Welcome to Virtual Summer@TCA! We are excited to bring you TCA’s first-ever, all-virtual summer classes taught by exceptional TCA teachers! Several staff members will deliver academic instruction through distancelearning techniques honed at the conclusion of the 2019-20 school year. You can expect your child to receive top-notch instruction through the use of live Zoom conferences with teachers and peers, pre-recorded video/audio lessons, various other online platforms and/or even some individual check-ins with lead instructors. Please be advised that your child must have a device at home (computer or tablet) with a reliable Wi-Fi connection in order to participate in these summer classes. Please do not schedule vacation time during the courses for which you are registering (especially those Upper School classes for which students hope to attain school-year credit). Teachers will expect (and review) proper online class etiquette. Finally, expect there to be time built into each camp day for your child to work on his/her own. Since all classes have a connection to the academic curriculum, teachers may choose to assign published “class time” or time outside the published course hours for the completion of daily assignments. Take some time to look through the list of classes and descriptions in the Virtual Summer@ TCA Catalog to see what’s available for your child during the summer of 2020. Registration for summer sessions can be accessed online through Active Network on the Summer@TCA Resource Board. Online registration will begin on Friday, May 8. We look forward to a productive and fun summer of 2020! Blessings,

Steve Mercer

• Open enrollment to any TCA student entering grades 3–12 in Fall 2020 as listed in the camp guide. • Camps are filled on a first-come, first-served basis, and all offerings have a limited number of spaces available. • All registrations are processed online through Active Network and can be accessed through the TCA website. • The full camp fee is due upon registration.

Refunds, Cancellations and Confirmations

• Refunds requested in writing at least two weeks prior to a camp will be honored, less a $50 administrative fee. No refunds are available two weeks or less from the start date of a camp. • TCA reserves the right to cancel any program for which there is not sufficient enrollment. Since low enrollment may cause camp cancellations, help us prevent this and spread the word about your favorite camps! • Campers’ first choices will be honored, if possible. Full refunds will be given if a camp is cancelled due to low enrollment, and no alternative camp is chosen. • You should assume that your registration is confirmed, unless we contact you prior to the start date. We will contact all registrants whose schedules need adjustments (if a camp is under-enrolled or if your child has been wait-listed) two weeks prior to the start date of the scheduled camp session to arrange the necessary changes.

Dress Code

• The dress code at Summer@TCA is casual but should not cause a distraction. No offensive or foul language is allowed on any items. Staff at Summer@TCA reserves the right to dismiss any camper for inappropriate dress.

Discipline and Misconduct of Camper

• Students participating in Summer@TCA are expected to exhibit appropriate behavior that will not interfere with the educational environment, nor detract from our religious purposes. All campers are expected to follow TCA’s Parent and Student Handbook and Technology Acceptable Use Policy. Copies of these documents are available upon request. • TCA staff reserves the right to dismiss any camper whose conduct, behavior or actions are inappropriate. • No refund will be provided to any camper who is removed from a class for disciplinary reasons.

It may be only 500 words, but the admissions essay portion of a college application can mean the difference between acceptance and rejection. How you write your personal essay shows the admissions committee why you are different from everyone else. The essay provides information about you that test scores, grades and extracurricular pursuits just cannot. Students are encouraged to bring in college application essay prompts from colleges of their choosing, and we will walk through each step of writing this essay— from gathering ideas, drafting the actual essay and editing and revising the final copy. We will be utilizing Zoom for instructional purposes, as well as Zoom’s Breakout Room feature for collaborating on gathering ideas and hosting small-group discussions. This class will also use Turnitin.com for its helpful “peer review” feature, which will allow students to edit and revise one another’s papers. Each day will begin and end with approximately 30 minutes of Zoom teaching. For the hour in between, students will apply the lesson to their writing and then come back at the end of class to share and receive feedback from the teacher and their peers through Zoom conferencing. The students will need to dedicate the full class time to working on course material and to be available for Zoom conferencing. Teachers will thoroughly read students’ polished drafts and respond with helpful commentary and suggestions. Come and see first-hand what makes an essay of this type successful! We will release application essays from various colleges as models of successful and unsuccessful applications. Join this workshop and learn how to effectively and persuasively make your application essay stand out from the crowd! Enrollment is limited to 16 students per section. Instructor: Fran Legband or Diane Walton

Writing for Incoming Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors

Section 1: July 13–17, 9–11 a.m. Entering grade: 10–12 Fee: $120 TCA is well-known for its exceptional writing program. Our students consistently report that the skills learned at TCA have given them an edge at the university level. Students at TCA begin to develop these skills during their Middle School years. While the freshman teachers ensure student writing success at the high school level, we have found that students entering TCA after the freshman year may not get sufficient experience to develop their skills equivalent with their TCA peers. The TCA History/English Department is offering a virtual summer writing course to introduce entering students to the writing concepts used at TCA and give students occasion to write. We will use the Zoom platform for instructional purposes, as well as Zoom’s Breakout Room feature and Google Docs for small group activities monitored by the instructor. Each day will begin with approximately 60 minutes of Zoom teaching and smaller breakout groups. The students will then have 30 minutes to apply the lessons they have learned in their own writing before coming back for the remaining 30 minutes of class to share and receive feedback through Zoom conferencing. It is important that students are available for the full class time to working on course material and to be available for Zoom conferencing. Students will get daily teacher feedback on their progress as well as an opportunity for individual feedback on a written paragraph. Come find learn some of the keys to successful writing. Enrollment is limited to 16 students. We highly recommend that all new incoming sophomores, juniors and seniors take advantage of this opportunity. Instructor: Kim Morton
