WELCOME

to the 4th Edition of Surface Pattern Design’s self-published Patternzine! This is our pattern charged round-up of what has been happening in Swansea this last year - there’s been a lot going on! This zine shares some of the reasons why we think our programme rocks and celebrates some of the most fantastic student experiences of the year! We’ve always known that our students get a first class student experience, and this has been recognised by the Guardian university league tables where we ranked 8th in the UK for Fashion & Textiles and 1st in Wales. HOORAY FOR US!

New Designers and H&M The Story of Us and Them Goes Full Circle

A selection of this year’s graduates exhibiting at New Designers 2018, will bring a story that started at ND 2015 full circle. It’s a full 3 years since the H&M talent recruitment team approached the Surface Pattern Design graduates of 2015 at New Designers. H&M were so impressed by the students they met that they approached us to run a live brief in Autumn 2016 resulting in a group of our 2nd year students going to Sweden for 3 months during the summer of 2017 to work at their design HQ. One of our alumnus, and ND One Year On alumnus, Rosie Cook, is now working full time as print designer at H&M. The students graduate this year and will be coming to ND themselves. Who knows who they will attract to their stands (T48 and JC66) and what amazing cycles of opportunity and employment they will generate. What comes around goes around at New Designers – we love that. We look forward to welcoming the H&M team back too.

Here’s our ND H&M timeline Summer 2015… H&M visit New Designers, London, and meet graduating Surface Pattern Design students. H&M invite Surface Pattern students to apply for their internship scheme. Daisy Jenkins, 2nd into 3rd year Surface Pattern student embarks on a three month paid placement with the brand in Stockholm. Autumn 2015… H&M visit the programme in Swansea, they speak to students about future placement opportunities and interview graduates for Print Design roles. H&M offer a significant live brief for the programme in Autumn 2016 Autumn/Winter 2016/17… H&M visit in October to brief their live project. Four separate AW 2017 trends are briefed to address one of the key H&M customers using the H&M Fashion Triangle working method. Students embark on design process through drawing, shop reporting, competitor research, customer profiling, mood boarding, colour analysis, pattern development and fashion drawing. A WebEx link up to Stockholm HQ is held for a mid-project critique in November. January 2017… Exhibition of student work is held in response to the H&M live brief tailored to the BA(Hons) and MDes(Hons) Surface Pattern Design programme here in Swansea College of Art. H&M return to judge the live brief and select their winners and runners up at the show. Alumni attend to interview for permanent Print Designer roles in H&M 3 lucky winners, and 3 lucky runners up are selected to go to Stockholm for 3 month long paid placements in summer 2017!

Summer 2017… Students enjoy an incredible internship at H&M headquarters, Sweden. Each student goes to a separate section of the brand; mentored and trained by the H&M inhouse structure. Rosie Cooke, Surface Pattern, ND and One Year On alumnus, is called to Stockholm for a second interview and is taken on as print designer for lingerie & nightwear - she moves to Stockholm in August – AMAZING! Students return for their final year of study boosted by such an intense and beneficial learning experience. June 2018... Three of our H&M interns are #comingtoND – they are highly employable; talented and experienced designers. We look forward to welcoming the H&M team back to the stand

We love a story with a HAPPY ending. Incredible student experience = HAPPY Surface Pattern students Employable graduates = HAPPY visitors to ND Employment within H&M HQ = HAPPY graduates + Happy H&M patternzine

the Eley Kishimtoto project

Mark Eley is one half of the duo ELEY KISHIMOTO. He was appointed as a UWTSD Swansea College of Art Professor of Practice in 2017 and is working closely with Surface Pattern Design students during his professorship. Established in 1992, London-based print studio ELEY KISHIMOTO have gained global notoriety through a plethora of outputs ranging from fashion and interiors to many far reaching and diverse design collaborations. The brand has become associated with their freedom to decorate anything and everything and Mark Eley is currently bringing this spirit to Surface Pattern, daring to ask our students to BE PREPARED TO PATTERN THE FUTURE.

He tasked the students with designing a new cover for an iPhone 10 in response to 3 live themes from their Japanese partners. He attended the opening of the exhibition and awarded prizes for his pick of the best designs. Amazing what you can do in a week!

OBJECT 2018 Rotterdam The Material Lab

We have a saying in Wales that good things always come in threes. So when International Artist and Researcher Jan Koen Lomans asked if we’d like to show student work at OBJECT 2018, Rotterdam, we thought we’d send three of our best MDes Surface Pattern Design students to give an insight into how we think, how we innovate and what our students and graduates can do.

‘The Material Lab’ @ OBJECT was a concept and materiality driven exhibition of work exploring technical innovations within laser cutting and engraving, 3D casting and digital and silk screen print.

“Through OBJECT I learned key skills about how to display and put up my work while interacting with people from

across

creative

industries.

Gaining contacts with other artists and companies has helped me with research for my current work. I plan to use this information when looking for employment after I graduate and hope to be able to use the experience to inform my future exhibitions.”

Our lecturing and technical staff show their work internationally. Anna Lewis and Tim Stokes, have been selected for an international exhibition held during La Biennale Architettura in Venice, starting May to November 2018. Both works (pictured) seek to address issues of relationships, connection or disconnection. Their art considers the body within spaces, the manipulation of the body, storytelling and ideas of identity.
