ife gave us lemons – so what did we do? We made our pre-req drink feature lemonade, of course!
The TRIM team certainly faced trials and tribulations this semester. Perhaps you could say this issue’s publishing cycle contained a lot of plot twists including a crashed hard drive, a hacked Wifi network, a double whammy of finals and thesis, and a grand finale of Katie’s laptop being stolen right before our planned release date. Ultimately, overcoming these hurdles only makes 1
TRIM SPRING / SUMMER 2015
If the last few months’ suspense hasn’t killed you yet, please treat yourself to the seventh edition of Rutgers’ favorite fashion and lifestyle publication. Despite our struggles, quality was never compromised as we continue to hold a high standard for our readers. With that, you will still find all your favorites such as the vibrant Life; Love & Lust; and Style sections. We’re sure you’ll be impressed when you find out how we’ve danced for dates, discovered the sexiest games around, and traveled back in time to the 1950’s as well as going forward again to a futuristic video game paradise. What else? Well, with the desire to always keep our audience close and connected, we thought it would be perfect to have Olena Mishchenko, a Rutgers student and flourishing YouTuber, as our model citizen this semester. So, hop on your laptops or SmartPhones and check out Olena’s YouTube channel, IAmJustaMakeupLover. And don’t just virtually befriend her - be sure to keep an eye out for her around campus too. Olena is always open to meeting her Internet friends and
answering any questions you may have for her in real life. Sadly, as this issue comes to a close, we also bid a fond farewell to some of our loyal staff members. We must say goodbye to our fabulous PR director Kaitlin Rogers, our dedicated business director Ankita Sankla, and last but certainly not least, one of us (Katie) must leave the Trim family as well. On the bright side, it is always exciting to see where our TRIM alumni end up. Lastly, thank you, our readers, for your undying love and support. Just like true fans, you were there for us through thick and thin and that is why we will be forever grateful and motivated to give you our best and only our best for as long as you need us. Cheers to another successful issue and many more to come! All the best, Emily Beckman and Katie Belloff

formation. After majoring in public relations and minoring in psychology, Cordero wanted to work in a PR position. But he found out the world he entered was not what everyone told him it would be. “What you learn in the classroom is very guided and written out,” Cordero said. “The real world doesn’t work like that — there are fires around every corner and you have to know how to think fast, and more importantly, how to think for yourself. College puts you in this ‘theory’ world where there’s a lot of who, what, where, answers but no how, which is what you really need to survive.” Cordero thought he would spend a few months apply-
ing for PR positions, then find the job of his dreams. After all, he was experienced, smart and determined. But in the real world, this is not always enough. “I found myself getting Starbucks for eight superiors and cleaning up after the company dog ‘Chili’ for a few months,” he said. “I had to intern for free when I had about four semesters of experience prior to.” Cordeo was surprised by his experiences, but he also realizes that you need to start somewhere to get to the top. He still finds that his undergraduate education is extremely valuable. He stresses to current undergraduates to be yourself and not feel married to your major. Do whatever feels right for you.
Still unsure about this whole “not knowing, follow your heart” deal? Well Rutgers isn’t here to leave you in the dark. Visit career knight online at https://careers.rutgers.edu/page.cfm?page_ID=276 and take the “self-assessment” provided by the university. It takes into consideration a lot of different things about your personality and interests to help find the right major for you. uring my first two years of college, I felt this nagging, constant pressure to figure out what to major in. I was bombarded with questions at every advisor meeting about what I wanted to do with my life, and at 18 or 19, I really didn’t know. However, the most comforting thought is that I’m not alone. Many college students struggle with figuring out their dream job. Post-grad life is a scary place, so it helps to know a few people who can share their own experiences with the outside world. utgers Equestrian Team Hunter Seat Captain Gwendolyn Campbell and President Amanda Immidisetti gave TRIM Magazine the inside scoop on life in the stables and serving on the team.
But I had been riding my whole life, and I had been planning on going to a school where the equestrian team is a heavier part of the athletics department. But I came here instead and just joined on a whim!
TRIM: How did you get involved with the equestrian team? Gwendolyn Campbell: In one of the first or second weeks of my freshman year, I saw a flyer at a bus stop. It said, “Come to our meeting at the campus center.” So I stopped in, and a lot of the other girls there wanted to join the team for sure. And I was just checking it out – I wasn’t planning on joining the equestrian team at Rutgers. By the end of the meeting, the team was like, “Alright, checks are due; hand in your schedule.” And I just signed a bunch of paperwork, feeling a bit flustered, then handed it in, and then I was like, “I guess I joined the equestrian team here at Rutgers.
TM: How often do you practice? GC: It’s mandatory that you practice once a week, but we also encourage people, if they have the time in their schedule and the money in their budget, to ride as much as they can. In Amanda’s situation, she has her own horse so she can practice more. TM: Is it expensive as a sport? GC: As a sport on the whole, it is extremely expensive. Our club team is still considered expensive for the average person’s budget, but compared to the cost of doing the sport outside of the college setting it is incredibly affordable. Using Amanda as an example: Coming in as a new rider, going
to competitions, getting coaching, was a lot cheaper than if Amanda had gone to a private facility. Amanda Immidisetti: The IHSA also tries to make things a little more affordable. For example, there are classes for $35. If you were to do this on your own, you would have to pay the trainer, trailering, and all these other fees that add up. TM: How many people are on the team? GC: About sixty. We’re the seventh largest club sport... As a competition team, we need beginners. Amanda was a rare case of being one of our beginners but also being really proactive about joining. Most of them get scared off by the budget and the fact that there are really experienced riders on our team already. Our team seems expensive until you go and try riding in the real world… and that’s when you cry. TRIM SPRING / SUMMER 2015

emonade has deep and refreshing roots. The first written record of lemonade comes from Medieval Egypt - and since then, this tangy warm-weather treat has been reinvented, reworked and remade a million times over. We here at TRIM have decided to hook you up with our favorite versions to quench your thirst. 1. Nantucket Nectars Lemonade (Price varies, available at most markets) Not for the faint of heart, this is one of the tartiest bottled lemonades on the market. But with a hint of sweetness to temper the sour, this is the best prepackaged stuff available. 9

2. Leinenkugel Summer Shandy (Price varies, around $10 for a 6-pack, at your neighborhood liquor store) Sure, we could have gone with Mike’s Hard Lemonade, but let’s be real-- it’s time for something new. This wheat beer is light on alcohol at 4.5% ABV and is mixed with citrus flavors and lemonade to create a lovely summery brew. 3. Perfect Lemonade Margarita Trying to get your fiesta on while still enjoying a summer classic? This margarita has got you covered. A tried and true blend of Cuervo 1800, Cointreau Orange Liqueur,
4. Blackberry Bourbon Lemonade This drink is a staple in Southern restaurants like Yardbird. With lemon, blackberries and mint, it’s a fruity and refreshing cocktail that’ll make you forget all about our long winter. The blackberry bourbon is best mixed with lemon juice, simple syrup, and mint for that perfect zesty taste! 3. Homemade Lemonade Because you can’t beat a classic. For an old-fashioned homemade recipe, just pour one and one half cups of lemon juice through a sieve and into a pitcher. Then, stir a full cup of sugar until it dissolves, and add two cups of water. Now you have fresh lemonade for any summer party!

craving a hoagie? we know where to get the best hoagies in new brunswick By Taylor Carvin

lthough tri-state area kids constantly argue over their name, there is nothing like a good hoagie for a late night study session. Luckily for us, Rutgers has many options around campus that can cater to all our hoagie needs. This past spring, I valiantly went across New Brunswick and sacrificed my waist line to find the best choices close by. One great option is Jersey Subs. Located on George Street, this family owned and operated lunchtime hub offers delicious and authentic deli sandwiches. I recommend the #1, a hoagie packed with Boar’s Head quality salami, ham, and provolone. I complete this masterpeiece with lettuce, tomato, onion, hot peppers, and extra oil and vinegar. Served on a classic Italian roll, Jersey Subs’ hoagies are definitely big and messy - but also incredibly satisfying.
Want more? Try the ever popular Jimmy John’s. Not only are they open ‘till 3 AM, but they also deliver which couldn’t be more perfect for those times when you can’t muster the energy to leave the dorm for too long (or put on real pants). I ordered the Vegetarian, which is not just for tofu lovers. Stuffed with provolone cheese, avocado spread, sliced cucumber, lettuce, tomato, and mayo, this sandwich is truly filling. And yet, this hoagie was still light enough that I didn’t feel like I needed to hit the gym immediately afterwards. But what about something fresh and unique? Consider the brand new Which Wich, located across from Rockoff Hall on George Street. This shop is the ultimate place for customization. No matter how strange, there are no limits possible for Which Wich
sandwiches - customers can completely dictate their choice. But just to dip my toe in, I tried their classic hoagie, The Wicked. This sandwich really lives up to its name. With a 5:3 meat-to-cheese ratio, The Wicked is completely stacked with turkey, ham, roast beef, pepperoni, and bacon. The shop lets customers choose their own cheeses, but I personally would suggest the tried and true provolone, swiss, and pepperjack combination. And thanks to Which Wich’s unlimited toppings, I also included lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickles. Sometimes dreams really do come true. But with Which Wich, you better have a hearty appetite, because these hoagies will have you happy and full. Make sure to go out and get one of these yummy hoagies for yourself! Trust me, they’re worth the trip.

ith all the superhero movies coming out in recent years, it’s no wonder there’s been a serious spike in comic-book hype. Comic stores are popping up all over the place, and more people then ever are looking to be a part of this graphic-novel frenzy. But what’s good, where do I start, what do I read? TRIM’s got you covered. We’ve dug deep to find you the best comics to get you started and keep you coming back for more.
The Classic Superhero
Movies You Didn’t Know Were Comics
#1 Rated New Comics
Amazing Spider-Man Series
Scott Pilgrim (Vol. 1-6)
The Humans
Stan Lee and Steve Ditko
Bryan Lee-O’Malley
Tom Neely, Keenan Marshall Keller and Kristina Collantes
Widely considered to be the ultimate classic when approaching the Marvel omniverse. Follow smart and sassy Peter Parker as he battles the villains who pose threats to New York City.
23-year-old bassist Scott Pilgrim has to battle seven evil ex-boyfriends before he can date Ramona, his dream girl with roller-blades and technicolor hair. Did we mention he already has a (high-school) girlfriend..?
Planet of the Apes meets Apocalypse Now meets Sons of Anarchy. Biker gangs, PTSD, psychedelic drugs, human slaves that are forced to fight each other for entertainment. A lot is going on, along with amazing color work by Kristina Collantes.
Uncanny X-Men (Specifically Giant Size X-Men #1)
Watchmen
Ms. Marvel (2014)
Len Wein and Dave Cockrum
Alan Moore
Wilson Alfona
The X-Men plotlines are perhaps the most convoluted in the Marvel universe. That said, ‘Giant Size’ is a great place to ease into them and they’re well worth it.
A conspiracy plot against masked superheroes reveals the destructive nature of humanity’s guardians. This graphic novel put the “Antihero” archetype back on the map, and it’ll surely keep your eyes glued to the page.
Jersey City’s Kamala Khan is gifted with superpowers, and must balance her commitment to helping others, Islam, and being a normal teenage girl. She’ll have you cheering her on!
Sin City
Jillian and Mariko Tamaki
Miller made it a point to “give Batman his balls back,” as he so eloquently put it. In the book, Bruce Wayne, now in his 50s, retired from being the Batman years prior after superheroes were outlawed. After witnessing his city being torn apart by a new gang known as The Mutants, he dons the cape and cowl for one last crusade. He’s less of a noble hero and more of a jaded old man with a death wish and hatred for crime.
Frank Miller
This subtle, intelligent read stars two female teenagers dealing with issues that are particularly important to those in young adulthood (boys, self-image. etc.) Most of all, the book pulls off the clever trick of rendering nostalgia without romanticism, and captures the feel of summer when it actually meant something. Paired with beautifully rendered drawings and color work, this is a great one to sit on the porch with.

In this blood-soaked, neo-noir world, violence, hookers, and sharp diaoluge dominate a landscape that’s one of the most expansive and detailed that we’ve seen. The author gives us hard-boiled testosterone, while the internal monologues of his characters showcase inner torment and misery that fit in perfectly with their crusty environment.

Effie Liu:
LISTEN
In Conversation we sat down and had a talk with the pink haired lady. By Justin Swanson
E
ffie Liu is the real deal: an eclectic pop songstress committed to her vision, and an avid businesswoman who understands the game. She grew up in California, where her creative spirit first blossomed, and now she lives in Brooklyn; a stark pink contrast against the music scene she is becoming a leader of. So, how important are visuals to you in your music?
To Effie they’re inseparable. “I’ve been a visual person since an early age, ever since I could pick up a marker to draw with. I also studied fashion design back in Los Angeles.”
PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHIRLEY YU
So why pink? Why is it such a consistent color in your aesthetic?
“Well, there’s three main parts to that story…When I was really young, I remember my parents painting the walls of my room pink. I hated it!” Later on when she was listening to a lot of punk rock, she found an amazing vintage black and hot pink plaid skirt- to Effie these unusual colors symbolized a rebellion against the standard plaid garbed punk. She started basing her whole wardrobe around this one pink and black plaid skirt. Fast forward to a few years ago: her best friend/ hair stylist whips out a bucket of hot pink dye, and starts applying it-without asking Effie. That’s what friends are for. Her style, and her hair, are the embodiment of her music:
Embrace your individuality, and celebrate what makes you, you. What are your musical influences, and what messages do you want to push?
“When I first got to New York, I ended up vibing with people in the rap scene. The beats in rap music just make you want to move.” Her single, “Wings on Fleek” – a girly anthem about eyeliner – features monochrome color palettes, an army of pink haired badass chicks, and appropriate representation of the LGBT community. “In the music industry and our culture, many women often treat each other badly,” and Effie wants to celebrate the feminine bond women share. What can we expect with your new music?
“More pop songs… and more singing, compared to some of my older songs like ‘Gimme All Your Money.’” Her most recent single “Get Away” is a bombastic, tropical island infused swig of pop that mixes breezy vocals and balearic bounce before going down smooth. With technology and social media being prevalent, how do you approach them as an artist?
“Consistency!” In image, message, and sound. In a way, it’s like making a cake. “You need to create a consistent batter, with all of the right ingredients, and pink frosting, of course. The internet is amazing because
today anyone can express themselves and get their message directly to people that care out there.” Although the internet and our culture are saturated with information, according to Effie, “realness” will still show through. As a result, authenticity in one’s message is valued by our society, which is exactly what makes Effie’s music, and broader artistic vision, so outstanding. In a sense, Effie is still like that vintage pink plaid skirt; although she has her roots in a deeper historical dialogue, there is a freshness and sense of individuality in Effie’s music and image that sets her apart from the rest. She is a genuine person, with a genuine message - and a genuine desire to celebrate life.

Body Shots Feeling adventurous? Why not try a body shot? A classic (not to mention sexy) way to get the party started, we’ve got some of the best recipes to get you going!
Check out more drink recipes on the TRIM Blog at trimmagazine.net
By Zelda Boters
DRIPPING RUM
SALTY PRETZEL
You’re probably familiar with this body shot. One of the most widely known types, a navel shot is when one partner drinks liquor out of another person’s belly button. Fun, and possibly a bit tingly. This classic shot comes with three steps. First, place salt on your partner’s thigh, and a lime wedge on their upper body (usually in-between their lips). After pouring a shot of tequila in their navel, lean over and lick the salt off your partner’s body, and suck the liquor out of their belly button. When you’re finished, use your mouth to take the lime out of the other’s mouth. Feel free to switch places afterwards and let your partner take the next shot!
You might want to grab a friend (a very good friend)- this can get messy. For these shots, you’ll be licking liquor straight off of your partner’s half naked body. While your partner lies down, have a friend drip a shot of rum down your partner’s chest and stomach. As the rum coats their torso, lean over and lap it up with your tongue, until every drop is gone. This shot is more intimate than the last - instead of using your mouth to suck a shot out of your partner’s belly button, you’ll be running your tongue up and down their upper body. Fun for parties...and maybe for behind the scenes too. Just be careful to not let the alcohol drip onto their clothes. Or do!
If you’re looking for an unusual shot with southern roots, this one’s for you cowboy (or cowgirl)! Not leaving that usual bitter taste in your throat (that often requires a chaser), this recipe calls for a sweet, more friendly flavor. In other words, it’s delicious. The ingredients are equal parts of the following:Vanilla Vodka, Butterscotch Schnapps, and Frangelico. Shake the mixture over ice. The next part is where it gets fun. Have your partner lay on their belly and arch their back. Put a bit of salt above their arch, pour a bit out of the shaker into their arch, and sip! Don’t forget to lick the salt!

You might not have the spare cash for a wine night, but that shouldn’t stop you from piquing your curiosity! Indeed, consider dropping by the nearest vineyard for wine tasting. Grab some fresh air in a beautiful vineyard landscape, and drink fine wine to your hearts’ content with your partner. Best of all, many vineyards offer wine tasting for a low price - if not free altogether.

STRIP CUPS
SEXY DICE
TEASER
If you’ve played a few rounds of beer pong before, you’ll be familiar with this game. In Strip Cups, setup a table with six solo cups on each side (drinks optional!) Take turns with your partner bouncing ping pong balls as you try to score a cup on the other side. After each score, tell your partner to strip something off... just remember that your partner can ask you to do the same!
Looking for something a little unexpected in the bedroom? With these dice, you’ll never know what you’ll be doing next!
This one is perhaps our naughtiest game yet, and our longest too. But if you’re looking for a challenge - and want to get a little frisky - then you’ll love this one.
After a few cups along, things are sure to get intense. And whoever clears the other side first gets one free favor of your choice. Don’t confine yourself to just one setup, though! Feel free to try a variety of playstyles, and find out which one works best for you. Just remember to strip responsibly!
Sexy dice are a fun way to add something new and sensual into your sex life. To play this game, one partner rolls two dice - one indicating an action and the other a place. Each partner takes turns performing their actions from touching to kissing, to... Dice come in a variety of styles. Partners can tease each other with oral dice, or get a little naughtier with sex dice. You can order a pair of these online, although your local sex shop should also have a few. Pick the pair that works best for you, and best of luck - you’re sure to score a few favors as a reward!
First, start by picking a day that you and your partner will be out, preferably for a long period of time. While you’re spending the day together, whisper to your partner, and start flirting back and forth with them. Start simple and cute, but gradually ramp up your whispers until they’re full on feisty. Keep at it throughout the day until your partner can’t stop thinking of you. And once you get home… that’s when the real fun starts! The key to this game is keeping your partner hooked throughout the day, so be sure to pace yourself and have fun. T R I M S P R I N G / S U M M E R 2 0 1 5 20

Summertime evokes memories of long lazy days from the past, and this summer, we’re paying homage to those of a past generation. That’s right - retro swimwear has made a comeback, and it’s here to stay. High-waisted bikini bottoms, bustier tops, and one-pieces mark this summer’s trends for women. Driving the style further, polka dots and floral prints give the suits a more vintage feel, while triangle and arrow patterns update it for a more modern look. Ironically, the men’s style rejects long trunks in favor of shorter board shorts in nautical themes, similar to European swimwear. So as the heat of the season approaches, we encourage you to stay cool, and channel your inner 1950’s at the beach or the pool! By Emily Beckman

Neutral Toned Blazer
It’s important to be able to adapt to the culture of the company you’re working at. Dress modestly at first to gauge what is appropriate while sticking to your personal style.
After eating lunch or having a quick snack, you never know what might fall on your lap! Save a Tide to Go in your desk to remove any unwanted stains.
Why would you need a cardigan in the middle of summer? Because offices tend to blast the air conditioning year round, of course. So keep a cardigan handy!
A tailored neutral toned blazer will never fail to keep you looking slick, and prepared to take on any task coming your way.
Iron Your Clothes
Paying attention to detail is crucial to getting the job done and impressing your boss—this includes having well-kept clothes. Iron your clothes the night before and keep them flat to insure they stay wrinkle free.
Layers Please!
Layer your shirts, cardigans, or sweaters. Using layers, you’ll have an endless combination of patterned shirts that compliment your cardigan or overshirt.
Many office dress codes include jeans and button-ups. If so, feel free to wear denim, but avoid jeans with distressing.
Sock Up
Colorful socks featuring fun simple illustrative designs (toucans, or anchors for example) can be a fun and trendy way to spice up a pair of slacks or rolled-up jean at the office. 23 T R I M S P R I N G / S U M M E R 2 0 1 5

: t er p x E Ask The Banishing Blemishes By Francesca Falzon
With our high school years behind us, you may think acne is a problem of the past. Not so fast! A 2008 study by the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology confirmed approx. 47% of people in their 20’s are afflicted by acne. We sat down with Westfield-based dermatologist Dr. Phoebe Lu to learn more about how to get healthy, clear skin and treat acne flair-ups. TRIM:There seems to be the common misconception that “acne” refers exclusively to red, inflamed blemishes. Can
you elaborate on the types of acne that exist? Lu: Acne can exist as whiteheads, blackheads, pimples, cysts and deeper nodules. Some patients have only one type of acne while others can have combinations of the above. TRIM:What ingredients should people with acne look for in their products, and at what percentages? Lu: Two of the most common over-the-counter products to treat acne include salicylic acid and
benzoyl peroxide. These ingredients can be found in washes, gels, lotions, creams and pads. Salicylic acid helps to unclog pores and exfoliate the skin. Benzoyl peroxide works well for inflammatory acne and has antibacterial activity. Salicylic acid preparations can come in 0.5% to 2% concentrations while benzoyl peroxide formulations can go up to 10%. Depending on how dry or oily your skin is, the higher concentrations may not necessarily be better, as they can be more drying and irritating.
TRIM:What are some important tricks to incorporate into our daily lives in order to help minimize occurrence and/ or spreading of acne? Lu: Wash makeup brushes and change makeup sponges once per week. Make sure any cleansers, moisturizers, or makeup you use are labeled as “oil-free” or “non-comedogenic.” Check your hair products as well to make sure they’re not making you break out. Try to shower immediately after exercising. Wash your pillowcases regularly. TRIM:What kind of skin regime do you recommend in the warmer months? Lu: Wash your face in the morning and at night with
a gentle, oil-free skin cleanser. Apply an oil-free sunscreen (SPF 30 or greater) in the morning, and reapply every two to three hours if you are outdoors. You can use oil-blotting sheets to absorb excess oil, but if you have been sweating a lot, consider washing your face when you come back inside. TRIM: Any final words of wisdom for our readers? Lu: There is no immediate or overnight cure for acne. The key is to be persistent and consistent with medications. It can take six to eight weeks before an acne regimen starts to work so don’t be frustrated if there is no change in the first week or two. In fact, some medications may initially cause acne to flare before it starts to get better. If the product yields no results after the intial trial, it may be time to switch regimens.

Since the launch of her channel, IamJustaMakeupLover, in October 2009, Rutgers student Olena Mishchenko has created hundreds of YouTube videos, covering everything from makeup tutorials (her original claim to fame) to lifestyle tips. The estimated income of Olena’s online career is at least $1,500/ month, trending even higher with the inclusion of sponsored products. With nearly 8 million views to her channel, it is obvious that Olena’s glittering personality and impressive talent keeps her subscribers hooked. Describing herself as a nerd with a passion for makeup, TRIM sat down with this Ukrainian beauty guru to discover how a full-time supply chain management major can balance her studies and a demanding career as a YouTuber.
TRIM: When did you fall in love with makeup? Olena Mischenko: I started using makeup for dance competitions and saw how it made me more confident when I went on stage. Obviously stage makeup is a whole lot different than that of an everyday look, but the confidence doesn’t necessarily depend on how much makeup you wear, it’s what you’re comfortable with! That’s when I stopped looking at makeup as something superficial. I’m not in love with makeup; I’m in love with the way it makes people feel. I truly believe everyone is beautiful and makeup enhances that beauty! Once someone sees their reflection and can say that they feel beautiful, my job is done! It’s not only a way for me to express my creativity, but now it’s a way for me to teach people to be confident in themselves. TRIM: Why did you decide to put yourself on YouTube? OM: Freshman year of high school definitely wasn’t the easiest year of my life. I felt alone and forgotten, so when I stumbled upon a community of people who simply made videos from their rooms, I wanted so desperately to be a part of it. They were all friends and had such a great time just talking about the
43 T R I M S P R I N G / S U M M E R 2 0 1 5
things they loved! One girl, a friend of mine at the time, knew I loved watching these Youtubers and suggested I create a channel! So I created the channel name IamJustaMakeupLover, but hesitated to actually upload a video for a long time. Eventually I realized that I started talking to myself when I’d do my makeup as if I was already a YouTuber. That’s when you know it’s time to turn the camera on and actually make the video! TRIM: What was the response to your first video? OM: My first video was terrible quality, no mic, no studio lighting, no editing what-so-ever. I was so happy and received really great comments on my videos, but not so much at school! Obviously when you put yourself out there, you expect varying opinions and rude individuals. What I did not expect was my school to find out. Plenty of people who I did not associate with started making jokes about my channel. It spread fast and there was no stopping it. From that time, I started using those comments to fuel my passion, to prove them wrong, and to show them I am capable of amazing things. I not only make videos on makeup and beauty, I influence millions of girls looking for a role model, an inspiration, and a friend. I receive countless messages, letters, emails, and comments asking for advice and direction. At the beginning of 2014, I barely had 50,000 subscribers and around 1 million views, but now I’m starting 2015 with over 160,000 subscribers and around 8 million views! I used to be able to reply to every comment, every message, but now I can barely keep up with my emails!
It’s not only a way for me to express my creativity, but now it’s a way for me to teach people to be confident in themselves.

TRIM: Approximately how long does it take you to shoot, edit, and upload a video? OM: It all depends on the type of video. Tutorials can take anywhere from one hour of filming to three hours of filming, while videos consisting of multiple locations or many parts can take from four to eight hours. Editing usually takes between one to four hours not including the hour or two of processing. The uploading is the worst, it depends on the Wifi so uploading usually takes 4 hours and then processing depends on whether YouTube likes to cooperate, it could vary from 15 minutes to 7 hours! This is all per video. I usually have 2 videos per week so it can get very busy! TRIM: Have you ever been recognized on Rutgers campus? OM: I have, many times! It’s honestly so amazing! I love meeting my viewers because I seriously feel like they are my friends that I simply haven’t actually met yet! Being able to actually meet them face-to-face is really great because I can finally put a face to the usernames! One of my closest friends actually came up to me in class and asked if I made YouTube videos and our friendship blossomed from there! I don’t really publicize where I go to school so when they do run into me they aren’t expecting it so it’s a lot more fun! TRIM: What is the hardest part about being a YouTuber? OM: By putting yourself out there, you are prone to getting judged. Everyone obviously has an opinion, whether good or bad, but some people like to voice their thoughts in a not so nice way. I luckily for some unapparent reason have been blessed to not have as many rude people on my channel, however I come across some channels whose comments are simply tearing the YouTuber apart. There are gossip sites about us where people who don’t have facts straight just put us down and try to unveil some deep dark secrets as if we are hiding that we’re Voldemort! It’s silly and if you don’t have a strong backbone or ability to shake it off, you’ll get crushed and lost in the negativity.
TRIM: What is the best part? OM: On the other hand, the love and support from my viewers is what motivates me every single day. I don’t know what I have done to deserve such an amazing support system. They encourage me to pursue my dreams and are always there to cheer me up when I need it! It isn’t a one-way street; I’m here for them as much as they are for me, and that is something I try to stress as much as possible. I look forward to their comments and their letters just as much as they look forward to my videos! I literally scream for joy when I get a letter in my PO Box. I see my viewers as my friends and I want them to see me the same way. Just because I spend a lot of my time talking to camera does not make me any different. I spend just as much time watching Netflix as anyone else! TRIM: Summer is coming! What makeup tips do you have for TRIMsters who want to look good on the beach? What about at a summer barbeque/ party? OM: First of all, SPF all the way. This means whether you need coverage or not, you better be wearing it on your face. I usually go for a tinted moisturizer because they are light and almost undetectable. If you don’t have one, take your moisturizer and foundation, mix them on the back of your hand and bada-boom you have your tinted moisturizer! Then go in with a cream concealer (creams hold up better against water) and spot treat areas you really need covered like blemishes and dark spots. Next, curl your lashes and apply some waterproof mascara. Apply some setting spray and it will stay all day! TRIM: What are your best tips about transforming your makeup from day to night? OM: I love to add some dark brown or black eye shadow smudged along the upper lash line. This cleans up your eyeliner from the day, and just makes everything a lot smokier. I see this as a classic night look. I would also take a nice warm brown shade and lightly fade
that on the outer lower lash line! Take some black eyeliner and line the upper and lower water line. Then, I usually (very carefully) curl my lashes by pumping the lash curler not actually squeezing and holding to just really open my eyes and make my mascara look better than what it is at the end of the day. Then go ahead and apply another coat of SUPER BLACK mascara to darken them up and keep the curl. You could also go ahead and apply false lashes instead of all this trouble, but I know most girls don’t want to mess with false lashes because they can get you into sticky situations! TRIM: Do you have any role models in the beauty industry? OM: Kandee Johnson, most definitely. She is unbelievably talented and has such a kind heart. Watching her YouTube videos taught me so much about makeup and the industry. No matter what, each time you watch her video you’re left in a good mood. Her kindness and generosity is contagious. Kandee has overcome so many different obstacles throughout her life, but continues to be an amazing mother, an inspirational YouTuber, and an overall great person. I’ve been lucky enough to meet her on several occasions and each time, her love really shines. TRIM: Where do you see yourself in five year? Ten years? OM: I don’t know. I’ll like to see myself still doing YouTube, but only time can tell! I don’t like to plan my future. I just let it happen. I trust God has a plan for me, and who wants to ruin the surprise? I hope to have a job I love, surround myself with people that support me, and be happy doing whatever it is I want to do that year, that month, that day, that moment.

ROADTRIP or how to eat well, travel smart, and sleep on strangers’ couches By Raj Patel

or a lot of us, vacation means spending tons of money on hotels, drinks, and travel that would be better spent on textbooks or (let’s face it) those loan payments. But it doesn’t have to be that way! We’ve got the best plans for how not to break your bank on an awesome summer vaca!
Food
If your plan is to stop at a drive-thru or pick up snacks at a gas station every time you get hungry, you’ll blow through your cash in no-time. Bring a cooler and pack it with some sandwiches. Consider filling it with foods that have a long shelf-life, or are easily prepared. Also, pick up some bulk-sized snacks and gallons of water. Bringing frozen hotdogs, hamburgers, and a travel grill can also be a cheap alternative, especially if you plan on camping.

Hotels should simply not be an option, especially with the plentiful alternatives that are available on the road. Airbnb (airbnb.com) is a service in which people rent out rooms in their houses across the world. Camping is also a fairly cheap option, and there are camping grounds located all over the country (although many require a reservation). Or you could try Couchsurfing. You might feel like renting a minivan or a camper for your road trip, but truth be told - you don’t need one. If you pack lightly, you can save money by driving your own car. And if you don’t have a car - don’t fret! There’s still some good options on the road, as long as you plan out your route. ollowing a strict diet is hard enough, yet finding the diet that is right for you seems almost more difficult. With constantly changing fads, it can seem like the real purpose of diets - to reshape your meal plan and improve your health - is getting buried under celebrity endorsements and bad information. In part, this confusion over dietary plans starts with the constant shuffling of popularity that diets have been facing over the past few years. The disarray makes dieting seem more like a fad than a scientifically proven way of improving your health. Despite all this noise in the public, scientists and doctors alike are still working hard to find proven dietary solutions that will help you lose weight and get your health back in order. Based on where medical research has led us so far, TRIM found the top diets (along with some tasty recipes) to fit into you schedule and slim your waist line.

DASH Diet
Weight Watchers
Ornish Diet
Also known as the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension, is not new to the scientific community. But it still holds up today. In fact, the U.S. and World News Report on the Best Diets of 2015 ranked the DASH Diet as #1 Overall Diet for the fifth year in a row, based on the evaluation of numerous nutritionists and medical experts. This diet was originally developed to reduce high blood pressure, but has been proven since to lead to many other favorable health outcomes - such as weight loss, better heart health, and diabetes prevention. The diet emphasizes the consumption of “real food”, calling for a heavy amount of fruit and veggies with a balance of proteins and whole grains. In practice, the DASH Diet is not too difficult to follow, as such common dishes as pasta with veggies and roasted chicken are included. At many restaurants you can replace burger patties with chicken or turkey, and those fatty fries with broccoli or a side of fruit. All in all, it can be a pretty easy diet to get hooked on.
Sometimes, it’s not just scientists that are cranking out good nutritional diets. The Weight Watchers Diet - also known as “PointsPlus” - is a successful commercial diet that has been in the mainstream for years now. Why? Not only is it efficient, but it’s also super easy to stay on track. Unlike your average diet, PointsPlus doesn’t have any guidelines for what kind of foods to eat. Instead, it requires a monthly fee in exchange for a program that tracks points based on the foods you already eat. This points system helps you determine what you should be eating, and how much. It’s main goal is to guide you to cutting calories in order to lose weight. You can find tons of different Weight Watchers snacks, desserts, and prepared meals in supermarkets and for sale on thier website. A lot of restaurants also endorse PointsPlus, offering meals with exact point values listed next to them. It definitely comes at a price, but if your goal is to lose weight, Weight Watchers has been proven to work wonders.
The Ornish Diet was introduced by Dean Ornish – a medical professor at the University of California, San Francisco. Ornish’s dietary plan is ambitious, and claims to make you lose weight, live longer, and feel better overall. Indeed, the diet has proven to help improve your heart’s health, and can be tailored to fit various specific health concerns - from weight loss to preventing breast cancer. The diet categorizes food into 5 different groups, from most helpful (1) to least (5). It’s the difference between a soy hot-dog compared to a pork or beef. The Ornish Diet also has a variety of recipes and stresses high-fiber foods, so you’ll have plenty of ways to stay fuller longer. The Ornish Diet also emphasises aerobic exercise and meditation, so be sure to set out 30 minutes a day for a little stretching and deep breathing. Budgets shouldn’t be an issue either because of its flexibility. However, if your looking for a diet to drop pounds in a flash, this one isn’t for you. It’s more for people looking for long-term health benefits.

Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface, and knead lightly 4 or 5 times; dough may be slightly sticky. 6. Pat dough into a 5-inch circle on a baking sheet coated with cooking spray. 7. Cut circle into 4 wedges; separate wedges slightly. 8. Brush milk over dough and sprinkle with 1 teaspoon sugar. 9. Bake for 14 minutes or until golden.
1. Fill an ice-cube tray with low-fat or non-fat milk (about 1-1½ cups fills one tray). 2. Freeze 3 hours or until solid. If cubes are difficult to release from tray, thaw slightly at room temperature or dip tray in large pan of hot water. 3. To crack cubes, place in heavy-duty plastic bag; seal bag. Crush with mallet or rolling pin. (If you have an electric blender with a strong motor, crushing the cubes may not be necessary.) 4. Use milk ice cubes in blended dairy drinks instead of ice cubes made with water. Extra cubes can be stored in a plastic zipper bag. 5. Combine all ingredients in electric blender container. Whirl until smooth. Spoon into serving glass and garnish with lemon zest, if desired.
1. Rinse the quinoa in a medium strainer; drain. 2. Place in a kettle with the vegetable broth and bring to a boil. 3. Reduce the heat, cover, and simmer for 10 to 15 minutes, or until all the water is absorbed. Transfer the quinoa to a large bowl. 4. Add the tomatoes, cucumber, celery, parsley, mint, carrots, green onions, and garlic. 5. Toss with the lemon juice. 6. Chill at least one hour before service.

Remember that not everyone’s resume will look exactly the same. Each resume depends on the industry you are pursuing and your own personal experiences. Despite what different employers are looking for, there is one common denominator that everyone can and should use to their advantage: Employers search for previous experience that proves your willingness to work, and your capability to apply analytical thought processes into your career. Keep this pearl of wisdom and the four tips listed above tucked at the back of your mind, and prepare to impress!

HAVE OTHERS EDIT IT WITH YOU “OH , YOU FLATTER ME!” WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR THEM NOT ALL ABOUT GRADES
You may have gone over this thing a million and half times to make sure everything is just right.Yet, you can never be too careful. Always have a couple other people read over it to check for any mistakes that you may have glazed over in the excitement of this new job possibility.
A little buttering up never hurt anyone. Companies love to hear that you know about them, that you like who they are and what they do. It’s always good to put in a sentence about how you admire the work that they do and that you would be pleased to help them continue doing it.
Though it may seem like a good idea to talk about how this new career could benefit your growing skill-set, make sure that you also talk about how your already developed talents can prove useful for their company. Show your prospective employer why you’re worth their time and the job.
A lot of people make the mistake of focusing on their educational background. In the end, hiring managers care most about your past work experiences (and yes, internship and volunteering work counts) and what you can deliver on the first day you walk through the door.

Well, not quite. Every summer job comes with its problems, and there’s

Relying on A

aiting on tables sounds like a fast way to
earn cash right?
Well, not exactly.
Customers come in all
shapes and sizes. Here at TRIM Magazine, our Editor-in-Chief Katie Belloff loves to share her experiences as a waitress. We sat down with her, and asked her some questions about her own personal pet peeves on the job. “The hours are never consistent,” she tells TRIM. “There’s a start time, but the end time is all based on when you get ‘cut’ (when you leave). If it’s busy, you can be at work for 12 hours with no break. It’s rough. And forget going out on the weekends. If you want a weekend night off, you better request it weeks in advance, because getting someone to cover for you (for free at least) is like finding a needle in a haystack.” And customers can be pretty needy. “It’s especially difficult when I’m busy with four or five tables and there’s one party that needs something every other minute. Serving is largely based on balancing your time, and when one table is far needier then others, it can throw everything off.” And the pay? “It has its ups and downs,” she tells us. “Some people can be really generous,
and you can leave a shift with $200 cash in your pocket. But that’s not every night. And the resturant pays you about $2 an hour, enough to cover the taxes you have to pay. So if I make $40 in tips after 8 hours, that’s it.” Yet one of her biggest problems is customers who behave inappropriately during her shift. “Being hit on as a server can be tough” she explains. “Especially if it’s someone really out of my age group. They can be pretty obvious about staring and it can completely ruin your relationship with the table.” However, Belloff tells us it’s not all bad. “Sometimes you can get a really fun table with a guy who’s flirting and just make the best of it. I have a boyfriend so I never leave numbers, but doing a little flirting back can land you a nicer tip.” In the end, our Editor in Chief knows that the grind can be, well, a grind, but every jobs has it’s perks. “I do have my ‘regulars’ that come in to see me and talk. They always tip well and put me in a great mood for the rest of the shift. They really make the whole serving gig worth it.”

Lifegaurding means keeping people safe and helping all the patrons of the beach have a fun time... right? Well we hate to burst
your bubble, but patrons
aren’t always grateful. In fact,
some can cause a lot of trouble during your stay. This past April, lifeguards Gregory Fazekas and Samantha Johnston shared a little bit of their own experiences lifeguarding at NJ beaches. “A pretty common saying with beach guards is ‘Lifeguarding would be the best job in the world if it wasn’t for the people,’” Fazekas told TRIM Magazine. During the summer season, Fazekas serves as part of the Seaside Heights Beach Patrol. “Whether its kids sneaking alcohol on the beach or patrons refusing to listen to your instructions; the human aspect of this job is where the stress comes from,” he said.“I’ve witnessed guards cold clocked by random beach patrons, I’ve had patrons spit insults at me all because I asked them to move away from the rip-current,” he told TRIM. “... I’ve rescued someone, brought them to shore only to have the mother scream and start hitting me, claiming that ‘My daughter didn’t need your help! You were just trying to grab some ass! ’ Keep in mind, this girl (8 years old) was still coughing up water.” Samantha Johnston also has her own complaints about private lifeguarding duty. “Being on a private beach, we still get some people that insist on making their own rules,” she explains. “Generally, its during 4th of July weekend, where we get one of the wealthy beach owners that complains to me about the amount of people on “their” beach, expecting me to do something about it,” she told TRIM.“This can become a sticky situation, because the homeowners technically are your supervisors.” All in all, Fazekas and Johnston know that lifeguarding is about protecting and saving lives, and that can sometimes be all the motivation you need to keep doing the job.

LIFE LITTLE THEATER
PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARIA ALBA
R
utgers certainly has its fair share of interesting myths. Ever since the university was founded back in 1766, legends have been passed down about dreamy places to wander around campus, both day and night. Clearly Rutgers is no stranger to interesting settings, and plenty of them flourish on our campus. But just how unique is the history of Rutgers University’s halls? While natural and supernatural legends alike make their way around campus, no two stories are the same, and every student seems to have their own personal favorite place. At TRIM, we decided to compile some of our top picks. If you’d like to check these out for yourself, be our guest!
A few blocks away from Cabaret Theater sits a lesser known playhouse - the Little Theater. Surrounded by trees, the theater truly feels tucked away.Yet, inside, the playhouse is hiding a little secret. According to legend, the theater is haunted by Jane Inge, who directed the playhouse from the 1920s to the 1950s. She lived in the apartment above the theater, and rumor states she’s never left. According to the Midnight Society, the theater was closed down after light beams fell down during a performance. And while the building still hosts rehearsals and classes, many patrons allege to have witnessed the ghost of an old woman in a white dress sing and play the piano. Local legend says when the theater lights flicker, Jane Inge herself is trying to draw the actors’ attention. One paranormal group, Rutgers Rarities, claims to have captured a “specter” of light swaying in the darkness on film. Perhaps Inge was waiting for her next play to begin.
THE KISSING BRIDGE & PASSION PUDDLE
Since this is not the Pont des Arts, the Kissing Bridge will have to do. Also known as the “Ravine Bridge,” the Kissing Bridge connects the Cook and Douglass campuses, which are otherwise divided by a charming stream. According to “The Bridges of New Jersey: Portraits of Garden State Crossings,” this pedestrian bridge is one of the few suspension bridges still existing in the state, which may explain its other name - “the Shaking.” Legend has it that if a female student receives a kiss from a male student on the bridge, the couple will go steady or get married within a year. But if the two lovers really want to seal the deal, they should first stop by Passion Puddle - a shaded, picturesque pond on Douglass campus. As the story goes, if a Douglass girl and a Cook boy hold hands and stroll around Passion Puddle three times, they will live happily ever after together.Yet another version of the myth states that the couple will be engaged within a year.
OLD QUEENS GATE
If you are a Rutgers student, and cherish your future luck and success, don’t even think about walking under the gate on Old Queens Campus. Officially known as the Class of 1902 Memorial Gateway, the Old Queens Gate is one of four wrought-iron gates on College Avenue, and each gate is over a century old. Back when the commencement ceremony for Rutgers College was held on Voorhees Mall, graduating seniors would march their procession through the Old Queens Gate and across Hamilton Street to the ceremony. Indeed, while graduation ceremonies have moved to High Point Solutions Stadium, superstition warns that a student should only walk through the gate on two days: convocation and graduation. If one passes through the gate at any other time during their time as an undergraduate at Rutgers, then the student is doomed to live every academic’s nightmare – they will fail to graduate in four years’ time. So, what’s the lesson here? Make sure all of those tuition dollars pay off, and avoid the shortcut through Old Queens when you are running late to class on College Avenue.
WILLIE THE SILENT’S QUIET WHISTLE
At the north end of the Voorhees Mall stands a statue of William, Prince of Orange, hero of the Netherlands. Biologist Fenton B. Turck gifted William to the university in 1928. And ever since, William has become a landmark statue on the College Avenue campus - so much so, that Rutgers students have dubbed him the title “Willie the Silent.” Yet Willie also has a little secret. According to local legend, the statute isn’t entirely silent. When a virgin student walks past Willie, a quiet whistle ushers from his still lips. Is the myth true? Well, since the statute has been built, supposedly the statue has never whistled. That doesn’t mean Willie can’t whistle, though! Feel free to grab a (virgin) friend and find out for yourself.
