part of a present and a future that are distinctive, that are dynamic, that are worthy of the best that is in us, not only now but always, both as individual members and as an assembly of women with shared values.”

Empowering Women at LEADDD By Content Manager Amanda Milford, Texas/Arlington
The conference officially kicked off on July 1 with an opening “regiception” and welcome from Fort Worth Mayor and Tri Delta alumna Betsy Price, Texas Tech, who spoke about her Tri Delta experience. “I don't think of myself as a politician, I think of myself as a servant,” Betsy said. “My time in Tri Delta solidified my commitment to serve.” On Monday morning, attendees were treated to a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity, as they heard from Laura Bush, First Lady of the United States (2001-2009), who shared the importance of giving back to our communities and service to others and participated in a Q&A session with Tri Delta sister and Emmy-awarding winning journalist Karen Borta, Texas/Arlington.
Empowering Women
Throughout the day, attendees had the opportunity to attend a variety of workshops addressing topics such as: Women & Networking, Women & Wages, Women & Transition, Women & Leadership, Women & Investing and Women & Philanthropy. In her workshop, “Collecting Relationships,” Tri Delta alumna, volunteer and Managing Director for Beautycounter Laura Stenovec, Denver, shared best
practices and resources to help attendees master the art of networking. “As a younger alumnae member, LEADDD not only taught me about the importance of connecting and networking with your sisters but also provided me with the tools and opportunities to do so,” said Faith Liptak Gilchrist, Oregon. In Women & Investing, Honor Initiate Emily Musser, Millikin, Vice President, Client Relations & Business Development for AMG National Trust Bank, and Tri Delta Foundation Trustee Janet Timmerman Miller, Toledo, senior partner in Rowland & Company, an Atlanta-based investment advisory firm, participated in a panel discussion. They shared insights into developing personal investment policies, socially responsible investing and getting your money to work for your purpose. In the Women & Philanthropy workshop, President and CEO of Dallas Women’s Foundation Roslyn Dawson Thompson shared the importance of supporting women philanthropies and inspired attendees to think about the way they give and to whom they give. “It doesn’t matter if it’s one dollar, one million dollars or one billion dollars; every dollar and every hour you give really counts in this world. With those dollars and hours, you truly are making it better for all,” Roslyn said. In her impactful keynote address, Heidi Guest, California/Davis, Senior Director of On-Air Media and Leadership Development for philosophy, shared the power of personal leadership, encouraging everyone to “lead from where they stand.” “One critical element as you begin or continue your personal leadership journey is acceptance – accepting who you are and making the most of it,” Heidi told attendees, as she stressed the importance of discovering what you do better than anyone else and focusing on doing that with excellence.

July 1-2, more than 325 women gathered at the Gaylord Texan in Dallas, Texas, for LEADDD 2018, Tri Delta's inaugural leadership development conference hosted by women for women. The event featured keynote speakers and workshops designed to empower women to lead and serve in their careers, communities and families.

LEADDD also provided an opportunity for Tri Delta to tackle the challenges women face in the workplace, including the gender pay gap and the gender gap in corporate leadership. Tri Delta partnered with the American Association of University Women (AAUW) to offer AAUW’s Start Smart and Work Smart Workshops at LEADDD to help women take an important step toward closing the gender pay gap. Attendees had the opportunity to attend the AAUW Start Smart session to learn how to negotiate their salary and benefits package for their first or a new job. And through facilitated discussion in AAUW’s Work Smart session, attendees learned how to “work smart” and develop an arsenal of persuasive responses and other negotiation strategies, and how to articulate their personal value to help them negotiate a raise, promotion or improved benefits. Closing out the conference was Tri Delta Executive Board Director Sandy Beach Lin, Toledo, who spoke about Paradigm for Parity, a coalition of business leaders dedicated to addressing the corporate leadership gender gap. Sandy built her career through the sales and marketing functions, leading to general management roles, the most recent of which was Chief Executive Officer of Calisolar Inc. (now Silicor Materials), a provider of raw materials for the solar industry. Sandy is a founder and co-chair for Paradigm for Parity and it was hard to not be passionate about creating change after her inspirational closing remarks. As Sandy explained,
Paradigm for Parity is committed to achieving full gender parity in corporate leadership positions by 2030. “Our goal as P4P leaders is to create corporate cultures where women can succeed and thrive as leaders,” Sandy said. “Tying this back to Tri Delta, I want to see business environments where our collegians can succeed and grow as they enter the workforce. I want to see corporate cultures where each of you can grow and succeed. From this group of women who were dissatisfied with the status quo came a movement. From today’s great content will come steps that each of you can take to make the changes most important to you.” Attendees left LEADDD feeling empowered and inspired. Amanda Conklin, Stockton, said, “Attending LEADDD was one of the most impactful experiences I’ve ever had. The workshops were extremely eye opening and empowering. I felt like a new person by the end!” “LEADDD gave me the opportunity to connect with experienced, inspiring women across generations and in many different professional fields,” said Jillian Stoewer, Puget Sound. “Being surrounded by such strong women who were all looking to improve and grow was a truly rewarding experience.” LEADDD is another example of how Tri Delta—as an organization founded by women for women—is boldly leading the way in developing and empowering women. And 2018 was just the beginning. After piloting LEADDD in Dallas, Tri Delta will take this new conference on the road beginning in spring 2019.

At the Awards Gala, the Tri Delta Foundation also announced its goal to raise $1 million by 2019 for the Trilogy Fund to continue making life-changing grants to Tri Deltas. Since 2016, more than 140 kind and generous sisters have stepped up to support our members through Trilogy. Executive Board Director Nicole Hughes, Washington State, shared more about Tri Delta’s passion for serving others and how our local alumnae chapters demonstrate kindness through philanthropy. “We’re so proud of the work of our alumnae at the local level and regional level,” said Nicole. “Thank you for modeling bravery, boldness and kindness for our collegiate members. Because of you, Tri Delta continues to lead the way in philanthropy – often setting the standard for fraternities and sororities. Members of both the local Dallas and Fort Worth Alumnae Chapters were on hand to share more about the chapters’ Cookies & Castles fundraisers, a gingerbread-decorating event held every year around the holidays to raise money for Cook Children’s in Fort Worth, Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Dallas, and the Tri Delta Foundation. Tri Deltas got hands-on experience in hosting their own event by decorating their own gingerbread cottages. To get into the holiday spirit, the Convention Chorus serenaded the group with popular holiday songs, and by the end of the luncheon, the ballroom was filled with hundreds of unique and colorfully decorated gingerbread cottages.
After the Alumnae Celebration, attendees and their families had a chance to explore Dallas/Fort Worth. Tours included the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza, the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum and AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys. But one of the most popular destinations was the brand new Ginger Hicks Smith Museum & Archives at Executive Office. Tri Deltas celebrated the Fourth of July with a family picnic, followed by a fireworks extravaganza to close out a day filled with fun, family and friendship.
Convention wrapped up Thursday morning with Pansy Brunch, with Fraternity President Kimberlee Di Fede Sullivan conducting special milestone ceremonies for our sisters celebrating 25 and 50 years of Tri Delta membership. Fifty sisters celebrated 25 years of membership with the Silver Circle ceremony, while four sisters celebrated 50 years with the Golden Circle ceremony. Following the ceremonies was the official installation of the 2018-20 Executive Board and a meaningful and touching volunteer oath, led by Kimberlee, which left a lasting impression. “The love and appreciation all the women at Convention have for our organization is captivating and contagious,” said Stephanie Lamb, Cal State/Northridge. “President

Kimberlee Di Fede Sullivan’s emotional closure to the officer installation ceremony stuck with me as it shows how truly dedicated our volunteers are to strengthening and supporting our sorority.” Convention 2018 concluded with a favorite Tri Delta tradition, roll call and candle lighting, followed by 600 sisters joining together to sing Alpha Theta Phi. As Julia Griffith, Wisconsin, so eloquently described: “The roll call of chapters will probably always be the most meaningful and memorable part of Convention. It starts with just a few candles and then suddenly you look around and the room glows with the warmth of the generations past and those Tri Deltas to come. It reminds me that my bonds aren't just with my chapter and close friends but with this immense network of strong women. It also reminds me that when I feel like my single candle isn’t enough light to guide the way, I have others I can rely on, who burn and love steadfastly.” But before Tri Deltas left Dallas-Fort Worth, they were treated to a special announcement about Convention 2020. Fraternity President Kimberlee Sullivan’s daughter, Allison, joined her mom on stage to announce that Tri Delta is going to Disney
World! Convention 2020 will be held in Orlando, Florida, July 10-12, 2020. Closing Convention, Kimberlee said, “I hope our time together has renewed and strengthened the perpetual bonds of friendship we all hold dear and that you — my brave, bold and kind sisters — are inspired to live, learn and lead – with Purpose – in all that you do.” No doubt, sisters left reconnected, reinvigorated and inspired to lead with kindness. Alta Valliant Compton, Colorado State, had this to say about her Convention experience: “I knew when I joined this sisterhood 14 years ago I was joining something bigger than myself but I don’t think I really comprehended how much bigger until this week. Being in a room of over 600 women listening to the words of our Founders and being reminded of the promise we all made was incredibly powerful. Knowing I helped to shape our future by voting at the business meeting, seeing the selfless leadership of our current and past board members, the joy and excitement of our collegiate members, and the dedication of alumnae from all over North America made me so grateful that 18-year-old me said yes and joined this group of brave, bold and kind women.”

Governing Tri Delta By Director of Public Relations Jason Paul Gomez
The Bylaws of Delta Delta Delta guide the Executive Board’s governance of the organization, and are one of the most important legal documents of any organization, corporation or association. They outline the day-to-day rules of the organization and provide guidelines for running Tri Delta smoothly. In essence, the Bylaws could be compared to a blueprint of a house, providing a solid structure, foundation with windows and doors for exits. At Convention 2018, there were 31 amendments proposed by the Bylaws Committee to the voting delegation and presented by the Bylaws Committee: Chair Melissa Hunter Muller, Wichita State, Deborah Johnson, Nevada, and Andrea Schaneman Stritzke, Nebraska. The Business Meeting was presided over by Fraternity President Kimberlee Di Fede Sullivan, Pepperdine, who served as Convention Chair. Additionally, the conduction of the Business Meeting was overseen by Parliamentarian Carol Bussing Farmer, Baker. As each amendment was presented, there was discussion allowed on the floor. All members of the Fraternity are allowed a voice, yet only the voting delegates of the Convention are allowed to vote on the business of the Fraternity. Many of the amendments proposed made slight changes to technical wording of existing Bylaws. Other specific amendments allowed members to engage in healthy debate on whether they stood in favor or opposed. 34
The Trident Convention 2018 www.tridelta.org
Amendment 14 proposed the establishment of a new standing committee within Tri Delta, the Fraternity Membership Status Committee. This committee, piloted during the 2016-2018 biennium, focuses solely on individual member discipline and membership status matters – thus relieving the members of the Executive Board of this responsibility and allowing them to focus on governance. Chair of the piloted Membership Status Committee Melissa Booth Hall, Centre, provided vital information on the work of the committee this biennium, including the time commitments, responsibilities and qualifications of the committee members who would take on this very important responsibility in Tri Delta. Another amendment which provided engaging conversation was Amendment 24, which deleted the requirement for every new member to have a written reference from a collegiate or alumna member before being extended a bid for membership. While Tri Delta continues to encourage the use of references during the recruitment process, this amendment changes the operations dynamic for chapters who do not receive many references who must then complete the required paperwork as they are inviting PNMs to membership. Collegiate and alumnae members on the Convention floor discussed the value and importance of references – specifically in “mega” chapters with over 400 members. These chapters may see an upwards of 3,000 potential new members in recruitment and a reference allows for the chapters to place more value on those PNMs with a reference. Further points were made by members of the Inclusion Task Force that eliminating the requirement to have a reference also removed barriers to membership for PNMs who may not have connections to the Greek community. Following respectful and healthy debate on all 31 amendments, the Convention body voted on and approved all proposed amendments to the Bylaws. Tri Delta held a successful Business Meeting and the future of the Fraternity remains strong in part to the diligence and dedication of the delegates and Convention attendees.

of the most important parts of Tri Delta’s Convention is the legislation that occurs during the Business Meeting. As the governing body of the Fraternity, the collegiate and alumnae voting delegates gather to hear, discuss and vote on amendments to the Bylaws and resolutions presented before the assembled delegation. Every Convention, the Bylaws are amended through proposed amendments submitted by members, volunteers, committees, Executive Office staff and the Executive Board.

The Haller Award was established in 1994, in honor of
Ernestine Block Grigsby Award Ernestine Block Grigsby, Colorado, served as Fraternity President in 1936-1940 and Chairman of the National Panhellenic Conference from 1959-1961. She demonstrated lifelong loyalty to Tri Delta and to the fraternal world as an alumna. This prestigious award is presented by the Executive Board each biennium to an alumna who, through her loyalty and dedication to Tri Delta, has given outstanding service to her local alumnae chapter.
2018 Awardee Carol Bussing Farmer, Baker Alumnae and collegiate members in the Kansas City, Missouri, area view Carol Bussing Farmer, Baker, as the epitome of a brave, bold and kind Tri Delta woman. She has been a driving force in keeping the Kansas City, Missouri/Shawnee Mission, Kansas Alumnae Chapter and Lambda Chapter at Baker going strong since she became a member in 1966. Carol’s involvement in Tri Delta began when she was initiated into Lambda Chapter, but it didn’t end there. Her volunteerism with the Fraternity spans four decades and counting which proves her lifelong loyalty to Tri Delta. “The opportunities that Tri Delta has afforded me the last 52 years are beyond words for me,” Carol said. “Tri Delta shaped who I am today because of the opportunities I received to work with inspiring women, to lead others to realize their potential and to build cherished friendships.”

Since 1972, Carol has served Lambda Chapter as an alumna advisor, scholarship advisor, centennial celebration chair, a member of the Lambda House Corporation Board – 21 years as vice president and 10 years as major renovation co-chair – and as Panhellenic advisor from 2012 to present. In addition, Carol founded the Baker University Alumnae Greek Council several years ago in order to promote the Greek life system on Baker’s campus. She has served as president of this council since 2012. She even received Lambda Outstanding Alumna of the Year in 1979. As a member of the Kansas City, Missouri/Shawnee Mission, Kansas Alumnae Chapter, Carol has been in charge of membership since 1983 – continually keeping the chapter around 100 dues-paying members. She has also served the
alumnae chapter as president, yearbook chair, newsletter chair, Pansy Brunch chair and Founders’ Day chair. As a volunteer, she has served in the philanthropy roles of the Tri Delta Art Auction, A Chance for Children and Brush Away the Tears committee member. Her sisters speak highly of her as someone who consistently makes herself available to offer knowledge, guidance or even just an extra set of eyes or hands to any alumnae chapter projects. “Carol has shown her love for Tri Delta and her members since her college days,” said Beth Roller, Baker, alumnae chapter president. “She has spent countless hours working to ensure that our alumnae chapter succeeds, and is always willing to volunteer when a sister needs assistance.” Upon receiving the Ernestine Block Grigsby Award at Convention 2018, Carol offered these words in her acceptance speech: “It was 50 years ago that I attended my first Convention as a collegiate president. There were future Fraternity leaders and lifetime volunteers in that room in 1968. And as we sit here tonight, Tri Delta’s future is here in this ballroom. I hope you will choose a lifetime of steadfast fidelity to Tri Delta. I promise that your life will be enriched by your loyalty far beyond your expectations.” Congratulations to the 2018 Ernestine Block Grigsby Award Honorable Mentions: Donna Larson, Minnesota State/Mankato Kathy Parr, Texas Mary Kate Walton, Southern Mississippi
