We’ve Got Mail! Star Letter
‘Fatherhood What’s the secret?’ is a reminder article for me. Being a father to two young kids, I am often not sure how to handle parenting issues. There are many strokes to parenting. There is a vast sea of knowledge we can access, but this article gives me a concise summary of the important things I should look out for. I was really encouraged by Pastor Wilson and Sam Kuna’s insights. Their sharing tells me that being a great father is attainable and not so hard after all. One area I need to work on is Spiritual Equipping. Discipleship begins at home. Our children look at how we practice spiritual disciplines and model after us. I will now be intentional to seize teachable moments to share my faith with them. Jonathan Ong, North District .................................................................... I eagerly look forward to each issue as the stories featured never fail to inspire me in my walk with God. The personal encounters shared in the Up Close section bears true testament to the greatness of God and how He touches each and every single life. I can relate to the fears and challenges experienced by our fellow Trinitarians and it brings me great comfort to know that all difficulties can be overcome with God. You guys never fail to amaze me! I can’t wait for the next issue already. Winston Choo, East District Simply love the Trinitarian! Whenever I get a copy, I would bring it to my office and leave it on my table. I remember how my colleagues will pick it up from my table and start reading the articles. It is a great tool that I use to share Christ with my colleagues and invite them to church. The real life miracles always speak of God’s divine healing and provision and they never fail to spur me to walk in greater faith in our God. Valerie Tan, North District

It’s time to Take Courage to Grow a Lasting Legacy! At a recent Healing Rally in Taiwan, I sensed God’s prompting immediately after the time of worship and asked those that needed healing to come forward and be prayed for. At that juncture, I knew that I had to trust God to show His love for these people who badly needed His touch. Faith at that point was spelt as COURAGE. People flooded the altars, desperate for healing. God was there and instantaneously, we witnessed great miracles from Him: a young blind girl could see, a young boy could walk, and an elderly woman could hear. When we step out in courage, God releases His miracles. This month, let us take courage to envision greater things.
This issue, read how the church and carecells have been blessed by those who lead by faith and serve with courage – p26. Also, glean how God met Investment Bankers, p36, Eugene and Sarah, who had everything in life but were unfulfilled. Their encounters with God had transformed them and caused them to leave a legacy. Last month, Trinity had a powerful prayer conference with Rev David Doery. I believe that there was a significant shift in our spiritual gears for our individual lives and for the church. God is about to do something big in Trinity. So Trinitarians, let us keep our spiritual fervor high, walk in faith and expect great things from our God that goes beyond comprehension.

Going forward, I see Trinity as a church of strategic leaders addressing the need of this world - Hope. In order to raise such strategic, Christ-centered leaders, it is imperative that three foundation areas be established. Their: 1) Personhood be formed through good theological truths and spiritual disciplines 2) Perspectives be widened to relate Biblical truths to the world that they live in 3) Practice be anchored by a set of theological frameworks so that their actions are impactful and transforming.” 10

The Life Conference held on Jun 7-9, 2012 at Trinity@Paya Lebar brought Trinitarians to their knees at the night revival meetings and many were blessed by the day workshops featuring practical topics on work, family and parenting. Attended by 863 adults, 245 youths and 281 children, the presence of God resonated strongly throughout the conference anchored by guest speakers Rev Dr Ivan Satyavrata, Pastor Dr Philip Lyn and our Senior Pastor Dominic Yeo. Lye Huixian reports.

I’ve been struggling spiritually and at work, and the conferences and workshops provided me with renewed perspective, especially the Thank God It’s Monday Again workshop. Jeannie Lum, East District 13
Youth Track The Youths celebrated LIFE through fun and exciting games. They had workshops on experiencing God through the five senses. In one occasion, they worshipped God while being blindfolded. This enabled them to shut out all distractions and self consciousness, and focused on God alone. It was such a powerful time that many experienced a breakthrough in their worship.
This event was featured in TODAY newspaper and TODAYonline’s article.
Having experienced LIFE in God, they became Life-Givers to the needy on the final day of the conference. Our youths blessed 400 low-income households in the MacPherson Estate with packs of rice, biscuits and other snacks which were sponsored by Dairy Farm Singapore and Trinity.

POWERof the HOLY SPIRIT the
BY PASTOR DOMINIC YEO
18
A
story was told to me – A husband and wife in their late 60s with their son, who was about 30 years old, lived in the country and they had never been to the city. Once, they visited a major city and were looking for a place to stay. Being simple country folk, they thought you could just go to a neighbor and stay with them. But they were told they had to go to a hotel. So they made their way to one. While their son was trying to check the whole family into the hotel, Dad was looking around when he heard a ‘ting’ sound. He turned around and saw this thing called the ‘elevator’. This elevator made another ‘ting’ sound and the door opened. Just then, a crinkly old lady, shaking and hunched over her walking stick, stepped into the elevator and the door closed. Not long after, he heard the elevator ‘ting’ again. This time, as the elevator door opened, a beautiful shapely young woman stepped out of the elevator. He looked at the elevator, took a second look at the woman, looked back at the elevator and started to excitedly nudge his son. The son said, “What is it Dad?” The old man replied, “Go and get your Mom.”
Everyone loves instantaneous transformation. Many Christians desire to live a bolder and more courageous faith; many desire to break free from old patterns of sin that hinder them from moving forward. The early church experienced an instantaneous transformation. The power of the Holy Spirit is a transformative power that transforms our lives. It is so important that Jesus told His disciples in Luke 24:49 “I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.” In Acts 2, we see the Spirit of God coming into the Upper Room, with the sound of the wind and with cloven tongues of fire, the fire rested on the disciples in the Upper Room. Before this event, the disciples were a bunch of cowards afraid for their own lives but because of the baptism of the Spirit of God, tremendous power and courage was released into the disciples. This was the power of the Holy Spirit that forever changed the world.
19
What is the Power of the Holy Spirit? Let us examine Acts 1:8: There are four truths we can garner from this verse when we talk about the power of the Holy Spirit.
Promise Provision Power Acts 1:8: But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.
Positioning First Truth
“You Will” – The Promise of the Power of the Holy Spirit Firstly, understand that it is God who made this promise. Jesus said in Acts 1:8 that you will receive the power of the Holy Spirit. This is a promise from God to us. God is a promise-keeper. When He says “you will”, you can be sure of it. Note that Jesus used the word ‘but’ before “you will receive”. In the preceding verse, Acts 1:7, the disciples were wondering when God will restore Jerusalem and when Christ will return to establish His Kingdom. We need to understand why the disciples were thinking this way. The Jews were under the oppression of the Roman Empire and they were hoping that Jesus will bring them liberation. However, Jesus did not address when He will return. Instead He promised them a power that will help them overcome their difficulties – the power of the Holy Spirit. 20
Similarly, many of us experience certain injustice in our lives and we wish that Christ would come back quickly so that everything will be in order once again. However, Jesus reminds us that it is not in our authority to know when Christ will return but we will receive the power to deal with it. You could be facing a trying situation that desperately needs a breakthrough; you may not know how to get round it or when the miracle will come. God is saying to you today: “You will” receive power to overcome, to breakthrough and to establish. In the Greek text, “you will” could be understood in two different ways. It is a: 1) Statement of fact. So when God makes a promise that “you will”, it is considered done. No doubts about it. 2) Mandate. A mandate means it is a command. For every command, mandate or instruction, there is a prerequisite. There are certain conditions you have to obey. It is a given that Jesus has promised you this, but it is dependent on your posture of receiving it. Although it is a fact that God has promised us the power of the Holy Spirit, it is also a command that you must do something about. We have to align ourselves to it. To go three quarters of the way and not all the way is not alignment. That is the reason why a lot of present-day believers do not experience the tremendous transformative power of God in their lives. It is like an electrical appliance that is
plugged in but not switched on. The power is available 24/7, but the switch is not on. The Bible tells us in 2 Peter 1:3: His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life. The divine power is the divine power of God Himself who is the Holy Spirit living in us. The reason why we do not experience success and victory in our lives is because a lot of times we are not “switched on” to this power. We do not align ourselves completely to God’s instructions. Are you “switched on” to the power of the Holy Spirit?
Second Truth
Receive
” “You Will - The Provision of the Power of the Holy Spirit This word ‘receive’ in Greek is called ‘lambano’. In English, it simply means to just sit and receive. But ‘lambano’ means “to take”, “to accept” and “to catch”. It means to stretch out and take. If you do not, you will not receive it. On top of promising us the power of the Holy Spirit, God, through His grace, also provides us this power. It is a fact that God’s provision is available by His grace, but if you just sit there and wait, nothing is going to happen. “You will receive” requires an act of faith to stretch out and take it. If you do not seize it, you will not be able to use it. The problem with us not experiencing the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives is that we have never stepped out to catch it. The power is up for grabs, but we need to step out in courage to seize it. 21
God’s provision of the power of the Holy Spirit is like a blank check that is given to us. We need to cash it before we receive its value. However if we fold it nicely and keep it in our wallet for the rest of our lives, we will never receive the value. When you walk in the power of the Holy Spirit, every single day of your life will be exciting because every day, something happens that gives you the opportunity to see the outflow of that power.
Third Truth
‘Power’ – The Proof of Power of the Holy Spirit Before going into the proof of the power of the Holy Spirit, let us examine what this ‘power’ of the Holy Spirit is. Whenever the Bible uses the word ‘power’ throughout the New Testament, there are two words that describe it – ‘Exousia’ and ‘Dunamis’. ‘Exousia’ is where the word ‘exertion’ is derived from. It means the ‘exerting’ of this power. ‘Exousia’ is quite commonly used in the New Testament. John 1:12 says: to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. In the Greek text, the word ‘exousia’ is
22
translated as the word ‘right’. In some translations, the word ‘power’ is used instead of the word ‘right’. In other words, we have inherited the right or the power as children of God. But in Acts 1:8 – you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you – ‘exousia’ is not used for the word ‘power’. The word ‘dunamis’ is used instead. ‘Dunamis’ is from where we derived the word ‘dynamo’. It refers to the ability to use this power. So while ‘exousia’ deals with the rights to wield this power, ‘dunamis’ deals with the ability to act. So what is this proof of the power of the Holy Spirit? The proof of the Holy Spirit’s power is essentially two things: 1) The power of transformation. 2) The power to witness. The power of transformation The proof of the power of the Holy Spirit is seen when He comes into your life and causes you to become somebody better than yourself. In our own ability as humans, we have our shortcomings and are naturally frail. So we would not be able to surpass trials to be victorious. But when the Holy Spirit’s power comes into our lives, the spirit of God gives us the ability to be victorious, to be a conqueror, to be an overcomer. The power of the Holy Spirit gives us the power to be.
If we examine the disciples in the earlier chapters, we see a ragtag band, afraid for their own lives. However, as soon as they were baptized in power of the Holy Spirit in Acts 2, they were transformed. Instantaneously, Peter, who was a coward, stood up and preached a great message where many were saved.
Every child of God at salvation has the Holy Spirit in their life. But we all need the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. That is why Jesus said to the disciples in Luke 24:49, “You have to stay in Jerusalem until you receive power.” Every child of God needs this power to walk victoriously in their lives.
This transformational power of the Holy Spirit causes you to become a better person. With that, you experience victory and walk in success. The transformational power of the Holy Spirit adds to you a dimension of life that you do not have and it causes you to have an added ability.
Therefore, the transformation in our lives eventually becomes a great testimony for the glory of God – proof of the power of the Holy Spirit.
For example, it is seen in Acts 2:4 when the disciples started speaking in tongues. When the power of the Holy Spirit came upon the Upper Room, it not only transformed them into courageous, victorious, overcoming men and women, it also caused them to speak in a tongue that they had not learnt before. The transformational power also convicts us of our sins. As the Holy Spirit convicts us, we start to align our thoughts and our beliefs with Him and our characters get transformed for the better in the process. John 16:13 tells us that when the Holy Spirit comes, He comes to guide us into all truth. When led by the Holy Spirit into all truth, we will have success.
The Power to Witness, the Power of Testimony The power of the Holy Spirit not only transforms you, it gives you the power of testimony. Note that in Acts 1:8, Jesus first makes the promise that we will receive the power of the Holy Spirit and that it will be provided for us. Then He says, “You will be my witnesses.” Now this word ‘witness’ is actually a judicial term in a court of law. When you are subpoenaed by the court to go and be a witness, you tell what you have seen and heard firsthand. When we become a witness for God, it becomes proof of the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus understood that the disciples, given their human nature, would be too afraid for their own
23
lives and would not be able to witness for Him. But when the Holy Spirit came upon them, they would become His witnesses. How many people today would listen to an ordinary person who has failed? Not many. What about someone who is successful and has a great experience of a failure turning into a success? You will listen to them because they have become an authority. They have witnessed something in their life and now they have the ability to speak and testify about it. Jesus knew that no one would listen to the disciples unless something happened in their lives. Unless God’s power of the Holy Spirit was in them, they would not be able to witness for Him and they, in turn, would not be authentic Christians. In the same way, there is no way you and I can witness for our Lord Jesus Christ unless we live authentic Christian lives. The power of the Holy Spirit gives us the power to be transformed so that there will be a power of testimony which is very important in our lives. In 1 John 4:4 we are told: Greater is He that is in you then he that is in the world. The power of the Holy Spirit empowers us so that the devil does not enter and wreck havoc in our lives. How can
24
we become a testimony of God’s success and God’s victory if our families live in shambles or our work and spiritual lives are in chaos because of the enemy? We all need the power of the Holy Spirit to come into our lives, transform us to be the very man or woman God wants us to be. To live a fulfilled, abundant life which experiences the victories in God so that we become a witness to His blessings for others to see and feel and say that our God is real! Christ is real. The Christian life is authentic. As part of the Church today, we need to be living proof of God’s power of the Holy Spirit. It is important for us to capture the truth of power of the Holy Spirit – the power to transform and the power to witness for God.
Fourth Truth
“In Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” – The Positioning Influence of the Power of the Holy Spirit Finally, the power of the Holy Spirit gives you the position to influence.
Looking at Acts 1:8 again – But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. We need to look at this geographically. Jesus promises us the power of the Holy Spirit, that He will provide it for us through His grace, and our lives will be transformed so that we become witnesses for Him. Then, He says that from Jerusalem, the power of the Holy Spirit will spread to all of Judea, into Samaria and then into the ends of the earth. This is essentially the Power of the Holy Spirit positioning us to influence. In other words, it positions us to evangelize. When you and I walk in the power of the Holy Spirit, there will be transformation and success. Transformation will take place in our homes, business, careers because God gives us the power to do so. We will become very successful in Him because the transformation power of God adds value into our lives.
With the power of the Holy Spirit invested in you, God is about to position you with ever-increasing influence. Without the manifestation of the Spirit in our lives, we are nothing. God has made us a promise. He has made the provision. You just need to step out in courage and seize it, so that its power manifests to become a testimony. When the testimony comes, the positioning comes. If your Christian walk is one where you feel weary, weak and defeated – remember “But you will receive power”. God has promised and provided the power to breakthrough. Let God empower you so that you can live a strong, successful and victorious Christian life that will testify to His great power. Take courage! Step out and seize the power of the Holy Spirit. Go forth and be a great witness of God’s power to the world! Let us embrace the power of the Holy Spirit today. T
As a result, we become a testimony of God’s grace, provision and blessing. When that happens, we impact our world. It no longer remains a personal impact or blessing. It grows to become a communal, then a national, and eventually, a global impact and blessing.

To fulfill God’s vision for our church, it takes every part of the body of Christ to unite and play their part. This vision month, we honor Trinitarians who have taken courage, beyond their inadequacies and inconveniences to lead and to serve. Trinitarians, your faith and courage have impacted many lives and set a lasting legacy in motion.

Thank You
r u o Y r o F To Lead To step up as a carecell leader while juggling four children; minister to your carecell member in the wee hours of the night at a funeral; believe and pray for your carecell even though attendance is dwindling. Sounds too good to be true? Hear from Trinitarians who have been blessed by their leaders who served with courage.
28
A few years back, my carecell went through a tough time with only three to four members. I was also struggling with my inadequacies as a leader. My SLs had the courage to keep believing in this ‘dying’ carecell. They demonstrated great faith in me and continued to encourage and mentor me. With their prayers and support, I grew spiritually and my carecell expanded four times! To my SLs: Thank you for your relentless belief in me. Michelle Chia, West District
We appreciate our SL for availing himself beyond his comfort zone to inspire all of us to follow. On top of balancing his young children, work and supporting his wife who is a full-time pastor, he still took up the role as our SL. He never boasts nor complains, but always imparts God’s wisdom cheerfully and steadily. We are very blessed by his insightful teachings and his courage to avail himself to serve. Randy Ng and Charmaine Khaw, North District
When my carecell leader was asked to assume the role, he struggled to accept it because of his personal plans and dreams. Nevertheless, he stepped up in courage and faith to serve us, trusting that God will fulfill his plans and dreams in His perfect timing. He has become an inspiration to many of us. Jessie Chew, East District
My carecell leader is a man of great faith and prayer. There were times when he stepped to pray for every member in the carecell and once, my heart was blessed as he prayed for me in accordance to what God wanted to say to me. To my carecell leader: Thank you praying for each of us in faith. Christina Leong, North District
Both my associate leaders took a bold step of faith and obedience when they decided to lead our carecell after graduating from the Spiritual Parenting class. I see a genuine desire for Christ in their personal lives and am inspired by their faith to serve God in greater capacity. Their relationship with the carecell has become very close since then. Cheang Ka Man, South District
My carecell leader is one who constantly depends on God in her leadership. Despite being inexperienced and having a hectic academic schedule, she steps out in faith to lead the cell and trusts God to provide for her inadequacies and needs. She is doing a great job! Her leadership has taught me to trust God in leading His people and having courage to make tough and strict but necessary decisions. Poon Chong Lin, Campus District

, t c e f r e P “ s i Do I e f i L Need God? What is success in life measured by? Is it possible to have it all yet not be successful? Investment Bankers, Eugene, 35, and Sarah, 32, had it all, or so it seemed. Sharon Lim finds out how God led them to find true meaning in their lives. 36

> REAL LIFE MIRACLE
Humble Beginnings
God’s Divine Favor
Eugene:
Sarah:
I grew up in a missionary school where I heard about the existence of a God and a man called Jesus. I never gave much thought to it, but I enjoyed reading the Bible.
In July 2002, the year I was graduating, there was a financial crisis and it was very difficult to get jobs in the finance or consulting industries. Some students even had their offers rescinded upon graduation. I did an internship with an investment bank in Hong Kong in my junior year. The bank gave out offer letters shortly after the internship ended but were silent on mine. I prayed to God and begged for a job.
In May 1998, towards the end of my National Service, a friend invited me to a service in a small family church. When I attended the service I felt an overpowering presence. I heard an audible voice saying to me, “You know who I am.Yet why do you still deny Me?” Immediately after, the pastor said that he sensed someone present that needed to receive Jesus Christ. From then on I accepted Jesus Christ into my life. I grew and served God fervently during my campus days. I was part of the worship team, a youth zone leader as well as part of The Navigators (a Christian ministry) on campus.
Sarah: Like Eugene, I was exposed to Christianity at a young age through Sunday school. I thought I knew God but in reality I did not have a personal relationship with Him. It was only during my school days that I grew in my faith and started to know God more. There was a time in secondary school where my Christian faith started to wane. I got caught up with studying and participating in extra-curricular activities to ensure that I was an all-round achiever. But God brought a teacher into my life who re-introduced Christ to me and I realized that I needed to put God first again. During my university days in the US, God placed strong Christians around me that infected me with a passion and love for God. I was a committed member in the Christian Fellowship and that caused my love and faith in God to be strengthened.
38
Days and weeks went by and soon a month had passed. I was not hopeful anymore. I guess God had His own plans to make things special. A few days later on my birthday, I was offered a job by the management of the bank that I had applied for. He actually flew all the way from Hong Kong to the US to tell me that I got the job! I knew it must have been God for it was way beyond the job-offer period. I was ecstatic and ready to give my all to my job!
Eugene: I started my banking career in March 2004. An opportunity in investment banking came up. It was very, very attractive at that point in time because it was the kind of career that every graduate really wanted to have. It must have been God’s favor. A prestigious banking position - who would turn that down?
Sarah: Investment banking really pays a lot, and one is given the opportunity to work with the senior management of large corporations. When you are fresh out of college, the job may be seen as empowering. I think that’s why a lot of people like it, despite the fact that there’s no work-life balance whatsoever. You basically sell your soul to the bank.
Eugene: I chose that path and stayed with that bank for almost six years before moving on to another bank for another two years.
Building Careers Sarah: During my time as an analyst in the bank, work would start at 8.30am and end near 2am almost every day for three to four years. I simply had no time for God. All that love and commitment for God in my campus days just faded away in the background. Work became my priority. I put in a lot of effort to earn my ranks and it was really all too good. It was a high-paying job and year after year I gained satisfaction through being ranked near the top, if not the top during my reviews. Even through three financial crises where many in the industry were laid off, I stayed on and even got promoted. I became vice-president in the first six years of my career.
Eugene: If people were to ask me if I believed in God then, I would say yes. In fact I started attending Trinity Christian Centre at that time as well. I had heard people around me talk about Trinity being a “large charismatic church”. Since I stayed nearby, I came down to visit and eventually joined the church.
I worked really, really hard, especially when I was in a more junior position. Everyday I was in the office till at least 2am, and I had to be back in the office the next day no later than 9.30am. There were times when I had to work more than 24 hours straight without any sleep! On weekends there was only time for service, and attending cell was a luxury. I remember telling God that I would only do the bare minimum. If He really wanted me to serve Him then He had to exhaust everyone else around me till there was no one left to serve Him. At that point, I was determined to be the best investment banker that I could be. I knew the Word well, so I even justified my career pursuit by stating that since God opened a door for me in this arena, I should be the best I could be in my career. Serving Him just had to wait, I told myself that it was not the season for me to serve Him.
But you could say I was just trying to do the “basic requirement” to stay a Christian. What I was really seeking then was the prominence of a top career as an investment banker. Serving God became less of a priority in my life as I strived to build a strong career.

> REAL LIFE MIRACLE
Budding Relationships Eugene: We were both high achievers in our jobs and with promising careers already in our bags, I guess it would have been great to have a partner in life as well. And despite God taking a lower priority than my career, I still wanted a Christian wife – a Proverbs 31 woman. After all I needed a strong independent lady to help me further my career.
as a couple. God was still in the backseat of our lives.
Sarah:
The interesting thing is that even though I was not on fire for God, I wanted a good marriage. And I still wanted my marriage to be blessed by God. It was like I subconsciously used God’s Word to justify what I wanted, not what He wanted for me. And God, by His grace, still continued to bless us in many areas of our lives.
I met Eugene when I was still working in Hong Kong. And he was in Singapore.
Eugene: It was pretty divine. We were doing totally different things, and the chance of interaction was almost zero. But we got to know each other through a client and it was almost like a match made in heaven.
Sarah: I knew the guy I wanted. He had to be a Christian. I guess the early foundations of Christian living formed my expectations of the perfect guy. He also had to be extremely smart and intelligent, and extremely loving and patient. And Eugene was just that kind of guy. No vices, just a really good man to be with.
Eugene: She had to be caring and have a big heart to help people. Sarah was all that and she was beautiful too! God was definitely involved in our lives at that time. We were enjoying the blessings of success in both our careers and in our personal lives. We settled down in 2008.
Sarah: After being married, life at work was pretty much the same. We continued our pursuit of securing our love nest and building our new life together
40
Carecell was not our priority, and serving God was definitely long forgotten. Our lives revolved around the demands of our careers.
Eugene:
My relationship with God was really one of convenience.
A Problem Money Could Not Solve Sarah: In March 2009, a year after we got married, I noticed I started bruising very easily. I got paranoid and saw a hematologist. He did a blood test and discovered that I had a very low platelet count. A normal person’s platelet count would range from 150,000 to 450,000 per micro-liter of blood, but mine was as low as 27,000. Anything below 30,000 is severe and one can spontaneously bleed internally and die. At my lowest platelet count it fell to below 5,000. (Staying alive must have been a miracle by itself) The doctors diagnosed that I was suffering from an auto-immune disease called Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP). Given that it is an auto-immune disease, there was no cure. I was placed on all types of medication in the hope that somehow, the body could right itself. It was a very difficult period as I was basically trying different forms of medication, ranging from steroids to chemotherapy-based drugs. There were different side effects to deal with such as pimple breakouts and hair loss, but the most despondent thing was that none of the medication worked. I was deemed to be in the minority that did not respond to medication.
Eugene: It was a very frustrating time for both of us. I remembered asking God why He let this happen, especially at a point in time when we were planning to start a family. What happened to all our blessings? It was frustrating seeing the doctors experimenting on her - trying different permutations and quantities of medication. Then
they told us if none of the medication worked, one final option was to remove her spleen. The doctors advised that this method generally worked, but there was a good chance that another organ in the body, like the liver, could take over the role of destroying the platelets. If that happened, Sarah would be left without a healthy spleen, and the ITP would still there. Moreover, as the spleen produces certain antibodies that protect the body against certain diseases, not having the spleen meant that Sarah would be susceptible to these diseases and would have to undergo life-long vaccination.
Sarah: During the weekends at service, we would find ourselves at the altar, seeking and praying for a miracle.
Eugene: At one altar call, Pastor Leslie prayed for us and encouraged us. Realizing that he used to be in the banking industry, we felt that he could relate to us. He cared and connected with us, ministering to us along with his wife. They were the lamps in our darkness. They were a familiar touch of God’s love in a community of believers. We shifted to our new home in Bishan and Pastor Leslie helped us to be connected to a carecell. However, our “spots” did not change overnight. Edwin, then our carecell leader, was trying to connect with us for over a period of 6 months but to no avail. We were probably the hardest new members to be contacted and connected. After all Sarah was still battling her illness.
41
> REAL LIFE MIRACLE
Open Hearts, Open Home Sarah:
In December 2009, the carecell invited us for a Christmas Party. Somehow our schedules were free so we turned up and for the first time we met everyone in the carecell. During the party, they were talking about needing a permanent home for their carecell. It was interesting but I told Eugene we needed to open our house for this carecell. I do not know how to explain but we felt happy to be able to serve God again.
Eugene:
We no longer had an excuse for missing carecell. It was held in our house. Preparing the house, hosting the carecell and having fellowship filled a void in our lives. We felt purpose and meaning returning into our lives. We now had a warm joy in our hearts that our successful careers did not ever satisfy.
Still Battling Illness Eugene:
It was very difficult for us. Every other month her platelet count would drop and she would have to be admitted to the hospital for days for blood transfusion. We did not understand why we had to go through this at all. But God is faithful and He spoke to
42
me clearly through John 9:3. When asked for the reasons why a man was born blind, Jesus responded that it “happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life”. This changed my perspective on Sarah’s illness completely as I began to realize that God is in complete control of the situation and He will glorify Himself in this trial. We began to realize that we should no longer be fixated on the ITP, on the platelet count but on the miracle healing. All we need to do is look at God. We were convicted, and we chose to believe.
Sarah:
In December 2009 I told the doctors I didn’t want any more medication, as I believed that God will deliver. I took a sabbatical from work for six months. During that time I focused on God.There were many down moments at that time, but I knew God was still in control. I was not arguing with God about why He was doing this to me, but more of, when can He heal me? Each time when I was at my lowest point, the weekend service messages would always feel like it was for me, reassuring me that God was there, and that He would do it in His own time.
A New Life Sarah:
After stopping all medication, I had to visit the doctor regularly for blood tests and whenever my platelet levels dropped too low, I would have to undergo a 2-day intravenous immunoglobulin infusion - a treatment to temporarily boost my platelet levels. This infusion is costly, temporary and would initially last for about a month each time. It is not seen as an advisable long term solution for ITP.
back to normal without any form of treatment. Young children who are diagnosed with ITP would typically revert back to normal after a while. But for adults, highly unlikely! He even jokingly mentioned that he will now send his ITP patients to Trinity! God, in His faithfulness and grace, has blessed us with a miracle and a powerful testimony.
Things started to change in 2011 when the time period between the infusion started to lengthen from a month to two, three and eventually about six. I remembered that in December 2011, that was the last transfusion I ever had to go through.
New Hunger & Discontentment
In January 2012, I went for my regular blood test, but this time things were different. The platelet count was back to the normal range - above 200,000! It lasted through February, March, April, etc.. God never disappointed. My platelet level increased every month since then.
Eugene:
Yes, the doctor was initially skeptical. He even suspected that Sarah took some form of medication on her own accord. The doctor said, “This cannot be.” But we believed and said, “It is God.” The doctor told us that Sarah’s platelet count would need to remain normal for a period of six months before he can declare that Sarah’s illness is in complete remission. At that point, even though we had to wait six months, we knew in our hearts that God had delivered us; that God has brought to pass the promised healing. Our faith grew tremendously. Since then, the platelet count remained in the normal range. In fact, the last count in June 2012 was over 300,000 and Sarah was medically proclaimed as healed! The doctor said that in his 50 odd years of medical career he has never seen any instance of the platelet count of an adult patient going
Eugene:
In the early part of 2012, there was much discontentment in my spirit. I felt dry and was in need of refreshing. I told God that I wanted more of Him and I no longer wanted things to be the same as before. During the 2011 Watchnight service, Pastor Dominic exhorted us to step out in apostolic faith in 2012.That message really spoke to me as I sensed the call of God for me to consecrate myself for His purposes. I told God, “God I want to serve You in a totally different way, like never before.” When I cried out to Him, God pointed me to AlphaTrack. I prayed about it and consulted Sarah. I was convicted at that point in time, but I still had concerns. I asked God, “God You know I’m really discontented, what should I do?” He spoke to me through Matthew 5:6 – Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Then I asked God again, But God if take a threemonth no pay leave, they may just ask me to leave the bank. God pointed me to Matthew 6. Do not worry. If God clothes the lilies and feeds the birds why should I worry? 43
> REAL LIFE MIRACLE
The Transformation Eugene: And I told God, “After AlphaTrack then what? I don’t want to go back to that old life, but I don’t know where I’m going.” And God told me to hold on to Jeremiah 29:11. “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” God further assured me through Joshua 3:5, Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do amazing things among you. I’ve always had an issue with trusting God completely. I needed to see, needed to know the grand plan. But God answered all my questions clearly so there was really no excuse. I knew by the end of that encounter with God that this is something God wants me to do and all I had to do was to obey. I took courage and spoke to my bosses about wanting to attend AlphaTrack, and was ready to quit if the response was a ‘No’. Surprisingly, my bosses were both supportive! One boss said, “I can see where you’re going with this. In the entire office you’re the one who really showed your faith. Go do what you need to do and come back.” So, I attended AlphaTrack and those 90 days truly changed my life.
44
The step I took in joining AlphaTrack is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. God showed me that I was made to serve Him and restored my passion for His Kingdom. Now my whole life is to serve God, full-time or in the marketplace.
Sarah:
Now, I’m more fervent about pursuing God, with a greater desire to spend time with God. Now God is priority in my life, and my career takes a back seat. In fact, I’ve changed my job to something less exciting which doesn’t pay as well but definitely gives me more time to spend with Him. God changed my heart as well. When I was busy working, my heart was hard. I would go to church, listen to the sermon, and there would be no impact on me. When I started growing in my relationship with God, my heart softened, it became fertile soil for His Word and I became more loving, more caring and a better person. Now I ask God to give me more love and compassion for the lost, because I know that on my own, I will not be able to do it. I know that God will bring about that transformation of my heart. More than my miraculous healing, the biggest miracle is how God has allowed us to be fulfilled in Him.
Life Redefined Sarah:
I used to be in the position where career, prominence and money were my priority in life, and unfortunately when I was there I wouldn’t really listen to wellmeaning advice. Serving God was something really challenging, because the apparent success in my earthly life was hindering me to do that. But life is not just about your career or how much money you earn. One sermon that still speaks to me now is about leaving a lasting legacy - how do you want someone to remember you at your funeral? Do you want the person to only speak about what a great achiever you were – how much money you made? Or do you want to be remembered for how you impacted someone’s life for the better? I choose the latter. You don’t want something to happen to you before you stop and take a second look and re-adjust. You need to know that God is really the center of your life and you need to trust Him to lead you.
Eugene:
Looking back at the past seven to nine years, my main regret was failing to serve God in my true capacity. Don’t be like me. When you pursue a career, you’re pursuing things that the world puts in front of you. You think they will satisfy you. They never will. You do not need to be successful in your career before you can serve God. God is a God of plenty. He will provide for your needs when you seek Him first. So, from the start of your career to eventually reaching this realization, how much time would you have wasted not serving God but chasing after a worldly career? It is one thing to know God. It is another to pursue Him. It is difficult to make the decision to run after God’s purpose. So we ask God to convict us.You really have to trust God, and seek God for that purpose when He has for your life. Trust Him to bring that into fulfillment. T
Section Leader Edwin Ho shares about the couple’s transformation: Eugene and Sarah were successful and very busy people. It took months since the first contact before they joined LIFE carecell. Now, Eugene is a model in praying and seeking God daily despite his busy career. He has relentless belief in the carecell members, going all out to encourage them when they face difficulties in life. Sarah is now a woman with audacious fervor and is committed to encourage many in the carecell. It is really heartening to see the both of them availing themselves to serve various ones in the carecell. Both Eugene and Sarah are growing a lasting legacy with their lives. The carecell has seen many spiritual babies growing strong in their faith due to both of them stepping out in faith to serve. If you want to know this God, take this moment to say this prayer. “Dear God, please forgive me of all my sins. I believe Jesus died on the cross for me and rose again. Please come into my life and be my Lord and Savior. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.” If you have said this prayer, we would like to help you to know God more. 30 WAYS TO CARE AND CONNECT Evangelism, sharing the gospel – The mention of these things can cause uneasiness, palpitating heartbeats and knotted tongues. Fret not! Gabriel Chu shares ideas on how to care and connect with pre-believers.
W
here do I start? Is it the right time? Some of us may have these thoughts when it comes to caring and connecting with pre-believers. But why is it so easy for some to share the word of God?
46
With proper preparation and training, both you and I will be able to care and connect in our own special ways. Like a sporting match, the athletes begin with warm ups, then execute strategies in the game to shoot for the goal.
1) Grow spiritually. Read the Bible and attend LEAD courses. Be strong in your relationship with God. 2) Pray. Ask God for His help and wisdom to share Christ with your friends and loved ones. 3) Be bold. As God’s warrior, take bold steps of faith. Say ‘hi’ and smile to at least 10 people every day. 4) Up your sensitivity. Be aware of people’s feelings. Seize every opportunity to minister to them.
WARM UP
Here are the basics.
5) Be a good help. At home, offer to help in household chores. At work, go beyond your job scope and help those needing an extra hand. 6) Address character flaws. Character weaknesses such as anger, gossiping and laziness are not good testimonies. Manage these flaws. 7) Be a good testimony. You are Christ’s ambassador. Show the fruit of the Spirit, such as love, kindness and self-control. 8) Show forth joy. Jesus’ gift of salvation, love and grace are more than sufficient reasons to have a heart of thanksgiving and joy every day. 9) Believe the gospel is truly good news. When you hear of a great bargain, you tell everyone you meet. Similarly, you will be passionate to share the gospel if you truly believe that it is good news.
47
THE MATCH BEGINS!
It’s time for action – focus on caring and loving. 10) Be generous. It does not have to be monetary; you can be generous with words of encouragement or give someone a pat on the back. 11) Find out about them. We have a tendency to talk about ourselves more than listening to others. Find out more about them. E.g. interests and goals. 12) Accompany your friend. Offer to accompany your friends on their errands. E.g. if they are visiting a loved one in hospital, offer them a lift or go with them. 13) Encouragement. Offer positive words to those who are going through a tough time and compliment those who overcame obstacles. 14) Lend a listening ear. A friend in need is a friend indeed. Sharing problems deepen the relationship. 15) Pray with them. Find a need and meet the need by praying together with them. 16) Fellowship with them. Don’t miss those lunch opportunities to fellowship! You can also form parents/examinations support groups where you can share tips and help each other. 17) Have fun. Visit nature reserves around the island. Go-karts at Jurong or kite- flying at Marina Barrage are options for the young at heart. 18) Celebrate festivals. Be it Christmas, Chinese New Year or the National Day holiday, you can always celebrate with your friends. 19) Everyone loves food. Organize joint-cooking sessions, share recipes or attend cooking lessons together. 20) Cell-socials. Invite your oikos for your cell-socials. E.g. game night or pizza night. 21) Road trip. Plan a road trip to Malaysia. You don’t have to drive. Even taking the bus would be great time to bond with your oikos.
48
22) Share the Bible with them. Share Bible character traits and verses that can be applied in everyday living. 23) Share your life story. Nothing beats a personal, first hand testimony. 24) Share others’ testimonies. Tell them how God has worked in the lives of various ones. 25) Pass them the Trinitarian magazine. Show them the Trinitarian Experience – life-changing testimonies, fun church activities and Bible messages in the magazine. 26) Invite them to cell meetings. Get your cell members to share their testimonies. 27) Invite them to church events. Powerful preaching series, special guest speakers, parents’ day, Christmas presentations etc. Let them encounter God. 28) Invite them for life-skills seminars. These seminars are conducted by professionals that will bless them in areas of work and family life. 29) Share the gospel. Eventually, you need to just do it. Remember the simple ABCs: Acknowledge you are a sinner, Believe that Jesus died for your sins, and Confess that Jesus is Lord of your life. 30) Do it repeatedly. A survey showed that a person hears the gospel 7.6 times before receiving Christ. So persevere! Invite them back and continue to share your testimony with them.
SHOOT FOR THE GOAL!
Muster up courage to invite your friends and loved ones to be part of Christ and Trinity’s family.

Mongolia
The First Foray
Mongolia, a land famed for its legacy of tenacious horseback warriors, notably Genghis Khan and its distinct nomadic culture, received Trinity Christian Centre’s first Missions Impact Team (MIT) in June 2012. Ivan Koh finds out more.
12
Trinitarians answered the call to go to Mongolia to preach the gospel and minister to the people of that land. They traveled day and night just to get there. The eight-hour flight was smooth-sailing, but the remaining 18 hours by road – not quite. The van they took had two tire punctures, an engine failure and finally even got stuck in a river. Despite their arduous journey there, nothing deterred this courageous team from traveling to two provinces and ministering at six different churches. They touched more than 200 lives with over 50 salvations, just in a span of seven days! It was raining when the team arrived. To Mongolians, rain is perceived as a blessing.
50
It was a sign of coming revival, and that God is pouring out His blessings. Many who have joined MITs will testify that they who set out to make a difference in others’ lives, return blessed in greater measures. Tay Hing Heng, a consultant, who plans to be part of one or two MIT trips annually, shares how impacted he was when he saw how fervent the Mongolian church was in their prayer. “The church they ministered at had only about 50 people,” he recalls, “Yet more than half the church turned up at 5am for prayer meetings. The temperatures were a freezing 6°C!” The prayer meetings were powerful encounters for the entire team, where every believer, Singaporean and Mongolian came together in unity to pray for the younger generation of Mongolia.
“I have learnt that I do not need to be a mature Christian to pray for others,” shares team member Mabel Chay, personal assistant. Another team member, Jenny Su, an administrator, recalls how tangible God’s love was. Despite knowing only three words, “Hello”, “Thank you” and “Good Bye” in Mongolian, she was able to minister to the locals as God’s love transcended every cultural and language difference. In a children outreach program, after a simple skit and sharing, over 25 children committed their lives to Jesus! In another setting, team member Richard Fong, an IT officer, witnessed the power of the Holy Spirit physically tipping the bodies of four locals back and forth without them falling over. The locals were exceptionally touched by this tangible encounter and gave their lives to Jesus instantaneously. Were there physical challenges? “Of course!” exclaims Jenny as she shares how the toilets were literally everywhere. The “job” could be done at any time, right there in the vast open field surrounding them. Hing Heng also shares how it was incredibly cold sleeping in a “Mongolian tent”, the ‘Ger’. These small inconveniences aside, the team shared that they have grown to a new level of faith and spiritual intimacy through encounters with God and interaction with the local ministers in Mongolia. Richard recalls being most awed by the faithfulness, passion and fervor of the Mongolian Christians. He says, “Many of them go into full-time ministry, witnessing, evangelizing and missions work so early in their spiritual lives. The power of God we have witnessed working through them has been mind-blowing. I would join another MIT to Mongolia in an instant!”

Building Churches and Leaders around the World
Many church leaders all over the world are hungry to develop strong churches and raise harvest workers. Trinity is privileged to play a part in empowering leaders in these countries, including conducting a cell church consultation in Japan and running a Pastors’ Conference in Vietnam. Diana Lim reports.
I
t was our first time conducting training and consultation in Vietnam. More than 200 pastors and church leaders from the Assemblies of God Vietnam attended. It was encouraging to see many of these leaders who pastor churches with a congregation size of about 30-100 attend this conference. Many of them received an impartation of faith to transform and grow their church through developing leaders.
52
Further up north in Japan, another team met with close to 40 church leaders with the objective to empower them to grow their carecells. The leaders felt equipped to move their carecells from one stage to the next and are confident that multiplication can happen. It is awesome to see how they are being strengthened to impact and transform their community.

The second quarter of 2012 was a meaningful period for Trinity’s Missions’ department, as Trinitarians continued to support Missions actively through their giving, going and praying. By Ivan Koh. Updates from Apr-Jun
April to June 2012 was an exciting period for Trinity’s Missions. Amongst the different trips to the nations was the first Missions Impact Team (MIT) to the State of Mongolia. In Mongolia, members braved arduous journeying, language and cultural barriers and even fear of their own inabilities to reach out to schools, blessing children in the orphanage as well as ministering to the local churches. As the team served in the rural and urban areas, they were refreshed themselves. In Japan, the desire to rebuild nations continued with the sending of our second Missions Impact Team to Koriyama, Japan. The team held a kids festival and community projects in the land that was once ravaged by a massive earthquake, showcasing God’s love in a tangible way. In the training and consultation arena, Trinity’s pastors took the 7 Steps conferences to the lands of China and Romania. They also conducted training 54
for cell and other aspects in China, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Romania, Taiwan and Vietnam. Many pastors and leaders were greatly blessed by the training and practical equipping. Another key expression in wanting to raise a brand new generation, Trinity took up sponsorship of another 200 children from 3 feeding centers in India to ensure that their dietary needs are met. Trinity was also privileged to sow into a new generation of leaders through awarding of scholarships to a bible college in the Philippines. The 9 international students who received the scholarships came from different nations. Through this strategic investment, they would be empowered to be effective ambassadors for Christ and His Kingdom. As Trinitarians continued to give, go and pray, there is an anticipation of greater testimonies and harvest fields that will glorify God in the days to come.

SHAPING THE COUNSELING LANDSCAPE New and exciting times are ahead for the School of Counselling (SOC) at TCA College. The school’s dean, Rev Sam Kuna, shares how his new roles in the Singapore Association for Counselling (SAC) and the Asia Pacific Certification Board (APCB) will aid him in shaping the SOC to better equip counselors in our current, more complicated, counseling landscape. Miranda Zhang reports.
S
am Kuna is no stranger to the SAC. He has served in the roles of Assistant Secretary, President and Vice-President from 1998 till stepping down in 2005.
During his tenure of office and thereafter, many of the current standards of practice, code of ethics for Registered Counsellors and the standards for course recognition for training institutions were put in place.
56
This year, he has taken up new roles. He was elected as Treasurer of the SAC Executive Board and was also invited to sit on the Board of Directors of the APCB. The APCB is a multi-national body providing the structural framework in credentialing mental health professionals from the Asia-Pacific region. His passion to see the current standards of practice for counselors established and upheld over a wider circle of counseling practitioners remains strong. And he also hopes to see greater visibility and recognition of counselors in the very stressful and progressive society in Singapore.
You’ve had more than 20 years of counseling experience. Compared to the past, what types of problems do people face nowadays? Sam Kuna: The world is definitely much fasterpaced than before. Families, individuals, youths and children all face enormous stress, daily pressures, and high expectations. Marriages and relationships have taken on even more problems as a result of this ‘pressure cooker’ environment. Is there a problem that is more unique to our modern context? For example, there are increasing cases of women taking on the role of the breadwinner and their husbands staying at home as the homemaker. While it used to be more common among men to neglect their wives because of work, these cases of role reversal are becoming more common in our modern context. As much as there is nothing wrong with a woman earning more than a man, the more extreme cases have resulted in the woman neglecting their families and the affairs of the household. Globally, the dual income family is challenging the fabric of what we understood to be traditional family values and a safe family environment to bring up children. Many children in Singapore and globally are suffering from “Parent-Deprived Syndrome” where non-family members and trends are actually impacting their values and their lives, where previously it was the parents.
What do counselors need to be equipped with now that perhaps was not as pertinent in the past? To name a few, counselors need to be equipped to handle family and social dynamics that have grown more complex in our modern world. Following the advent of the Internet and social media, there is an explosion of varying world views. As a counselor, you need to be able to juggle these different schools of thought as you address people’s problems. Also, with the world getting smaller, one needs to be more sensitive to multi-cultural characteristics, like age, gender, race, culture, socio-economic status, as well as faith-spirituality issues. Congratulations on being elected into your new roles. How do you think these roles will help in where you intend to lead the SOC, TCA College? There is much work to be done. Through my involvement with SAC, I hope to engage, equip, impart and inspire our students in the SOC, TCA College, to excel in acquiring counseling skills, ethical practice and develop a passion for people in various sectors in the community. Our students can then easily fit in as professionals in organizations such as the family service and counseling centers, voluntary welfare and community service organizations, hospitals, institutions and even start a private practice.
57
I hope the counseling profession in Singapore will continue to grow and find its place in healing interpersonal and intrapersonal issues as well as family and social issues. Also, with the on-going social struggles with addiction to illegal drugs and substances, growing dependence on prescription drugs, alcoholism, gambling, gaming, pornography and sex addiction, more needs to be done in the area of addiction counseling in Singapore. Through my new role at APCB, I intend to develop specialized academic courses and seminars in addictions in the SOC at TCA College. These courses and seminars will be useful for the layperson as well as professionals. Overall, it has been my greatest joy to watch our SOC students start their journey with the passion to contribute to society and eventually emerging as professional counselors. Given these new developments, our main goals at SOC remain: • To raise professional counselors to serve in the community • To equip them with skills that they will hone as excellent practitioners • To impart a counseling practice that protects the dignity and choice of the client and embraces the highest ethical codes in their practice • To be sensitive to the multi-cultural aspect of practicing counseling in Singapore being sensitive to age, gender, race, culture, socio-economic status, as well as faithspirituality issues in every client

Signs and Wonders for Today?
Perspectives from Acts
There seems to be a pattern in the Book of Acts where God uses miracles to bring about conversions. Is there a connection between signs and wonders and the multitudes which are added to God’s Kingdom? Are signs and wonders normative for the church today? Do the people of God yearn for boldness in their witness and, do they desire for God to perform signs and wonders? In this seminar, we will explore the work of God in Acts, and reflect on signs and wonders as a witness to the gospel today.

enton is a mildly autistic 12 year-old boy. With the help of the teachers at CareHut, he learnt how to be independent and gained confidence in himself and his abilities. He made his mother proud when his dance group emerged as champions of the hip-hop competition conducted by his school. An ex-offender made a very positive turnaround after attending the Resettlement program with CCSS. Through this program, he became motivated to change his life. He is now holding a job and taking responsibility for his family. These are just two of the many stories of lives being turned around by CCSS programs. Trinity Christian Centre’s Senior Pastor Dominic Yeo, President of CCSS, shared these heartwarming testimonies of lives that have been transformed by CCSS during his address at the Charity Dinner. He urged all present to continue to give time and resources to those who need it. Performances filled with dancing and singing gave the night a celebratory atmosphere. Some of the beneficiaries of CCSS from Zhonghua CareHut, were amongst the performers. A charity auction of nine paintings was the night’s main highlight. The auction alone raised almost $7,000 for the night. Eight of the pieces were done by budding artists from Eunos CareHut and
the ninth painting, a masterpiece, was donated by local artist Ms Denise Jillian Tan. Guest of Honor Mr Michael Palmer, Speaker of Parliament, commended CCSS as “a very worthwhile cause to support, especially in the aspect of their work with the prison. It’s a tough job that not many would step up to, yet CCSS has gone the extra mile.” Mr Alex Tay, Regional Director of South Asia Dairy Farm Singapore (DFSG), also affirmed the partnership between DFSG and CCSS. He commented, “This [fund raising and support for charitable causes] is something that is very relevant to DFSG, especially with regards to our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Program and because of this, we do share a strong and good relationship with CCSS. The event today was well-organized and received.” Other notable guests of the night included Mrs Kay Iswaran, patron of CCSS and Rev Naomi Dowdy, founder of CCSS. Finally, the night closed with the announcement of the winners of the golf game. The winner for Men’s A Divison was Mr Jeffrey Sim and the Women’s Division was Ms Phan Fong Ying. It was truly a night celebrating how each one can make a difference in society.

More than 1,000 took time to seek God at the pray conference. Indeed, corporate, persistent and passionate prayer opens the floodgates of heaven. Rev David Doery unleashed God’s heart on prayer on Aug 30-31, 2012. God’s tangible presence invaded many hearts to a new level of hunger for prayer. Diana Lim reports.
64
During Prayer Rally, Pastor David mentioned that prayer is the engine room of the church. If the engine stops, it will lose its momentum, come to a stop and won’t move forward. It spurs me to pray for Trinity during my prayer time, for the church to continue moving to greater heights for God. At one of the sessions, during the time of simply quieting down, where other voices and concerns were diminished, I just lingered and soaked in God’s presence. It was a time of communion between God and me only and He touched my heart. It was so personal, so intimate. Ellen Ng, air force engineer The presence of God was so strong that I knew He was doing a great work in each and every life. The conference lifted me to a new spiritual level and spurred me to want to grow in my prayer life. Christopher Thia, marketing manager
The story of John Wesley’s mother praying daily amidst her busyness with 19 children reminded me that there is no excuse not to pray. If you are too busy to pray, you are too busy. This really convicted me to set a regular time of prayer and find a secret place to draw near to God. Laura Hoi, financial consultant
This conference gave me a paradigm shift – we don’t pray for God to answer our needs, we pray to draw closer to God and align ourselves to His purposes for us. It is more than just communication; it is really being in tune with Him and His plans – to be a prayer warrior for His Kingdom. Eunice Lee, studio director

I now truly understand the importance of standing in the gap in prayer for the leadership in church. The presence of God in the conference was very strong and touched me deeply. It convicted me to rise up and pray not only for the people around me, but also for the church and the nation. Wilson Chia, picture framer
When we pray, it may seem as if nothing is happening, but my spiritual being is actually being impacted. This changed the way I face my problems. They do not seem impossible to deal with anymore and I can now approach my problems with courage and peace. Dawn Kuah, webmaster
No words can describe the very moment when God came and touched me. In that divine moment, God understood my pains and took them away. The experience completely overturned my understanding of what prayer is. To encounter God and to commune with Him is the sweetest thing that has ever happened to me. It is beyond comprehension and yet within my reach by the grace of God. Sarah Lau, corporate communications executive
The presence of God in the conference calmed my spirit. The teaching has convicted me to have a consistent prayer life and be mindful of all the points in a prayer booster. I am confident that with God’s help and Pastor David’s teaching, my prayer life will be radically transformed. Danny Leong, director

UPSIZE is no longer just about the bigger portion of French Fries and Coke in Extra Value Meals from MacDonalds. Elane Luo reports.

hen a wacky bunch of people conjure team names such as ‘Dotzilla’, you know you are in for a camp packed with enjoyment, laughter and fun. At the compound of Trinity@Paya Lebar, the campers were allocated to different teams and tasked with looking after little fish. The aim of this special task was to teach the campers about the nurturing of lives given to their care. They also pitted their wits in a strategy game where they were to rescue their ‘captive’ team members. Games aside, the pastoral team comprising Pastor Edward, Pastor Janice, Pastor Joyce, Pastor Sabrina, Pastor Steven and Pastor Wendy, shared their valuable experience and wisdom through a series of workshops during the camp. Those who were unable to participate in the full three-day camp also benefitted from the night services that were incorporated into the camp.
As camper Joshua Sim puts it succinctly, “It was a fantastic decision to come for Camp UPSIZE. I learnt to grow a more intimate relationship with God, about hearing the voice of God and to dedicate myself to whatever He has called me to do.” Another excited camper Ronald Wong shares his breakthrough: “Through this camp, I realized that I had dug up my past, which resulted in a dam being built over the River of God that stopped new life from flowing. Now, I have a new experience with God. Thank God!” What a way for our campus students to have fellowship with God and with one another during the school term break!
Many campus students who attended the workshops and night service felt a strong conviction in their hearts to place God in the center and allow God to lead them in their career and vocation.

242 campus students came for Campus Ministry’s first large scale evangelistic event on Aug 10, 2012. There were 77 first time visitors and 10 decisions made for God. Chonglin and Guan Hua shares how God stirred their courage to boldly invite strangers to the event. Tabitha Ko reports.
70
Tabitha: Tell us about the friend you invited. Chonglin: We, Rachel, Ivan and myself, were at a cafe having our core group meeting when this guy came round looking for a seat to have his meal. We offered him a seat and started talking to him. He shared about his struggles in army and since More Than This (MTT) was coming up, we felt it was timely to invite him to the event. We gave him the invitation card and he agreed to come. Tabitha: Then he got saved through MTT? Chonglin: Yes, he was very open after we spoke to him at the cafe and he came. During the event he rededicated his life to God. We continued to pray with him in about his needs and thereafter, he has been attending service with us. Tabitha: What gave you guys the courage to invite him? Chonglin: He was the first guy that I had invited. It was really a divine opportunity because we were merely having a core group meeting and he was a stranger. I think what made me step out in boldness was hearing from God as we heard about his struggles and saw his needs. It was God’s grace that gave me the courage to steer the conversation to share Christ with him. Tabitha: What about your friend Pauline?
Guan Hua: I got to know Pauline recently at work. She was new on the job and so I decided to approach her and talk to her. I happened to have many of the MTT postcards in my bag, so I took a card out and invited her. To my surprise, she readily agreed even though I just met her for an hour. Tabitha: What gave you the courage to invite her? Guan Hua: I had no plans to invite someone I’ve met for only an hour but when I saw the postcard, I thought to myself, “Why not?” And God blew me away with her response – she agreed to come. Actually a few days before the event, God spoke to me and told me that she would accept Christ. I was quite surprised when I heard the voice but I now know that it was really God’s voice. And true enough on that day she went up for the altar call to receive salvation! Tabitha: So how has this whole experience about inviting someone and seeing that person get saved affect you? Guan Hua: It has really built a lot of faith in me. I now have the faith to believe that great things and miracles can happen when we put our trust in God.
More Facts…
1) The play was entirely written and produced by campus students 2) Originally, Theatrette 1 (T1) was booked for the event but the committee, being full of faith from their Campus Camp Upsize, upsized to Theatrette 2 (T2) – larger than T1. God filled T2!

Gifts from the Heart On Aug 8, 2012, 42 youths from Trinity’s IGNYTE and D’Artistes brought the house down with the Charity Concert 2012 – Metamorphosis III: Simple Gifts which raised a total of $236,775 for children in financial difficulty. Their performance ended with a roaring standing ovation from an audience of 3,000. Sharon Lim shares about this exhilarating night to remember.

T
his gift is anything but simple.
It took three months of grueling dance practice, countless hours of building the life-sized bookshelf backdrop and tailoring the psychedelic costumes to make this year’s charity concert, Metamorphosis III: Simple Gifts possible. 20 dancers from Trinity’s youth ministry IGNYTE, 22 dancers from D’Artistes - many of whom have intellectual disabilities - and more than 40 crew members in the production team staged a sold-out dance performance to a 3,000-strong audience in the Sanctuary. Their mission: To contribute to their generation by raising funds for children in financial difficulty. D’Artistes kid Kuoo Shiauw Lun, who has Down Syndrome, says,“This is my third Metamorphosis concert and I have grown in my strong passion for dance.” Our very own youths from IGNYTE, despite their busy work schedules, chose to put their precious time and effort into this concert. “I feel great that I get this chance to perform with the special kids.We have a lot more to learn from them than they from us,” shares Reuben Chong, from IGNYTE.
“It was a wonderful experience,” says Joshua Chong, also from IGNYTE, “This event taught me many life values beyond dance. Practices were not easy, but when I saw how the children with special needs made every effort to be in step, I was deeply moved.” From worship songs to heart-thumping hip hop and pop tunes; the dancers leapt, twirled, and somersaulted for two hours straight receiving a well-deserved standing ovation at the end of the performance. “Those with special needs are the sons and daughters of Singapore. What a great way to honor them this National Day with this concert,” says Guest of Honor Ms Denise Phua, MP for Moulmein-Kallang GRC, “As an advocate for the special needs community, I believe all Singaporeans able or less able, rich or poor, young or old are part of our Singapore family. “They should be seen, heard and valued. All deserve access to quality education, employment, healthcare, public facilities, and friendships. I applaud Trinity Christian Centre and D’Artistes for organizing this evening’s Charity Concert. I thank them for this special act of love.”
73
Trinity Christian Centre raised a grand total of $236,775 in support of The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund (SPMF) and D’Artistes. This gift from donors and corporate sponsors echoes beautifully the gift of time, talent and energy that the dancers and crew have sown into. “The concept of this concert is wonderful – the D’Artistes children and Trinity youths wanting to do their part for their generation,” says Mr Gerard Ee, Board Member of SPMF, “In our community we all have to do our part, so we help one another. In this case, it is wonderful that D’Artistes, being the beneficiaries, now want to give back to society through this concert with their time and energy.”

Our Senior Pastor Dominic Yeo also shared how proud he was of the crew and how significant their simple gift was. He said in his speech, “This simple gift represents their courage to step forth to be a blessing to their generation; their determination to overcome any obstacle before them; and their love for others, to give of what they have to bless those around them.” He urged that we should continue to do our part to reach out to the community. “As Singapore’s society grows more affluent,” he said, “Many people still live below the poverty line. At Trinity, we believe that we can all do our part to reach out and be a blessing to the needy in our community.”

The Beneficiaries The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund (SPMF) started as a community project in 2000 by The Straits Times that provide pocket money to children from low income families in Singapore to help them through school. SPMF is governed by a board of trustees and received our charity status in October 2011 and has been an Institution of a Public Character (IPC) since January 2012. Funds raised go toward school pocket money disbursements and support of social and educational development of the children and youth. SPMF supports an average of 10,000 cases of children and youth yearly that come from lowincome families with net per capita income of not more than $450.
D’Artistes is a registered non-profit IPC-based volunteer group formed in 2005 and manned by a group of volunteer parents with special needs children. It is focused on running activities, especially in the performing arts, for the benefit of children with Down Syndrome, autism and intellectual disabilities. These activities give them the opportunity to interact with mainstream children so that they can better integrate into society.

nity attracts the presence of God. Humility pleases the heart of God. Prayer moves the hand of God.
1,800 youths from churches all over Singapore gathered at Trinity@Paya Lebar to make history. They prayed, they worshipped and they experienced divine breakthroughs. God’s presence was real and tangible that night. Many testified of their powerful worship encounters with God that led to youths returning to their First Love and restoring Him as the priority in their lives.
76
GDOP was a great time of worship, prayer and encountering God. It was also exciting to see youths from different churches coming together for the same purpose. I am extremely blessed by the whole experience and I look forward to what God has in store for my generation. Esther Loh, 14 During GDOP, I felt God’s presence very strongly. I was in the heart of worship and the atmosphere was amplified with the gathering of God’s family. I experienced a revival in prayer that night. Megumi Chua, 14 Before GDOP, I struggled to worship God. However, I was deeply impacted at the session when God showed me that I can worship him regardless of the situation I am in. I have learnt that it is only through yielding my heart and repenting of my sins that I can worship Him freely in spirit and in truth. Vanessa Lim, 14
AG YOUTH RALLY I thank God for my friend’s salvation. God prompted me to invite Ryan, who used to be a bully and an anti-Christ. I prayed for courage and God’s favor as I invited him to the AG Youth Rally. When the altar call was given, I took courage and asked him if he wanted to accept God and he said yes! All Glory to God! Saw Sing Yee I noticed my classmate Joel was looking amiss, and he shared how he felt as though life had become a routine – void of meaning and purpose. When the AG Youth Rally drew nearer, I showed him a video of John Pritikin and asked if he wanted to come. Even though he had tuition on the day of the event, he came! That day he re-dedicated his life to Jesus! And he now lives a purposeful and meaningful life! David Soo
On Jul 27, 2012, 650 youths from the Assemblies of God (AG) churches in Singapore gathered at Trinity@Paya Lebar for the AG Youth Rally. On top of his amazing feats, Guinness World Records holder John Pritikin shared how God had transformed his life. There were a total of 58 decisions for God that evening. Diana Lim reports how God is moving amongst the youths in our nation and how youths are rising to win their generation and open their hearts to receive Him. 1

Potential to Fulfillment Jun 7, 2012 marked the launch of Senior Pastor Dominic Yeo’s first book. A book birthed from his life message, he desires it to enable Christians to walk victoriously in God’s design for their lives. Here are some of the takeaways from readers. A friend gave me a copy which I finished reading over the weekend. The book helped me realize why I felt I had no purpose and direction. I am now taking time to read it slowly to glean even more insights from it. Loh Kin Poh, remisier

Through this book, I discovered that in order to experience God’s full potential for my life, I need to love God with all my being, and to love others. It dawned on me that the full extent of ‘living’ doesn’t just refer to eternal life, it is also the abundant life that God bestows upon us when we live a God-centered life here on Earth. June Teh, sales manager Potential to Fulfillment has helped me to identify the new season in my life, to perceive it, acknowledge it and step into it! Esther Tang, student This book reminded me that every season of my life is an opportunity for me to experience the abundant living that God has promised every one of us. Delia Ng, AlphaTracker, Batch 38 Now I understand that to achieve breakthroughs, and step from our true potential to fulfillment, we will need a new level of faith that stands on who God is in our lives. I will commit to knowing God and claiming His promises for me more and more each day so that my faith will be built on the Almighty and nothing else! You’ve laughed, giggled and even cried with the Trinitarian. Now, meet the team behind each issue! On top of juggling full-time jobs, being Sectional Leaders and Leaders, their children and families, they still chose, on their own accord, to serve in the Trinitarian editorial team. Miranda Zhang finds out what drives them. Nominate your Trinitarian Hero! Email connect@trinity.org.sg to tell us why you think they best espouse the vision and values of Trinity.
Why do you serve in the Trinitarian editorial team? Carol Lim: I believe that the pen is mightier than the sword. Words can encourage, bless, spur and sharpen readers. A good article can potentially change hearts and minds for God’s glory. I believe that God put me in this “ministry of the pen” for this purpose – to edify, encourage and comfort the believers. Being able to serve in this ministry is a dream come true. When readers tell me what I wrote encouraged and blessed them, it brings a smile to my heart. Ivan Koh: Seeing my article in print gives me great joy. I think the magazine has been a launch pad to stir me into action. For an example, I wrote a fair bit about missions, having heard the stories and the call of God for people, but had never personally went on one. So this year, I answered God’s call and went for it. It was a truly different experience. Han Meizhen: I ran into Pastor Janice at a department store one day and we talked about me joining the Trinitarian editorial team. At the first editorial meeting, I met some team members whom I’ve known since we were kids. It’s great to see them growing into their own spheres and also wonderful to serve together with them to bring real and touching stories to print. Gabriel Chu: I love writing, so I was looking for ways to serve God with this passion. I found out about the Trinitarian Magazine and signed up to serve. I am also glad to work with the magazine leadership team that is patient and encouraging, especially when I first started!
From us at the Trinitarian magazine, we hope that you continue to hear God’s voice, feel God’s heartbeat, and see God’s marvelous works in this church, this land and the nations beyond. Interested to write for the Trinitarian? Write in to connect@trinity.org.sg
Pastor Janice: The amazing thing about the Trinitarian is God’s handprint in it. Whenever we needed writers or help with articles, God would just send them. In fact, many of the writers on this team approached us on their own wanting to serve God in this ministry. But beyond that, they, too, had caught God’s heart for this magazine – that is to convey God’s timely message to our readers. Each issue is put together with a lot of prayer and hard work from this team. They are a fun, dedicated bunch that I am very proud of. Thank you for offering your time and talents to the Trinitarian! 81
