words from the lead pastor

A HOM E BUILT ON FAITH

I

n the first panel of Trinity@Paya Lebar’s Heritage Walk is a replica of our first bulletin published in 1970. In it are the opening words of our founders who desired for Trinity to be a “power-house for our Lord Jesus Christ.” As they faithfully gathered the faithful in their bungalow home, never could they have imagined that their congregation of 10 would eventually grow into a church of 7,800. Friends, God’s big plans for Trinity didn’t start with the Decade of Expansion. Rather, God’s plans and purposes for us have been in His heart from the very beginning. We have been faithful with little. Now, we must be faithful with much.

When we stop, we stagnate. When we get comfortable, we become consumeristic Christians. When we slow down, we stop being a power-house for God. We cannot be content with what we have. We must continue to hunger for the things of God – for salvation, for disciples, and for revival. With a vision to plant regional centers locally and overseas, as well as Bishop Dag’s challenge of one thousand churches, there’s still much more that God wants to do in and through Trinity. While we cannot imagine how this will happen, we remain faithful because we serve a big God with big plans and unlimited resources.

Today, God has enabled us to start new centers and acquire land. We have expanded service halls and started new service timings. Exciting things are happening wherever Trinity is planted – beacons of hope strategically established for maximum Kingdom impact (pg 18-45). Every regional center is seeing multitudes of first-time visitors and people making decisions for Christ. Our Connect Groups are also thriving as people become connected and discipled in these biblical communities (pg 12).

In this season of open doors and new seasons, we must dare to speak and move in faith, laying hold of all that God has for us. As we yield the key of David, breakthroughs will take place as we open doors and cross the threshold for the new things of God (pg 52).

In this fast-paced and fruitful year, it’s tempting to all that has happened as signs to slow down. It’s easy to believe that we’ve served enough, connected enough, and given enough. Friends, these are lies from the enemy. The kingdom of God is forcefully advancing, and we must be ready to advance with and for God.

With God, our house will be built on the strong foundations of faith. As we come to Vision Rally and Vision Weekend, let’s come ready to keep praying, keep seeding, and keep being a power-house for the Lord!

When God opens the door, we must be ready to go through. Where God’s spirit is, we must be ready to move. Where God leads, His provision is always there (Hebrews 3:4).

THE LAUNCH OF CONNECT GROUPS

A NEW SEASON OF CONNECTING AND DISCIPLING TRANSITIONING TO CONNECT GROUPS IS MORE THAN A NAME CHANGE. IT’S A WAY FOR EVERY TRINITARIAN TO GROW IN THEIR FAITH LIFE AND FULFILL THEIR GOD-GIVEN DESTINY! READ ON TO SEE HOW DIFFERENT ONES HAVE EXPERIENCED BREAKTHROUGH AND BLESSING THROUGH THE LAUNCH OF CONNECT GROUPS.

THE FIRST OF MANY GATHERINGS Refreshed and recalibrated to connect and disciple, Spiritual Parents and Connect Leaders eagerly hosted the first Connect Group Meeting on June 14. With many joining Connect Group for the first time, some gatherings were bursting at the seams!

H E AR WH AT O TH E R S SAY Robin Lau and Michelle Tan The launch of Connect Groups gave us a sense of revival. The increase of new members calls for us to be diligent in discipling people and raising them up for the Lord. This new structure inspires us to focus on building up leaders and making disciples for the coming revival. Tan Hwee Gek During Life Conference, my Section Leader asked me to lead a Connect Group temporarily. Although I felt inadequate and fearful of being in a new environment, I knew in my heart that I have to obey. I was initially overwhelmed by the large group size, but the vibrancy and friendliness of the members quelled my worries. Despite my busy work schedule, I was able to leave early every Friday so that I could be on time for Connect Group.

Before each Connect Group, I would ask the Holy Spirit for guidance. I wanted to be His mouthpiece and to know the godly truths He wants me to impart to the members. And He has never failed to anoint me with wisdom. I am glad that I took the step of faith to serve Him. By doing so, I’ve learned to lean on Him and not on my own strength. All glory to Him. Jedidah John When Connect Group started, I was able to fully appreciate God’s provision of this spiritual family and the value of connecting and discipling. I am truly blessed and thankful for this new season of intentional fellowship and growth. Jeremy Chee The start of Connect Group has been a time of growth and encouragement for me. I can see how God is

bringing us together as we gradually open up to each other. I feel that we are growing to be more united. It is also encouraging to have new people visit and stay – proof of the strong community we are building. The Connect Group leadership is also playing a great role in connecting with each of us and I am thankful for that. Of course, Connection Nights are a great time of food and fellowship too!

A PROPHETIC TRANSITION Just as Life Conference closed with the linking of carabineers, Connect Groups throughout the island signaled their transition with this powerful prophetic act on June 21.

"I believe when we move in obedience, God moves with us for His Glory." CLAR A FONG

Shawn Lim When we shared about the heart of the new Connect Group structure and did the prophetic act; I recall a thick presence of God enveloping us as we made that commitment and prayed together. Since then, I’m thankful for how He has moved in different ways – through open sharing, attending Spiritual Parenting classes, and bringing of new people into the group. It has been a blessing to partner with God in the Connect Group and I will continue to trust His direction and provision. Clara Fong The members have embraced the new Connect Group model. They understand the need for change and are aligned with what the church is doing. I praise the Lord that different ones are stepping up to lead and serve. One inactive Spiritual Parent became active,

and we commissioned three Spiritual Parents! We have also been active in inviting oikos for Connect Group on Fridays and to attend service. One member invited an oikos to Trinity@CBD because he was trying to bring this friend back to church. The oikos went for the service and returned the following week where he rededicated his life to Jesus! I believe when we move in obedience, God moves with us for His Glory. Jared Choo I thank God for those that are coming in to join the Connect Group. The oikos joined us are regularly coming. They are comfortable to ask questions, share about their struggles, and hang out with us. The members are also learning to be better hosts as they openly share and connect. I believe that our oikos will experience God’s love and will commit to making Trinity their home church!

DISCIPLESHIP NIGHT AND CONNECTION NIGHT Connecting and discipling can happen anywhere, especially in the fourth week! While Leaders and Spiritual Parents were out for Discipleship Night, members organized bonding activities for Connection Night. Some even invited oikos to join the fun!

"I have enjoyed and been refreshed by the Discipleship Nights, especially the one where Pastor Gerald spoke on leading with spiritual authority. God reminded me of my call in serving Him. In the call lies His spiritual authority on me that enables me to lead in His strength and not in mine. GERALDINE TAN

HE AR WHAT O T HE R S SAY Ben Chew There was one instance where a member was reaching out to an oikos because she was facing some problems. Some of the members also reached out to her during a Connection Night. She is now regular in church and Connect Group and went through water baptism in August! Darren Yow It’s very heartwarming and encouraging to see how different members took the initiative and leadership to organize Connection Nights for fellowship and makan. Being a family Connect Group, the kids also have tremendous fun playing with each other and strengthening friendships. We even help to look after the children of leaders who are attending Discipleship Night! This reflects to me a strong sense of trust and

community within Connect Group.

the

Lim Tze Yang We went through a merger at launch and I thank God it went well. The newcomers are settling in well and one of them is actively leading Gel and Glorify. Many enjoy the sermon discussions because it allows them to reflect on the past week’s sermon and how the key points can be applied in their lives. It is a refreshing change and the discussions have been lively, open, and edifying. Some have stepped up to organize activities like board games after dinner. They are good opportunities to connect in a more casual setting and to build relationships. Ada Cheng When I started attending Trinity@Orchard, there

were only two others from my Connect Group that went. I prayed for months that the other members will have a spiritual awakening and for God to bring in more people from SMU. By faith, I declared that there would be a doubling of my Connect Group. God heard me and answered every prayer! A few months ago, I saw the largest batch of firstyear students coming into SMU. At one service, I saw my Connect Group fill up more than two rows at Trinity@Orchard. When I counted, there were 23 of us! This entire season of seeing my Connect Group expand has really caused my faith to arise, to be bolder in my prayers and to declare God's hand upon my campus. We are going to multiply into two Connect Groups soon! Testimonies have been edited for clarity and length.

TRINITY@CBD

A SPIRITUAL OASIS IN THE CITY

BY IM E L D A L I E

God, Your heart, Your desire, Your will is for us to bear much fruit; not just fruit but much fruit.

“WOULD YOU LIKE TO JOIN US FOR A WEEKDAY CHURCH SERVICE?

Because the abundant life is characterized by much fruit, so we declare into the birth at Trinity@CBD. We declare that at the birth of that center, we will see men and women come to know Jesus. It will be a place where many will encounter You, many will be discipled, and many will be deployed.

A

week before the launch of Trinity@CBD, a Connect Group member and I tracted at CBD during our lunch break. While there were some polite declines, many invitations were met with outright rejections. People were walking like they had no time to stop.

We thank You Father that the kingdom of God is ever increasing and is always on the move. Where You move, we want to move as well. Lord, do that special work in our hearts. Touch every man and woman I pray and thank You for fruitfulness that has come into our lives.

In the blazing hot sun, we quickly changed our strategies, condensing our opening line to capture their attention in a few seconds. We persevered and prayed over every tract, believing that they would lead to salvation. Whenever we met someone who was intrigued and took a flyer, we were reminded that this indeed was our harvest field.

We praise you in Jesus' name.

On the night of July 18, the entire pastoral team and many Trinitarians came early to PARKROYAL on Pickering for the pre-launch reception, eager to do their part in this Decade of Expansion. As soon as the door opened for the inaugural service, the ballroom was filled and more seats had

to be added to accommodate the multitudes. With praise and worship filing the hall, it was refreshing to wind down with God’s presence rather than the happy hours that are so prevalent in this part of Singapore. Delivering the first message was Pastor Gerald Tan, who reminded us of the pitfalls of busyness, especially amid long and tiring days at work. “Sometimes we get caught up in the culture of work where it’s about trying to meet the deadline, win that project, and just trying to go further. But I believe God is doing something in the CBD. There are many who need a place of worship. Not a worship of money or deals but a worship of God Almighty."

Sometimes we get caught up in the culture of work where it’s about trying to meet the deadline, win that project, and just trying to go further. But I believe God is doing something in the CBD.

Trinity@CBD is a lighthouse in this bustling area, a place of respite from the grind of daily life. But more than that, Trinity@CBD is bringing disruption for God’s kingdom in the marketplace. We are bringing the Gospel closer to our colleagues and the many lives who need God’s transforming power and presence.

– Pastor Gerald Tan

We thank God for the 48 first-time visitors who joined the inaugural service and for the many that continue to come for every service. We are in the CBD not merely to earn money and make a living for ourselves. We are called to let God work through us in our workplace. The kingdom of God is ever-increasing and always on the move. You and I must be sensitive to the Spirit’s leading and dare to go where the Spirit goes. Trinitarians, it’s time to rule, to transform, and to be strong in the Lord!

TRINITY@ORCHARD

SHINING BRIGHT IN THE HEART OF THE CITY

In 2012 when I was still a polytechnic student, my family and I embarked on a period of praying and fasting. During one of those days, I was led by the Holy Spirit to do a prayer walk inside Orchard Cineleisure. As I prayed and dedicated the building to God, I told the Lord my desire to see this building become a place where youths and young adults could fellowship, encounter Jesus, and grow spiritually in Christ. I believed that my heart’s desire would one day become a reality.

GOD HAS BEEN DOING A NEW THING IN THE HEART OF THE CITY! HEAR FROM TRINITARIANS ON HOW TRINITY@ORCHARD CONTINUES TO BE A PLACE OF BREAKTHROUGH FAITH AND SPIRITUAL GROWTH.

Imagine my surprise when Pastor Dominic announced the launch of Trinity@Orchard! God remembered, and that moment strengthened my faith. Our simple obedience to the Holy Spirit and our intercession can bring to fruition the plans of Jesus. Indeed my prayer to Him did not return void. All glory to God! Alice Tan

Once, there was a sermon on Mark 10:17-22 about the rich young ruler. The part that spoke to me was verse 21 where, “Jesus looked at him and loved him” before asking him to sell all he had. I learned that whenever Jesus calls me to surrender something, it's because He loves me and desires to give me more of Himself. Since then, I've been surrendering more of myself to be spent for His glory. Nathanael Leng

I wondered if I was good enough for God. The more I wanted to obey, the more overwhelmed I became. At one altar call, I surrendered it all to God. “All I ask is that you give me a heart to obey you, to be meek before you, to be able to be all that you want me to be.” God answered my prayer and has given me a heart that is sensitive to His leading. I felt His tug to lead the Connect Group in 14 days of prayer at one unified time – 10:10. As we obeyed, I felt a shift in the atmosphere of our group. I believe that there are even greater things that God will want

A month before Trinity@Orchard launched, my Connect Group was asked to commit to this new service. My answer was an immediate “Yes” because I trusted that wherever God planted us, it would be within His plan and purpose. But this time, I found myself struggling with perceived inadequacies.

Good things must be shared. As Trinitarians braved the crowds to tract along Orchard Road, hearts were determined to lead people to encounter God and experience transformation. On June 23, we tracted along Orchard Road after service. I was feeling tired after a long week of work and initially had the mindset to “get it over and done with.” Before we started, I prayed for the right mindset to reach out to people and bring them to Christ. “God, just give me one salvation,” I prayed. I did not think much of it and even told my friend as a half-joke. Yet, I thought to myself that anything is possible with God! How good it would be to see salvation today!

When we serve God’s house, we make church a home.

Lydia Lau

True enough, Lydia and I met a 19-year-old boy who was intrigued by our flyers. A free thinker all his life, he asked many questions about Christianity. When Lydia shared the bridge diagram, he accepted Christ!

When we serve God’s house, we make church a home. We thank God for the many who are rising up to honor God and bless others through our weekend Ministry Expressions.

We invited him to join us at Trinity@Orchard the next week. During service, he listened intently to the message and was really excited to talk to us during lunch. We accompanied him to Trinity@Paya Lebar, connecting him with Pastor Gary and IGNYTE. I was glad to see that he was comfortable, eager to connect with them, and is regularly attending service and Connect Group there. Jason Ong

We have been so blessed by all who have been serving week after week – and the numbers are growing! From Celebration Hosts to the worship team to the Leaders, they have been so inspiring as they serve the Lord. Seeing these friendly faces makes Trinity@Orchard such a comfortable and united place. It is truly a joy to see God work through unity. Low Sze Ting Testimonies have been edited for clarity and length.

THE LAUNCH OF TRINITY@ORCHARD’S FILIPINO SERVICE

MOVING IN STEP WITH THE CALL TO EXPANSION, THE FILIPINO MINISTRY MULTIPLIED WITH THE LAUNCH OF A NEW SERVICE AT TRINITY@ORCHARD ON JULY 28.

P

reparation for the launch started early this year with a season of fasting and praying. During prayer walks, many were moved to tears as they sensed the need and urgency for salvation. Spurred with a desire for souls, the Filipino Ministry went into the harvest field of Orchard Road to tract. Many who participated were domestic helpers who sacrificed their precious off days to reach out to their kababayan (fellow countrymen). On the big day, Celebration Hosts eagerly directed Trinitarians and their oikos to the service. The atmosphere was upbeat and welcoming as different ones arrived and greeted one another. A whopping 167 people (including 37 first-time visitors) almost filled the entire hall!

During a time of post-service interaction, many FTVs shared that they came because they received the flyer during tracting. Indeed, nothing we do for God is in vain – a testament of God’s hand at work when we obey His call in this Decade of Expansion! I am very happy that all of my oikos attended the service. TRINITY IN THE WEST

GROWING BIGGER, SHINING BRIGHTER FROM EXPANDING TO A THIRD SERVICE TO ESTABLISHING A NEW HOME, EXCITING THINGS ARE HAPPENING FOR TRINITY IN THE WESTERN SIDE OF SINGAPORE.

TRINITY@BUKIT BATOK

It was an exciting weekend as we launched the first youth service.

Trinity@Bukit Batok has not stopped growing since its launch on July 2017. Attracting many Trinitarians and their oikos, this lighthouse has expanded to include a Chinese service and a children’s service. With attendance increasing across all services, Trinity@Bukit Batok embarked on a vanguard endeavor on August 18 – the start of three seamless, back-to-back, English services. Once the benediction is given, worship starts for the next service. It was an exciting weekend as we also launched the first youth service, The 12 IGNYTErs seeded from Trinity@Paya Lebar showed their passionate heartbeat for souls by connecting 16 to the first service. As a Ministry Expressions planner, I need to schedule the manpower for all the services at Trinity@Bukit Batok. I am very grateful and rejoicing that many Trinitarians have stepped up to serve. We have had more than 30 new signups and some have even messaged me to say that they will serve when needed. I can see the unity and how we are one body coming together to serve God’s house and His people. August 18 was is another breakthrough for us as we saw more people coming to serve at the back-to-back services. Many people attended church that day and were patient with the transitions. Adeline Lim

One day, my friends and I arrived at West Mall with time to spare. We decided to go for a quick breakfast and as we were looking for a seat, we noticed a woman sitting at a table. We asked if we could join her and started a conversation. Eventually, we told her that we were there for church. Something prompted me to invite her and she said she would think about it. I asked for permission to contact her and during that week, I asked her again if she would like to come. She said, “Yes!” The following Sunday, we accompanied her for the 9:00am service. Since then,

she has been coming regularly and has also expressed interest in joining a Connect Group. Living alone with no relatives in Singapore, God told her that we would become her family. Through this experience. I see how God desires to use us to bring people to His home. There are many who long for a family and fellowship. Truly, God has a heart for the lonely and the lost. Jacqueline Cheong

It was incredibly exciting to see different ones joining our very first service. As there were a number of youths attending Trinity@Bukit Batok, starting an IGNYTE service is a chance for us to grow together, serve God together, and worship God together. In this service, some joined for the very first time, and others availed their time to serve at both Trinity@Paya Lebar and Trinity@Bukit Batok. When we gathered, I felt a great sense of excitement and anticipation. As we continue to fan the flames of revival – persistent in evangelizing and fervent in intercession for our generation – I believe that many more will come and join us, and we will witness multiplication both spiritually and numerically! WHY EVERY CENTER NEEDS A HOME While vibrant atmosphere can be experienced anywhere and everywhere, rental places really limit the ways we can conduct service. We experience this during praise and worship when we work with a lessor’s equipment and in DiscoveryLand services where our children have less space to run around and do their activities.

hard so that Trinity@Adam is completed on time, within budget, and of good quality because we want this to be a place where many can encounter God and experience transformation.

Moreover, rental places give us fewer opportunities to linger. When we hold services in a movie hall, we tend to treat service as if we were going for a movie – rushing in and rushing out as soon as the message is over. The Trinitarian experience is more than just service. Church for me is about everything that happens before, during, and after. My fondest memories of Trinity@Adam included the times when I hung out with friends, had toast and kopi at the Meeting Place, and let my children run around in the playground while I caught up with other Trinitarians.

A TEAM EFFORT When I took over this portfolio from Danny Yeo, it was a very steep learning curve because my background is in technology. From budgeting to vendor management to governance, I had to learn the ins and outs of the building and construction in a very short time. I’m grateful for the many people who are part of the redevelopment team such as Pastor Steven Tay, Thomas Lee, Eleanore Koh, Philip Tay, Charles Soo, and Cindy Lim. Danny is still actively involved in the project, and I often consult him. His marketplace experience and history with Trinity’s building projects make his input invaluable for the Committee and me.

REDEVELOPMENT UPDATES With all of the foundation pilings and the first level of concrete in place, the main contractor is now simultaneously digging downwards and building upwards. The Basement 1 excavation is now in full swing while Level 1 concrete floor is being constructed. The second level is expected to start by September! We’ve also been very busy with other parts of the project like confirming the audio-visual equipment, finalizing the landscaping, and selecting various fixtures. Recently, our pastors also tested and gave feedback on the chairs for the new Sanctuary.

children to Nursery and DiscoveryLand. When I see how my children’s faith has also been established at Trinity@Adam, it drives me to give people of all ages a place to grow and discover their God-given destiny.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN THE NEW TRINITY@ADAM One of the exciting things about the new Trinity@Adam is the way it will bring together our past, present, and future. Besides having more parking spaces, we’ll also have larger spaces for our children and youth – places where they will want to come back every weekend. The Meeting Place will also be expanded and made to be more conducive for lingering.

Obstacles during the redevelopment process are inevitable, but what keeps me going is a desire to give others the experience that I have had for so many years.

For the Sanctuary, we wanted to infuse as much vibrancy as possible, like the addition of new lighting elements for the stage.

Trinity@Adam was the place where I grew from a young man to a father of three. I was saved at 19 and was part of events like Heaven’s Gates & Hell’s Flames and Weekend Live. My wife and I got married in the Auditorium and we have sent all our

THESE ARE SOME TESTIMONIES OF THOSE WHO HAVE FOUND A HOME AT TRINITY@BANGKOK.

Bee Vongphanich First Launch of Trinity@Bangkok I attended service in Trinity Singapore for a year and was glad to come for Trinity@Bangkok’s launch in October. This place has taught me to trust in God in all circumstances. In June 2019, I decided to go through water baptism. This was a totally new experience for me, and I believe that God will continue to be with my family and me. I want to grow together with Trinity@Bangkok, and will do my part to expand our community. I am helping with audio and translation. As I draw closer to God and learn His Word, I believe that this will help me share about Him to more people.

Peng Phongsatorn Young Adults Care and Connect events Last year, my father had an accident and I needed to quit my job to take care of him and our family business. When he was better, I decided to go back into the marketplace. Despite making it to the final round of interviews, I kept getting rejected. I felt really hopeless and stressed. One day, I reached my limit. “God, please help me,” I prayed, “I did my best and I don’t know how to make it better.” Three days later, some Campus students approached me and started talking to me about Jesus. They also invited me to join a seminar about finding our talent. At that moment, I did not hesitate to accept. Then, I started coming to Trinity and accepted Jesus into my life. Today, I am continuing to grow in my relationship with God.

Trinity@Bangkok Working in Bangkok was a tough decision for my family and me. Other than work, I was on my own. When my wife told me that Trinity@Bangkok was launching, I decided to attend the first service. Being a small congregation of locals and farlangs (foreigners), we soon got to know each other. We checked on each other in and out of church. Our esprit de corps and camaraderie grew. Trinity@Bangkok has become our home. We can be ourselves. We can remove our masks and be transparent, knowing that we are accepted as who we are. It’s a family who demonstrates unconditional love and care. With our new place at Chamchuri Square, we have a safe haven, a “city” for the needy, and a launch pad for the work of the Kingdom.

HOW DO I MAKE A VISION FAITH PROMISE?

A Faith Promise is based on the figure God has impressed upon your heart and with continued faith to believe that He will provide the amount in the year.

• Come to Vision Weekend! Collect a Faith Promise Card from one of our Celebration Hosts. When instructed, complete the Faith Promise Card and return the upper portion to our Celebration Hosts.

• A time to ask the Lord how much He wants you to give towards a specific area of His Kingdom-work (e.g. Trinity’s Vision) • An opportunity for God to provide to others through you. A Faith Promise is not based on the finances you already have.

Every fulfilled Vision Faith Promise goes into Trinity’s Building Fund, a restricted fund “established to finance the acquisition, redevelopment, retrofitting, additions and alterations, renovation, improvement, and repair and maintenance of buildings, properties, plant and equipment, furnishings, fittings and fixtures required for the purposes of the Church.”

DOORS TO

A NEW SEASON BY LE AD PAS T O R D O MI N I C YE O

EVER WONDER WHY WE DON’T STEP INTO THE NEW THINGS OF GOD? SOME OF US REMAIN TRAPPED IN THE SAME STRUGGLES, IN THE SAME SIN, IN THE SAME OLD SPOT. WE WANT TO BREAK THROUGH, BUT THERE SEEMS TO BE A BARRIER THAT PREVENTS US FROM MOVING FORWARD.

What He opens no one can shut, and what He shuts no one can open. 8 I know your deeds. See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept My word and have not denied My name.

When we hear of others testify of breakthroughs, we can often wonder to ourselves what it takes for us to cross the threshold. What does it take to experience God’s open door in our lives? Let’s look at Revelations 3:7-8.

First, we need to know that God has given His church, His people, the “key of David” – a representation of the authority and power we have as children of God. With the key of David, shut doors can and will be opened!

To the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: These are the words of Him who is holy and true, who holds the key of David.

WHAT DO THE CLOSED DOORS REPRESENT? Closed doors represent a few things in our lives – 1. Barriers that stop us from accessing all that God has for us 2. Limitations or caps that keep us from moving forward 3. Hindrances that prevent us from all that God has for us and all that He wants us to be Circumstances or mistakes may cause these doors to be closed and locked. Stupid actions such as sin and disobedience prevent us from accessing all that God has for us.

When we dare to open this door in and by the Spirit, these supernatural actions are the trigger to unleash and unlock the blessings of God in our lives. Revelations 4:1 tells us this: After this I looked, and there before me was a door standing open in heaven. And the voice I had first heard speaking to me like a trumpet said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.”

But you don’t need to stay behind a closed door. God has given you the key of David to open these closed doors!

WHAT ARE GOD’S OPEN DOORS? Open doors represent a point of transition – a time where we move from the old season into the new. It’s where we experience breakthrough, breaking every cap and limitation over our lives.

As soon as you walk through the open doors, the natural progression is that miracles, signs, and wonders follow.

Open doors also represent access to new things where God takes our faith life to the next level, moving us from barrenness to fruitfulness.

As you walk through these doors, you bear witness to the fullness, power, and splendor of our Lord.

ISSUE 3

2019

HOW DO WE ACCESS THE DOORS? Closed doors require us to do something to open them. Since there are different kinds of doors, I want to illustrate the different ways we can open them.

DOOR #1: DOORS WITH A HANDLE OPENING THE DOOR BY FORCE Doors with a handle are the most common kind of door. These doors simply require us to take hold of the handle, exert some force, and push it open.

Matthew 11:12 tells us that “forceful men lay hold of it.” There are promises that God has made to you, prophecies that have been spoken over your life that have yet to be fulfilled. For them to come to pass, you and I must dare lay hold of all that God has for us – to open the doors by exerting force.

ISSUE 3

055

The force required to open this door is not generated in the natural. We cannot muscle our way through because that will lead to striving. Instead, we must rely on a supernatural force – a force generated by the insight and leading of the Holy Spirit. What does it mean to open the door by force? It means we need to do something about that closed door. It means persevering in the way of the Lord until breakthrough takes place. When Trinity wanted to open a regional center in the western part of Singapore, we encountered several closed doors. Though it was frustrating, we continued to hold on to God’s vision for us and explored other venues and options. We would not take “no room” for an answer! Today, Trinity@Bukit Batok has become a spiritual home for many. More than that, God has also provided land for us to build a new regional center in the west – Trinity@Choa Chu Kang. When we dare to open this door in and by the Spirit, these supernatural actions are the trigger to unleash and unlock the blessings of God in our lives. OPENING THE DOOR BY FAITH While some of these doors require us to exert force, some doors require us to exert faith.

2019

envision

Faith activates the hand of God. In Hebrews 11:6, we read that, “without faith, it is impossible to please God.” If we have faith, we will please God. And when we please God, He will open the doors for us.

Don’t let a closed door shut down your faith. Don’t allow the enemy to tell you it’s a dead end. Instead, allow faith to well up from within so that you can declare His promises and receive your breakthrough!

DOOR #2: DOORS WITH A CODE

Matthew 21:21-22 also shows us what faith can do: …truly I tell you, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, “Go, throw yourself into the sea,“ and it will be done. 22 If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.

21

Faith is the currency of heaven needed for supernatural transactions to take place in our lives. We need to stir up faith for God to change our barriers to breakthrough, our disease to deliverance, our poverty to prosperity, our mess into His message, and our pain for His purpose. We hear countless testimonies of Connect Groups that pray together for sick loved ones, where collective faith resulted in God’s miraculous healing. We are not talking about blind faith, but a faith that knows what God can do and chooses to believe rather than give up and be despondent. Is there a situation that requires you to arise in faith and believe that God can turn your mess into His message?

ISSUE 3

Some doors can only be unlocked by punching in the right code. What are some of the “codes” that God has given to us? Through Scripture, we discover three codes that unlock these doors for our lives. THE CODE OF PRAYER So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him… ACTS 12:5

Imprisoned and awaiting trial, Peter was in a dire situation (Acts 12:5-17). Guarded by sentries, sleeping between two guards and bound by chains, escape seemed impossible. Trial and torture looked inevitable. But something amazing took place that night. Suddenly, an angel woke Peter up. By breaking every chain, and unlocking every door, the angel led Peter past three sets of guards and out of the prison so that he could return to the people who were earnestly praying for him.

056

2019

envision

Faith is the currency of heaven needed for supernatural transactions to take place in our lives.

The church’s intersession paved the way for Peter’s miraculous escape. That is the power and promise of prayer. When we feel trapped by circumstances and choices, when we are incarcerated in the prisons of sin and vices that we cannot break out of, the only way is to step into the newness that God has for us is through prayer. We must learn to pray because prayer is heaven’s call-line. We need to engage with the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords because the code of Jeremiah 33:3 promises revelation and illumination: “Call to Me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.” Last year, I had the chance to speak to a couple attending Trinity for the first time. The husband asked if I could pray for his wife. She had been diagnosed with womb cancer and there was a possibility that she would need to undergo surgery and chemotherapy.

The moment you punch in the code of prayer, expect that God will open the door for you to experience new freedom and victory. This couple not only opened the door through prayer, but they also came with faith. They did not allow the doctor’s report to cap their miracle. Your doors don’t need to remain closed. You can begin to do something about your situation right now! Take a moment and tap in the code of prayer! THE CODE OF PRAISE 25 About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them.

Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everyone’s chains came loose. ACTS 16:25-26

26

The prayer was short and the words simple, but I earnestly engaged with God, the Great Physician. A few days later, the husband

contacted me with an update: the doctors could find no traces of the cancer cells in her body. His wife had been given the all-clear!

envision

The next code we learn of is the code of praise. Dragged from the marketplace to be stripped and beaten with rods, Paul and Silas had endured a world of pain before being thrown into prison. Instead of lamenting about their circumstances, the men spent their night praying and singing to God. While faith is the currency of heaven, praise is the language of heaven. I can imagine loud and joyful sounds coming from Paul and Silas, an offering of praise that reached the throne room of God. As God hears the beat, He starts to snap His finger and tap His foot. The snapping and tapping start shaking the ground where the men were. Suddenly, the prison doors open and the chains that kept them in place were loosened. Another supernatural release from prison! I recall a story of a Trinitarian who received news of her grandmother’s hospitalization while at Campus Camp. As worship started, she started to sing with great conviction. “You have turned my mourning into dancing… this is how we overcome.”

room recovering from the operation. What’s more, grandma went on to live many years after that! There is power in our praise because God inhabits the praises of His people (Psalm 22:3). Against the odds and every closed door, the language of praise ushers God’s holy habitation into our lives. It is with the presence of God where doors begin to open, provisions abound, healings begin, breakthroughs take place, and salvation is released. THE CODE OF SOWING Opening doors requires force, faith, and for us to do something. Sometimes we need the code of prayer. Sometimes, we need the code of praise. There might also be times when we need to punch in the code of sowing.

“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in My house. Test Me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much

Tears streamed down her cheeks as she praised God. Her heart was heavy because her beloved grandma was in the operating theatre with little hope of recovery. But she pressed on in praise, believing that praise is how we overcome. Right after that night’s service, she received an update: grandma was back in her hospital

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. GALATIANS 6:7-9

God invites us to sow and see that He will open the gates of heaven. As those doors of heaven begin to open, heaven’s blessings come forth.

9

Many times, the blessings of heaven remain in heaven because we hold back from sowing. We horde and save out of fear, psyching ourselves up by asking, “What if God doesn’t show up?” The moment we operate in the “what ifs,” we close the door with our lack of faith. Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.

Whoever sows to please their flesh,

from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.

059

When we sow, our obedience releases the law of open doors. From Galatians 6:7-9, we learn three things about the principle of sowing. 1. We cannot reap if we do not sow. If we do not plant, we cannot expect to have a harvest. And if we reap what we have not sown, we have taken what belongs to someone else. While God is faithful to keep His promises, you and I must also be willing to do our part to bring them to pass. 2. When we sow, we will reap. That’s a certainty of God! Nothing does not produce something. Similarly, something does not produce nothing. God ensures that our efforts will always have an outcome.

3. You will reap what you sow. Just as apple seeds produce apple trees, the seed that we sow produces corresponding fruit. To harvest peace, it starts by sowing peace. To harvest joy, it starts by being joyful in all circumstances. To see the fruit of biblical prosperity and blessing, it starts with the hard work of sowing spiritual disciplines in our everyday life.

when it senses the presence of God in and among us. When we carry the presence of God, doors will open for us. The ark of the Lord remained in the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite for three months, and the Lord blessed him and his entire household. 2 SAMUEL 6:11 The ark of the Lord represents God’s presence. Even though Obed-Edom wasn’t a Jew, God blessed Obed-Edom and his entire household because the ark resided in his house. This reveals to us four powerful principles.

Today, it’s time to put our hands to the plow and sow the things that we seek to reap. It’s time to sow life so that you can reap life!

DOOR #3: DOORS WITH A PROXIMITY SENSOR

Where the presence of God is, there is the manifestation of God. Where the presence of God is, there is the revelation of His fullness.

When I was a child, I loved playing with automatic doors. The moment I got close, the doors would open. When I stepped away, the doors would begin to close.

Where the presence of God is, there is overwhelming grace. Where the presence of God is, the blessing of God follows.

There was a proximity sensor on top of these doors that could detect presence. When someone got close enough it would activate. But these doors won’t open for everything. A cockroach that runs across the floor won’t trigger the doors. These sensors require a substantial presence before it opens.

Just like doors with proximity sensors, these doors open for the presence of the Lord. When we were going ahead to plant Trinity@Jakarta, it’s amazing how His presence enabled doors to open. We had a ready congregation of Trinitarians who had relocated to Jakarta. Facilities were made available to us free-of-charge. We also had a place for seminars and services and a house for our

pastors to reside. All of these doors made it possible for Trinity@Jakarta to take off within months. If we want the blessings of God, we must cultivate the presence of God within and around us. Let your life be a place where God loves to dwell. DOOR #4: DOORS WITH A TIMER The final door is a timed door. The only way we can walk through these doors is when they open at a specific period. At that time Jesus said, “I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because You have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. MATTHEW 11:25 The Greek word for “at that time” is kairos.

ISSUE 3

It’s about seizing the opportunity. The kairos moment in Matthew 11 referred to the time John the Baptist was imprisoned and about to be put to death. As Jesus revealed who He was to John the Baptist’s disciples, He took the opportunity to praise God the Father. While you and I carry on with chronos living (activities and events dictated by the normal and sequential running of time), there will be kairos moments – opportune times that God will give to us that need to step into. Another concept of time is eth time – an appointed time. In Esther 4:14, Mordecai said to Esther “And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?” Just as Queen Esther was appointed by God to save the Jewish people from certain death, God will also disrupt our lives with eth moments – times where you and I are appointed at a specific time for a specific purpose. God is opening more doors of opportunity for us, more kairos and eth moments, because He wants to use each of us mightily for Kingdom

expansion. As doors with timers, these doors will not stay open forever. Whether it’s kairos (where we have to step in quickly to seize the opportunity), or whether it’s eth (where the doors are opened for an appointed time), once these doors close, the opportunity is over and the doors may never open again.

God has given you the keys to the doors of life, doors that take us to new seasons and new breakthroughs.

Friends, the opportune and appointed times are already here! Therefore, we must make sure that our faith life is strong enough to sense where they are. Our spiritual eyes must be sharp to spot these moments, and our hearts and minds must be ready to cross the threshold.

STEPPING OUT AND STEPPING THROUGH God has given you the keys to the doors of life, doors that take us to new seasons and new breakthroughs. Don’t hold back or delay crossing over for another day. Now is the time to seize all that God has for us! God has given His church the key of David to open doors. Whether we need to open by force, with faith, with a code, with His presence, or by recognizing and seizing the opportune and appointed time, it’s time to open doors.

REAL LIFE MIRACLES

SHAKEN BY ILLNESS, STRENGTHENED BY GOD BY LO H D A N L I N

THE LIMS WERE AN ORDINARY FAMILY LIVING AN ORDINARY LIFE. DAD (ABEL) AND MOM (NOREEN) HAD STEADY CAREERS, WHILE DAUGHTERS FELICIA AND FAITH WERE STUDYING IN UNIVERSITY AND SECONDARY SCHOOL, RESPECTIVELY. WHEN A SERIES OF HEALTH CRISES THREATENED TO ROB THE FAMILY OF THEIR PEACE AND PLANS, GOD’S CONTINUED PRESENCE ASSURED THEM THAT HE WAS IN CONTROL OF THEIR LIVES.

TIME’S UP It was 5:00 am on April 2, 2017 when life in the Lim household turned upside-down. Felicia was in the toilet when she suddenly could not move her left arm. “I panicked and rushed to my parents’ bedroom to wake my dad up,” she recalled. “Abel rushed to help her. Everything was in a frenzy,” Noreen shares, “I was in shock and didn’t know what was happening. Yet, deep down in my heart, I knew I had to pray. I broke down and cried for God to heal Felicia. I decided to go to church and pray together with the family of believers. I also messaged my Connect Group to pray for Felicia.”

ISSUE 3

Abel took Felicia to Changi General Hospital’s A&E, where doctors discovered a brain hemorrhage in Felicia’s brain. After a series of tests, she was diagnosed with arteriovenous malformation (AVM) – an abnormal tangle of vessels that disrupts blood flow and oxygen circulation.1 A condition she had from birth and unknown to the Lims until then (there were no prior symptoms), the hemorrhage was inevitable. Felicia was transferred to Tan Tock Seng Hospital where she was monitored for the next few days while waiting to undergo an operation scheduled in a week. 1 https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/arteriovenous-malformation/ symptoms-causes/syc-20350544

However, on midnight of the fifth day, she experienced another hemorrhage which affected the mobility of her left leg. She was rushed to the operating theater for an emergency operation. Abel and Noreen got their Connect Group members to pray for Felicia during this critical time. As one member was praying, she saw a vision of an angel in the operating theater and knew that Felicia would be alright. That vision brought comfort to the Lims as they recalled Philippians 4:6-7 – Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God which transcends all understanding will guard your hearts

and minds in Christ Jesus. After what seemed like an eternity, the six-hour operation was finally done. Felicia had to remain in the operating theater for another four hours for observation. While things had gone smoothly and Felicia was recovering in the intensive-care unit (ICU), the neurosurgeon did not know when she would wake up, or if she could recognize anyone when she did.

ISSUE 3

The ward was extremely quiet, except for the beeping sounds from the devices attached to Felicia. Despite the silence, our hearts were far from still. It had been an extremely trying time for the family. We were all physically, mentally, and emotionally exhausted. We desperately needed God’s calm in the storm in our hearts.

A surprise birthday treat for mom by close Trinitarian friends

All of a sudden, Abel and I heard music in the room. It was peaceful, crystal clear, and melodious – like a choir of angels surrounding us. We were shocked and amazed. Though we did not recognize the song, we knew that God was comforting us through the music.

God was reassuring me that He is my Potter and He will mold me and use me according to His purposes.

the music stopped. Unknown to her parents, Felicia had also heard the angelic music. Conscious but unable to speak due to the tube in her throat, Felicia recalls the divine encounter. The music was like angels singing and out-of-this-world. I had never heard anything like that before, but I immediately recognized the tune that the choir of angels was singing – it was the chorus of The Potter’s Hand. Take me, mold me, use me, fill me. I give my life to the Potter’s hand. Call me, guide me, lead me, walk beside me. I give my life to the Potter’s hand.

ISSUE 3

ON THE ROAD TO RECOVERY While the biggest danger was over, the road to recovery was long. When Felicia was stable, she was transferred to a rehabilitation hospital to undergo intensive rehabilitation therapy. This required her to put her university studies on hold so that she could focus on recovery. Abel also resigned from his job so that he could care for Felicia on a full-time basis. Felicia was making great progress in therapy. In three months, she progressed from being bedbound to being able to sit in a wheelchair, and after that to walking with the aid of a quad stick. The next stage of her recovery was to undergo cranioplasty

surgery in November 2017 to replace a part of her skull bone that was removed during the emergency surgery.

ILLNESS STRIKES AGAIN One week before Felicia’s cranioplasty surgery, the Lims experienced another medical emergency. This time, it was Abel’s turn. That day, I felt a sudden tightening around my chest. It was a pain I had never felt before. I didn’t know what was happening, but I knew something was not right. I decided to walk to Changi General Hospital since it was near our home. It was the most excruciating 15 minutes of my life. When I reached the hospital, I was diagnosed with a heart attack. The doctor told me I needed to be hospitalized for stenting procedures to unblock my arteries. I was shocked by the news. How could it be? I thought. I had no pre-existing health conditions and no family history of heart problems. Why me and why now? Before Abel’s heart stenting procedure, the Connect Group and others from the family of Christ went to the hospital to encourage and pray for him. Their Connect Group Leader shared that he saw two angels standing beside Abel’s bed as he prayed.

ISSUE 3

067

We would not have been able to go through these challenging times without the support of the community of believers. They were like the hands and feet of God doing His work. The next day when a pastor visited Abel and prayed for him, he could no longer contain his emotions. In a flood of tears, he released the heavy burden that he had been carrying for the past few months to God. He would no longer ask “why me” and “why us.” Instead, he decided to trust that God will make all things beautiful in His time. While Abel was undergoing heart stenting, another Trinitarian saw a vision of God watching over Abel in the operating theater. Noreen was assured that God would take care of her husband. By God’s grace, both father and daughter had smooth operations and quick recovery from their respective surgeries. Abel recovered steadily, and Felicia did

not feel the side effects usually associated with a major operation – she could sleep peacefully through the night. God made it possible for them to have the best environment for recovery. Felicia’s placement in the rehabilitation hospital ensured that she could continue with therapy while Abel recovered at home.

LOVE WRAPPED IN SKIN Besides prayers and words of encouragement, the Connect Group and other Trinitarian friends rallied around the family with many acts of service.

Our spiritual family supporting us

While Noreen had to be in the hospital with Abel, different ones took turns to take care of Felicia, bring food, and drive them around. During semester breaks, Felicia’s friends from Campus and IGNYTE would visit to encourage her and keep her company. God did a deep work in every member of the Lim family, including the youngest. Though the challenges were tough, Faith persevered through the support and encouragement of her leaders. I was distraught when I first found out about my sister’s condition, and the challenges kept coming one after another. I tried to do what I could at home, but I still felt quite helpless. STANDING TALL After more than a year of tough therapy, Felicia’s mobility improved to the point where she was able to walk outside with just her elbow crutch. She was also able to return to school in August 2018. Although coming back was daunting at first, God placed people around Felicia to help her transit back to school smoothly. Twenty-seven months after losing mobility of her left arm, Felicia walked independently on the NTU graduation stage to receive her degree in July 2019.

Coming together for a worship jam session

A JOURNEY OF FAITH Looking back, Noreen believes that God has been preparing her for this experience since she rededicated her life to Jesus 16 years ago. I visited a Christmas party hosted by a Trinitarian carecell in 2002, at the invitation of my brother. Although I believe in God, I did not attend church. After rededicating my life to Jesus at the Christmas party, I started attending Trinity’s Celebration Services and brought Felicia to DiscoveryLand. She was eight years old then and soon accepted Jesus into her heart.

God sent me multiple assurances that He was with me.

Things were not all smooth sailing after I rededicated my life to Christ. However, God sent me multiple assurances that He was with me. One day while reading a children’s bible to Felicia, the words “Do not be afraid“ popped out. A few days later, Felicia told me that she had dreamed of a tame lion sitting on our sofa.

While I was wondering about the meaning of the dream, Felicia said, “There was a lion, but we were not afraid!“ A pastor later told us that the lion in Felicia’s dream is the Lion of Judah, which is Jesus Himself. Through Felicia's dream, I knew that God is with my family. Noreen continues to remember that moment and holds on to it as a promise from God. Noreen and Abel also shared how the past two years had dramatically changed their lives and perspectives. The challenging times made us realize that we need to depend on God more than anything. Through challenging times, we learned to trust God and look to Him for strength because only He is reliable.

Through challenging times, we learned to trust God and look to Him for strength because only He is reliable.

When we felt overwhelmed, we clung on to Psalm 116:1-2, “I love the Lord, for He heard my voice; He heard my cry for mercy. Because He turned His ear to me, I will call on Him as long as I live.“ Indeed, God has heard our cries, and we will call on His name as long as we live. Additionally, we would not have been able to go through these challenging times without the support of the community of believers. They were like the hands and feet of God doing His work. We are truly grateful and touched.

Felicia also reflects on what the physical condition and recovery meant to her. While some might believe that it was my own resilience to bounce back from adversity, I know that it was not by my might and strength that I overcame. I overcame because of the grace and strength of God that sustained me. He intervened time and time again to show me His greatness and goodness. God alone is the center of my testimony. When I first found out about my condition, I was devastated. I am young and healthy – how could this have happened to me? Now, I am grateful that God has given me a second chance in life.

8

Before my physical condition, my wish was to graduate quickly and enter the workforce so that I could start earning a decent salary. Now, my perspective of a job is no longer just for the sake of getting income – it is an avenue to live out God’s calling for my life. I am now seeking the Lord patiently on the career path that He wants me to take. I cling onto the worship song that I heard in the ICU ward from the voices of angels. My heart’s desire is for my Potter to use and mold me so that I can live out my God-given destiny through God’s strength alone.

Despite concerns about a bleak labour market, about seven in 10 Nanyang Technological University (NTU) students this year secured jobs before graduation, a preliminary survey of more than 5,000 graduates showed. CELEBRATING THE 80 TH ANNIVERSARY OF TANZANIA ASSEMBLIES OF GOD

INTO THE WILD BY K R I S T I N E L E E

I had always imagined missions to be direct, on-the-ground endeavors. Never mind that a huge part of Jesus’ ministry on earth was teaching His disciples how to fish for men. I knew that training and consultation was a key component of Trinity’s missions. But structures and methods did not quite equate to the move of God for me. That is, until my trip with Pastor Dominic to Arusha, Tanzania. Tanzania, for many travelers, conjures up the image of the Serengeti. It’s where Simba in The Lion King came to his identity. Arusha was the launching place for many to travel into Tanzania’s epic wilderness. Pastor Dominic was there to celebrate with Tanzania Assemblies of God (AG) on their 80th Anniversary, and speak at their Pastors’ Conference. Tanzania AG had another exciting celebration. Ten years ago, they launched their Decade of Harvest. Then, they had 3,000 churches. Now, they have 10,000! And they’re not slowing down. After this, the leaders will meet to strategize for the

next 10 years. AG churches in other African countries are beginning to emulate the same. When I heard this, “Decade of Expansion” flashed across my mind. The kingdom of God is advancing and rapidly so. Trinity has been pursuing God’s will! I would soon discover that God has a bigger role for us in His global agenda. There was a great celebratory buzz when 4,500 pastors from Tanzania and other nations gathered in large white tents on red, dusty grounds. Many were leaders and decision-makers in their nations – General Superintendents, founders of Christian organizations, missionaries, and church planters.

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.

Despite a full day of travel and arriving just two hours prior, Pastor Dominic took to the stage with fervor to equip these leaders about church growth. He gave them practical handles they could use in their ministries and nations. He was teaching the pastors to fish. “Pastor Dominic really blew me away. That’s our way of saying how much something or someone has been a great impact,” Rev Asaph Rindiriza (Assistant General Superintendent, AG Uganda) shared expressively. He was ready to empower the leaders of the 600 churches he oversees. Everyone I spoke to echoed the same sentiments. Empowerment was what Rev Dr Barnabas Mtokambali (General Superintendent of Tanzania AG and President of the Africa AG Alliance) desired, “Part of the problem we

have experienced in the past years is that some of the churches have plateaued,” he shared, “Many didn’t know why. After learning what is taking place in Trinity, I thought ‘Why not take some of my pastors to Trinity’s Pastors’ Conference to learn?’ The churches of these pastors had between 250-300 people. Many of those churches now have between 900-1,500 members.” It was a proud Trinitarian moment for me. The thought of over one million people empowered from this single trip was mindblowing. God has anointed us to be more than a church of strategic leaders – we are to be strategic leaders. We may not have done the groundwork as on conventional mission trips, we have borne fruit many times more.

“See my beautiful ones,” God whispered, “each culture is unique and so precious. Just as each unique person is precious to Me.”

Why Pastor Dominic’s grueling schedule? Why the nations? As I watched the gloriously attired dancers worshipping God so joyfully with their culture, I was suddenly almost in tears. Through the lively African drumbeats, I heard a still, small voice. “See my beautiful ones,” God whispered, “each culture is unique and so precious. Just as each unique person is precious to Me.” The expansive Serengeti and its wildlife is a celebration of God’s handiwork. But, as I looked at each of the faces in the stadium, I was looking at the Creation most exquisitely fashioned and loved by the Creator. I didn’t launch off into Tanzania’s wilderness. But I did launch off into the heart of my God of all nations. It is wild. And exciting.

DECADE OF REVIVAL MEETINGS

P R E PAR I N G FOR GLOBAL R E V I VA L 2033 IS A SIGNIFICANT MILESTONE FOR CHRISTENDOM, A YEAR THAT MARKS THE SECOND MILLENNIUM OF CHRIST’S ASCENSION AND THE DAY OF PENTECOST.

“It’s time to take our place as God’s strategic leaders, rising to new levels of authority and faith.”

At a time when the world population is expected to surpass the eight billion mark, there’s no better occasion to see a powerful manifestation of heaven on earth. It is in this spirit that churches around the world have begun preparations for the Decade of Revival, a global Assemblies of God initiative for global revival. On July 1-3, Trinity hosted leaders from around the world to discuss how to empower local churches for the multitude of events that will mark this Jubilee of Jubilees. With Pastor Dominic Yeo’s appointment as Chairman for this initiative, Trinity has been positioned at the forefront of God’s international expansion plans.

These past two years have seen us faithful with a few things. Now, God trusts us to be faithful with much, much more. It’s time to take our place as God’s strategic leaders, rising to new levels of authority and faith, and committed to doing our part for the great harvest that is to come.

In 2020, the global church will kick off the Decade of Revival. That makes the Decade of Expansion more than a Trinity endeavor.

elpful, fruitful, and really invigorating. These were the resounding takeaways from participants of this year’s Asia Pacific Assemblies of God Fellowship (APAGF) meeting in Bali, held from July 23-25 and led by Pastor Dominic Yeo (Chairman of the APAGF). APAGF comprises general councils in 31 nations across the diverse geographical region – from Korea and Japan in the north to Australia and New Zealand in the south. It serves as a platform for the General Superintendents to discuss strategic initiatives among nations. This year’s meeting brought together more than 60 participants and included separate tracks for Next Generation (NextGen) – leaders who deliberated strategies to engage the younger generation – and for the first time, a gathering of Assemblies of God Asia Pacific bible schools that discussed greater collaboration between colleges, theological issues, and insights that are of relevance to the region.

“I found this meeting to be very productive. The dialogue between the superintendents and what each country is doing has been very invigorating and fruitful,” shared Rev Iliafi Esera (Treasurer of APAGF and General Superintendent of Assemblies of God New Zealand). Rev Paul Linh (Vice General Superintendent, Assemblies of God Vietnam) noted that the meeting was very helpful for every country’s leader. “We have a very strong fellowship and built good relationships. We understand and love each other, and can help each other more.” More than just connecting and fellowshipping with one another, there was an atmosphere of unity as the

General Superintendents provided updates on their countries. “APAGF provides the kind of unity and cooperation that is very important for the church. At this meeting, I learned many things from many countries,” said Rev Lee Young Hoon (General Superintendent, Assemblies of God Korea). A common thread from the engaging sharing was the need to work closer together. Pastor Dominic issued a call for better communication, collaboration, and coordination for the furtherance of God’s kingdom across all fronts. It was a call that received enthusiastic response from the General Superintendents. “As the church becomes more global with large churches doing things everywhere, we need to find a new way of communicating and empowering while still keeping people accountable,” summed up Rev Sean Stanton (National Secretary, Australian Christian Churches). At the end of the meeting, the participants were thrilled because of what had been accomplished and even more excited on what is to come.

NEXTGEN: BUILDING BRIDGES, CLOSING GAPS Formed last year, NextGen leaders came together for their second annual meeting to lay the foundation for the strategies to engage the younger generation in the region. According to Pastor Gerald Tan (the meeting’s chair), NextGen aims to be the bridge between each country’s executive committee and NextGen leaders, and close gaps in the communication between generations. Together, the group hopes to establish strong and regular engagement with NextGen leaders through multiple platforms, including social media; be very deliberate to stir up Pentecostal and spiritual awakening; and build a core leadership team to drive NextGen in each country.

GETTING TO KNOW THE L-TEAM

Director, Strategic Operations

WHO IS THE PERSON BEHIND THE PASTOR? IN THE SECOND PART OF OUR SERIES, WE’LL CONTINUE TO GET TO KNOW THOSE WHO MAKE UP TRINITY’S LEADERSHIP TEAM. PASTOR DANNY LEONG

FROM ANSWERING THEIR FULL-TIME CALL TO MEMORABLE TRINITY MOMENTS, WE TALK TO PASTOR DAVID CHNG (DIRECTOR, STRATEGIC OPERATIONS) AND PASTOR DANNY LEONG (EXECUTIVE ADMINISTRATOR) ON WHAT IT MEANS TO HAVE A STRONG FAITH LIFE. ROLE IN THE LEADERSHIP TEAM PDC As the Director of Strategic Operations, I oversee the various projects and new initiatives that are taking place in Trinity, including the Trinity@Choa Chu Kang building project. As a bridge between the Leadership Team and various committees, I work to ensure that everything we do is in line with the church vision – requirements are communicated and fulfilled with the resources we have.

It ranges from developing policies and processes to providing input on church strategies and plans as I work with the Board and leadership team for the smooth running of the church. As a registered charity, I also ensure that our operations are in line with the Charities Act and other government requirements. ANSWERING MY FULL-TIME CALL PDC Though I had promptings to serve God since my youth days, I also wanted to spend a few years in the marketplace to gain corporate experience. After a few years of that, the Vice President of

my company asked me where I wanted to be in 10 years. That same week, a pastor asked me the same question! Both people told me that it took them 10 years to get to where they are, and that’s when I knew that these encounters were not coincidental. It was not my plan then to come into full-time ministry so soon. I still wanted to spend some time in the corporate world and was pursuing another job opportunity. I went into the final stage of a job interview, and things were going well until the third person asked a question that changed the dynamic of the interview.

“David, what do you foresee yourself doing in the next 3-5 years?”

“I think I see myself working full-time in the church.”

From that, I knew that it was time to prepare for my call. I enrolled in the Certificate of Cell Ministry program (the predecessor to Ministry Internship). If I would be serving God in full-time ministry, then why not give Him the best years of my life?

PDL I see responding to God’s call as a five-stage process.

Stage 1 – Hearing from God Stage 2 – Surrendering to the call Stage 3 – Preparing for the open door Stage 4 – Responding to the open door in obedience Stage 5 – Working out the call by faith

As we progress along the stages in making God the central focus of our purpose and priority, the “me” in us must become smaller and the “God” must become greater (John 3:30).

In 1995, I began Stage 1 and remained there for about two years before moving to Stage 2 at a district camp in 1997.

I quickly understood the truth that after we have surrendered to God’s call, it did not necessarily mean that we would enter into it immediately. There is still God’s perfect timing. PDL - Pastor Danny, PDC - Pastor David

I waited in Stage 3 for seven years while preparing for my call by serving in various pastoral functions and ministries. I became a bi-vocational pastor in 2001.

God opened the door to full-time ministry three years later in 2004 and I responded in obedience (Stage 4).

For the past 15 years, I have been in Stage 5, walking out my call by faith, serving in Trinity in different administrative and pastoral roles.

IF I WASN’T A PASTOR, I WOULD… PDC …be a teacher!

I’ve always enjoyed teaching and even did a bit of relief teaching before university. In many ways, being part of Trinity’s trainings and consultations allows me to live out this passion of helping others grow.

Going through materials like New Beginnings for Grow felt shallow, and I was critical about everything that was being taught. I gave my leaders such a hard time that the Campus pastor met me to address my attitude. Though I was unhappy about the “confrontation,” it was the start of a journey towards humility.

While God spoke to me about it during my times of devotion, it was the relentless belief of the carecell that softened my heart. When they made efforts to pray for me, to get to know me and to include me in activities, I started to see that they knew much more about God than I did. Though I knew the Word, they were the ones living out the Word. Their acceptance and friendship made a life-changing impact in the way I see and relate to God’s people.

marriage, and godly relationships. We thank God that we played a part in the marriage of a few couples who met in our home cell. Recently, I had the honor of solemnizing the wedding of a daughter of one of these couples.

As we see individuals and families go through the cycles of life through our ministry in Trinity, it is humbling to see how the Lord has used us to speak into young lives.

UNFORGETTABLE MINISTRY LESSON PDC At last year’s Israel Pilgrimage when I was leading a portion about the Sabbath, I wanted to sing a song but I couldn’t remember the name or title of it. As someone who is organized and prefers to have everything under control, it was a terrible feeling to

Since it was the Sabbath, I wanted to practice what I was preaching. Instead of striving to figure out the song, I changed plans and asked the group to pray in pairs. In that moment of surrender, God ministered powerfully to the group. Prophetic words were shared, and many were touched to the point of tears. Two people had the same vision of God walking through the place we were in and it is something that many still talk about. What’s beautiful was that the one line of the song I wanted to sing was “reach out and touch the Lord as He passes by.” While we do our best to prepare for every situation, that moment of amnesia reminded me that faith is also about daring to surrender, step back, and let God take control.

PDL In the early days of full-time ministry,

I accompanied Pastor Dowdy to Thailand to support her at a carecell conference. I did not expect to do any teaching because I was just learning how to teach and preach.

The evening before the start of the conference, she told me I would be teaching key parts of the training the next day! I could not say no or offer any excuses. Instead, I saw this as a divine assignment and was honored by the confidence Pastor Dowdy had placed in me, a new minister. After much prayer and preparation, by God’s grace, the training went well. When divine assignments come, we can do them with humble confidence that He will empower us and provide what we need for success.

From that experience, I learned not to despise one’s youth in ministry. When God calls, the Holy Spirit empowers. When divine assignments come, we can do them with humble confidence that He will empower us and provide what we need for success. It is not about us. It is all about Jesus. When we lean on Him, we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us (Philippians 4:13).

COMPLETE THE SENTENCE: FAITH LIFE IS… PDC …audaciously believing and doing what God has promised.

Instant healings are meaningful because they demonstrate God’s power and love in very personal ways. As a Pentecostal church, we believe that miracles should be a common feature in our lives and expressions of our faith. While hosting a Sunday service at Trinity@Paya Lebar, God prompted me to pray for people with shoulder problems. Throughout the week, I received testimonies from various people who experienced complete healing after weeks, months, and years of pain. Some even approached me with tears testifying that the prayer was exactly what they needed.

mother who made a decision for Jesus a few months later. While this miracle healing was not the trigger point for salvation, I am encouraged that it was one of the factors that led to it after years of evangelism.

In my recent health screening, the doctor made referrals to three specialists for three separate medical conditions that were detected. Initially, I took referral letters and did not think much of the situation except to make the specialist appointments. The faith moment came when I started to reflect that by making those appointments, I would be living in fear and not faith. I remembered that we are to grow our faith life this year. I trust in God’s healing on all my conditions. I decided to grow my faith life by not making the specialist appointments except for one condition that could be life-threatening and might require immediate medical intervention. The appointment is to affirm God’s healing for His glory. I declare that God is Jehovah Rapha, my Healer. PDL - Pastor Danny, PDC - Pastor David

As the night drew on, physical appetites began to awaken, catching up with our spiritual hunger. This was no cause for alarm as a sumptuous supper of siew mai, char siew pau, tau huey, and you tiao were ready for us! 24:07 closed with a time of intercession for our families, schools, co-curricular activity groups, and IGNYTE. A loud war cry erupted across the Chapel as we arose in faith for breakthrough and the establishment of God’s will. As the clock struck 6:30 am, we saw how God had transformed us into a generation that understands what it means to have a prayer life built on our deep love and passion for God and His people. May we continue to boldly declare His destiny into our generation.

TES TIMON IES F ROM IGN Y TERS Shawn Chia, age 20 This year, I’ve learned the importance of making prayer my lifestyle. Prayers should not be something I only find myself doing in church. It should be a part of my everyday life. Eugene Seah, age 14 At first, I thought 24:07 was just another prayer meeting. But God brought me back to the basics of my prayer life and far exceeded my expectations. Because of this, I have a new perspective on overnight prayer meetings and am already looking forward to the next one! Jan Sze En Rei, age 14 I learned that prayer is not only about asking God for things but a way that I can seek Him and catch His heart for me. I can encounter Him no matter where I am as long as I press in to hear His voice.

Kaela Yeong, age 14 One part that impacted me a lot was the blindfolded worship session. This reminded me that worship is not based on the music or the people around us, but our own heart to praise God. Hannah Cheong, age 12 My brother and I joined Trinity in March, and this is our first time attending an overnight prayer meeting. This experience has helped me to grow in my faith and deepened my walk with God. It has also changed the dynamics of my prayer life. I am thankful that I had the opportunity to attend 24:07.

THEOLOGY FOR TODAY

THE KINGDOM OF GOD MATTERS A PARADIGM SHIFT, A NEW PERSPECTIVE ON LIVING

BY R E V D R B A B U I MMA N U E L VE N K A T A R A MA N TCA COLLEGE

theology for today

THE “KINGDOM OF GOD” (IN MARK AND LUKE) OR “KINGDOM OF HEAVEN” (IN MATTHEW) IS A DOMINANT THEME IN JESUS’ TEACHINGS. OVER THE CENTURIES, VARIOUS CHRISTIAN TRADITIONS HAVE ATTEMPTED TO UNDERSTAND IT.

O

ne faith group considers itself as the kingdom of God on earth. Another envisions the kingdom of heaven as the restoration on the earth of the conditions similar to the Garden of Eden. Yet another believe that when, upon His return, Jesus would set up a literal and physical kingdom of God on earth. But what did Jesus really mean by that phrase?

While the idea of God’s rule (theocracy) runs through the Old Testament and Judaism,1 the expression “kingdom of God” is absolutely unique to Jesus. Therefore, we have to look for its meaning in the person and life of Jesus Himself. In this short article, I shall endeavor to offer a perspective on the kingdom of God based on my understanding of Jesus – His world, mind, life, work, and language in the Gospels

ISSUE 3

– with a disclaimer that my reading is not conclusive or final or normative.

JESUS’ EXTENSIVE USE OF METAPHORS

The idea of God’s kingdom itself did not have one central point of convergence.

Jesus was not a philosopher or a systematic theologian in the modern sense of the term. He, as an itinerant preacher, made good use of the metaphors that were available to Him, which His audiences also knew and understood. The different metaphors used to explain the different aspects of the kingdom of God were necessary also because the idea of God’s kingdom itself did not have one central point of convergence. For instance, in Matthew 13, Jesus says that the kingdom of heaven is like people who sow good seed in the field (verses 24-30). Immediately, He compares the kingdom of heaven to the mustard seed (verses 31-32), apparently

meaning that the kingdom of heaven cannot be and should not be judged by its seemingly insignificant size. We normally associate size with power and strength. Jesus’ parable challenges such notions. It is almost like saying, “Never judge a book by its cover.” The kingdom’s inevitable growth is not contingent on the size, but on its intrinsic character to grow. Similarly, Jesus compares the kingdom of heaven to a treasure hidden in a field (verses 44-46). The field is a common sight, not the treasure. Only someone with extraordinary insight, who intentionally looks for treasure, can identify the treasure hidden in the field. It is an uncommon skill. Likewise, identifying the kingdom of heaven in the common and ordinary sights, events, and experiences of life requires wisdom and higher insight. It adds a sense of intentionality to the otherwise ordinary, mundane, and meaningless routines of life. The kingdom of heaven is certainly worth more than any other treasure one may possess or wish to possess.

The kingdom’s inevitable growth is not contingent on the size, but on its intrinsic character to grow.

Later, in the same chapter, Jesus compares the kingdom of heaven to a fishing net being let down to catch fish (verses 47-50). It catches all kinds of fish, good and bad. Eventually, the bad fish are thrown away. Jesus’ point seems to be that the world is full of all kinds of people. Who is good and who is bad will be determined on the day of reckoning. Meanwhile, we should not waste time trying to decide who is good and who is bad. That is not our job. If one thinks one is good, one should continue to be good without judging anyone else. We are reminded of the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector (Luke 18:9-14).

A HIERARCHICAL MODEL OF SOCIETY The people of the Roman Empire in Jesus’ time were defined by very distinct social classes2 and social status.3 It was a society where the gap between the upper class

The term “status refers to a person’s position within a social system. This is status as social position… in such a social system of ranked positions status is invariably assessed in terms of what others perceive a person’s position to be worth. This is status as value. Because status as value depends on the perception and appraisal of others.” See Bruce J. Malina and Jerome H. (emperors, kings, rulers, and nobles) and all others was wide and unnavigable. It was an aristocratic order of society, an unequal world, one in which the rich and the powerful were on top and the rest below. Ninety-two percent of the population were classified as subjects (e.g., tenant farmers, day laborers, dependents of patrons, destitute, widows, the ill, slaves).4 The majority were generally in service of the elites – subjugated, subjected to, subservient, and prostrating. In a world where the justice system always favored the upper class,5 the lower strata longed for a day of redemption and deliverance. The more their world was becoming hopeless, the more they desperately hoped for the messianic age of political redemption6 that would bring an end to all sorrows and pains, all servitude and ungodliness. Luke’s Gospel, particularly in the infancy narratives (1:52, 69, 71, 74; 2:38) and in the post-resurrection passages (24:21; Acts 1:6), provides a vignette of such hopes running very high, even among those who

were immediately part of Jesus’ life and ministry.

THE HERODIAN MODEL OF KINGSHIP AND KINGDOM Jesus was very much a person and product of His times. From His birth until His death, Palestine was governed as a vassal state of the Roman Empire under the rule of the Herods: Herod the Great and his three sons in what I call the “Herodian model.” Considered by the Roman Senate as the “king of Judaea,”7 Herod the Great was mean, ruthless, and brutal. Prone to anger, contemptuous of justice, and suspicious of everyone around him, he indiscriminately executed all his political rivals – real, potential, and perceived.8 A difficulty with the Herodian model is how it can be used as an analogy that imagines God as a despot, a king,9 and His kingdom as a feudal society.10 But was that Jesus’ intention when talking about the kingdom of God? I would like to propose three aspects that made Jesus’ idea of the kingdom of God as a

10 7

concept completely different to what was known and experienced at the time.

THE KINGDOM OF GOD CHARACTERIZED BY FREEDOM AND DELIVERANCE Given the Herodian model of kingship and kingdom, Jesus should necessarily address the socioeconomic and political issues that immediately concerned His people, but yet He came up with an avant-garde idea that completely broke away from the old models.

Jesus began His ministry proclaiming, “The time has come… The kingdom of God has come near. Repent…” (Mark 1:15; Luke 21:31) and “…the kingdom of God has come upon you” (Matthew 12:28; Luke 11:20). The language of coming “near” or “coming upon” relates to what is technically called “apocalypticism,” a worldview where evil is so entrenched in the history and society that only divine intervention could remedy the situation. God is mindful of the proliferation of evil and will act decisively to destroy the evildoers.11 Every Jew, including Jesus, had this worldview. They expected God’s drastic intervention to deal a retributive justice to their enemies. But in their minds, the only way of reacting to oppressive and repressive regimes was the model of resistance offered by the zealots.12 Jesus came proclaiming the apocalypse of God’s kingdom, that it was about to break in and that it would be an apocalypse of freedom and deliverance from every kind of bondage.13 The zealots fought

ISSUE 3

to oust all the uncircumcised, particularly the Romans, from their land, thereby trying to create a purely Jewish land. They also imagined that even God Himself would dramatically intervene in their history, on their behalf and validating their militant approach, to make their Jewish nationalism a reality. On the contrary, Jesus’ idea of the kingdom of God is that it is so intrinsically powerful that it will necessarily grow, like the mustard seed, without the need at all for an armed conflict. In fact, armed conflict and the kingdom of God are mutually exclusive. Further, the kingdom of God is so all-inclusive that it does not and will not create “we versus they” and “us versus them” divisions. No one is excluded, Jews or Gentiles (cf. Galatians 3:28). Paul puts it a lot more emphatically, “For He Himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility.” (Ephesians 2:14). The freedom that Jesus seemingly implies in His person and works is the freedom of the mind.

108

The people of the kingdom are not subjects, but the children of the God of the kingdom, heirs and joint heirs.

He called it the metanoia – a change of mind. He also demonstrated this freedom in His healings (e.g., Mark 5:29, 34) and exorcisms (e.g., Matthew 12:28; Luke 7:21; 8:2). On many occasions, after a healing He said, “Your faith has saved you” (e.g., Luke 7:50).

THE KINGDOM OF GOD AS A REPUBLIC

In those days, meals were expected to reinforce the roles and statuses of members of a group.14 Who one sits and eats with shows one’s social class and honor. Moreover, banquets were an upper-class privilege. In the parable, however, the banquet ends with the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind, people with no honor15 and status.16

While the Herodian model provided a top-down hierarchical model of society, the kingdom of God (embodied by the life of Jesus) offered a bottom-up and people-oriented model – a kind of God-ruled republic, as it were. Here, there is no concept of subjugation or subordinates, only freedom and liberation.

Jesus reaches out to the lepers, Jews and Samaritans (Luke 17:11-19), and to the demonpossessed (e.g., Luke 4:31-37; 8:26-39; 9:37-43) – a breach of purity and ethnic protocols, In addition, He has been called the friend of sinners and tax collectors (Matthew 11:19; Luke 7:34), defying the honorcodes of the day and breaking the social barriers.

Further, the kingdom of God as a Republic was non-elitist in its essence and approach. In His speech in the Nazareth synagogue, Jesus singles out the poor, the prisoners, the blind, and the oppressed, and those who were no one’s reference points as recipients of His mission (Luke 4:18-19). Jesus uses the parable of the great banquet (Luke 14:15-23), to reverse the honor-code.

ISSUE 3

Jesus uses the occasion of meals to reverse roles and statuses. He had no problem eating with a Pharisee (Luke 7:36), a tax collector, Zacchaeus (Luke 19:1-10), a leper (Mark 14:3), and Samaritans (John 4:40). In doing so, He showed that in the kingdom of God, people are respected not because of their social and economic definitions, but just as they are. The Kingdom of God has

10 9

no regard for status symbols and honor codes. In this republic, people find their true authentic selves and are accepted as such.

THE KINGDOM OF GOD AS ALL-INCLUSIVE AND A FAMILY Jesus began His public proclamation with the idea of metanoia (repentance). The noun metanoia and its verbal form metanoeŌ translates to changing one’s mind, one’s way of thinking and views after proper assessment of the prior way of thinking.17

Neyrey, “Honor and Shame in Luke-Acts: Pivotal Values of the Mediterranean World,” in The Social World of Luke-Acts, 25-65. With reference to the kingdom of God, one must consider that the terms “king,” “kingdom,” “ruler,” and “rule” belong to an ancient world. “Monarchy,” “imperial,” and “your majesty” are old-time ideas. The way we use such terms make Christianity a kind of imperial cult, like the Romans had. While Jesus used these terms because they were the only terms at His disposal, His ministry revolved around redefining them. He did it primarily by calling God “Father.” God is still the King, because the kingdom is His. In the “Lord’s Prayer,” Jesus taught His disciples to call God “Father” (e.g., Matthew 6:9-10; cf. v.6), while praying, “Your kingdom come” (Matthew 6:10). The book of Acts shows that the idea of the kingdom of God includes all humanity. For example, after His resurrection, Jesus talks to His disciples in Jerusalem about the kingdom of God (Acts 1:3); Philip proclaims the kingdom of God in Samaria (Acts 8:12); and Paul proclaims the kingdom of God in Rome (Acts 28:31). The early

ISSUE 3

Christian preachers such as Peter and Paul put the same idea differently: “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” (Acts 2:21; Romans 10:13). This humanity that gathers around the kingdom of God is called the “one new humanity” (Ephesians 2:15).

had something to do with the kingdom of God, perhaps in seeing the God of the kingdom differently, different from the way the Jewish scriptures had portrayed Him as a warlord, as a feudal despot, a warmongering blood-thirsty God who rules by terror and terrorizing.

BECOMING A CITIZEN OF THE KINGDOM

Now, as Jesus puts it, the God of the kingdom is the Father. The people of the kingdom are not subjects, but the children of the God of the kingdom, heirs and joint heirs (cf. Romans 8:17).

How does one become a citizen of the kingdom of God? I can think of metanoia (“repentance”) as the only way. Many ancient Greco-Roman religions recruited members by making them go through certain initiation rites.18 Baptism was one such initiation rite. Even in early Judaism, baptism was some kind of an initiation rite (e.g., Mark 1:4). Unlike the other religions and cults of the times, the kingdom of God idea demanded a metanoia as an entry requirement. Jesus began His ministry with a call to “repent” in light of the arrival of the kingdom of God (e.g., Mark 1:15). This new mindset, a new way of thinking, must have

110

In this sense, although we still talk in “kingdom terms” – it is relational; it is a family. Ultimately, approaching God as the Father is the best way to stay in relationship with Him.

A CODE OF CONDUCT BASED ON LOVE What are the rules that govern life within the kingdom? The covenant community in the Old Testament was governed by the Ten Commandments 17 David A. Lambert, How Repentance Became Biblical: Judaism, Christianity, and the Interpretation of Scripture (New York, NY: Oxford University Press, 2016), 153-156.

(Exodus 20:2-17). They are still valid; they are not abrogated. But Jesus rephrased them for the kingdom community: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ”Love your neighbor as yourself.” 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments. MATTHEW 22:37-40 37

Love is the most absolutely basic rule. In fact, Jesus gave it as His command: “My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.” (John 15:12) Everything else we can think of as a rule proceeds from this one core idea of love for God and one another. Every act that does not proceed from the motive of love, even if it is done in the name of God,19 is politicking and politicking is the negation of the kingdom of God. Love is what the kingdom of God looks like in public.20

ISSUE 3

CONCLUSION Because the Palestine of Jesus’ time was in a different context and time, every culture, society, generation, and human setting must reinterpret the kingdom for their world. This certainly calls for a new way of thinking, a new mindset, a new metanoia. Given an understanding of Jesus as a person and His world, the authentic Jesus we meet in the Gospels is very much a person involved in the affairs of His society. The more He was involved in the here-and-now matters, the more people were convinced that He was the Son of God. He was not too otherworldly that He could not think of the existential crises of His society. Similarly, He was not too existential that He could not talk about, or engage in, the affairs of His Father (cf. Luke 2:49). This is something for us to emulate.

The kingdom of God is in our midst in the form of a new metanoia – a new way of thinking. Yet, we are not just citizens of heaven. We are also children of the Most High God. Now set free from our bondages and loved for who we are, we in turn are called to live out these characteristics in our everyday lives – to love one another and treat each other with kindness, dignity, and respect. In this way, we give the world a glimpse of heaven on earth, a way of living that far exceeds what we know and experience now.
