Lora Lambert IGH Early Learning Program Coordinator

Welcome to TriDistrict Community Education! As the Inver Grove Heights Early Learning Coordinator, I have the honor of working with our youngest learners and the people who care about them. I have been an educator for 30+ years. I taught in urban Texas, the Alaskan bush, and in Minnesota where I worked with Head Start before coming to IGH almost two years ago. During this beautiful late summer weather I enjoy early evenings on my garden deck with a good book, and have recently signed up for some cooking classes--hoping you really can teach an old dog new tricks! Most of all, I treasure time spent with my two grown sons, Brooks and Brady. Working with the IGH Early Learning program has been an exciting journey. We are continually striving to build our early childhood program to better meet the dynamic needs of today’s families. Through TriDistrict Community Education, we work in partnership with families, childcare providers, community groups and educators to ensure each child is engaged in meaningful and joyful learning that leads to success in school and in life. Programs include Early Childhood Family Education, Community Preschool, Early Childhood Screening, Links to Literacy and Preschool Academy of Powerful Parents. On August 1st, we moved into the brand new Inver Grove Heights Early Learning Center and are so excited to be in this beautiful new space! In addition to housing all the programs mentioned above, it also provides room for Head Start and Early Childhood Special Education along with offices for Spartan Kids’ Care and Birth to Three Services. On behalf of TriDistrict Community Education programs, I invite you to join us for the Grand Opening on Thursday, September 11th from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. I love Community Education because it truly IS a community – and more importantly, a community builder. You need only to browse this catalog to appreciate all the ways Community Education connects each of us to new learning, new ideas, and to each other. For me, the arrival of the Community Ed catalog garners the same excitement that I had as a child when the Sears Christmas catalog arrived in the mail. Even now, I can’t wait to see what programs will spark an interest or fill a need! Enjoy looking through the pages to find what's right for you! Lora Lambert, IGH Early Learning Program Coordinator

Facial Lines & Skin Nourishment NEW!

Gather your girlfriends and come for an evening of fun, laughter and learning. Want to know what those pesky wrinkles mean, how to slow the aging process and how to nourish your skin naturally? 1) Learn the meaning behind lines on your face: facial lines tell the story of your life. Instead of looking in the mirror and seeing just wrinkles, join us to explore what they mean. The lines on your forehead speak of what you have learned about yourself, how accepting you are of these lessons and if you have completed the lesson. Do you wear joy or sorrow lines around your eyes? These are some examples of the most common lines on the face we will cover, plus enjoy the opportunity to ask of more specific lines unique to you! 2) Explore nutritional foods for beautiful skin: you literally are what you eat! Your skin is the largest organ system in your body and needs to be nourished! We will dive in to explore some of the best foods to support skin health beyond just drinking plenty of water, discuss how what you put inside your body affects what you look like on the outside and answer any burning questions you may have. 3) Make your own nutritional face mask for use at home: After learning what to put inside your body, we will discuss the importance of what you apply to your skin. We will offer a list of what to avoid, make suggestions on quality topicals, but most importantly we will discuss how quality skin care can and should be affordable - using items right from your kitchen. We will finish the evening by mixing a face mask you can use right when you get home! Instructor: Michelle McGlade

TIS TRIPS & TOURS Buffalo Bound

We will arrive in Buffalo, Minnesota. Settled in the mid-1800’s it was named for a buffalo fish found in beautiful Buffalo Lake. Now you will see artistic bison statues placed around town for perfect photo opportunities to remember your day in Buffalo. Our first stop will be at the Wright County Heritage Center and have some coffee and scones with Sally, the local historian. Her lively stories will make the past events of Buffalo and Wright County come alive as you walk through the museum. Next, we will arrive in downtown Buffalo. Shoppers will discover an eclectic mix of occasional stores from shabby chic to antiques, from artistic galleries to trendy fashion and accessories. Many stores are only open the first weekend of each month, so items are unique, limited and often one-ofa-kind collectibles. Each shopper will receive a coupon book and a map. We will enjoy lunch at the Wild Marsh Golf Course. Menu: Kobe Meatloaf. After lunch, we will arrive at Deer Lake Orchard. You may want to take a leisurely wagon ride through the maple forest and absorb the beauty of the fall colors in the rolling hills. Check out the pumpkin patch and the corn maze. TIS TRIPS & TOURS Old Log Theater: “Life Could Be A Dream”

We will arrive at the Old Log Theater, located in Excelsior near Lake Minnetonka. After lunch, we will enjoy the Theater performance “Life Could Be A Dream” - The Award-Winning ’60s Doo-Wop Musical Created by Roger Bean. Take a trip to Springfield and meet Denny and the Dreamers, a fledgling doo-wop singing group preparing to enter the Big Whopper Radio contest to realize their dreams of making it to the big time! Trouble comes in the form of Lois, who arrives to put some polish on the boys. Denny falls in love, Wally falls in line; Eugene falls apart and along comes handsome heartthrob Skip to send the whole situation spinning. The ’60s hits say it all: “Fools Fall in Love,” “Runaround Sue,” “Earth Angel,” “Unchained Melody." See it now before it heads to Broadway in 2016. "The Nutcracker's Nutz"

We will arrive at the Bloomington Eagles Club for lunch and a matinee performance. We will have lunch in the Ballroom, served buffet style. After lunch, we will enjoy “The Nutcracker's Nutz!" The play opens at a meeting of the Residents' Council of Simon's Rest, a retirement community in Frankfort, Michigan. For years the committee has relied on an annual performance of A Christmas Carol as a holiday fundraiser, but the guy who plays Scrooge can't remember his lines anymore. After the loss of their director, the program committee decides to look for another script. Not realizing it's a ballet, they plan a production of the Nutcracker. Before they know it the show is sold out, and they're committed to producing some form of the Nutcracker - complete with ballet! Think of it as a Charlie Brown Christmas for 70 year olds. Thursday, December 11 Depart IGH at 11:30 a.m. / Return at 3:45 p.m. Depart SSP at 11:15 a.m. / Return at 4 p.m. Depart TPAC at 11 a.m. / Return at 4:15 p.m. $64 includes transportation/lunch/show Register at your center by October 29

Wednesday, October 1, 2015; 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. Led by Toni Schutta, M.A., L.P. Parent Coach Research tells us that nearly 50% of college students suffer from mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, binge drinking and eating disorders. Those astounding numbers tell us that we need to be parenting differently now. You can raise a child who’s loving, kind, responsible, strong, confident and successful as a young adult. Parenting strategies that you’re using today, in the moment, will have far-reaching results for your child’s success. Come to this class to learn three key strategies for raising great kids along with practical tips that you can easily implement so you’re parenting with a plan for your child’s future success.

Trends in our Schools Wednesday, November 5, 2014; 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. Led by School Patrol Officer from Inver Grove Heights School and Area Schools We drop them off at the front doors and trust they are safe, making good choices and will share about their daily experiences, but do they? Join us in a session to learn trends in our area middle and high schools. We will also learn ways that parents can help partner with the schools on keeping our kids safe.

“I don’t want to talk about it” – Creative Approaches to Encourage Children to talk about Feelings Wednesday, January 7, 2015; 6:30-7:30 p.m. Led by Paula Achenback, Child and Family Therapist You know how to speak with your kid - you talk all the time about school homework, soccer games, and their favorite spaghetti dinner. But when your son or daughter comes home from school looking sad, or raging mad it becomes more difficult. Many times kids will shut down when you ask them, “What’s wrong?” They shrug their shoulders and mumble, “Nothing.” Fortunately brain science has given us some insight as to what is going on in the emotional brain and how to support emotional regulation. Additionally you will be given ideas for creative interventions that encourage connection and support emotional regulation.

Strengthening your Marriage: Date Night Isn’t the Only Answer Wednesday, February 4, 2015; 6:30-7:30 p.m. Led by Maureen Campion, Psychologist, founder and director of Parenting Oasis, a nonprofit parenting center Having a powerful, healthy relationship is one of the greatest gifts you can give your kids.
