It’s a unit of measure for the energy in food. First defined in France in the early 1800s, a food calorie (kilocalorie) is the amount of heat (energy) needed to raise the temperature of 1,000 grams (a liter) of water 1° Celsius. Researchers measure calories by using a “bomb calorimeter,” a small chamber in which a food is burned to heat water; the hotter the water, the higher the calorie count. Food companies today don’t need to burn their products to figure out the calories in them—they simply add up the calories of the ingredients, based on standard databases.

S.P.A.R by Stephen Gregg

Re-nata and Maria have questions about their future. Who doesn't? But when Renata convinces Maria to hold a séance, the girls get more than they bargained for. They conjure up a mysterious figure who answers their questions but also tells them how he knows the answers: they're fictional. Renata and Maria are characters in a play called S.P.A.R., a play written by the mysterious man. He proves he's their maker by predicting the future, twisting reality and finally showing them the audience. Renata's not happy about being in S.P.A.R. The play becomes a contest of wills between author and character. But it's not a fair fight: after all, he has the script. And when Renata tries to enlist the audience's help, the author proves that the audience is fictional as well!

Gangster Tour: Experience St Paul in the Roaring 20s & 30s

We will begin our trip by touring the Wabasha Street Caves, where our local gangsters loved to hide out. We will explore the sandstone caves, the Castle Royal, a rambunctious and romantic, depression era nightclub where Big Bands appeared. Next we will board the bus with a costumed gangster as our tour guide and begin our adventure through the streets of St. Paul during its roaring hoodlum heyday on an exploration of Crooks, Crime and Corruption. See sites where the infamous lived, socialized, committed crimes and where many were brought to justice. Drive past the Landmark Center where some of the FBI's most notorious criminals were tried including Ma Barker and her five sons. We will stop for lunch at the Tavern on Grand; please choose your meal when registering: Fried Walleye Basket or Grilled Chicken Breast Basket. Both meals include fries, coleslaw and beverage. First stop will be our lunch at Coyote Moon Grille Restaurant, overlooking the Territory Golf Club, in St. Cloud. Menu: Lunch buffet with a couple of entrees, side dishes, salads, beverage and dessert. Then on to the Paramount Theatre, a turn-of-the-century historic 700 seat theatre that was renovated in 1998, for the performance of “Ring of Kerry”. The phenomenal, exciting St. Paul Irish dancers, Ring of Kerry, are bursting with energy and music that captures the heart of listeners. Five engaging musicians sing and play several instruments. Sounds range from the thunder of the Irish bodhran drum to the sparkle of the hammered dulcimer; from the lilt and rhythm of fiddle and guitar, to the haunting wails of flutes and pennywhistles. All teachers are licensed through the Mn. Dept of Education and have a variety of experiences. Most classes offer child care for siblings eight weeks through five years of age who are not enrolled in the class. Join us!
