Enjoy the autumn colors and the excitement of harvest time when you visit the apple orchard at Carpenter Nature Center. Fall River Cruise
Join your friends from around the state as we take a 2 hour narrated cruise of the Mississippi River and view the beautiful fall colors. We will cruise aboard the Anson Northrup paddle boat up the river from downtown St. Paul to the Great River National Park to Fort Snelling. We will depart from Harriet Island, located across the river from Downtown St. Paul. A box lunch with a sandwich, salad, dessert and beverage is included. Come enjoy the “best light show in Saint Paul.” There will be more than 60 holidaythemed light sculptures and animated displays. This fitness class is like no other. Join this class to exercise AND take home a 30 minute fitness program that you will be accountable to practice for an entire week. Meet 1 hour, weekly for a demonstration, Q&A, and to practice the program. Exercises will include cardiovascular activity, strength training and stretches. Fall Paddle & Picnic
Grab a friend or family member and join us for a day on the St. Croix River. Enjoy the cliffs, colors and wildlife during the 3-4 hour downstream kayak. Cream Tea & History
The LeDuc Historic Estate is hosting a historic walking tour of the city’s waterfalls as well as a tour of the estate. After the tour, tea and scones will be served in the Dining Room & Parlor. The was built during the Civil War and after the war, the family moved back to their Hastings home, which stayed in the family for 75 years. Come enjoy and learn the rich history of this beautiful area and home. Cream scones are a site specialty and always made fresh!

Color Your World Glass Mosaics
ow is the time to check off, "Learn to do Mosaics" from your bucket list. This is the perfect N class to learn this ancient but easy art form. These driver improvement courses are taught by MN HWY Safety and Research Center trained instructors. The class will explore changes in laws, the latest vehicle technology and provide you with easy to use defensive driving tips. In addition, we will explore traffic safety and accident prevention. Course completion allows for a 10% reduction on automobile insurance premiums for those age 55 and over. An eight hour course is initially required, followed by a four hour refresher class every three years. All driver improvement courses must be refreshed every three years to keep the discount in force. No written or behind-the-wheel tests will be given. We are excited to announce that Inver Grove Heights Parks and Recreation has been awarded a grant from the National Council on Aging to host the Aging Mastery Program (AMP)! This is a comprehensive and fun approach to aging well that encourages people to take actions to enhance their health, financial well-being, social connections, and overall quality of life. The Panama Canal’s expansion project, Third Set of Locks Project, was completed on June 26, 2016. This project doubled the capacity of the Panama Canal by adding a new lane of traffic, allowing for a larger number of ships and increasing the width and depth of the lanes and locks allowing larger ships to pass. Climate Change, What Does it Mean for West St. Paul?
Join Suzanne Savanick Hansen for a presentation and discussion of the climate change and West St. Paul. Suzanne was an official observer to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Bonn, Germany in 2014 and took students to the UN climate talks in Paris in 2015. She will discuss the international and local challenges posed by climate change and discuss what is currently underway to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at the local level. Climate Change Part II - Tour of Macalester College
Join us for a tour of climate change projects underway at Macalester College. Macalester's president signed the American College and University Presidents' Climate Commitment and has committed to climate neutrality by 2025. Painting with Colored Pencils Beyond the Coloring Book
For the beginner who wants to learn shading, layering, blending and many, many more techniques that will turn any picture or photograph into an original work of art. Class includes over $37 worth of supplies that you will own. Participants will leave class with a unique framed collage of six completed colored pencil works of art; see above. The fun-loving monks of Saint Bernard’s monastery are in a jam. Abbot Costello and his four beleaguered brethren have just learned that a real estate developer is about to turn their monastery into a gambling hall called Bernie’s Casino Royale. Unless the merry Men in Brown can raise $250,000 by midnight, they are done for. Luckily, the Brothers have a divine plan. They have rented religious radio station WGOD for the night and are hosting a radiothon fundraiser with plenty of singing, dancing and vaudeville routines. Abbot Costello, Brother Lee Love, Brother Brooks, Brother Clarence and Brother Forte all take turns strutting their stuff, and the pledged donations from the listeners started streaming in. But, unbeknownst to the other four, one of the monks is really a devil in disguise and is out to sabotage their plan. Good and evil race to beat a midnight deadline in this hilarious hit musical. Octagon Victorian House at Christmas
This unusual eight-sided house, located in Hudson, Wisconsin, was built in 1855 and has recently been beautifully restored. It was home to Judge John Moffat who came to Hudson from New York. It is furnished with artifacts and antiques from early life in the St. Croix Valley. The Octagon House will be decorated for Christmas, both inside and out, including the carriage house. It is truly a marvelous sight to see. The tour includes a holiday buffet at Lake Elmo Inn. ECFE classes are designed to strengthen families and support children’s healthy growth and development. TriDistrict Community Education is pleased to announce a partnership with the YMCA in West St. Paul to offer Lifeguard Training. This course will follow the blended format combining both in person and online class format. Please note the follow prerequisites below: Prerequisites
• Must be 15 years old on or before the final day of the course. • Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may use front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. • Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. • Complete the following events in 1 minute, 40 seconds: • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. Face may be in or out of the water. • Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7-10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so they are able to get a breath. • Exit the water without using a ladder or steps. Driver Education Classroom and Behind the Wheel Our Driver Education program is taught by certified licensed instructors. The state of Minnesota requires anyone under the age of 18 wishing to obtain a MN Driver’s License to complete an approved course in driver education. This course must include a minimum of 30 hours of classroom instruction and six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction. The classroom includes lecture, class discussion, guest speakers, films, written work from textbooks and written tests. Behind-the-wheel training allows a student to practice driving on public streets and highways with an instructor in a dual-control (two brake) car.
The fee is $375. Payment can be made in full at the time of registration or pay $175 at the beginning of class and $200 at the end of the 30 hours prior to the student receiving the 'blue' card. Parents are invited to attend the Point of Impact, Teen Driver Safety Awareness Program. This course is FREE to parents. Photograph Use Policy
Photographs, videos and other documentation taken at school or Community Education activities may be submitted to newspapers, used on district web sites, social media sites or appear in publications. Written requests not to publish photos of specific students will be honored.
If there is insufficient enrollment for a program, you will be notified by phone or e-mail and you will receive a full refund. Please include a phone number on your registration form where you can be contacted during the day. UCare members may be eligible for a $15 discount on most classes in this catalog. If a class is less than $15, the member may take the class free of charge. UCare for Senior members are limited to one $15 discount per calendar year. Members must be on UCare at the time of registration and through the duration of the class(es). Income Tax Deduction and Credit for Education Related Expenses
The MN deduction allows parents to subtract from their taxable income up to $2,500 for qualifying expenses on behalf of each child in grades seven to 12 and up to $1,625 for each child in grades kindergarten to six. The list of qualifying expenses includes all Community Education classes, tutoring, academic summer school and camps and up to $200 of the cost of a computer or education-related software.

The combined Community Education Advisory Council for South St. Paul Public Schools, Inver Grove Heights Community Schools and West St. Paul-Mendota Heights-Eagan Area Schools promotes the philosophy and concept of Community Education. Members represent citizens, School District employees and municipal representatives who advise Community Education staff members in the planning, implementation and evaluation of departmental activities and programs. The council meets at 4:30 p.m. on the third Tuesday of September, October, November, January, March and May. The meetings are open to the public.
