Foreword As the Dean of Art and Design at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) I have inherited a rich legacy of excellence in Art & Design education built up over many years. I am delighted to present this small ‘snap-shot’ of the amazingly diverse body of work produced by this year’s graduates. Being the oldest art college in Wales means that the Faculty of Art and Design at UWTSD has seen many changes over the past 160 years. The merger of Swansea Metropolitan University with the University of Wales Trinity Saint David has established a new University with an amazing pedigree dating back back to 1822. This year the Faculty opened the ALEX Design Exchange. The Grade II listed former Central Library in Swansea becomes the latest addition to Swansea’s expanding Arts Quarter following its £12 million redevelopment. The new building houses our Industrial Design and Glass courses alongside 3D Computer Animation and Games Design. This summer’s exhibition season is more than just a collection of exhibitions it is a celebration of a journey or rather hundreds of journeys. This ‘Graduate Exhibitions Guide’ allows us to peer through the Faculty’s creative windows

2

Rhagair to witness an affirmation of the exuberance expressed by graduates from a wide range of disciplines who have combined the highest standards of knowledge and skill to create works of outstanding artistry and design. The work of each graduate is very different yet they are interwoven to create a rich commonwealth of creativity. Each project on display represents the culmination of countless hours of hard work by the graduates themselves and the dedicated tutors who have supported and guided them over three years. I hope you enjoy this showcase of some of the best Art & Design talent in the UK. If this has sparked your interest then why not contact us today to discuss your future at one of the UK’s top colleges of art.

Tom Gibbs, Graduate

Our Digital Film and Television Production programmes at UWTSD Swansea are structured in an innovative and flexible way that provides our students with the opportunity to explore this contemporary media within many aspects of filmmaking. Our aim is to produce graduates that take initiative. Whether they choose a commercial or independent route, students are encouraged to develop their own personal creative direction.

Our new ‘state of the art’ facilities allow sustained engagement, enabling our students to gain the confidence to express ideas through digital film. Students are continuously encouraged to explore and learn the entire processes from production, editing and camera work, to sound recording.

Fine Art

(Swansea)

‘The Fine Art course provides students with the opportunity to grow creatively within a comfortable and non-judgmental environment. During my three years on the course I have been encouraged to push boundaries in order to find the best possible way to express my thoughts and ideas. We have a wide variety of workshops available where we have the opportunity to explore different media’

The Fine Art team is pleased to introduce the 2015 degree show, which is the culmination of much hard work, planning and anticipation, by the graduating students. This is their chance to showcase their work at a pivotal moment between university and the professional world. Throughout the student’s time at UWTSD Swansea, their studios have been lively places with animated discussions about the creative process and the relationship between idea and image. No medium or method is excluded – we encourage students to consider which material, object or site is most pertinent for their thoughts from sculptural fabrication to painting and drawing, to video, performance, and installation.

Graphic Design

Graphic Design effectively and creatively integrates and manipulates words and imagery to inform, persuade and provoke responses in a huge variety of areas within the wider visual arena (e.g. books, posters, magazines, packaging, websites). The programme is concerned with the use of graphic design in publicity, advertising, information design and visual communications in general. Designing for both print and web are central to our studies. This exhibition demonstrates the wide variety of approaches that are available to the graphic designer in a challenging and innovative way.

“I have no doubt in my mind, that UWTSDSwansea helped me achieve my full potential as a Graphic Designer. The theory taught broadened my understanding of design. The work pushed my creativity in new, interesting ways. While the lecturers were both encouraging and insightful, going above and beyond to help when needed. If you’re considering a career in Graphic Design, I can recommend no where better.”

Illustration

BA(Hons) Illustration at Swansea is a lively and creative programme with twin aims. The first is the teaching of illustration as a commercial, skilled discipline and the second aim is embracing illustration as a universal, visual language inherent in the creative arts industry. The programme expands the potential of what illustration can be: from picture books and graphic novels to story-boarding and the film industry; from editorial and advertising to licensing and visual merchandising.

The 2015 illustration exhibition showcases the diverse nature of the programme and its students. The work highlights the notion of what illustration is, and what it can be - in all of its guises - but most importantly, as an integral part of our visual culture. “My time during the illustration course has been really insightful and eye-opening to the possibilities illustration has in its application. There's a strong push for development and experimentation to elevate your work in new ways whilst still appreciating the way you want to work.”

“The university, the course and its staff have surprised me; they have not surprised me simply by overachieving my expectations, I am surprised because they have allowed me to surprise myself.”

Industrial Design

Industrial Design is a creative activity whose aim is to produce the products, services or systems that we interact with every moment of our lives. Industrial designers are the individuals who make sense of our problems; they identify new ways of doing things, creating new possibilities in the form of tangible objects that enable us to live our lives the way we would like. From kettles to cars, from bottles to boats, the Industrial Designer’s role is to make the manufactured world around us fit – fit our bodies, fit our needs and fit our aspirations for the future!

“The Product Design course has provided me with a wealth of experience which has helped me develop a wide range of skills which I have applied within my practice as well as in life in general. The tutors here are excellent and have an open door policy, which means that they are always around for help or just a chat. This course has challenged and excited me from the 1st year right through to the 3rd year. Everyone involved within the course including tutors, technicians and peers are really friendly and are always willing to lend a hand and support you. The studio becomes a second home and the people, like family.”

The exhibition contains the final major project work of students studying Automotive Design and Product Design. The work, as always, is diverse encompassing a range of product and vehicle designs – some are conceptual proposals and some are practical solutions but all are the culmination of creativity, pragmatism and sheer determination. The students have worked hard to get to this point, and this is just the beginning for them… We can’t wait to see what they do next!

The School of Industrial Design would like to welcome you to our 2015 Exhibition.

Photography

The Exhibitions

Photography in the Arts is concerned with exploration, self-discovery and innovation through the medium of photography. Photojournalism enables students to undertake an intensive study of the relationship of image and text, the theory and practice of social documentation and practical reportage using the medium of photography.

The culmination of three year’s work, students from BA Photography in the Arts and BA Photojournalism will be exhibiting their work in Swansea and London. The varying backgrounds and interests of the students combined with the openness and encouragement to experiment offered by the degree courses, has resulted in diverse and innovative photographic work encompassing documentary, landscape, portrait, fashion, conceptual, constructed and performative approaches.

The first offer I got after graduating was to be a part of an exhibition at Ffotogallery in Cardiff, showcasing emerging artists in Wales. During my studies at UWTSD Swansea, I met a lot of good friends and as a group of students we helped each other out through critical discussions about our work. I have recently completed a Masters in Photography at the University of Gothenburg, but I still have contact with many of my Swansea friends professionally, as we have collaborative projects running and have exhibited together since university.

This richly layered show embodies the experimental practice and interdisciplinary engagement that is woven into the culture of our Contemporary Dialogues programme. Students across the pathways have shared lectures, workshops, dialogues and seminars and out of this have produced work that focuses on materiality, process, non-materiality and performance.

A multitude of themes including the relic, relationality, the archive, the gift, gender, the sublime, memory and the journey are represented, all arrived at through engagement with materials, media and discourse within and across boundaries. A reminder to us all of the potential of proper dialogue: new knowledge, new thinking and new ways of being an artist, designer or maker.
