Years 7 and 8 The focus of the Year 7 and 8 curriculum is to develop enthusiastic learners who embrace the Trinity culture and community. The curriculum for Years 7 and 8 at Trinity is designed as a two-year sequence. During these first and very important years of secondary education, students are introduced to the full range of learning opportunities on offer at the School, whilst also developing the personal, social and organisational skills which will hold them in good stead for the remainder of their education. Core subjects such as English, Mathematics, Science and LOTE run almost every day, giving students maximum opportunity to benefit from regular face-to-face teaching in these key areas. Humanities and Arts subjects also run on most days; however, students change between subjects on a more regular basis. Overall, the program sees students studying only eight subjects per term, giving them unrivalled opportunities to develop positive relationships with all of their teachers. One of Trinity’s great strengths has always been the supportive learning relationships which develop between students and teachers. Our dedicated staff pride themselves on knowing each boy as an individual, and understanding his skills, passions, strengths and weaknesses. Seeing students more often makes it possible for these strong relationships to form and grow.

Year 9 In Year 9 students begin to target their learning through the elective program. The Year 9 curriculum focuses on the increasing globalisation and interconnectedness of the world into which students will move post-school. This takes place through the lens of a study of Chinese culture, which sees all boys participate in a three-week immersion experience in China. The core curriculum is expanded through the introduction of a suite of semester-length subjects, the aim of which is to help each boy develop a clearer sense of his interests, passions and enthusiasms. The subject choices made in Year 9 do not commit students to a particular program in the final three years of schooling, and as such, this year should be seen as a further opportunity for boys to explore disciplines and subject areas. The core English program in Year 9 follows the Cambridge IGCSE curriculum. Where appropriate, relevant language subjects will also be aligned with this course.

Cambridge IGCSE Cambridge IGCSE is the world’s most popular international qualification for 14 to 16 year olds. It is recognised by leading universities and employers worldwide, and is an international passport to progression and success. Trinity Grammar School, Kew is an approved Cambridge International Examination Centre and has been offering students the opportunity to study select IGCSE subjects since January 2017. We were the first school in Victoria to offer Cambridge English First Language and Cambridge English Literature, joining a network of more than 10,000 schools in over 160 countries. The Cambridge International program allows students access to a rigorous, externally examined, and internationally recognised curriculum. In offering the program, we aim to equip our students for the challenges they face in completing their secondary education, and in graduating to further study or employment in a rapidly changing global environment.

China Experience ‘Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness…broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all of one’s lifetime.’ - Mark Twain China’s increasing influence on the global stage cannot be denied. Launched in 2016, our China Experience program is designed to develop Asia-literate young men, who have a deep and insightful understanding of what it means to be a global citizen. Offering students an excellent opportunity to experience firsthand how others outside of their immediate community live and interact, the program challenges them to consider what makes them the same and how they are different. Along the way they must overcome significant language and cultural barriers. The lessons learnt through the China Experience are unyielding, inescapable, and all the more powerful because students learn to develop resilience and the resolve to cope, to find solutions, and to respect others. Students visit major cultural sites as well as some lesser-known destinations. The boys interact with locals from whom they learn about culturally-relevant topics, as well as hearing from expatriates who live and work in Beijing. The program culminates in a group research task formulated over the course of the whole year. Upon their return to Australia, students present their findings to parents and staff, giving every boy an opportunity to reflect on their journey, as well as to develop and refine presentation and public speaking skills.

CARE AND SUPPORT
Year 10 Year 10 sees students begin to define their pathways into their two-year VCE Studies program. The life of a Year 10 student at Trinity is busy, engaging, focussed and fun. It is during this year that boys are encouraged to choose the subjects that they will attempt in the first year of their VCE program. This is the time when they must start to think about possible university courses and career pathways. To assist them in this process, all students undertake a work experience placement. In addition, a guided testing program is used to help them uncover their aptitudes, interests, passions and areas for development, all of which assists them in making informed choices. The academic rigour of the Year 10 program increases significantly throughout the year, in order to prepare each student for the challenges and opportunities presented by their final two years of secondary school. In addition to the core academic program, students are given access to a significant number of elective options, each of which is designed to broaden their skills and challenge their perceptions of the world. Trinity students learn to question the assumptions that underpin global interactions and the extent to which they themselves can be a positive influence locally, nationally and globally. By the end of the Year 10 program, Trinity students are academically and socially prepared for the years ahead.

Coordinate Program The Coordinate Program began in 1993 when LOTE classes were shared between Trinity and Ruyton Girls’ School. From there, it has grown into more than 60 combined classes offered today. The Coordinate Program enables our students to branch out from their own school environment and begin engaging with other members of the community in a meaningful way. It nurtures the type of mutual respect between the genders that is so vital for healthy human relationships in the world beyond school. From Year 9 onwards, through opportunities such as the Ruyton-Trinity play and dancing classes, boys begin to interact socially with their Ruyton counterparts. In Years 11 and 12, the Program expands to encompass academic classes. This not only enables students to choose from a much broader range of subjects than might otherwise be possible, but also provides them with an introduction to a coeducational environment at an age and stage at which they can gain maximum benefit. Trinity boys interact with Ruyton girls across a range of cocurricular pursuits including theatrical productions, sporting events, and joint fundraising projects, often forming friendships that last well beyond school. The overall outcome of the Coordinate Program is for students of both Trinity and Ruyton to gain access to the broadest possible academic program, in an environment that helps them to build the maturity and social skills they will need as they progress beyond secondary school. It has proven enduringly popular among students, parents and staff, and is now firmly cemented within the culture of both schools.
