THE CENTER FOR LEARNING ACHIEVEMENT

Reaching potentıal— and beyond.

As teachers, we understand that our students’ challenges and opportunities vary—things that are very simple for one boy are challenging and effortful for another. But we are not going to lower the bar because we always look at the potential of each boy. RO BERTA L ID L , DIRECTOR OF THE C ENTER FOR LEARNING AC H I EV EM EN T

Everyone learns differently. We are experts at leading the way. Every year, students with learning differences graduate from Trinity-Pawling prepared for college. These students come to us lacking confidence and disbelieving in their gifts. The Center for Learning Achievement recognizes the potential in each one of our students. We help him achieve his academic goals, renew his confidence, and plan his future. We offer vigorous, sequential, and systematic instructional programs to support our students. Our programs are tailored to boys who have dyslexia and/or a language-based learning difference, to students with executive function challenges, and to international students who lack academic English proficiency. Our dedicated teachers are trained in the successful Orton-Gillingham Approach. The nurturing, yet challenging, learning environment sets the bar high. Rather than simplifying content, we give each boy the tools he needs to process and retain information, unlocking his innate intelligence and curiosity. As students learn and grow in our program, we witness tremendous transformations. Our students draw on newfound strength and resilience to exceed their previous expectations, proving to themselves that they’re capable of academic achievement and success. Most dramatically, our students leave Trinity-Pawling more self-assured than they’ve ever been, armed with the tools required to succeed in college and in life.

Boys arrive uncertain. They graduate confident. LEAD PROGRAM The Language through Enrichment, Analysis and Development Program (LEAD) is vigorous and intense—we never simplify classroom content; we use the proven Orton-Gillingham Approach to make content accessible. Students start from the foundation and learn how to break down words, internalize spelling rules, and understand sentence structures. Our small classes of two or three students allow teachers to recognize the learning needs of each student. Students in the program are enrolled in three courses taken in conjunction with other classes at Trinity-Pawling. Our open-door policy means our instructors are accessible, teaching and guiding students inside and outside of the classroom throughout the day.

ENGLISH MASTERY PROGRAM The English Mastery Program is a two-year program designed to help international students grasp the English language so they can excel in academics at Trinity-Pawling and in college. Using a modified Orton-Gillingham method, we focus on mastering reading comprehension and listening skills before advancing to coursework that enhances written work and analytical abilities.

EXECUTIVE SKILLS PROGRAM The Executive Skills Program is a one-year, college preparatory course for students who need additional support following cognitive processes, such as planning and organizing, working from memory, problem solving, and self-monitoring. Our small classes allow teachers to develop individualized strategies based on each student’s specific needs. We measure progress based on a student’s ability to work independently and to self advocate under a wide range of circumstances—executive functioning traits that are necessary for success in the college environment.

LEARNING LAB Inspired by inquiry, Learning Labs are the unofficial “help desks” of Trinity-Pawling, and their scope is extensive. Students can access faculty, peer tutors, and media specialists for a range of guidance, from basic technology questions to short-term, in-depth writing support.

KURZWEIL 3000 This supportive text-to-speech software is available to students as another tool to help them develop and perfect their reading, writing, and study skills.

After completing the LEAD Program, I have a lot more confidence as a student. I’m no longer nervous when a teacher asks, ‘Can you read this passage to the class?’ Last year, I was writing a seven-page paper, and I thought, ‘Wow I can do something like this. Not only can I do it, but I can have fun doing it.’ When I have to write a paper in college, I know that I have the tools and skills to do it. JE FF THO M P SO N ’ 1 7
