Vision
Northern Dakota County TriDistrict Community Education (TCE) is a collaboration among three school districts located in the northern part of Dakota County: Inver Grove Heights, South St. Paul and West St. Paul-Mendota Heights-Eagan. TCE supports lifelong learning at every level, with programs for infants through older adults.
TriDistrict Community Education provides inspiration and opportunities for Lifelong Learning, Leadership Development, and Citizen Engagement through local, integrated and culturally responsive approaches to solving community issues and building community good will.

Greetings!
I am Laurie Anderson, the new Early Learning Programs Coordinator for ISD 197. I have worked with families professionally for over 30 years and I am energized by serving in this district. I received my Masters in Family Education from Hamline University. I am a licensed Family Life Educator and have coordinated family research projects for the University of Minnesota for nearly 10 years. I have worked as a consultant with school districts, with teachers on parent involvement and effective teacher-parent relationships, and have provided training for Early Learning staff and child care providers. I have spoken to numerous groups of parent employees and staff in various business organizations. I possess a long history of curriculum development and have published in Family Information Services and local periodicals throughout the Twin Cities area.
I am very excited to have joined an amazing group of educators whose passion is investing in the well being of children and their parents. I look forward to serving families in our new Early Learning site slated for next year, and am honored to be a part of a school district that values Early Learning.

Early Childhood Family Education
The West St. Paul-Mendota Heights-Eagan Area Schools Early Learning Program provides a variety of learning opportunities for children from birth to pre-kindergarten and their parents.
ECFE offers a variety of activities for families with young children, birth to five years. All classes are held at Kid Connections and the IGH Early Learning Center unless otherwise noted. Fees for classes are based on a sliding fee scale and may be waived. All families are welcome! Registration is required for all ECFE classes; call 651-457-9418.
Community Preschool
Both South St. Paul and Inver Grove Heights public schools offer a variety of preschool options for children age three by September 1st, up to kindergarten enrollment. Preschool curriculum is aligned with the kindergarten curriculum to promote the growth and development of readiness skills. Active and playful activities promote learning of literacy, math, problem solving, thinking, self-help and social interaction skills during these important early years.

The State of Minnesota requires that all children be screened before entering kindergarten. During screening, a nurse checks a child’s vision, hearing, growth, speech, development and immunizations. This free School District service is for children who are between the ages of 3-5 and is recommended to be completed at age 3½.

Early Childhood Screening
Screenings are a state requirement and done at three and a half years old to help ensure readiness for school success. Appointments are scheduled during the school year for South St. Paul and Inver Grove Heights residents. Screenings are free of charge, done on an individual basis and take about one hour. Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) is based on the idea that the family provides a child’s first and most important learning environment and that parents are a child’s most significant teachers. The mission of ECFE is to strengthen families and support parents in providing the best possible environment for the healthy growth and development of their children. A typical ECFE class consists of three learning sections: parent and child interaction time, early childhood education and parent discussion. All teachers in the program are licensed. Second-semester registration will begin on Jan. 5 and classes will begin on Jan. 26. GRASP is a nine-week correspondence program which helps students maintain reading and math skills while they are on summer vacation. It should take you and your child approximately one hour per week for nine weeks to complete each weekly lesson. We suggest parents order the grade level just completed. NXT Robotic Engineering
(Grades 6-8) Using the NXT Intelligent brick from LEGO®, servo motors, advanced ultrasonic, touch and light sensors, and specialized Lego technic engineering components, students will build robots, program them to accomplish tasks, respond to external stimuli, and overcome challenges. (Grades 6-8) Students working in teams will explore the exciting world of digital animation and photography. Our cinematographers and photographers will create their stories & unique projects using our special computer graphic and editing software. CheerAmerica is an exciting cheerleading and dance program. Our Driver Education program is taught by certified licensed instructors. The state of Minnesota requires anyone under the age of 18 wanting to obtain a MN Driver's License to complete an approved course in driver education. This course must include a minimum of 30 hours of classroom instruction and six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction. The classroom includes lecture, class discussion, guest speakers, films, written work from textbooks and written tests. Behind-the-wheel training allows a student to practice driving on public streets and highways with an instructor in a dual-control (two brake) car. The fee is $360. Payment can be made in full at the time of registration or pay $180 at the beginning of class and $180 at the end of the 30 hours prior to the student receiving the 'blue' card.

It encourages each child’s success by developing strokes and swimming endurance, one step at a time. This class is designed for younger preschooler’s ages 2-3 years who are ready to be in the water without a parent. Students will learn basic aquatic skills such as submerging mouth, nose, and eyes in the water, bobbing and kicking as well as to enter and exit the water safely. Parents are not required to be in the water with their child. Water diapers are required for toddlers.
Preschool Swimmers 2
This class is designed for older preschooler’s ages 4-5 years who are ready to be in the water without a parent. Students will learn basic aquatic skills such as fully submerging and holding breath, front and back floats, treading water and water safety. Parents are not required to be in the water with their child.
Level 1 - Introduction to Water Skills
This class will help students feel comfortable in the water and build a foundation of basic water skills that they will build upon as they go through the “Learn to Swim” program. Students will learn to enter and exit the water safely, bobbing, retrieving submerged objects, front and back glide, back float and arm and leg actions. Children must be at least 5 years of age.
Level 2 - Fundamental Aquatic Skills
Students will improve their skills from level 1 and learn new skills such as jumping into the water, rotary breathing, rolling from front to back, treading water and combined arm and leg action on front and back.
Level 3 - Stroke Development
This class will primarily focus on stroke development in front and back crawl and will be introduced to the elementary back stroke. Skills are taught in both shallow and deep water and students will swim independently over short distances.
Level 4 - Stroke Improvement
Students will continue to practice strokes from Level 3 and be introduced to the breaststroke and sidestroke. They will work to build endurance in both shallow and deep water swimming independently under water over medium distances. They will also learn headfirst entries from the side of the pool.
If your child has a disability of some sort, please let us know. This helps ensure that we provide adequate pool staff for the program. Students must furnish their own towel and suit. Goggles optional. Please leave valuables at home. Neither the aquatics staff nor Community Education will be responsible for lost or stolen items. Spectators must be seated. For the safety of all, children not enrolled in the class must remain with a parent. Please be on time! Every minute of our swim lessons is important. Educación Familiar de la Niñez Temprana (EFNT) es un programa para padres
y sus hijos recién nacidos a pre kínder que ofrece oportunidades para crecer y aprender juntos en un ambiente estimulante y lleno de apoyo. Estos programas también apoyan a familias a aprender a encontrar tiempo para sí mismos, divertirse juntos, y estar orgulloso de quiénes son. La clase de “Building Bridges” se lleva a cabo los miércoles en la tarde en la escuela Moreland de 5:00-6:30. Hay transporte para la escuela y cuidado infantil para niños. Deben tener un hijo dentro de la edad de recién nacido a 5 años (antes de entrar a kínder) para inscribirse para esta clase. Adults with disabilities are encouraged to participate in the general classes offered in this catalog; however, the activities on this page have been customized for adults with developmental disabilities.
Bingo Night! Access Project Information Participants who require oneon-one attention for physical and/or behavior issues or medication administration must be supervised by a caregiver. If a behavioral incident occurs, a caregiver may be required to accompany the participant to all future activities. Classes will be held on the date and at the time and location listed unless you are otherwise notified. Transportation to and from activities is the responsibility of the participant or caregiver, unless otherwise noted. Participants must be accompanied to the classroom and should check in no earlier than 15 minutes prior to the listed start time and should be picked up promptly at the end time listed. Bridge Lessons Deck 4
This class will focus on the bidding exchanges following an opening bid of 1 no trump. Audrey Grant’s Bridge Basics 3, Chapters 1 and 2, will be used as the basis for developing the bidding tools used daily by North American bridge players, such as transfer bids, and the Stayman convention. After the topic of the day is introduced, prepared hands will be bid and played, to illustrate not only how to make the contract that has been reached, but how the opponents may cooperate to defeat that same contract. It's time to pick up a new hand and learn a game you can play anywhere! This class is for beginners who are new to the game of Bridge. We will be using the Audrey Grant Bridge Basics instruction method which uses coded cards and pre-dealt hands to give you the most hands-on experience. Each participant will get a folder to hold the handouts for each week's lesson. Audrey Grant’s Bridge Basics will be available at cost from the instructor. This class will focus on the bidding and play of contracts with a trump suit, after which Audrey Grant’s Bridge Basics 3, Chapters 3 and 4 will be introduced. Minor suit and major suit openings will be reviewed, with appropriate responses, followed by the Strong 2 Club Opener, and Blackwood and other Ace-asking bids. These are essential tools for bidding strong hands, which any bridge player should be familiar with. Prepared hands will be used to illustrate each lesson, with emphasis not only on how to make the contract that was bid, but lessons on defense to show how such contracts may be defeated or held to the lowest available number of tricks. Scotch Tasting 101 at the LeDuc Mansion

Mosaic Sampler: Table or Wall Mirror
It's time to spruce up the bare wall space or the empty spot in any room. With the easy mosaic glass art technique and your creativity you can make a colorful mosaic table or the mirror frame that will look amazing in any home. The tedious glass cutting is done and ready to go. Bring your design ideas or use some of the easy-to-do patterns supplied by the instructor. The process is fun and simple! The 2nd night is messy with grouting; please dress accordingly, bring some old terry towels and a small jar with lid. If you did not finish the glass work the 1st night you will have homework before grouting. After the grouting has done its magic and your table or mirror is finished, we will go over cutting, resources and more project ideas. The table is about 16” square and the material fee is $29. INCOME TAX PREPARATION ASSISTANCE
This driver improvement course is taught by Minnesota Highway Safety and Research Center trained instructors. The class will explore changes in laws, the latest vehicle technology, and provide you with easy to use defensive driving tips. In addition, we will explore traffic safety and accident prevention. Course completion allows for a 10% reduction on automobile insurance premiums for those age 55 and over. An eight hour course is initially required, followed by a four hour refresher class every three years. All driver improvement courses must be refreshed every three years to keep the discount in force. No written or behind-the-wheel tests will be given. Please bring your driver’s license and a pen to class.
Volunteer income tax prepares will be doing tax returns free of charge. These tax counselors are trained to assist with BASIC tax forms and problems, therefore, Tax Assistance will be provided to seniors who are 55 years or older and who are low income. Tax service will be provided only for uncomplicated income and property taxes (including rent rebates). Tax assistance guidelines are as follows:

We will arrive at the Target Field Station by motorcoach. It is about a block walk to the multimodal transportation hub. We will board the green line light rail that travels between downtown Minneapolis and the Union Depot in St. Paul. We will arrive at the elegant Union Depot Place with the beautifully preserved, neo-classical grandeur of the historic train station. Next, we will have a tour to explore the history of the Union Depot. Experience the beauty and majesty of the historic renovation and be inspired. See the artwork and learn about the building’s use over time. Crews restored the structure to its original splendor, and make a commitment to sustainability and green building practices. It led to Union Depot’s certification for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. You will be walking and standing for approximately one hour. After the tour, we will enjoy a fabulous luncheon buffet at Christos Greek Restaurant located in the Union Depot. After lunch, we will depart for home.

Grotto of the Redemption
Our first stop is for coffee & rolls in Albert Lea. Next stop is West Bend, Iowa at the Grotto of the Redemption, to witness “A Miracle in Stone.” We will have a guided tour of the grounds. Grotto of the Redemption is a composite of nine separate Grottos, each portraying a scene in the life of Christ. The Grotto includes the largest collection of precious stones and gems found anywhere in one location. The artistry has to be seen to be appreciated, plus the message it gives is beyond words. It is frequently considered as the "Eighth Wonder of the World." It is often described as "A Miracle in Stone." The magnificent structure of the Grotto covers more than one city block and includes handcarved Italian marble statues, petrified wood, quartz crystals and semi-precious stones from around the world. Since the construction began in 1912, the Grotto has drawn thousands of visitors each year who come to experience the unique beauty and peace of this spectacular treasure. The guide will also talk about the church, Saint Peter and Paul's Church. After the guided tour, guests can take time for a selfguided tour through the museum. We will have lunch in the Grotto Cafeteria. Menu: Marinated Chicken Breast. Observation of a Town Square Television truck production is optional. Note: The production truck is available for community-based event productions, and is generally not available for series programming. Use of the production truck is at the discretion of Town Square Television’s Executive Director. Unless otherwise noted, Adult Programs are open to everyone age 15 and older.
Cancellation
If there is insufficient enrollment for a program, you will be notified by phone or e-mail and you will receive a full refund. Please include a phone number on your registration form where you can be contacted during the day. Community Education assumes no responsibility for reaching registrants who do not provide a daytime phone number. Classes may be cancelled due to inclement weather or for other unavoidable reasons. These sessions are made up whenever possible. Cancellations due to severe weather are announced on WCCO Radio (830 on the AM dial), Channel 4 (WCCO), Channel 5 (KSTP) and Channel 11 (KARE). You will not be called by Community Education.
Refunds
Requests for a refund by individuals who need to cancel must be received by our office seven days prior to the first class session. An $8 service charge may be added if you must cancel a class. No refunds are issued after the first class session.

Tobacco-Free Environment
Community Education supports the growing national movement toward a tobacco-free environment. Use of tobacco products in school buildings and on district grounds is prohibited.

Registration begins when you receive your catalog and remains open until each class is filled or cancelled. Registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. We encourage you to register early! Please note: You will only hear from us in the event of a class change, class cancellation or if the class is full. If you do not hear from us, you are in.

The MN deduction allows parents to subtract from their taxable income up to $2,500 for qualifying expenses on behalf of each child in grades seven to 12 and up to $1,625 for each child in grades kindergarten to six. The list of qualifying expenses to include all Community Education classes, tutoring, academic summer school and camps and up to $200 of the cost of a computer or education-related software.
4 Ways to Register Online
UCare members may be eligible for a $15 discount on most classes in this catalog. If a class is less than $15, the member may take the class free of charge. UCare for Senior members are limited to one $15 discount per year. Members must be on UCare at the time of registration and through the duration of the class(es). Members need to include their UCare ID number when registering and must register by phone or mail. For more information, call 612-676-3351.
Photographs, videos and other documentation taken at school or Community Education activities may be submitted to newspapers, used on district Web sites, Social Media sites or appear in publications. Written requests not to publish photos of specific students will be honored.
