THE ARTS

Express yourself.

You say you’re not artistic. You’ll surprise yourself. Maybe you sing like a star, and your charcoal sketches could grace a gallery. Or maybe you only hum in the shower and doodle in the margins. Whether you’re a seasoned artist or newly creative, we’ll introduce you to a variety of art forms so you can discover and nurture your passions. We teach our art classes in a step-by-step manner—how to match pitch, to throw a pot, to draw a line. Even if you think you’re not artistic, you’ll build on these skills over time so you can develop your own creativity and awaken the artist in you. We believe that cultivating self-expression builds confidence and focus, which is why art classes are central to our curriculum. You’ll take at least one year of music, theater, visual arts, art history, or music appreciation, with the opportunity to continue on to advanced-level classes. Your instructors are teachers and accomplished professional artists who are active in their fields. You’ll learn from the best, and you’ll do it in our Arts Center, a showpiece in itself, which houses a 400-seat theater, rehearsal spaces, practice rooms, and a dark room, as well as studios for pottery and painting. So go ahead—unlock your imagination.

Sing (act, draw, paint) your heart out. VISUAL ARTS Our visual arts classes will stretch your creativity, whether you’re sketching your first self-portrait, sculpting a clay mask, or developing black and white images in the darkroom. Dive into a medium that supports your interests and experience with your choice of foundation-level to advanced courses in drawing, painting, pottery, photography, and digital media.

MUSIC Feel the rhythm in our choral and instrumental classes, which are the heart of the music curriculum. Whatever your experience, you’ll develop new skills, learn new instruments, and hone your musical voice. You can expand your musical vocabulary in AP Music Theory. Try out for the Trinitones to perform a cappella on and off campus. Or form a band with some friends and join in the annual Trinity-Pawling Rock Concert.

THEATER You might shine in a leading role or delight the crowd as the comedic sidekick. However you’re cast, you’ll have three opportunities to act in a major play each year produced by the Drama Society. If you’re itching to write your own play, direct a short skit, or keep us guessing with improv performances, there’s room for you, too. Not made for the spotlight? The show goes on with your help backstage on lighting and set construction.

You can learn art, just like you learn Spanish. You don’t roll over as a newborn and say, ‘I’m good at Spanish.’ You have to learn words and put sentences together. The same is true for the arts. N E D R E A D E , C HA I R M A N OF T H E A R T S

LET NYC INSPIRE YOU. The hub of art and culture—New York City—is our neighbor to the south! Throughout the year, you’ll hop on a train to visit some of the world’s finest museums, galleries, and concert halls. Join our Broadway Series Pass program to see highly acclaimed theater productions.

I was usually the quiet kid in middle school. I was afraid to stand up in front of crowds. Then I came here and tried out for a play, and now I’m doing shows every year. It pushed me out of my comfort zone, and I found my passion. HU N T E R OLS T E I N ’ 1 7
