Welcome to SWWCTE The South West Wales Centre of Teacher Education (SWWCTE) is a new, forward-looking and ambitious School within the Faculty of Education and Communities. SWWCTE will build on the long and highly respected tradition of providing high quality teacher education and training at Carmarthen and Swansea, spanning three centuries. This Centre, which was established as one of three regional centers across Wales, following the Furlong Review of teacher education in 2006, was formally launched in July 2011 and has, as its primary aim, the training
of high quality Newly-Qualified Teachers (NQTs) for primary and secondary schools in Wales and beyond. SWWCTE brings together the very best practice at both founding institutions. It focuses on the professional study of the full range of primary education and provides a thorough understanding of the statutory curricula for primary schools,

The Initial Teacher Education programmes at UWTSD bring together the reputable strengths of staff at Swansea and Carmarthen and the very best practices at both founding institutions. The programmes are built on the early successes of the South West Wales Centre of Teacher Education (SWWCTE), established as one of three regional centres across Wales
in July 2011. The Centre has, as its primary aim, the development of high quality Newly-Qualified Teachers (NQTs) for primary and secondary schools in Wales and beyond. The Centre is built on strong foundations and is agile, fleet of foot, politically astute and futureoriented. By making the most

Campus Life The Carmarthen campus is located on the outskirts of Carmarthen, the reputed birthplace of Merlin of Arthurian legend and the oldest town in Wales. It is a busy town which enjoys a good mix of traditional and modern shops, attesting to its unique charm and its readiness to adapt to the needs of the modern shopper. The town is served by major road and rail networks and is within easy reach of major cities including Swansea and Cardiff, as well as ferry ports in west Wales. Sweeping lawns and landscaped areas form a picturesque setting for the mix of Victorian and modern buildings. The campus boasts a range of facilities including a well-stocked library and excellent learning and teaching spaces as well as IT facilities 10 | www.uwtsd.ac.uk
which include open access areas and rooms for students to undertake group work. Sports facilities include the Sports Centre with a Health and Fitness Suite, swimming pool and a multi-purpose dance studio. Student Services and Students’ Union are both located in their own buildings on the campus enabling students to access their facilities and services easily. The Centre’s most recent Estyn reports noted excellence in teaching and the expectation of high standards across our field of work: The Centre provides a ‘wide variety of challenging and stimulating learning experiences’ and there is ‘high quality of training on the undergraduate programme’. The Centre’s strategies and procedures include ‘a clearly
communicated vision of high expectations … and an aspiration to deliver high quality teachers to the teaching force in Wales and beyond. Tutors, mentors and trainees understand the vision well and subscribe to the aspiration’ The primary staff team are all qualified teachers, are experienced, dedicated and hardworking; they are regularly nominated for – and win – awards from the student body in recognition of their supportive approach to students. Many of the staff have held senior positions in schools prior to joining the university and bring their expertise to their teaching. All the staff have some involvement in education research or research-related activity.

BA Primary Education with QTS UCAS Code: X120 (English Medium) The course offers a balance of University-based and Professional Teaching Experiences that give student teachers a broad insight into the profession in preparation for a career in primary education. Individuals’ knowledge and understanding of curricula and ethical and professional matters are developed, in addition to enhancing students’ knowledge of pedagogy and effective teaching and learning strategies. Individuals’ own personal skills of literacy, numeracy, digital competency and communication are enhanced in a variety of ways, including workshops, lectures, tutorials, visits, guest speakers, discussions, problem solving activities and forums. Professional Teaching Experiences take place primarily in pre-schools and school settings and are designed to enable students to apply the knowledge, skills and understanding acquired within the University-based Studies to teaching in the school context. Students are introduced to teaching and learning matters early in the course, before revisiting them at a deeper level of understanding as the course progresses, leading ultimately to the achievement of Qualified Teacher Status by the end of the third year. Students also have the opportunity to discover the educational opportunities of museums, galleries and other contexts. There are 24 weeks of Professional Teaching Experiences in the three-year degree programme where students are placed in schools across south, west and/ or mid Wales. A range of teaching experiences will be provided that enable students to demonstrate

O fewn y rhaglen mae pwyslais cryf ar allu digidol a dysgu a gyfoethogir gan dechnoleg a’r modd y dylid defnyddio’r rhain i gefnogi dysgu ar draws y cwricwlwm cynradd. Ym mhob blwyddyn, ceir cyfleoedd sy’n cyfoethogi’r dysgu. Mewn blynyddoedd a fu, mae’r rhain wedi cynnwys ymweliadau estynedig â Llundain, UDA, Lesotho yn ogystal ag ymweliadau dydd ag orielau ac amgueddfeydd yng Nghymru. Yn ogystal â hyn, mae pob myfyriwr yn elwa o ddarlithoedd gan wŷr gwadd a gweithdai gan staff ysgol yn ystod y ddarpariaeth yn y Brifysgol.
