Summer school for-credit “tech” courses are designed to help students ease the congestion of the regular school year by “off-lining” some of their required courses to the summer. Other students may simply wish to augment their education or explore new interests. All courses are hands-on, project-oriented and focus on real-life scenarios and applications. Often projects integrate topics from other TCA courses for extra reinforcement! Regardless of where you are in the technology spectrum, we offer something for you! Reasonable keyboarding skills are presumed. Generally speaking, all assignments are completed in class with very little (if any) outside work required. Parents take note! If you wish to explore these interests, too, you are welcome to join us also! See US Technology Head Kent Pendleton for details. All summer school technology students are requested to bring their TI calculators, a spiral notebook (journal), a three-ring binder, a pencil, pen and USB flash drive to class the first day. A “supply check” that first day will be one of your first grades for the week, so don’t forget your stuff! Also, please bring a sack lunch and a drink...refrigerators will be available. Students will also bring snacks to class on a rotating basis. Credit cannot be given if a student misses more than four hours of class.
The following introductory classes are designed for “beginners” with very little background, confidence or proficiency in the use of contemporary software.
Intro to Multimedia
n Section 1: June 15–19, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. n Entering grades: 8–12 n Fee: $410 (includes the cost of a textbook) n Prerequisites: none n 1 Trimester of Upper School Technology credit for US students n Parents/teachers are welcome in this class.
Students will learn to organize, illustrate and deliver ideas and information in a fast and professional manner using PowerPoint’s slide show format. Text, pictures, charts/graphs, audio/video will be incorporated into presentations. Advanced animation and Internet importing techniques will be utilized to create customized templates. Basic Photoshop (CS6) techniques will be introduced and included in projects. As time permits, the Prezi platform will be explored as an alternative to traditional slide presentations. Moderate keyboarding skills highly recommended. n Instructor: Susan Jackson
Intro to Spreadsheet Design

When possible, students will use their own TI calculators to assist their understanding of their spreadsheet designs. n Instructor: Susan Jackson

approval n 1 Trimester of Upper School Technology credit n Parents/teachers are welcome in this class. In addition to the static languages of the web (XHTML, CSS), there are other languages that let your web page actually do something beyond display information. JavaScript, and HTML5 allow a user to add some “zing” to a web page by providing graphics that can be manipulated with user commands. The exciting possibility allows a platform for game development! See how this is done and get a taste of what computer programming is all about. We will use Dreamweaver CS6 and other platforms to get our web pages to do tricks and rudimentary games. n Instructor: Kent Pendleton
Intermediate Web Page Programming – PHP, MySQL and Dynamic Database-Driven Websites (Honors) n Section 1: July 6–10, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. n Entering grades: 9–12 (younger students by special permission) n Fee: $410 (includes the price of a textbook) n Prerequisites: Algebra 1, reasonable proficiency with Photoshop and
The following classes are also offered for credit but are more advanced than the preceding classes:
Dreamweaver CSx, Intro to Web Page Design and Introduction to Web Page Programming with JavaScript and/or department head approval n 1 Trimester of Upper School Technology credit n Parents/teachers are welcome in this class. Once you can create a webpage, make it look ‘nice’ with Photoshop and CSS and get it to do some tricks with JavaScript, the next step is giving it the ability to store and retrieve information from an online database. Once you can do this, the design (and consulting!) possibilities are unlimited! PHP and MySQL are technologies that allow you to manipulate, store, retrieve and process data that can dynamically change the fabric of a webpage and allow a user to experience all the features of a modern web experience. Many current TCA students have used this knowledge to begin real-life consulting careers in high school. Join us in this valuable class! n Instructor: Kent Pendleton
Intro to Business Graphic Design (Honors) n Section 1: June 8–12, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. n Section 2: July 13–17, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. n Entering grades: 8–12 n Fee: $410 (includes cost of a textbook) n Prerequisites: none n 1 Trimester of Upper School Technology credit n Parents/teachers are welcome in this class.
The ability to manipulate, design, store and create images is central to effective electronic and written communication. Participants will learn how to use Photoshop CS6 as a tool to create and manipulate images for placement in documents, media presentations, web pages and mobile apps. No prior experience with Photoshop is required. This course would be ideal for students interested in yearbook. n Instructor: Kent Pendleton
Intro to Web Page Design (Honors)
n Section 1: June 15–19, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. n Entering grades: 8–12 n Fee: $410 (includes cost of a textbook) n Prerequisites: Either Introduction to Business Graphic Design, Digital Art,
Yearbook or Introduction to Multimedia or proof of proficiency with Photoshop and/or department head approval n 1 Trimester of Upper School Technology credit n Parents/teachers are welcome in this class. The languages of the web: HTML5 and CSS3 will be explored as we write web pages “from scratch” and utilize web-authoring software (Dreamweaver CS6) to expedite design. Images will be crafted to make web pages appear seamless, and students will learn principles to make their web pages stand out as professional and polished. n Instructor: Kent Pendleton
The following classes are offered for fun and enrichment. No credit is awarded.
iPhone/iPad App Programming Boot Camp
n Section 1: July 20–24, 9 a.m.–1 p.m. n Entering grades: 9–12 n Fee: $410 (includes the price of a textbook) n Prerequisites: Algebra 1, iPhone/iPad user (knowledge of the Mac comes
in handy) n Parents/teachers are welcome in this class. Want to see if iPhone/iPad app development is for you? This course is designed for students who like technology (iPhones/iPads!) but who have not yet had any programming experience. We will orient you to the Xcode interface (the platform for making apps) and the iOS8 environment, as well as teach you the fundamentals of Objective-C and Swift: the computer languages behind the iOS devices. You need to love math and technology and possess good typing skills. Successful completion of this boot camp may give you a chance to try your hand at TCA’s full-year credit course: Honors Mobile Computer Programming without taking the normal prerequisite classes. n Instructor: Kent Pendleton
Introduction to Programming with Python n Section 1: July 27– 31, 9 a.m.–1 p.m. n Entering grades 9–12 n Fee: $410 (Includes the price of a textbook) n Prerequisites: None n Parents/teachers are welcome in this class.

Either way, learn the basics of this popular and powerful programming language, which is used heavily in both academic and professional circles. n Instructor: Kent Pendleton
ATHLETIC DEVELOPMENT Champions Camp – Prepare for Battle No other program will prepare your athlete for his or her future in sports at TCA or outside of school better than the summer program at TCA with Team DX3. Summer Athletic Development Training gives athletes the best opportunity to learn, develop and master safe, technically sound training practices. Athletes will make tremendous improvements in athleticism while gaining confidence in a fun, safe environment with peers. They will be better prepared for their sports and learn principles that will serve them well long after the summer. Be confident, be fast, be strong…be a DX3 Athlete!
