Programme Design

Programme Structure

On the Foundation Diploma course you are encouraged to experiment and will learn a wide range of methods and techniques including printmaking, painting, casting, photographic printing, video, paper manipulation, typography, 3D construction, collage, sewing, digital photography, and much more.

The Foundation Course provides the fundamental basis to study Art and Design practice, which makes it a preferred progression route to Higher Education Art and Design specialised study.

Stage One This is diagnostic in nature and enables students to identify their potential and their own preference for specialist areas of study. Students experiment with a variety of materials and methods and are introduced to the five main areas of study:

The busy studios provide a friendly, enthusiastic atmosphere where you can develop your work and gain confidence. The Foundation Diploma course will offer you the time and space to discover where your strengths lie, to challenge and extend your skills and abilities, and to successfully identify your future direction, and career. The staff team will give you support, guidance and expert tuition throughout the year, and will help your decisionmaking at every stage. In recent years UWTSD’s Swansea Foundation Course has become one of the most successful in the UK with an outstanding record of placements and pass rates. The course provides a full-time programme over one year. For those who work or have other commitments then studying on a part- time basis over two years, attending up to 10 hours per week, is an option.

Stage Two Students produce a personal portfolio of work and carry out research into their chosen specialist area.

Stage Three Students complete a major project that they present for assessment and certification in the form of a public exhibition held at the end of the course. All three stages of the programme are supported by field trips to galleries and sites of interest both locally and in major cultural centres, such as London and Amsterdam or Paris.

Entry Requirements

Student support:

One subject at GCE ‘A’ Level or equivalent plus five passes at GCSE, including English Language (or Welsh) at C plus or: Other qualifications deemed equivalent by the Academic Board.

Our accommodation service offers a wide range of rooms – from private lodgings to halls of residence – at affordable prices. The cost in Swansea is approx £53 - £72 a week.

Mature Students Our offers are not solely based on academic results. We take your skills, achievements and life experience into consideration.

UWTSD also offers counselling and a study support programme designed to meet your learning needs, offering flexible options from one-off sessions to a planned programme of study.

There are no fees for Foundation Art & Design Student life in Swansea Swansea is an ideal location in which to live and study. You will be based in a modern city by the sea, big enough to allow you your own space but small enough to feel that you belong. Excellent road and rail links ensure that you are never too far away from family friends – and London is under three hours away by train.

All applicants with suitable qualifications are interviewed. Interviews are informal and friendly, and applicants are requested to bring along a substantial portfolio of recent work for consideration and discussion.
