Cuban Missile Crisis
lgrathen@tridistrictce.org
Coordinator Lisa Grathen
The Cuban missile crisis was a 13-day confrontation in October 1962 between the Soviet Union and Cuba on one side and the United States on the other side. The crisis is generally regarded as the moment in which the Cold War came closest to turning into a nuclear conflict. Get an in-depth look at the players and calculated moves made as the drama unfolded. This seminar is presented by Dan Hartman, who spent his career as a college professor in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Wednesday, Jan. 25 1 pm #1359-W17 $10.00 Register by Wednesday, Jan. 18.

Struggle with a Debilitating Disorder I Never Had" Jean Abbott will share her story of going from wheels to heels! As a young child, she was misdiagnosed with a form of Cerebral Palsy. Thirty-three years later she was correctly diagnosed. Now she enjoys all the adventures of her new life, but wouldn't change the journey that brought her to where she is today. Recently featured on the Today Show, you will find her story encouraging and inspirational. Ms. Abbott will sell and sign her book following the presentation. Great Decisions
The topic for January 9, 2017 will be : "The Future of Europe" The outcome of the United Kingdom referendum on EU membership sent shockwaves across the globe. It even caught British voters by surprise. The European Union has helped secure peace in Europe for the past 70 years. Now it faces an uncertain future. Amid a refugee crisis, lingering financial recession and the constant specter of terrorism, unity seems more imperative than ever. But the Brexit vote underscores the complexities of integrating an extremely diverse continent. What will post-Brexit Europe look like, and how can U.S. foreign policy adapt?

A costumed gangster tour guide will begin our tour through the streets of St. Paul during its roaring hoodlum heyday on an exploration of crooks, crime and corruption. See sites where the infamous lived, socialized, committed crimes and where many were brought to justice. Drive past the Landmark Center where some of the FBI's most notorious criminals were tried, including Ma Barker and her five sons. We will stop for lunch at the Tavern on Grand; please choose your meal when registering: Fried Walleye Basket or Grilled Chicken Breast Basket. Both meals include fries, coleslaw and beverage. We will end our trip with a "drive-by" through the St. Paul Winter Carnival sites.

TAKE A TRIP OF A LIFETIME
The Church Basement Ladies in "Rise Up, O Men" at Plymouth Playhouse
Join Thompson Park Activity Center and Landmark Tours in an inclusive air/motorcoach vacation. Specializing in North America trips. “Landmark Tour Trips are so inclusive that there’s nothing for you to do but ENJOY! My husband and I have taken twelve Landmark Tours and we are already talking about our 2017 plans." ~ Kathy Haak
“Rise Up, O Men” is a brand new show featuring the men of the church and your favorite church basement ladies who serve them. As these hard-working farmers discuss their scrap lumber piles and the benefits of solder versus weld, they unintentionally disrupt the order of the kitchen. But that’s what happens when you let roosters in the hen house.
“Ring of Kerry” at the Saint Cloud Paramount Theatre First stop will be our lunch at Coyote Moon Grille Restaurant, overlooking the Territory Golf Club, in St. Cloud. Menu: Lunch buffet with a couple of entrees, side dishes, salads, beverage and dessert. Then on to the Paramount Theatre, a turn-of-the-century historic 700 seat theatre that was renovated in 1998, for the performance of “Ring of Kerry”. The phenomenal, exciting St. Paul Irish dancers, Ring of Kerry, are bursting with energy and music that captures the heart of listeners. Five engaging musicians sing and play several instruments. Sounds range from the thunder of the Irish bodhran drum to the sparkle of the hammered dulcimer; from the lilt and rhythm of fiddle and guitar, to the haunting wails of flutes and pennywhistles. The band has developed a blend that is animated, ruggedly beautiful and fun. Friday, March 17 #1894 $74 includes transportation/lunch/play Depart TPAC 9:30 am / Return 5 pm Register by Thursday, Feb. 2.

“The Savannah Sipping Society” at Old Log Theatre
This quick witted, laugh a minute comedy will have you grinning the same way “Million Dollar Quartet” had you tapping! “The Savannah Sipping Society” is a new play of four unique single Southern women, all needing to escape the sameness of their day-to-day routines. They are drawn together by fate and an impromptu happy hour and decide it’s high time to reclaim the enthusiasm for life they’ve lost through the years. Over the course of six months, filled with laughter, hilarious misadventures, and the occasional liquid refreshment, these middle-aged women successfully bond and find the confidence to jumpstart their new lives. Together they discover lasting friendships and a renewed determination to live in the moment and, most importantly, to realize it’s never too late to make new old friends. Please state your luncheon choice at time of registration: 1) Beef short ribs, 2) Tilapia, 3) Vegetarian pasta or 4) Boneless chicken breast. UFF DAH! A Scandinavian History Tour
“Grease” at Chanhassen Theatre
After a decade, "Grease", the #1 best-seller in Chanhassen Dinner Theatre's history, returns to the Main Stage! Fancy a nostalgic evening full of greased-up hair, jukebox jingles and bobbysocks. The most popular, fun-filled musical in the history of Rock ’n’ Roll is packed with explosive energy, vibrant 1950s pop culture and unforgettable tunes: “Summer Nights,” “Look at Me, I’m Sandra Dee,” “We Go Together,” “Greased Lightnin’,” “Beauty School Dropout,” AND added songs made popular in the beloved film: “Grease (Is The Word),” “Hopelessly Devoted to You” and “You’re the One That I Want.” Join Sandy, Danny, those groovy T-Birds, sassy Pink Ladies and the whole gang at Rydell High for an affectionate satire of high school life in the '50s. It’s a high-octane Rock ‘n’ Roll party that entertains from start to finish. (Content Statement: The stage production of “Grease” contains mature situations and language.) For lunch, guests can select from a limited menu. Wednesday, May 24 #1896 $79.00 includes transportation/lunch/show Depart TPAC 10 am/Return 5:15 pm Register by Tuesday, April 18. First we will meet Ole & Lena. They are costumed character guides from Minnesota’s Scandinavian Past. Next we set out on a riding tour to discover how and why immigrants from Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland came as pioneers to St. Paul and Minneapolis. Learn about sites such as the Mindekirken Church and the Norway House. See the famous statue of Leif Erickson and other sights as you learn about the Twin Cities Scandinavian Heritage. We will then drop off Ole & Lena and have lunch at the American Swedish Institute. Menu: Smörgåsbord: Traditional Swedish dishes including meatballs, gravlax, potatoes, rye bread with butter, beet salad, cucumber salad, dessert and beverage. After lunch, we will spend time in the Bokhandel Gift Shop, followed by a guided tour of The Turnblad Mansion and the American Swedish Institute. Step back in time and experience the exquisite 33-room mansion, including detailed wood carvings and sculpted ceilings. Acquire knowledge about the fascinating Turnblad family and the history of early Minneapolis.
