Brain Builders Brain Camp (Grades 3-8)

Brain Power Camp is a cognitive enrichment program for kids grades 3-8, Brain Camp is filled with fun activities that work on brain skills, like memory, attention and logic-core skills the brain uses to learn and think. Extreme Robotics (Grades 5-9)

Super-Charged LEGO Robotics Projects! Get ready to take ultimate control! Using the NXT Intelligent brick from LEGOÂŽ, servo motors, advanced ultrasonic, touch and light sensors, and specialized Lego technic engineering components, students will build extreme robots, program them to accomplish tasks, respond to external stimuli, and overcome challenges. Students working in small teams will control the robot with NXT programs, and then have the opportunity to experiment and modify the programs. Students will then be challenged to morph their projects in better, stronger or faster robots. Possible competitive robots built are Tug-O-War bots, hammer-bot, a clawstriker, and Sumo-bot. Brain Builders Java Game Coding (Grades 6-9)

New Class! Students working on individual computers will be introduced to object-oriented programming, and elements of the Java language, while learning to code their own text based RPG (Role Playing Game). No programming experience is necessary, but familiarity with doing common tasks using a computer operating system (text editing and understanding directory structures) and keyboarding is required. Robotics: Star Wars Battle-Droids (Grades 5-9)

Build robotic machines and droids, inspired by designs made a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. Motorized sand crawlers, Drones, Battle-Droids galore and more. In this fun and exciting hands on class students working in pairs will be using the Lego Star Wars Robotic Mindstorms Droid Developer kit, to build and experiment with up to 6 different battle class droids. Learn about robotics and engineering as we build the base models, then customize your droid. Students experiment with robotic motors and advanced light sensors to bring their projects to life! Possible models include the Super Battle Droid, Destroyer Droid, AT-AT, and a Stepper Droid Challenge. Students will get to take a home a small Lego non-robotic droid. Java Minecraft Mod Development (Grades 5-9) Write and edit your own Minecraft mods. Watch your code come to life. Learn the basics of Java Coding with Minecraft! Students should be comfortable with keyboarding, and of course playing Minecraft! We will be coding using Java, Eclipse and the Forge API. We will test our mods with Minecraft game play. HEALTH & SAFETY Safekids 101-Preparing Kids to Stay Safe at Home or in the Community (Ages 8 and up)

Safekids 101 helps kids with the next step in independence and helps parents rest in the knowledge that this course will help their child stay safe at home and in the community. The class focuses on safety for children regardless if they are home alone or not. Topics Include: Responsibilities when staying home alone, how to decide whether to answer the door (even if a parent is home), simple first aid and identifying fire and tornado safety rules including getting to safety. Understanding safety in unfamiliar scenarios: around guns, online safety and near aggressive dogs. Knowing the truth about abuse, abduction and stranger danger. Cupcake Owl Tree

Monogram String Art

Students will arrange 12 cupcakes into the shape of a tree and decorate it using buttercream icing. They will then decorate the tree with leaves and owls that will be formed out of fondant and gumpaste. This will be a pull apart cake that they will take home. Instructor: Diana Hirte

String Art is a crafting classic-not to mention the latest and greatest craze! Participants will choose from several colors of paint to add color to the wood 10” x 10” background of their project. Nails will be pounded into place, and then several colors of string will be available to make your design come to life! Please indicate what letter you would like to make at time or registration. During this fashionable camp you will create several pieces of art you can wear! Create a colorful tie-dye t-shirt, paint a tote bag and customize a versatile bandana! CANS Anyone? (Grades 7-12)

Here is your chance to be part of a novelty percussion ensemble performing on items such as - Garbage Cans, Buckets, Brooms, Chairs, Wooden Poles, Boom Whackers, etc. This is a course designed for non-percussion band students or young percussion students. Students will learn basic skills, techniques, rhythms and sticking patterns that are part of percussion vocabulary. Emphasis will be placed on rhythmic timing, sticking, and visual choreography. Intermediate Jazz/Rock Band (Grades 7-9)

Jazz/rock band is a specialized class concentrating on the development of the student in the area of contemporary music. This course is open to all band students. A variety of repertoire and styles will be explored in addition to relevant theoretical and historical concepts. There is an emphasis on individual skills such as improvisation and alternate instrumental techniques utilized in jazz/rock/pop music. *Recommended for students who have played an instrument for 1-3 years. Stink Band (Grades 7-12)

This course is designed for students who already play an instrument and would like to learn a SECONDARY wind instrument. Students would need to provide their secondary instrument (purchase reeds, if applicable) and Essential Elements Book 1. The exception would be school band instruments- Tuba, Baritone and French Horn. It is recommended that the students choice of secondary instrument be in the same family of their current instrument i.e., woodwind or brass. That will allow the class to move at a faster pace. Youth Leadership Program- Toastmasters International in Partnership CHS Riverbluffers (Grades 6-9)

The Youth Leadership Program sponsored by CHS Riverbluffers Toastmasters club is a workshop consisting of seven onehour sessions that enable participants to develop communication and leadership skills through practical experience. Participants learn to: - Evaluate present speaking ability - Organize and give speeches - Give impromptu talks - Control voice, vocabulary and gestures - Give constructive feedback and more Students must register by June 9. Meetings generally follow a format similar to that of a Toastmasters club meeting, including an agenda, parliamentary procedure, an emcee, impromptu speaking and prepared speeches, and the selection of presiding officers. The Youth Leadership Program group is limited to 12 people. Vertical Endeavor Rock Climbing Camp Vertical Endeavors St. Paul ½ Day Rock Climbing Camps offer children ages 6 to 16 the opportunity to explore the sport of rock climbing in a controlled setting that is fun and exciting for kids of all skill levels. No experience is necessary. In addition to our focus on fun, all of our camps place a strong emphasis on risk management in the sport of rock climbing. The week will culminate with a pizza party and zip line. Your child will leave camp with a deeper understanding of rock climbing. Base Camp (ages 6-9) will introduce kids to the sport of climbing by teaching climbing basics. We will cover risk management, knot tying, and an introduction to climbing routes. The campers will improve their climbing skill and confidence through a variety of activities and games. Peak Experience (ages 10-12) will explore more climbing techniques, including knot tying, belaying, ascending, and rappelling. The campers will learn to belay one another on the first day, which will allow them to more independently pursue individual climbing projects. They will leave with an increased confidence and a greater appreciation for the sport of rock climbing. High Summit Adventure (ages 13-16) will learn fundamentals of advanced climbing, including, technique and movement, rope management skills, and technical knowledge. The campers will also gain exposure to lead climbing and belaying. They will expand their knowledge base regarding skills that could eventually be used in an outdoor setting. Summer Fun Golf Camp for Beginners and Intermediates (Grades 1-8) (All lessons are at Emerald Green Golf Course)

Develop friendships,confidence and sportsmanship while learning a great lifelong sport! One Week Golf Camp for beginner and intermediate golfers. Class includes 1.75 hour lesson per day, use of all equipment, a bag tag and a golf t-shirt. Four daily lessons running Monday through Thursday of the same week. Cheer America is an exciting cheerleading and dance program. Students learn popular cheers, chants, jumps, leaps, choreographed pom pom/dance routines, parade marching techniques and other skills involved in performances, competitions and school cheerleading team tryouts. SOUTH ST. PAUL YOUTH CENTER

(For students entering grades 6-8) Packer Pad is an awesome place to hang out with your friends! We will spend time going to the pool, playing games, doing crafts, listening to music, going on field trips-who could ask for anything better! You have the freedom to come when you choose-spend the whole day or just part of the day, it’s up to you! (STAR) Packer Pad received a grant from the South St Paul Educational Foundation to partner with Urban Boat Builders to construct a two person Urban Traveller Canoe and paddles. Youth will be working on this project daily and will launch the canoe in August. The canoe will be raffled off at the SSP Educational Foundation Gala in late August.

STORM

Independent School District 197 (For students entering grades 5-8) Join us this summer for our middle school program at the Noreen Activity Center (NAC). Youth will enjoy age appropriate programming they will have a hand in creating, with access to a full gym, lounge, game room, kitchen, and community park. Youth will participate in Volunteer Days at Dodge Nature Center, the Westwood Ridge Nursing Home, and the Mississippi Valley Montessori School. Youth are encouraged to bring their bikes, or other set of wheels, to ride to the West St. Paul Pool each afternoon and lunch at Moreland. Join us for a variety of creative and enriching activities, from cooking to camping to swimming to biking. Breakfast, lunch and snack is provided!

Summer 2017 Program - Programa de Verano 2017

Kids’ Choice offers an all-day program during the summer that is open to children who are entering kindergarten through 7th grade. Children who attend another district during the school year are welcome to join the summer program. Join the summer Kids’ Choice program where youth participate in fun indoor/outdoor activities, go on weekly field trips and socialize with friends, all in a safe engaging atmosphere. Activities include theater, cooking, sports, service learning opportunities, walking field trips, special guests and youth enrichment classes. Breakfast and snack provided daily. Kids’ Choice ofrece un programa para todo el día durante el verano, que esta abierto para los niños que están entrando al kínder y hasta 7 grado. Los niños que atienden otro distrito escolar durante el año son bienvenidos a participar en este programa de verano. Únete al programa de verano de Kids’ Choice donde los niños participan en actividades divertidas adentro y al aire libre, excursiones semanales y socialización con amigos, todo en una atmsfera segura y atractiva. Registration Information Registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis and must be in at least three days prior to the start of the class. All classes need a minimum number of participants in order to take place.

Cancellation Policy

If a class is cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, you will be notified by phone or email and receive a full refund. If class is cancelled because of the weather or unavoidable reasons, it will be rescheduled when possible.

Requests for a refund must be received by our office five days prior to the first class session. There is an $10 service charge for all refunds requested by participants before the first session.

Photographs taken at classes and activities may be submitted to newspapers, or District publications. Written requests not to publish photos of specific students will be honored.
