ABOUT COMMUNITY EDUCATION Community Education is an educational philosophy that stresses citizen involvement in the identification of community needs and interests. It exists in all Minnesota school districts and has three goals: • To provide lifelong learning opportunities for learners of all ages, backgrounds and needs • To promote and develop community support for K-12 education • To build strong communities that allow citizens to achieve their greatest potential

hello

HELLO

Letter from Boomer Advisory Coucil Members

community

Jodie Belknap Jack Benke

Let me introduce myself, I am Jodie Belknap and I made the Boomer cut-off! This surprised even me. Do you know if you are between the ages of 50-67 years old, you too are a 'Baby Boomer?' This past spring I joined other 'Baby Boomers' from the community on an Advisory Council to help develop and shape a program that is specific to 'Baby Boomers' in our community. I am so enjoying the conversations and work we have been doing to create the Boomers, More or Less program with TriDistrict Community Education. This fall we are kicking off the program with great classes and events, turn to page 20 to find out more. The way I see it, this will be another adventure in my life, quite possibly the best one yet!

My name is Jack Benke. I am one of the founding members of the Boomers, More or Less Advisory Council. I am excited about this new program because I believe it is something that will benefit residents in our growing demographic. We are offering interesting educational programming and fun activities to help us all prepare for what may be ahead, staying physically fit, socially active, and ready to explore this next stage in our lives. At my age, I would be considered an ‘experienced boomer' therefore, I hope to share my knowledge and experience with others. I look forward to meeting you at one of our upcoming events!

For more information about Boomers, More or Less, turn to page 20!

Hapkido means “The Korean Art of Self Defense” or “way of coordinating power.” It is considered a “Soft” Martial Art, because it uses circular motion, redirection of energy, and the use of the opponent’s energy rather than direct force. This style of self-defense is more effective in street style attacks. Training is a blend of traditional Hapkido and Combat Style Hapkido. Training includes self-defense techniques, forms and sparring. Some of the techniques used in Hapkido are often used in Jiu Ji. Join us for a one night intro to Pickle Ball. Our instructor will give you basic instruction of how the game is played. At the end of class there will be an opportunity to sign-up for continued playing time. One of the best things about a Pickle Ball game (unlike tennis) is that even if you’ve never played a racket sport in your life, you can be playing and having a blast within the first hour. Here are the top 5 reasons to learn the game: #5: You don’t have to go so far to chase a ball #4: The rallies last longer #3: The ball is slower moving and easier to control #2: The smaller court makes it easier to laugh, talk (and occasionally trash-talk) the other players #1: Winning isn’t about speed, power or strength. It’s about patience, strategy and placement. Equipment provided Tuesday, Sept. 24 6:30 -7:30 p.m. #6360-F13 1 Session - $6 Emerson Park, 1024 Gorman Avenue, WSP SEPT. - DEC. 2013

In just a few hours, you can learn enough secrets of the trade to give you years of musical enjoyment. How do we do it? While regular piano teachers teach note reading, piano professionals use chords. And you can learn all the chords you will need to play any song in this one session. Any song. Any style. Any key. If you can find middle C and know the meaning of Every Good Boy Does Fine, you already know enough to enroll in this workshop. Total beginners can request a free pamphlet on the treble clef. You'll learn how to form the three main types of chords, and how to handle different keys and time signatures! A workbook and practice CD are included in the registration fee. Church Basement Ladies at Plymouth Playhouse

We will arrive at the Plymouth Playhouse. Lunch will be served buffet style in a banquet room. Menu: Baked Chicken. After lunch, we will move into the theater and see the matinee performance: The Last Potluck Supper. This is the fifth Church Basement Ladies musical. It is 1979, the day of the church Centennial Celebration and past parishioners have gathered to share hot dish, bars and stories from the last one hundred years. As the women work in the kitchen these shared memories burst into life, through a series of flashbacks. Travel back to 1897 and meet Vivian’s grandmother, one of the founding members of the church. See Karin as a newlywed, cautiously navigating her way through the politics of the kitchen. Be there on that day in 1944 when Mavis first barreled her way through the swinging door. As they time jump through a Century, these ladies manage to serve up a rib-tickling panorama of the changes in the kitchen without spilling a drop of their egg coffee. In the little village of Anatevka, Tevye, a poor milkman, is trying to keep his family’s traditions in place. Yet, times are changing. On a cold, clear, moonless night in the middle of winter, all is not quite what it seems in the remote, mythical town of Almost, Maine. As the northern lights hover in the star-filled sky above, Almost's residents find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and often hilarious ways. Knees are bruised. Hearts are broken. But the bruises heal, and the hearts mend-almost-in this delightful midwinter night's love story.
