Brain Builders EUREKA! The Inventor’s Camp

(Grades 1-6) Are you a budding inventor? If so, join Mad Science as we learn about famous inventors and the contributions they made to science, such as Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Edison, Rube Goldberg, Archimedes and Ben Franklin. Use your knowledge and creativity to overcome a series of challenges using basic materials, simple machines, tips from famous inventors and most importantly, your mind. Kid’s favorite movie making class is back in “force”! With over twenty new characters for you to choose from, it’s up to your small team to produce a stop frame movie, including developing the characters and set. Then it’s lights, camera, action! Minecraft with an electrical engineering twist! In this class you’ll learn to customize the Minecraft world with resource packs created by YOU, program teleporters and challenge your problem solving skills as you design a playable map. We’ll also explore the wonderful world of electricity as you create electrical circuits and more in the safety of the Minecraft world. Curious minds and basic Minecraft knowledge required. All aboard! Summer and water goes together and what better way to have a blast than building LEGO boats that actually float?! Techno Tinkering

(Grades 2-6) Are you ready for a challenge? Do you find yourself tinkering with batteries, motors and moving objects? Then put your building skills to the test as a techno engineer by designing and constructing remotecontrolled vehicles to learn about motors, gears and robotics. Then test your creations against fun and challenging obstacle course. The final project will be building a vibro-bot to take home with you.

Intro to Java Coding

(Grades 4-6) Students working on individual computers will be introduced to object-orientated programming, console applications, graphics applications and elements of the Java language. We will work through several projects for students to build and try. No programming experience is necessary, but familiarity with doing common tasks using a computer operating system (simple editing, file maintenance and understanding directory structures) is required. Java is texted based programming and students should be comfortable with keyboarding. Please bring a snack and beverage daily. (Grades 1-4) On your mark, get set, go! Youth will be engaged in designing, building, testing and modifying an air-powered car made out of LEGOS. Participants will race to the finish line! How can you make a rocket fly farther? Does the weight of the rocket, material, or size affect how far it goes? Youth will make and launch their rockets to find the best design imaginable! (Grades 1-4 WSP) (Grades 2-6 SSP) Minecraft is a sandbox building game, that’s been dominating the world of video gaming for the past few years. In our course, explore, learn, problem solve and create amazing and unique worlds together using Minecraft for the PC. This class is for Beginner and Intermediate Minecrafters. Students will be playing in a custom created world, on a special MinecraftEDU modded server. We will be learning minecrafting basics, following a progressive story of survival on a desert island and then learn to work collaboratively to survive. Work towards a common goal of solving the mystery of the island and conquering the tyrant in charge. At the end of class students will be given complete creative freedom to develop our island. (Grades 2-6) Do you dream of traveling to the stars or moon some day? Then this summer adventure is perfect for you. We’ll build rockets based on different propulsion systems and shoot them up into the air. We’ll even launch a rocket with a parachute to learn about rocket recovery and repair. Secret Agent

(Grades 2-6) Can you outwit the Mad Science Spy? James Bond’s gadgets weren’t all science fiction. Discover the science behind some real spy technology as you listen to distant voices and sounds. Learn about different secret codes, use in clandestine communications and a little of the history behind them. Experiment passing your messages using a spy technique called a “dead drop.” Build an alarm system, a secret safe and attempt to defeat several security systems. Imagine & Design Frozen Art Camp

(Grades K-3) Come experience the magic of winter in a whole new way! This highly anticipated camp inspired by the Disney movie Frozen will entertain and delight your child. They will love creating snow globes, clay sculptures, sparkly castle scenes and more, all featuring their favorite characters from the movie. Performing Arts South St. Paul Community Theater

The South St.Paul Community Theater and Tri-District Community Education are proud to present the Summer 2015 Theater Season . The SSP Community Theater will be performing Hercules on July 16 and 17 at 7 p.m. and The 39 Steps on July 24 and 25 at 7 p.m. and July 26 at 2 p.m. All performances will be at the Kaposia Education Center.

Hercules

(Grades 4-9) Hercules' girlfriend, Megara, has been poisoned by a jealous Hera and now he must complete eight tasks for Hera or lose Megara's love forever. The problem is, Hercules is a bit of a wimp and it doesn't look as if he will be performing any great feats of strength much less act particularly clever. Yet, he humbles the cocky Stymphalian birds, gets the best of the shady Arcadian stag, resists the Erymanthian Bore, cleans up King Augeus' act and gives each of the Hydra's heads a new hairdo. Hercules is reunited with Megara since no force can resist true love for very long." Auditions will be held on Tuesday, June 2 and Wednesday, June 3 at the Kaposia Education Center Performance Area from 2-5 p.m. First rehearsal (and call backs if needed) will be on Thursday, June 4 from 2-5 p.m. Rehearsals for Hercules will generally run from 2-5 p.m. starting June 4 and running through July 15. 2015 Warrior Girls Basketball Camp

(Grades 3-8) The focus of the camp will be on age appropriate skill development including shooting, ball handling, passing, defense, and much more. The emphasis will be on teaching the fundamentals of the game, developing and improving individual skills, and encouraging a team mentality.

Beyond the Dog Camp (Grades K-4)

Each session will focus on one type of care for dogs. Children will get hands on experience working with dogs and practicing appropriate ways of handling them. They will also meet real working professionals and gain an understanding of what they do. Topics will include basic pet care, veterinary care, behavior and body language, staying safe and how you can help, training, dog sports and giving your dog a job. Aquatics Tiny Tots

This is a parent/child class for children 6 months to 2 years of age. An adult must accompany each child in the water. Parents and children learn together to increase a child's comfort level in the water and build a foundation of basic skills, such as arm and leg movements and breath control as well as water safety. Water diapers are required for infants and toddlers.

This class is designed for younger preschooler’s ages 2-3 years who are ready to be in the water without a parent. Students will learn basic aquatic skills such as submerging mouth, nose, and eyes in the water, bobbing and kicking as well as to enter and exit the water safely. This class is designed for older preschooler’s ages 4-5 years who are ready to be in the water without a parent. Students will learn basic aquatic skills such as fully submerging and holding breath, front and back floats, treading water and water safety. Parents are not required to be in the water with their child.

Level 1 - Introduction to Water Skills

This class will help students feel comfortable in the water and build a foundation of basic water skills that they will build upon as they go through the “Learn to Swim” program. Students will learn to enter and exit the water safely, bobbing, retrieving submerged objects, front and back glide, back float and arm and leg actions. Children must be at least 5 years of age.

Level 2 - Fundamental Aquatic Skills

Students will improve their skills from level 1 and learn new skills such as jumping into the water, rotary breathing, rolling from front to back, treading water and combined arm and leg action on front and back.

Level 3 - Stroke Development

This class will primarily focus on stroke development in front and back crawl and will be introduced to the elementary back stroke. Skills are taught in both shallow and deep water and students will swim independently over short distances.

Level 4 - Stroke Improvement

Students will continue to practice strokes from Level 3 and be introduced to the breaststroke and sidestroke. They will work to build endurance in both shallow and deep water swimming independently under water over medium distances. They will also learn headfirst entries from the side of the pool.

Level 5 - Stroke Refinement and Proficiency

This class provides further coordination and refinement of strokes. Students will build endurance to swim greater distances and will learn flip turns and be introduced to the butterfly stroke.

It encourages each child’s success by developing strokes and swimming endurance, one step at a time. • Red Cross Swimming Instructors are American Red Cross certified in water safety instruction and/or lifeguarding. • Please read the lesson description thoroughly to determine the appropriate level for your child. If you have questions about your child’s level, please be sure to attend the first session. A member of the staff will review swimming skills and determine if children are placed in the correct class. Registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis and must be in at least three days prior to the start of the class. All classes need a minimum number of participants in order to take place.

Cancellation Policy

If a class is cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, you will be notified by phone or email and receive a full refund. If class is cancelled because of the weather or unavoidable reasons, it will be rescheduled when possible.

Requests for a refund must be received by our office five days prior to the first class session. There is a $10 service charge for all refunds requested by participants before the first session.
