Program Goal

The goal of ECFE is to strengthen families through education and support for all caregivers. Parents are their children’s first and most important teacher and ECFE staff are here to support you. All families are welcome and invited to attend!

Why begin at birth?

Brain research confirms that the first three years are critical in a child’s development, especially in the area of language, social and thinking skills. Research shows that when parents are involved in children’s education the benefits include:

Online Registration will receive a class confirmation email. There is no confirmation for mail-in and drop-off registration. However ECFE will contact you by phone if a class is full or if there are changes. What are ECFE classes like? Separating Classes include: Parent-Child Time … begin with activities and playtime together appropriate to the age of the child. Parent Discussion … meet with other parents and a licensed parent educator to share, learn and gain support on parenting, child development, discipline and current issues. Children … participate independently and learn through guided play; individual, small and large group, including snack time, stories and songs to promote growth in all areas!

Non-Separating Classes Parents and children play, explore and learn together. ECFE rooms are designed with learning centers so that children learn through interaction with their environment and you.

Higher test scores and grades Higher post-secondary enrollment Fewer behavioral concerns Fewer placements in special education

Proud of our staff ...

All ECFE teachers have as a minimum a four-year college degree and have fulfilled the Minnesota teaching licensing requirements in Parent Education and/or Early Childhood Education. Our educators are all experienced, nurturing teachers.

The goal of the Minnesota Reading Corps is to help every child become a successful reader by the end of third grade. Research has shown this starts even earlier than preschool! To expand your child’s development, each classroom will implement strategies from Reading Corps in large and small groups. Some classroom will also have Reading Corps members to work with students. All classrooms will have a literacy rich environment and schedule to promote skill building and active learning. 16

EARLY CHILDHOOD SCREENING Ready for school success? Make Your Early Childhood Screening Appointment We screen children at 3 1/2 years of age. What is screening?

It is a snapshot of your child’s growth and development and can identify any health or learning concerns so your child will be ready for school success. Children attending school in Minnesota must have a record of completion. During screening we will check vision, hearing, cognitive and motor skills, speech and language, social/emotional development, and an immunization review. Goals: • Find out how your child is growing and developing • Answer parent questions and address concerns • Connect families with resources In order to screen children at an age when we can provide service to your family, it is critical for you to make an appointment and attend. Missed or cancelled appointments make it difficult to get all children screened at the appropriate age. Thank you for your commitment to your appointment time. To make this free appointment it is best to call when your child is about three years four months.

Early Learning Center 3203 68th St. E. IGH, 55076 651-306-7520

Lincoln Center 357 9th Ave. N SSP, 55075 651-306-3623 Room B03A (lower level)

If your child has been screened in another district or at Head Start, a copy of screening results is required for kindergarten registration. Screening is a vital piece to kindergarten success and is required for kindergarten entrance. Please call if your child was screened elsewhere. Thank you.

There are several programs available to help children who are showing delays in understanding concepts, speech and language, motor development, vision or hearing and social skills. Your child may be eligible for a developmental assessment and services designed to help him/her grow. For information call your school district’s program. “I Can” Statements Curriculum

Early Learning Advisory Council They are awesome!

Our early learning programs use a variety of resources to develop and implement curriculum. Staff have developed “I Can” statements for children from birth to kindergarten, aligned with state standards and school district benchmarks to provide all children with school readiness skills. The “I Can” statements have been adapted from the MN Department of Education’s Early Childhood Indicators of Progress for the following age groups: birth to 18 months, 18 to 36 months, three-year-olds and four-year-olds. Staff are looking forward to sharing “I Can” information with you this year.

The Early Learning Advisory Council (ELAC) includes participating Early Learning/ECFE parents from IGH and SSP, staff and community members. You are invited to participate and we welcome you! We understand that early childhood years are very busy so we appreciate any commitment you can provide to our programs. If you would like more information, please email ELAC at sspecfe.org. ELAC supports Early Learning in a variety of ways: assisting in program planning, fundraising, sponsoring family events such as field trips and concerts, outreach to the community and fostering an awareness of our programs. A big thank you to each present and past member for their continued support and involvement.
