University of North Carolina Greensboro, USA For more information visit their website http://www.uncg.edu/art/about/index.html The mission of the Art Department is founded on three passionately held principles:

• First, that the exploration of ideas through the visual arts is both necessary and culturally valuable;

• Second, that an understanding of visual communications

within contemporary society is critical for an informed world view, and; • Third, that an appreciation and knowledge of art history, past and present, is essential to both young scholars and developing artists. In the Art department, committed faculty, who actively exhibit and publish nationally and internationally model the high standards we hold our students to in the visual arts, art history and art education. Our students individually challenge, explore and push the boundaries of their given field, whether it be establishing an independent vision or perspective in the studio, exploring new facets of art history or developing their own voices as art educators. Through this diversity, our program offers students a strong, self-motivated course of study where majors have meaningful contact with faculty across disciplines, methodologies and practices.

Canada Thompson Rivers University, Canada For more information visit their website http://www.tru.ca/arts/va.html Gallery studies Students interested in Gallery Studies are able to take courses in and, if they choose, specialize in this area. Courses such as Gallery Management and Public Art provide the student with an understanding of gallery infrastructures and programming at the local, regional, national, and international levels, as well as the economic structure and impact of Arts communities. Other courses in curating and exhibition installation deal more specifically with the planning and implementing of exhibitions. The TRU Visual Arts Gallery and the Kamloops Art Gallery are potential teaching spaces. Directed Studies in Gallery Studies at the fourth year level allow students to pursue this area in greater depth. Studio and art history offerings The Visual Arts Program is equipped with extensive studios for courses in Ceramics, Drawing, Foundation, Painting, Photography, Printmaking (etching and silkscreen), and Sculpture, as well as Directed Studies. While instruction is offered in each studio area, we encourage students to work across these disciplines as well, particularly in the fourth year Graduating Studies offerings. Courses in these areas, as well as courses in historical, modern and contemporary Art History and Theory make up the core of the BFA. TRU’s Visual Arts facilities also include an Art Gallery for student, faculty and other exhibitions. Students are encouraged to take part in Gallery activities through the submission of work for scheduled exhibitions, and are invited to consider proposing exhibitions for the Gallery as well. The Gallery is also used as a venue for presenting the work of artists from across Canada who come to TRU as part of our Visiting Artist program.

Multidisciplinarity, sustainability, new models of interrelation and new forms of consumption are essential to advancing in an economy that greatly needs innovation and democratization of habits, with more mature formulas and products that do not seek to symbolize differences, but rather the logic of deeper identity.

Quotes from students who have studied abroad through UWTSD

Studying abroad was the best decision I’ve ever made, I got to travel and not delay my studies, be immersed in a different culture and make friends from all around the globe. This place changed my life, I never left the honeymoon stage!

A great cultural experience, of learning another nation point of view on life and understanding the world, by food, views, and everyday life. David Brown (Universita di Bologna, Italy)

Amy Parker (UNCG)

Studying abroad in California truly changed my life. I met such an amazing wide range of people, from many backgrounds. It gave me an appreciation for the diversity of cultures and beliefs and made me a more well-rounded person. Since leaving University I’ve utilised the skills I learned there and pride myself now on my ability to work with groups of people from all walks of life, I feel that I can relate to them in a way I may never have been able to without my experience abroad. It has physically and mentally broadened my horizons, has made me who I am today and for that I am eternally grateful.

Study Abroad Regulations

How to Apply to Study Abroad

All Study Abroad schemes available at The University of Wales Trinity Saint David are governed by the following regulations:

Step 1 – Applying through UWTSD

Heads of School (or School Representative) must support and approve the application of each student who applies for a place on one of the University’s Study Abroad schemes. A formal interview will be arranged, which will normally involve the Head of School (or School Representative) and International Office. Students must maintain at least 55% overall to be considered for Study abroad.

• You should discuss with the head of your academic

school that you have an interest in studying abroad for a semester; together you can explain host institution options and decide what will be best for you and your course.

• Once you have made that decision, you should then complete the application form and return it to the International Office

Successful students will be asked to agree, with Heads of School (or School Representative) and the EX International Officer, a Programme of Study at their Study Abroad institution which is an acceptable alternative to the prescribed Programme of Study at The University of Wales Trinity Saint David.

The application form must include the following;

Relevant Study Abroad modules will be validated by Faculty Board and Quality Assurance Committee. Schools will have the opportunity to include additional assessment components and learning outcomes.

• •

On completion of the Study Abroad, a transcript of the student’s results will be received by the student and the Head of School (or School Representative). Students will be informed that the mark ranges used by institutions abroad are not always consistent with those that are used within the UK. In order to ensure that they are not unfairly advantaged or disadvantaged, in terms of their marks acquired during their Study Abroad, all assessment will be re-assessed at Trinity Saint David and marked in accordance with the University’s systems. Before being allowed to enter an exchange arrangement, students will be required to sign a declaration stating that they accept that the marks awarded by the University will be the ones recorded on their transcript and used to calculate their degree classification. External Examiners shall be kept informed of Study Abroad arrangements on an annual basis and may be called upon in cases of appeal. On return to the UK the student will supply the Head of School (or School Representative) with all relevant assessment materials and the process described in (vi) will be followed. Final marks will then be sent to the Registry for inclusion in the next relevant Progression/Award Board.

• Two reference from University tutors, one of which must •

If you application is not successful this will be returned, if your application is successful but you withdraw, the £60 fee will not be refundable. Please deposit the cheque to the finance office and include a receipt with your application form.

(UNCG, TRU, Rio Grande etc) You will then need to complete all the forms in the admission package provided by the International Office. These forms are used to create a DS2019 (if studying in the USA). This form is used when applying for your visa.

Example Application letter 1 I would like to apply to the study abroad program. I am very pleased and excited to have this opportunity to participate in the Study Abroad program as I feel it would benefit me both educationally and personally. I am currently a first year student studying BA Fine Art in Swansea School of Art. I would like to teach Art later in life. Education is a priority of mine although I also know the importance of having a life outside of the classroom. I have always enjoyed participating in extra-curricular activities both inside and outside of school and university life. My main hobby is hockey, although I have played several other sport and joined several societies. Those close to me would describe me as approachable and outgoing. I enjoy trying new things and meeting new people, which I know I would not fall short of if I were to study abroad. I know that representing the university positively whilst studying at another institution is extremely important and I can assure you that I will be a model student. If chosen to study abroad, I would focus on my education but also take advantage of being abroad at the same time. I have travelled to many parts of America, various places in Europe and to Canada, but now that I am a university student, my education is a top priority. I have travelled to many parts of the world and I like the different surrounding’s and I adapt to them well. Until I found out about the study abroad opportunity, I thought it would be impossible to find the time or the money to travel until after I have graduated. I am very excited about this opportunity because now I can travel and not delay my education as well gain this once in a lifetime experience. Studying in a different country will be spectacular to add to my transcript and job applications later in life, this would give me an edge on others that may not have that kind of experience. It will be also beneficial to learn from a different education system than what we have here in Wales and the UK. My main institution of interest, Thompson Rivers University, offers a wider range of modules that I wouldn’t be able to study here at UWTSD. As I have future goals to teach abroad, studying abroad will give me the international experience that I need. Personally, attending university in a different country will be a positively life-changing experience and an amazing opportunity. I am looking forward to being immersed in a different culture and learning how to live in other parts of the world. Although I know this will be challenging, I think it will be fun and exciting as well, giving me skills that will stick with me throughout my life as both an educator and a person in general. I know I would grow as a person and learn to be more independent whilst living and studying out of my comfort zone of home. This international experience would also give me the chance to meet new people, which could benefit me personally, but also give me contacts for future opportunities to work and travel outside of Wales.

Thank you for taking my application into consideration and I look forward to hearing from you.
